I just wonder if using the purifying roar would strip away this obviously corruptive power-up, like way back when we saw a... Fugamon? use Dope Cancel on the Centaur Cyborg digimon hopped up on Chikarax.

I'll note, that it was already made a point several times that it's possible to forcefully take another competitor's invitation before their first match. What Gogmamon did was in line with the rules.
As for the cavern setting? It's actually more of a neutral setting than one might think. Verge can see in the dark and is just as home there as Gogmamon.
In fact, the lack of sunlight in this terrain is actually advantageous to Verge given that Gogmamon can't use it to absorb more energy.
Verge suspects that his fire won't be the best tool here. Gogmamon's a vaccine type, and Verge's special moves are virus type. That when combined with Gogmamon's very probable fortitude advantage means any direct damage from special moves will be minimal.
He's very sneaky, and very lucky. Also an idiot, but a surprisingly clever one mind you.
Unfortunately no, Hyogamon's move wouldn't work here. The cocktail of boosts used on Gogmamon are of a different nature.

I know I'm a bit late to the party but if we were going for armour piercing wouldn't screw claw been a better lead then eraser claw or are we saving that one for something with an even beefier defence?

The plan calls for AP moves like eraser claw Screw claw would be included in that as well.
The idea is to take this fight slow and safe at the start and leverage our superior skill as much as possible and keep our full power and boosted modes hidden.
We want to keep our cards close to chest here and only escalate our powers just enough to win.
Sadly the Rock Man is a Vaccine Attribute mon, so the the Viral Corrosion of our Screw Claw gets blunted by that.
