Crystalwatcher's Magical Girl Quest!

Poor Michael. It's sad but true that he just doesn't have anything to make him special or stand out compared to our teammates. Atheist is nice but it just doesn't compare.
Armor of Light is just Atheist but better. Poor guy never had a chance.

Also, @crystalwatcher, if Gabriel's healing couldn't heal her face then it wouldn't be able to heal just about anything else. Any sufficiently big wound will leave scars. And by sufficiently big I mean pencil eraser sized and up. If the magic couldn't fix that then it can't fix anything else, and it's incredibly arbitrary to say that no, her magical magic magically can't heal the magical being's magical face because reasons. Not even magical reasons, just ones up there with 'You click the button on the immovable rod, and proceed to become a bloody paste as it punches a hole in the planet because it's literally immoveable'.

[X] Buy Covering Fire 75 XP
[X] Buy Anti-Air Beam 50 XP

A squad-support buff and something cheap. Here's to hoping it's gating better things.

Armor of Light is just Atheist but better.

Actually I wouldn't be so sure about that. Armor of Light counters all spells while Atheist reduces damage from magic. The difference?

Atheist would reduce (ranged) shots from Nepgear's Purifier Beam as well as the damage dealt by Core Purge but Armor of Light would not negate them. Both of those are magic based attacks, rather then say magically propelled projectiles would likely wouldn't count, but neither are spells so Atheist would apply but not Armor of Light.

Maybe her healing abilities just work the same way that Crazy Diamond does?
I have no context.

Fair enough.

What I don't get is why crystalwatcher didn't simply reduce the multiplier for the armor prior to having the update live. I mean he posted Gabriel's new stats before it FROZEN GEAR went up, after all.

I just have a misconception about there being balanced difficulty in the Quest, I guess.

There is a balanced difficulty.

Everything we fight > Us.

That is the only truth of this world. [/Suddenly FMA exposition and intro voice]

But seriously. We're tanky, but nobody we've ever seriously fought wasn't capable of eating us in a single serious hit. I didn't even intend to work seriously in there three times, but there you have it.

@crystalwatcher, it is possible to completely heal Gabriel face? Even if magic can't completely heal the scar, human science should be able to since we have something call plastic surgery. Do they have regeneration treatment?
Just constantly picking at her skin while she flares her healing aura would be enough, because it's not going to regenerate scar tissue, it's going to regenerate her face. Otherwise her healing doesn't work at all.

I'm fairly sure her healing aura was healing the wound, actually. Rei said it was "wasn't fast enough", so I see two possibilities:
1) Angels have a naturally fast healing, which beat-out her aura.
2) The Aura results in scarring if the healing is too slow.

And why wouldn't it regenerate scar tissue?

And why wouldn't it regenerate scar tissue?
Because scar tissue isn't naturally part of her face, it's the body's "uhhh, I forgot what's supposed to be here" filler. Choco's assuming that magic healing being magic healing, it'll regen her face, and not the messy biological paint-over.
Or, at least I think that's what they're saying.

Yeah, and my point is "how would the magic know"?

Presumably, once scar tissue began to form, the aura stopped duplicating the lost tissue, and just speed up the scarring.

The Healing Aura said:
"Wait, the body is utilizing this stuff to heal itself. Whoops, better use that instead!"

@crystalwatcher A couple of questions if you don't mind? I'm re-reading the story and somethings have stuck out at me.

Are Truth, Carnage, and Micheal still missing a arm?

Also, with The Children of Nightmare having forced the Unified Light back until the Fall Of Rome, what is the general reaction of Core Connection/The Divinity Affinity canceling out the Greater Nightmare's False Existence ability? For both the UD and the UL?

I can answer those!

No, Yes, Maybe.

Truth has regeneration, so she simply was out for a few days while she regrew her limbs.

Carnage also has regeneration, but hers is based around combat. She also mentioned it was "impossible" to heal outside of combat(reason unknown). She has a prosthetic instead.

Michael likely either has a similar prosthetic, or they used magic to regrow/replace it.

Edit: Incidentally, Carnage mentioned her arm would be "sealed over" by the time she'd next be in combat, with the implication that would mean her arm wouldn't regenerate.

"No! If I can't have her, no one will! You can all burn and rot for all I care, but Anastasia is mine!" She releases a single hand that is then used to sucker punch your sister, tossing her aside like a ragdoll before it returns to your neck again.

You know while Nega-Sega is all kinds of Yandere crazy I think the underlined bit speaks volumes as to regular Sega's thought process. Remember her only problem with the Unified Darkness* was that if they won odds are Nepgear, who at the time was just a normal human girl, would be neither safe nor happy, what with being basically a slave to those stronger then her.

*Which as I'll remind people consists of Dark Star, whose reason for starting the war was:
wanting the strong to rule the weak with lots of blood and chaos mixed in.
, Thirteenth Hell, biblical hell made real through the power of belief, and the Children of Nightmares, a group usually considered the Ultimate Evil.

