Weird, there's usually a lot more conversation when I'm typing up a segment.
Not much to say.Weird, there's usually a lot more conversation when I'm typing up a segment.
Sad.
Omake:
They didn't have much money.
Her sister worked hard to support both of them, and she did really well too. But there usually wasn't much extra money at the end either.
Which was why they were staring down a cupcake with a single candle in it, Ana blushing and looking down in a little bit of shame and her sister with her tired and surprised eyes, something she'd done a few odd-jobs for the neighbors to get.
"Sorry"
Sega looked at her with a tilt of her head, "For what."
Ana felt her cheeks warm, "For only getting a cupcake."
Her sister glanced between her and the cupcake before a serene, happy smile settled on her face and she said softly and seriously, "No, its perfect Nepgear" before pulling Ana into a hug and blowing the candle out.
With that same smile and tone Sega turned to her, "Thank you. Love you little sis."
Sniffling and with tears rolling down her eyes, Ana beamed at her sister, "Love you too."
Sega sighed affectionately and rubbed away the tears, "Why are you crying silly?"
Ana shook her head and rubbed at her own tears as well, "I don't know. I'm just really happy right now."
Sega chuckled and pulled them both down onto the couch, each with a half a cupcake. And as Nepgear drifted off a little while later, laying on her sister, her head being stroked gently, she heard Sega mutter one last thing before falling asleep.
"Absolutely perfect."
End:
I'm not too sure about this. I had a scene in my head, it was pretty good... then my ADD kicked in, so I forgot parts and had to improvise.
Did someone say last-minute Omake?
Your first warning was the terrible sound. It was as if the Gates of Hell has been swung open, and proven to be in desperate need of some oil. Any ordinary kid would have cowered or ran, but you are Magical Girl Candy Heart. And you will not run when your town is in danger.
Mere heartbeats later you have left Mr. Grady's gym class (via the window), and are rushing towards the sound. Assuming the sound came from the horrible mass of flesh eating the High School a bit down the block. People need your help!
Though your gait was easily double what the 'School Zone' each step seems to come agonizingly slow as the creature rampages. You won't be able to save the school or anyone inside at this rate. As if by unseen cue it turns and begins flowing towards you. Its bulk moving in disgusting ways that still propel it at speed.
The space between you and the Spawn of Mayhem closes rapidly. You see what caused it to give chase, a normal-looking high-school girl. Someone you need to save. The creature tenses and you scream out to the girl to get down. She dodges just in time.
Interposing yourself you scream your name and draw upon your power.
Then everything gets
just a bitC̒͗̉ͦ̕
̎̆ͥOͮ̃͢
̎ͪ̂ͣ͘N̈̊͗̅̆
̴̐̑̈́̂͒̍̂F̄ͭ̒̃̓
̈̿͑̓͒U̎͌͊͐̅ͮ
͊̍̂S̊̀
Ḯ̿̇̅
̇̈͗̕Ń
̿͂͞G̋ͨ̚͟
The world spins and rights itself.
Your mother hugs you and calls you brave, then directs your attention to a few pieces of the Spawn of Mayhem. It must have split itself to avoid attention, but you aren't afraid of it. It is weak with itself split, and your mother lent you a champion to protect you. It won't get the drop on you this time!
The first blow against you hurts. Even with your magic dulling the pain and erasing the wound you scream at the sensation of your own flesh burning where the monster? Punched you? With burning light?.
The fragment hangs in the air, a mass of flesh that hides against the night sky while simultaneously being shining with bright light. Your vision seems to flatten, but is normal now. You draw on your strongest magic to crush the flying monster before it strikes you again.
All for nothing. The mass of flesh emerges from the vortex of candy unscathed. And before your shocked eyes it stretches forth a portion of itself to attack you. It strikes you as a torrent of unyielding light. A tiny gateway to a pure realm of light. A hook to draw you offstage from your own life.
And all the horror surrounding you vanishes.
Omake:
"Nepgear."
"aaaaaaaa oof, um, yes Rei?"
"Your bleeding. And drooling."
"Eeeh? Aaaah!"
"Just get some towels, okay?"
