Crystalwatcher's Magical Girl Quest!

people only remember candhyeart because when she died the second time traumatic events still had some fucking weight behind them. The angel doctor should have been a big deal. Nep straight up killed a civilian horrifically at point blank range. but by that point, it was just fucking Tuesday, nothing special. If the order we murdered those two were swapped we'd care about the doctor and just be glad we only killed a weak girl before finding out that the reanimated could be saved.
To emphasize this point I'd like to quote my reaction to whatshisname, which itself is a sign of how humdrum it was since I don't even remember his name, exploding:
Actually this brings up a serious problem I had with the update:
+10xp Remembering a Hero
+15xp Echoes of Legends
+30xp Celestial Synchronization Witnessed
+300xp The CALAMITY
+75xp The Conceptual Language
+25xp Memories of [PEACE]
+5xp Truth of [WAR]
Where is the XP for killing Laic? I feel quite cheated here. Nepgear brutally, he exploded into a shower of gore, killed someone but didn't get any XP from it.

The big problem with trauma in this quest is that we've long since past the point Nepgear should have broken. It's understandable that the full effects of what Nepgear has been through aren't being shown since by this point she should be completely non-functional and that would pretty much be the end of the quest. That however does have consequences. Nepgear routinely shrugs off what should be horrific trauma so is it really surprising that the players are doing the same?

For a more recent example of this look back at Operation Starborn. The mooks guarding the platform were all slaughtered by Sixth Heaven and Nepgear had literally zero reaction. Seriously it wasn't even noted in Nepgear's thoughts until Uni brought it up. I find this example particularly relevant because while Uni is breaking down in tears while her sister hugs her Nepgear basically says she is too traumatized to care about people dying anymore and how Uni should cherish her softness while she still can.

And like I said, the point about excessive levels of trauma being desensitizing is fair. Hell I know exactly what you mean from my own experiences with other pieces of fiction.

The thing I took issue with was the implication that Crys should've just not had anything happen with Fable Heart's interaction. Candy's death happened long before Nepgear reach the point of "meh, I don't give a shit". It left a mark. It's not as if no longer being hurt by new things erases the hurts of the past. Traumatic events aren't some kind of inventory system, Nepgear isn't like "oh some new bad thing happened, I'd better drop this old one so I can pick it up".

Candy left a wound and the wound was just poked with a stick. If Crys had nothing whatsoever happen because of that I would be the one ranting at Crys because that would just be a massive fuckup and a waste of the entire narrative thread. And yet that's what Random's post read like it was advocating.

it's not about candy hear,t it's about every other form of interesting interaction being replaced with pointless trauma. Sure maybe this one isn't pointless, but frankly, I'm so fucking sick and desensitized to this shit that I don't care. The last dozen or so mind breaking bits of trauma slid right the fuck off with no narrative consequences, why is this one different?

this is not character development. this is just "you know that thing you haven't even brought up since it happened? feel bad about it all at once!" for trauma to be actually meaningful it needs to have a constant presence, something the pc actually seems to care about in particular. candy heart very much has not been a consistent burden on nepgears mind. terrible things happen to the PC and they don't fucking affect her without a reminder of them literally in front of her. Nep has a switch between depressed and fine, and it seems to flip back to fine without at most an update of any major trauma, and only slides back to depressed if she has someone rubbing it in her face for a scene. None of it is meaningful, none of it is important, all of it feels like narrative nerf darts that go back into the box when its' not in front of her.

this enter scene was narrative pointless, and I am genuinely surprised anyone would vote for it. Nothing was resolved, no new information was given to the players, no quest lines or anything opened up. Just a knife into an old wound that nep all of a sudden cared about again. If nep had fucking said something about how candy heart died, or maybe did some thinking about how she hadn't felt anything about candy heart for weeks or done anything but just suffer pointlessly then yeah, this would have been more than another one for the pile, but none of that fucking happened. Maybe its supposed to be the first step on a path, but we are so fucking pressed for time that's the same as the rest of it never happening.

Well, can't really do anything about what's already happened, but I can keep a note for future Workshop planning sessions. *Shrugs*

[X] Search the town together. If you run into Red Knight together, Kat might be able to keep things from coming to blows.

[x] Save EXP
Mode Change: Apocalypse (Barrel Extended) / Unstoppable (Barrel Retracted)
So Wide Spray and Maximum Penetration options. Beautiful
The comparison to the angel Doctor is a false equivalence, because unlike Candy Nepgear had never met him, never interacted with him before, there was no emotional weight to his death, for her, other than the immediate shock and horror of "oh no someone died". Hell, just look at the readerbase: none of you gave a shit about him either. I'd be genuinely surprised if most of you remembered his name. In contrast Candy's death stuck. People remember Candy. Nepgear remembers Candy.
Also the biggest thing about Candy.

The players ultimately decided not to risk it and just kill her. Only to learn afterwards that we could have saved her. THAT I think, burns more than anything else. She died to tactical ignorance and expedience.

I think what @random_npc is saying is it felt like I dropped the ball on the scene.

Thinking over what everyone's said, and Anastasia's short interaction with Fable Heart over Candy Heart's death, I left what feels like an entire plot thread and chance at expanding on Candy Heart's impact on Nepgear's life more or less just handing in a pool of "have this and feel bad" instead of... going into it. Explaining more on why Nepgear still feels that way about Candy. As well as investigating how all the constant death around her has been warping her ability to care about new characters as they come in.

In this what you mean Random?

@Crystalwatcher any chance of a interlude or something showing the chaos happening in ToHO with the return of Grey Champion and others? :p
>Asking for a PHOToHO Interlude
Found the masochist :V

TL;DR:
Thread titled "Hey guys I'm back, what'd I miss?" followed by several pages of a mixture of people going wtf and people who are severely unamused by some hacker stealing a dead MG's account and impersonating her. Eventual mod confirmation she's the real deal, then the rest of the thread is everyone losing their fucking minds with occasional people actually trying to be helpful and fill Champ in on what she missed.

Honestly out of everyone that died in this quest only two people have a place in my heart.

Candy heart, because even when evil she thought she was working on the side of justice and saving the world. She was also pretty much harmless but we killed her anyway.

Richard Nixon because god damn his cameo was hilarious to me and I'm sad it went away so soon. I wanted to find out if he was a crook or not!

Fixed. :D

I'll think about it.

[X] Save EXP

No opinion on the two choices right now, I might come back to this.

Either way, I certainly did not expect Core Purge + Spell to end up being the Progenitor Frame's weaponry. Also, I snickered a little when Nepgear ended up dealing more damage than Uni anyway. I also laughed over our very first successful activation of Echo being on the doomcannon.

That aside, the afternoon might get tight; we have the mission in Russia and the one about Gaia and Shiva/Sil due on the current day. The former seems like it would be a short one, but we might get Goddess Grey dropped on our heads.

I'm kinda surprised that the big 'status update on everything' in the Command 'Tent' didn't include Nepgear finding out that she hit Top 20 (even though she might no longer be in that group with the return of the Old Guard).
They are trying to keep Nepgear lowkey. That means keeping her out of those lists as best as possible.

Not that Nepgear is making their job easy :p
