Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

in regards to eight gates, I agree eight gates should be unlocked by skill tier, BUT that the downside is negated/diminished by skill rank in chakra control and constitution, basically as long as your attribute and control together are higher than the gate level you are using then you are fine, use higher and the difference determines the damage. which is my head canon on why Gai did not instantly die/turn to dust after using eight gates for any period of time

Thinking on it...

A large part of beauty is health. Training from Gai (prep for the Gates) has lead Daisuke to step into supernatural Appearance. The Eight Gates are about unlocking/unblocking meridians for energy to flow through.

Extrapolating from there, it might be said that the Gates are in fact the local equivalent of Cultivation or something.

So if I'm interpreting your claims correctly, the best way to get a mastery of the Eight Gates is Pinnacle Appearance.

A little omake, really not much, but eh.

Disclaimer: Daisuke and Ino are 12, maybe half a year before the current update

"Do we really still want to spar after class? "

He turned to glance at her.
Sitting next to him, shielding her eyes from the glaring sun, Ino continued to watch the current face-off between Sakura and Hinata.

While his match against Shino wasn't exactly a cake-walk, it wasn't particular taxing either.
Unlike Ino's previous match against Jabari.
It started normal enough, like two weeks ago Ino went for a kick to the kneepit to force him into a position where she could deliver a fight-ending kick to the liver.
Vicious, but fully understandable given her opponent. Jabarai, thankfully didn't hold any grudges and even gave her a thumbs-up.

This time, however, he saw it coming and blocked the first kick with a simple twist of his leg.
Catching Ino slightly by surprise he immediately forced her on the defensive and unwilling to block his hammer-like strikes she had to dodge and weave for what felt like eternity.
With the sun burning down, it was a matter of time until she was pushed out of the ring.

She was trying to sound nonchalant, but he saw, that her breathing was still slightly uneven.

He always indulged her, be it shopping, trying some new restaurants and sometimes even helping in the flower shop when her dad had a case over at the Intelligence Division.
It was actually pretty simple, he was happy when she was happy.

And… he was fully aware, that this wasn't a one way street.
Not everybody picks up an entirely foreign subject like Ken-jutsu just for a friend.
And being on the receiving end when he wanted to test a tai-jutsu technique surely wasn't pleasant either. He was sure if he insisted, she would join him later for a Ken-jutsu session without much fuss.

Turning back to probably the politest match of the day he gave a shrug.

"Nah, too hot for that. Do you have any plans?"

"Maybe" she scooted over, meaning that this was not supposed to be a group activity.

"You told me Gai-sensei taught you how to swim, right?"

"Yeah, as a kid, as a way to train without stressing my joints."

Seeing Sensei Iruka deliver some parting words and dismissing them for the day Daisuke saw Ino practically jump up.

"Perfect, come and get me at the flower shop and wear your swimming trunks."

With that she was off.
___

Now it was his turn to act nonchalant and fail miserably.

In his trunks at the shore of small tranquil stream he couldn't help but stare.

Standing before him, striking a pose Ino proudly displayed her apparently brand-new bikini.

"You look gorgeous." There, he said it and meant it. No point in denying in front of a Yamanaka.
Even he could tell, that his cheeks looked like he stood too close to one of Sasuke's fireballs.

Catching Ino's shit eating grin he turned and stepped into the water, 'keep calm and carry on'

"Not a word to your father!"

Quest Acquired: Survive Puberty!

'Goddammit!'
___

Hours later with the sun slowly disappearing behind the tree tops Daisuke made his way to the shore.
Rotating one shoulder and then the other. "I totally forgot what a great workout this is."

Humming in agreement Ino contentedly flipped the page of her magazine.

'Superhuman appearance indeed'

Feet still in the water, a thought struck, déjà vu.
Pulling one foot slightly up and on the surface he started to channel his chakra.
Literally testing the waters.

"Now that's interesting."

Humming in agreement Ino flipped the next page.
I greatly enjoyed that. Take 60 XP and, except for that added quest, canon.

Not to be pushy but did you see my question regarding a perk for dual nature affinity?
I did not. Going back....
@Vesvius

Hmm what would the xp cost be for a perk that gives us a double affinity when the time comes for us to learn our affinity?
Considering those are pretty much bloodlines, it would be high, and would pretty much preclude elemental jutsu that aren't your two affinity.

which would explain why rock lee looks like maito guy despite not being related, perfection only has one form yes?
Lee doesn't really look like him. His haircut, clothes and eyebrows are really the only things that look the same and only two of those things were a personal choice. Their eyes and noses are completely different.