@Gore17, Could you please explain the colored one to me? I don't understand.Sad.
Did see it.
In fact, placing these here for reference purposes.
Um... I'm almost positive he means this.@Gore17, Could you please explain the colored one to me? I don't understand.
When he says this:Taking a bit of pity on the poor idiot, you strangle a giggle and quickly transform. A quick swing of the Panzer Blade, and Samael was scrambling for a robe as his crystalized clothes shattered and fell away. You stare insensate, weapon outstretched as the soldier covers himself up. "So... What are you looking for me for?"
Beefcake~
Omake:
"Nepgear."
"aaaaaaaa oof, um, yes Rei?"
"Your bleeding. And drooling."
"Eeeh? Aaaah!"
"Just get some towels, okay?"
But what does the blood have to do with it?!?!?
I'm honestly shocked you don't know about the Nosebleed trope. It even appeared earlier in the story.
That was the inspiration, yes, but I made it deliberately unclear: could have been anything from Ana returning from a battle and snuggling up to Rei, to the base getting hit by a Nudifier.

-+Notices a post+-With a smile on your face, and a spring in your step, you almost skip across the base as the Counter Force Personnel bustle about on various errands of their own. A few nod to you as you pass. Some you recognize from the food fight the previous day, others from the previous base entirely. And one or two, from flashes of the battle in New York. Your existence as a Magical Girl was spreading around the camp, more and more soldiers memorizing your face and tacking it up alongside Carnage and Truth's in their thoughts.
The quick trip to the training grounds was short and without fanfare. Once there, with the happy spring to your step not yet leaving you, you transform. Once your glow fades, and your weapon rests within your hand, you float into the air. You take the Purifier Beam in both ands and hold it up to your face, gazing at the bright blade.
Holding it like this, you can feel the well of power that you drew from to fuel your abilities. A single drop in a bucket you cannot begin to measure. But at the same time... You can feel the buffer. The separation between you and that unimaginable well.
"What are you...?"
Magical girls were Humanity's ultimate trump card. They could be pulled again, and again, and the chances that their foes had anything capable of stopping the average Magical Girl on hand when they showed up was slim to none. Unless it was a specifically designed trap to draw one in. And even then the chances of being able to handle the one that shows up relied on little more than pure luck.
At the same time though, Magical Girls were restricted by the collective Human perception.
The genre itself started out as slice of life stories. Of mostly average girls using magic to spread love and happiness to others. Then over time it changed to Magical Girls being what amounted to willing child soldiers fighting back the forces of evil with little to no support from where it should have been coming from.
And from that came the preconceptions that lead to Human Magical Girls being what they were.
The first: a Magical Girl was always exactly that. A young female, with incredible magical abilities. They were always few and very far between.
The second: a Magical Girl needed no prior training to use the basics of their powers. They were combat capable and ready right out of the gate. Training would make them more versatile and stronger, but they didn't need it to use their powers.
The Third: a Magical Girl could operate completely and totally independent of any kind of support network. This also translated into being capable of keeping their existence as Magical Girls a secret from everyone they knew. A kind of passive masquerade if you would.
The Fourth: Magical Girls could operate in teams. Started by Sailor Moon and later carried on by Magical Knight Rayearth, it was widely accepted that teams of Magical Girls could operate on a far larger scale together than alone.
The Fifth: Magical Girls that operated best in teams would always share themes and names. This made it easier for potential Magical Girls find those she was best suited for working with, but it could also cause problems. Problems you probably wouldn't have to worry about because they tended to come from personality clashes more than anything.
The Sixth: Magical Girl names always meant something. Either the source of their powers or some deeper meaning then that, they meant it. An unlucky Magical Girl would find their name defining their powers and the form they would take, while a lucky one would get something weird. Like you and Candy Heart.
There were numerous more than that, but those were the big ones that were passed around to other members of the Unified Light by the Counter Force because the rest lay in pop-culture references no one else would get.
These facts were well understood by pretty much everybody. And since they were true between all Magical Girls...