You struggle. Your hands claw at False-Sega's as your feet kick against the ground uselessly as you try to twist out from under her. Why did I change back to my civilian form?

I think the important question here is why didn't she change back? Is there some reason Nepgear couldn't transform back into Solid Gear while Nega-Saga was strangling her?

But you know why, two weeks was apparently enough for you to forget tiny details of your sister, like her exact coloring. You disgusted yourself.

This. This right here is almost certainly going to be Nepgear's main source of trauma from that whole event. That she forget Sega.

Vengeance? Of course that's kinda moot since Sega's alive again. Um. Vengeance for the friends you probably had in your home town? Because all your new friends/sisters are fighting and you couldn't live with yourself if you abandoned them? Because the Unified Darkness are quite literally objectively evil? Because you're getting paid lots of money?

Although going by:
"That's it, you die!" Real-Sega's voice shatters your death wish as False-Sega's attention snaps around.
I might have been misinterpreting this and Nepgear is asking why is she fighting, Nega-Sega, to stay alive. Which is way too depressing to think about so I'm going to stop right there.

On the bed past her is San, also asleep and resting peacefully as she clings to several chains that lead to Rei's closed fist.

It says a lot about how much San has missed her sisters over the last 5+ years that she is clinging to Rei's chains.

As you watch you can't help but note how easily her toga catches on the edges of the small seat she had been sleeping in, as well as how well proportioned she is.
Her gaze slowly sweeps through the tent, searching for what you could only assume was changes before they came to rest on your own owl-eyed look as you gazed at her from beneath the edges of your covers trying to hide a blush.
You find yourself underneath a rather large pile of soft and malleable flesh and wonder what has become of your life. And your orientation.
Or at least you are sitting. Rei and San are more standing next to you while Gabriel is trying to coax you into her lap so she could cuddle you for some reason.

...Nepgear/Gabriel?

I have no idea where this came from. Normally I'd say I approve, big shipper here, but this really seems to have come out of nowhere, especially since they've known each other for one day.

Hell romance hasn't even been on Nepgear's mind at all this quest since she's been rather focused on "OhgodI'msodead! Sega's dead! OhgodI'msodead! Jessica and Richard are dead! OhgodI'msodead! Why does everyone I care about keep dying? OhgodI'msodead!"

Even after your mother had turned abusive, Sega had remained unbowed and unbroken, despite loving her almost as much as she had loved you.

Wow. Um. That's. Wow.

Sega apparently, Nepgear seems to think so anyway, was just as dedicated to their mother as she is to Nepgear. Considering that their mother started abusing them both, most notably for Sega she was abusing Nepgear, and committed suicide when Sega won custody over Nepgear...

This sounds like a massive bundle of trauma just waiting to explode at some point.

You cough into a fist, "Long story... but... it doesn't annoy me so much any more." Considering it was Richard that had originally brought it up, and the whole joke originated from Sega herself and you thought she had been dead...

Yeah. I imagine things like annoying nicknames stop bothering you so much when they are the only thing you have to remember your dead sister and later your dead teammate.

I thought you were dead! I knew you were dead, I saw-" Your mouth freezes as the image of Sega's corpse doesn't so much as flash, but more fills your mind's eye.

As a reminder:
You had lived alone with your elder sister in the house, but you knew she hadn't survived. The leg sticking out from beneath the crushed pickup truck with her favorite keychain hanging out of the only visible pocket was all you needed to know the truth of that.

Then I was talking to Goddess Red about the current sate of the War and how you've been doing, and how we were going to end it... My memories are kind of shoddy from your teammates shooting me."

Sega needs debriefing like now if she hasn't already. Even with kinda shoddy memories she could be a god damned treasure trove of information on the Unified Darkness' resources, what intelligence it has on the Unified Light, and it's plans for the future.

Yet more evidence recovering Sega was a massive coup for the good guys.

"It's just... I didn't want to hurt her, you know? I thought..." She ducks her head and scratches at her scalp again, "Hell. I don't know what I was thinking."

Hmm. I wonder if this was because of the brainwashing, seeing the Unified Darkness as her allies, or because Sega desperately wants family to connect with. Remember she was just as attached to her mother as she is to Nepgear but their mother is dead now and itwasallherfault. Getting another sister, which Nega-Sega would have basically been, would have been something amazing for her. Being responsible for killing another member of her family? Not so much.

If you were capable of not holding the False-Sega's action against your real sister... and between those moments, you find your answer.

"Sega!" Your heart feels as if it is trying to leap from your chest, and you dash across the gap that had been formed as if it never was. You cling to your sister as the tears you have gathered over the last few days pour from you.

/d'awwww

:D

Your own question had come up when Rei had paused to explain what exactly had happened to the other base -the name of which you still didn't know- and that lead into an explanation of the last dozen or so missions you had been on.

Was that hyperbole or is poor Nepgear's head so full of fluff she can't even count to 3?

Gabriel, who had only joined you team before the mess at the research center, had been staring at you with a slowly increasing look of utter horror on her face.

