It was a…. passable day in the wilderness out near Arena City. Verge, his wards, and his student were not far from the city, being close enough to see it, but they were far enough away that his two wards could bond more over digging…. Verge had complicated feelings on the subject himself.
His student meanwhile was focusing on improving his spirit sensing, a task the younger digimon seemed to favor over the more physical aspects of his training.
…Thinking of digging it had been a while since Verge had dedicated practice with his Crusher Bone attack. This could be as good of an opportunity as any…or as the metaphor users would say, he could kill five birdramon with one bone.
He had probably gotten the metaphor wrong in some way, but he also hated dealing with metaphors in general.
Fortunately it did not take long to create a set of targets using, ironically perhaps, his Crusher Bone skill to create the needed material; he had to account for Xia stealing away one of two of the metallic bones for purposes he did not quite understand, but thankfully the Champion level attack was easy enough to use that it was of no major consequence.
And so Verge began his practice. Starting with the basic variation of the attack was easy enough, by this point even that variation could delete most Ultimates with a direct hit.
But it could be taken further, his creation of spears with the skill had shown that much.
Early on he'd put more practice into different types of creations with his ability, mostly just simple objects that he's seen other digimon use…mostly so he could see how good he was at throwing them. So far, other than the spears he'd already known how to create, he was having a hard time of it, as very few things actually added to his capabilities at this point.
He'd thought the bone boomerang would hold some promise but he threw the thing so hard that it appeared that it was not going to come back.
And…Xia dragged away the test dummy he'd driven a particularly sharp bone into, forcing him to make another. At least his ward was intelligent enough to wait until he was done practicing before trying such things, even if he'd wished she understood that he did not mean he wanted her to drag the entire construct away when he gave her permission to scavenge in between rounds of practice.
He would also make sure not to include claws in the newer dummies. The way the one Xia had dragged away fell with its arms forward causing its claws to scrape against the ground and made it look almost like a digimon desperately trying to avoid being eaten alive. It was mildly distressing to Verge himself as well as being loud enough to disrupt Deimo's meditation.
Next Verge had chosen to work on some of the finer elements of the bones he could already create, namely he wanted to see if he could make them splinter along certain patterns, being on the wrong end of enough shrapnel in his life to know that it was significantly harder to dodge than a singular projectile, a factor he was lacking in his own ranged attacks as of the moment.
…Well making a bone that would splinter when put under enough duress was an easy enough task, but that led to another challenge of how to accelerate them.
But then Verge remembered that he had one very basic skill that could help him in that regard.
He punched it.
The force of the blow was enough shatter the construct and send the sharp shards that it had splintered off into towards the test dummies, riddling them with razor-sharp bits of metal, but not enough to do major damage, given that the dummies themselves were also made of metal. So it was not that much of a surprise.
Making sure that the parts of the bones that would actually become the shrapnel were much tougher than the rest would be something to keep in mind for the future though.
Did the pile of extra crusher bones he created to practice the basic version of the skill earlier get smaller while he was looking away?
….Well regardless of that mystery, he had other ideas to try out.
The next test was to see if he could cause an explosion from his crusher bones, much like he had done with one of the Vortex Island competitors back in the first Battle Royale he'd entered....That freeform tournament was a major disaster, and he really hoped that nothing like that would happen in this one as well. He would also have to warn Deimos first, sudden explosions have a tendency to disrupt meditation.
It thankfully did not take long for him to master the art of making his constructs explode, but he had a feeling that he could be doing more with them.
Them exploding into a corrosive mist thing was admittedly useful for when he wanted to do major damage.... But Verge felt that having an alternative just in case would be prudent.
But what other element could he...hold, he had fire attacks, did he not?
Attempting to make an exploding projectile once again this time, he imbued the Crusher Bone with dark flame, causing the metallic projectile he'd thrown to burst into a bright inferno. He was pleased with this result.
Now if he combined the fracturing effect with the explosive effect, he could create something that could cause quite a bit of damage if allowed to connect with his enemies…And hopefully make it much easier to deal with swarms of flyers.
Putting the concepts behind these theories into practice was a strange matter, it seemed that whatever element he put into the bone to make it explode would also affect the shards that it produced. With the wind element shards being coated with corrosive energy and the fire elemental bones releasing razor sharp hot shrapnel. The latter actually seemed to be more effective against the metallic training dummies than the former, with several of the shards melting parts of the dummies that they had come into contact with.
Satisfied with his progress so far, Verge began to take the final step by adding it to his spe....What was that?
Having looked to the side, he found what could only be described as an artificial hill composed entirely out of the Crusher Bones he had been creating, only that they have now been melted together to form a giant mass of slagged bones and metallic skulls, which seem to have been left mostly alone for decoration purposes, with others seemingly having been created wholesale via melting some of the smaller bones together. Small cave-like entrances dotted the construct, with the two largest being a pair of eyes that had been carved into a large, and from what he could tell, artificially created skull towards the front of the fortress, making the thing both the decoration and door at once.
Within moments's his ward crawled out from one of the massive skulls' eye sockets and perched herself on top of the metallic mass that she had melted together, presumably using her natural affinity for fire.
"Rawr!" The small lava dragon roared triumphantly from on top of her small perch "Xia made the largest and bestest of all forts!"
Then she jumped off of the 'fort' and onto Warren's back before giving a happy chirp, it was good to see his wards were getting along.
Verge was more shocked that he had not noticed this…thing being built than anything else, and a quick glance at his student revealed that the younger mon seemed to be of similar opinion.
Unknown to the mon present, the Bone Boomerang Verge had created and thrown would later return and knock out an unfortunate Master Tyrannomon that had been examining the area a day later.