"What does my name mean?" Your gazes focuses into a soft glare as you consider the question. SOLID CORE. 'Core' would point towards you being the power source for... something, but why 'solid'? "A Synonym for Solid is Hard... Heh, I'm literally Magical Girl Hardcore. Sega would get a laugh out of that." Your heart clenches at the thought of your sister. She would be nineteen this year, and graduating her college classes. "Wish you were here Sega..." If you took the assumption that you were a power core, instead of just another Magical Girl...
"The Purifier Beam is probably some kind of release valve." That made sense. So long as you held the trigger, the Purifier Beam had never seemed to run out of charge for it's attack. It would spout a continuous beam of energy so long a the 'valve' was open... "Well... Let see if I'm right."
You swing the Purifier Beam out to the side, taking aim at the ground, away from the base. A moment to make sure there was nothing else in an area, you pull the trigger. The beam that comes out is larger than you remember it being from your fight with the Spawn of Mayhem. Instead of being around the size of your torso, what instead spears across the space is enough to envelope a fully grown man. As the energy hits the ground, surrounding shrubbery dries out almost instantly and ignites into miniature pyres.
Still holding the trigger, you sweep the beam across the ground, and you listen to it as it tears through rock and dirt. Bushes and grass ignite along the edge of it's path, molten rock cooling into crackling glass as the heat dissipates at an unnatural pace. In moments, a line of destruction arcs across the ground below you: smoke rising from burning plants, while the angry red scar slowly blackens. The new ditch is two feet wide and at least four deep.
"Seems I'm right." If the Purifier Beam was a release valve... then Core Purge was probably opening a connection directly to the Core. "Meaning, if I do it right, I might be able to open lesser connections to other receivers and pass them a bit of extra power." You didn't have a clue if you were even using the analogy correctly, but it fit.
"I think today was successful." More than the last three days combined.
-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-
"Hey Nepgear." It's nearly an hour later when you finally track down Rei by the western edge of the base. Goddess Gold is overseeing several dozen different workers as they help clear away a large area of shrubbery and rocks. "Haven't seen you since the party. Having fun?"
Your grin is brilliant. "Lots. I think taking yesterday off did me a lot of good. And the party this morning was a lot of help as well. I'm happy you managed to talk me into it."
Rei nods, grinning, she then turns back to the work she was overseeing. "That's good. You need to remember that growing stronger is all well and good, but if you don't take a break once in a while then it's all for nothing." You don't know what to say to that. Instead you look past her to the work crew.
"So what are they up to?"
She blinks and looks at you for a moment in confusion. Then rolls her eyes as she realizes something, "I forget that you don't keep up on recent events on the front lines. Everyone else in the base knows it: Heaven is planning a new offensive to try and break the stalemate that's sprung up. Talks have been going on for a while, but recently the Pillar agreed to let them use Earth as a staging ground. We're going to be playing host to a group of Angels for a short while, while they gear up to assault the front lines. The Counter Force is also drawing together some forces to help out. Heck, I think even the Empire and Home Realm are seeing what they can throw into it."
You blink. That was news... but what did it have with you? "Umm... So how can I expect this to effect Team GEAR?" You'd rather it wouldn't, but you were unlucky like that. Better to figure out what was going to hit you now, instead of right before a fight.
"Well... Heaven has recently had a population boom so they have a few more angels then they know what to do with: which is the reason they're planning this offensive. So you might get an angel temporarily assigned to Team GEAR for field experience. Don't be surprised if one moves in with us over at my tent."
Well, that could be worse... and that reminds you...
"Hey Rei?"
"Hm...? GAH!"
Your tackle-glomp takes her by complete surprise. You're light, and weigh little compared to her, but it's enough to carry the older female to the ground in one loud thump that draw everyone's attention. Spluttering in annoyance she forces herself onto her back despite your grip, but whatever scolding he had been planning on giving you dies on her lips as she takes in your smile.
"I wanted to say thanks for everything. And so far your headpats are still the best." With that, you unlatch from your grip and stand. "If everything ever gets too much, just remember that I'm still here, ok?" And before she gets a chance to answer you skip away.
They day is pretty much over. Short, but sweet, you find that you can't really care: it was all worth it.