Gabriel: "Oh god! I thought missions like the last one where the exception not the rule! I'm going to be dead before I even reach a month old aren't I?"

Turns out the rest of the team is dead but she survived because she had volunteered to be one of the human trials.

Ah suicidally depressed masochist lady:
But I think I found the office of the female volunteer. She had a personal journal alongside her actual research notes.
I'm no phycologist, but I think she was suffering from depression. Probably hoped the thing they were working on would kill her or something. When it didn't and she survived, she started doing little 'experiments' on herself to see how far her regeneration went. Started with 'little' things like cutting her arteries, before she eventually moved up to mutilating large portions of her body when no one was keeping an eye on her.
Well... whatever started her on it, she eventually started getting off on the pain. Diary cuts out a few days ago so I'm not sure how far that progressed but... Chances are she's still alive at least.
I'm sure nothing bad will come from this.

This idiot apparently took a spray of xenomorph blood to her face, and her little aura wasn't strong enough to heal it fast enough before it scarred.

Hm. @crystalwatcher - Can we spend XP to improve stats/abilities/spells/ect on members of Team GEAR? If not how exactly do they go about ranking up stuff like Aura of Light?

according to the science division your team passed review and is slated to get powered armor.

Somehow I'm not surprised. What with James having both stalled Goddess Grey for a prolonged period of time and engaged the Maiden of the East in melee combat resulting in him severing her weapon arm. Or how Samael can learn any spell of any affinity and can either pillage or generate new spells from Magical Girls which makes him both a very dangerous practitioner and a potentially amazing magical instructor. Then there is Gabriel who despite being a trainee Angel only nine days old is stupidly powerful, as in fighting the Maiden of the West and seriously injuring her powerful. Michael gets serious props just from standing beside all these amazing people and not dying despite being a pretty normal human.

"Nep... you've been out since the day before yesterday."

@crystalwatcher doesn't that mean you should update the timeline on the front page?

Problem something like:
Day 12: Glee Gear to Future Gear
Day 13: Future Gear to Team Gear
Day 14: Timeskip
Day 15: Frozen Gear to ???

And in the middle of the little research area stand four white suits.

Huh? Who is the fourth for? Samael already got his:
Turns out Samael already got his armor and is in his workshop customizing it.
and that leaves just James, Michael, and Gabriel. Did someone else get assigned to Team GEAR and we just haven't found out yet?

"Anastasia! It's been a while. You never came by to visit after you asked me about open slots for armor testing." The young scientist hasn't changed much since you last saw her.

Huh? When did Alexandra learn Nepgear's real name? It's almost never used and she called us Solid Core the last time we spoke:
"I'll need to get the full story from you at some point. But I'm sure talking about the fight isn't what your here for. What can the science division help you with, Solid Core?"

When I heard that your team got accepted I jumped on the chance to be the one in charge of designing their armor.

Yay! Team GEAR has it's own Science Lady! They really are moving up in the world.

Gabriel should work like a charm! And if we're right, we'll be able to scale it for other races as well!

This could be big. We know it scales to Angels are the very least, since it works for Gabriel, which alone is a massive bonus. After all it means all War Angels, assuming this can be sufficiently mass produced, get upgrade to:
War Angel

which will be great considering they apparently have a massive surplus of Angels right now.

I was told it's some kind of attempt at a dream-metal that went wrong and is roughly as heavy as titanium with only double the protection.

How is doubling the strength to weight ratio of titanium "going wrong"? Sure it's not graphene or something bullshit like that but it's still quite impressive.

We also got permission from the clergy to have the armor blessed, so demonic enemies will find themselves weaker when fighting you. Good thing that, considering some of the rumors I'm hearing about you all.

What you mean the one about how Team GEAR takes regular walks into the jaws of death and daily trips into the mouth of hell? That's pretty accurate all things considered.

I'm the first angel ever to not only fight directly beside a Magical Girl, but also to try out a Human-designed power armor! I'm going down in the history books! I'd like for my death to not be something stupid

Well. Gabriel seems awfully fatalistic here. We're going to have to work hard and show that despite being thrown not simply into the frying pan or even the fire but into the nuclear furnace at the heart of the sun we'll still find a way to bring her back alive, if not fully intact.

Why didn't she, you mean? 'cause it's kinda implied why she changed to civvies.

that seems to be the implication, yes.

Graphene is actually super brittle, IIRC. ubertanium seems more impressive.

Gaberiel feeds on light. Nepgear literally glows with purity. She's tasty

Already answered long ago. Team grows via events and plot

Damn typos!

Graphene is actually super brittle, IIRC. ubertanium seems more impressive.

I actually meant in that Graphene seems to do a million and one new and amazing things with more being discovered every week. That is what makes it a dream-material.

That said Graphene is actually pretty good as an armor, it's capable of tanking 10x the kinetic energy as steel. Sure the single layer stuff cracks easily but that's why scientists are working on ways of layering it or incorporating it into a composite structure to prevent that.
