In that case, let's try a tactic the Goblimon haven't really seen yet.

Tactics!

When it disperses a few moments later, your thick fur is covered in a light coating of frost but thankfully that's the full extent of the effect.
Huh. Verge has a natural resistance to low level ice attacks. Good to know.
"Thanks Verge. That dastardly villain tricked me" He murmurs sounding more than a little ashamed. "He surrendered and-

It's interesting how resistances and weaknesses aren't just pokemon-style RPS but a lot of miscellaneous stuff. Flamemon being really vulnerable to ice attacks is obvious, but I didn't even consider how thick fur would be a benefit. It's neat how this quest seems to take a nice middle ground between videogamey stuff and a more realistic freeform thing, which makes sense considering the setting is quite literally a self-sustaining computer simulation.

In fact, starting from this I generally want to talk about how this is kind of a really fascinating thing to implement - taking video game-type shit and exploring the implications of it. And I don't mean boring power fantasies like The Gamer, I'm talking shit like how in this world, getting XP by killing someone is a genuine moral debate. The way the reincarnation works, essentially being a New Game Plus of sorts with one's power and nature at death helping to determine certain things as babies, is also really neat.

I also really like the unique and very justified approach to the Crutch Character. Gramps is a fucking unstoppable monster for a rookie, essentially turning what would otherwise be an extremely dangerous war into a tutorial section where we're most likely the safest we'll ever be. But even if Gramps by some miracle avoids getting Obi Wan'd, his assistance is inherently finite due to his inability to digivolve.

This makes me hope that we'll see a similar kind of exploration of the effects of a world like this on its inhabitants as in Infamy. For those who didn't read it, it never focuses on it, but it kind of builds a narrative about how the Digital World is honestly kind of a nihilistic nightmare; a universe where the laws of reality are pretty much designed from the ground up to encourage endless violence. The way that the characters would engage with this fact helped shape a lot of their dynamics. You get stronger to survive, but getting stronger just makes you have to repeat the same things again on a higher level because areas full of Rookies just don't have anything to offer a Champion, who needs more food and can't get any benefit from fighting normal rookies, from data consumption or just training, and the same is true for Ultimates, if your one of the few lucky enough to reach that far.

Essentially, power isn't just a way to attain one's goals but a precious resource that everyone is desperate to get more of to protect what's dear to them in an anarchic, violent place. And those kinds of constant struggles are the perfect way to show what kind of person a character really is. Gnaw buys into the barbarism and always kills his opponents whenever possible, to stop dangerous people from coming back to threaten what he cares about and also to get more powerful to protect what matters to him. It's unscrupulous as hell and kind of selfish and myopic, but can you really blame him? Meanwhile we have Flamemon, who is idealistic as hell and essentially wants to be Superman - the pacifistic superhero who leads by example and never kills because all life is precious. This is, again, really idealistic, and also kind of selfish in its own way too because he's taking risks for the sake of his own ideology. Furthermore, the only reason this is a feasible dream at all is because he's incredibly talented. I'd imagine normally you can either become a big player or not kill, but not both at once.

And caught up in the middle of all of this is Verge. Although some of his traits happened due to coincidence, they're perfect for a viewpoint character of this world. He's compassionate, but also prone to fits of anger, which is kind of a microcosm for how the world itself cannot be anything but violence-prone. Furthermore, his tendency to commit to things super hard means that as time goes on he's bound to eventually end up caught between incompatible commitments and goals. It'll be really interesting to see where this story goes.

So yeah, this is a little messy, but I just wanted to gather my various ramblings and speculations about the setting and story into one place.

Key word is low level, but yeah. Verges fur makes him resistant to colder weather and a few icy attacks like that Goblimons breath. Won't stop more concentrated or powerful attacks though.

That is a lesson he shall hopefully learn.

K. Will do so from now on.
Hehe.

Wow. Awesome stuff man.

You sir have earned a stat point! Edit: I'll make it two.

Also, making a new rule, and adding it to the info post. No banking points.

Put the point into Fortitude please!

Edit: The other one also into Fortitude; I wanna eventually get it up to par with Strength in both value and Talent.

Edit 2: Forgot the new rule. In that case, put it into Endurance.

So in the roughly 11 days since Verge started out here in this quest he's improved quite a bit. As a guy who likes to get an exact number for that kind of thing I decided to go check. Now I'm showing it to everyone else.

I'll probably do this again once the prologue is near its end.

Initial Stats
Strength: 27
Fortitude: 24
Endurance: 25
Agility: 14

Total: 90 Points

Current Stats

Strength: 60.25
Fortitude: 57.0
Endurance: 52.50
Agility: 36.0

Total: 205.75

That's a total difference of 115 points, meaning that Verge is 127% more powerful than at the start.

Strength: 33.25 more stat points. Raised the most, not surprised really.
Fortitude: 33 more stat points Is now the second highest stat surprisingly.
Endurance: 27.50 more stat points. I'm surprised this came in so low considers its talent is tied with strength.
Agility: 22 more stat points. This was actually trained the most and is closest to getting a + talent raise.

Skills are also something Verge has improved on as well, though it's even higher than the stats admittedly thanks to how they work.

Digging: 2/100->9/100
General Fighting: 0/100->12/100

For a total of 19 skill points gained since the start.

This just shows how far little Verggy has come and he still has a (hopefully) Long road ahead.

This is why I wanna get Fortitude to the same level of Talent as Strength and Endurance so that we can then pump it all with sparring training to get that fighting skill up higher as well.

No worries friend I personally raised that stat by four points and increased it's talent.

Or I think I did? All I know is that I raised a talent, didn't ask what though.

Doing a vote count now just to see where things stand. I'm kind of hoping to get to page 31 before the next update this evening.

Edit: Eleven votes so far.

So, who else thinks that this last battle is going to be a biggie? We've already removed almost half of the Goblimon horde as it stands, provided Gramps was right with his estimate.

And I'm really starting to worry about who Gramps is remembering when he talks about Flamon...