Short but Mighty! by Polemarch (canon)
A SHORTER OMAKE but with Extra MIGHT

Daisuke leaned back in his chair. He was trying to listen but… well, no he wasn't. His eyes slowly drifted as Iruka continued his lecture on… Bird Country. Huh. Well, his eyes were drawn to the window, where he could see students filing out of the building holding headbands. Graduation. Huh. He had the strangest feeling that this graduation was different than the others that'd passed since he was a student at the academy. He sighed, it was probably just some throwaway line anyway.

His attention only drifted back to Iruka as he finished his speech, saying something about the complex politics of a buffer nation, existing only to keep the peace between what would otherwise be endlessly warring Daimyos. He had left the chair before Iruka's last word was spoken, and had started sprinting to the training grounds before Sakura had finished her final questions to Iruka.

Gai wasn't in a handstand when Daisuke found him at their usual spot. He wasn't doing no-handed push-ups (Toes are very youthful Daisuke-kun!), and he wasn't even engaged in a vigourous plank. He was merely standing by a tree, a serious expression on his face. This was breaking new ground for Daisuke. He couldn't help but glance around as he walked towards Gai, looking out for some unexpected, but youthfully demonstrated, taijutsu choke-hold from behind. But there wasn't anything. Not even a flying elbow.

"Gai, sir." Daisuke coughed a little. "Is everything alright?"

Daisuke expected many things, for him to start bawling was… actually a possibility in his mind. Tears after all, were the distilled product of intense youth… along with sweat. It depended on how Gai was feeling.

"Daisuke! You have proven most youthful over the years," Gai boomed. Daisuke sometimes actually wondered whether it was possible for Gai not to boom. "Your spirit blossoms like the chrysanthemum in autumn! Yo-"

"Gai. What's going on." Gai's face stilled with Daisuke's interruption.

"I will tell you," he proclaimed. "I was given a Genin Team to teach among the newly graduating class."

"A genin team?" Daisuke suddenly realized why this was an important graduating class. "What does that mean?"

"Fear not my youthful pupil! I will not abandon you to the fast-flowing currents of destiny, although I am sure you would prevail against that coursing river!" He shouted. "No! I will still guide you! However, I will no longer be able to meet with you as often, for I have responsibilities to my other students."

"Are we still training today at least?" Daisuke looked at Gai. He should have remembered this was coming, a part of him however had often thought that perhaps Gai would somehow take him as part of his team.

"Of course!" Gai gave a thumbs up and a blinding smile. Fast enough that Daisuke's eye could hardly keep up he slapped him. "Today we will work on blocking! Now, block!"

Gai slapped Daisuke once more.

Thanks for writing that scene so I don't have to! Take 50 XP and canon.

so what do we need to be rookie of the year?

Assuming Journeyman tier Genjutsu and Superhuman Chakra Control are enough for our purposes, we need to demonstrate "top rankings of the class" tier Ninjutsu (Journeyman tier or propped up in class performance?), Henge (Intermidiate and demonstration), Bushin (Intermediate and demonstration), one other Academy Taught Skill, and two more Non Academy Taught Skills. Honestly, the Quest is a lot closer to completion than I thought it might be.

The big issue is going to be demonstrating Non Academy Taught Skills imo. Unless we can bring it up in Sparring then it's not going to be very immediately noticeable.

Maybe boosting Chakra Sense, Perception, and grabbing a Blind Fighting Perk?

Linguistics might be another option, but @Vesvius are there multiple languages in the Elemental Nations? What does Linguistics actually do?

Daisuke can also prove his mastery regarding History & Mathematics, which would be best augmented by Superhuman Intelligence. Intelligence just needs 240 XP, whereas a Journeyman Skill requires 400 for each one.

"Gai. What's going on." Gai's face stilled with Daisuke's interruption.

Rude, shame on this Daisuke!

Speaking of Daredevil, isn't there a canon nin who is blind?

Itachi and Madara.

Or maybe getting a perk that makes us a sensor? Its a huge advantage to be able to tell where your enemies are without sight.

How? You'd think we would have found out our talent for it by now if we did. It is afterall a natural talent you are born with, so it'd be weird if we just suddenly had it.
