Difference between the Horde and the Imperium is that the imperium response to lost territory is to glass it from orbit. And if that doesn't work throw a local moon at it.

Tho I do support subverting the local imperial rule, it seems easier and far safer to do so ala local channels.
Wrong thread, or is the quest suddenly being invaded by a second QM I was previously unaware of?

Food isn't even that much of a concern for the witch; rather, it merely seeks to find a place where the view is an ideal one. Unfortunately, because the view never changes, the witch can never be satisfied.
Freakin tourist...
Sayaka never had a super move, Oriko never had a super move. I don't think it's so much of a hard and fast rule that magical girls get super moves, and more that the smarter and more versatile girls are able to ladder their way into stronger attacks through creative use of their toolkit- Like how Oriko turned her drones into the anchor points for barriers, then used that to make massive barrier lattices, then used that to make a railgun; or how Mami taught herself about how firearms worked and turned her ribbons into muskets and damn near every other form of single-shot firearm she could think of.

A more straightforward girl (Kirika) or a more straightforward toolkit (timestop) don't lend themselves to that same level of toolkit versatility and thus don't lend themselves to laddering into "super moves."

Miyuki's main power is the ability to see through illusions, with a pair of weapons that back up her own natural abilities. I can't really say what sort of laddering she'd be able to achieve with a toolkit like that. She could probably get as far as making more swords at once a la Sayaka, or more pistols at once for elemental combination attacks.

It was one thing when you stole material from everyone else, but what do you think you're doing stealing from me? I made this exact same joke back when Miyuki first joined the team.
On supermoves, what we've seen is more like...it depends on the girl's personality, but if you give a 10-13 year old magic they're pretty likely to try to make something of the like.

Its about the right age to be at least a little chuunibyou and hey, they really got powers.
As far as I know all of Mami's students and their students developed supermoves except Homura. Even Kyouko, though she discarded hers with her trauma.

So by extension: I believe any magical girl who manages to stay hopeful and optimistic through their newbie stage would try to develop one. The ones who don't have already lost hope.

I maintain that it requires both a versatile toolkit and a personality willing to experiment. You point to Homura as the one example of one of Mami's students never developing a super move, and that's entirely on her grossly limited toolkit. We know she must have experimented with what her powers can do - how much she can store in her shield, for example, or the fact that we never see any other PM using their magic to generate offensive mana bolts (even though we never see Homura use that ability again) or manipulate objects the way Homura does with the truck and the SSM launcher pads - but because she was stricken with a toolkit that leaves a lot to be desired in terms of combat versatility she's never able to develop anything.

Sayaka is another example of a Mami student (both spiritually, and literally in TDS and some other timelines) that never develops a super move, but it's because of her flaws as a person and not the flaw of her toolkit. There's concept art showing that her sword is capable of changing shape and turning into a bladed whip, the trigger on the shaft can be used to launch the sword blade, but we never see her use these or attempt to try and play with her swords in any way other than making+throwing them, even after seeing how Kyouko can manipulate her spear. She has the potential to get deeper into what her weapon can do, possibly even to the point of developing a super move or just going full-on Kazanari Tsubasa with the amount of versatility her sword is capable of, but she never does anything because Sayaka has a very straightforward mindset and a very narrow view of what she is and should be.

Day 43 Chapter 12
[X] Plan Tiro Fulmine

The tear in reality at the water's edge deposits you into a forest with a skeletal and dying treeline. Bathed in crimson and violet, the dying forest gives way to a clearing where a thick tree sits, reaching for the ever-distant sky. Then, the branches of the tree shake as no wind dares to blow through the forest, and the trunk reaches out to grab for the tip of your party's spear.

And the tree is the witch.

"Oi!" Kyouko calls out as she stabs at the grasping hand with her spear, parrying its grabs and keeping her distance from the secondary hands rising from the ground. "Keep yer hands ta yerself. Only Blueberry's allowed ta touch this hot bod."

"I will let you keep tonight's Grief Seed if I never have to hear you say that again," Nagatsuki Miyuki retorts, loosing bolts of lightning from her pistol onto several nearby secondary hands. "Seriously, keep that to yourself."

"Deal." Kyouko smirks as her spear slices through the hands, splitting bark and sending wood splinters flying in all directions. Crimson hair flies wildly as Kyouko weaves in and out of the witch's hands with precise footwork, alternating her strikes between bark-splitting thrusts of her spear and scorching lashes of fire from her Sowilo rune. "So hey Spooky, Mami, we got a plan ta take care'a this one or are we just doing this everyone fer themselves?"

You need only a moment to take stock of your options before you say "Yes, we do." First, "Tomoe-san, Wunjo, now." You hate to sound snappy, but keeping your tone under control while trees try to grab at you from every angle is hardly the easiest thing you've ever done.

"On it!" Tomoe-san's voice is almost drowned out from the constant barrage of musket-fire coming from all sides as she tears through the thick of the witch's hands. In short order you can feel Wunjo's power filling your body, and Tomoe-san calls out "Nagatsuki-san, you're with me! We'll do what we can to take out as many hands as possible for the others!"

"Right!" Narrowly avoiding a spray of wood splinters as lightning tears through an encroaching hand, Nagatsuki Miyuki ducks and rolls under the witch's attack - a spray of sticky, clear golden liquid; sap, perhaps; or an acid of some kind? - to join Tomoe-san on the firing line.

"Mikuni-san, the witch has a projectile weapon!"

"Way ahead of you, Tomoe-san!" Mikuni Oriko calls back, throwing up a barrier in order to block the spray of sticky liquid. With the forward movement of the attack halted in its tracks, the barrier flickers away, and Mikuni Oriko's drones return fire on the witch, searing the bark where they make contact.

With all this excitement abound, it was only a matter of time before the witch's familiars made their appearance. They emerge from the trees in the distance, swarms of black-and-white striped creatures you might generously describe as being akin to wasps; only, you've never seen wasps with mouths like a crocodile before. Immediately, Tomoe-san turns her attention to the swarm, and she calls out to her shooting partner "Nagatsuki-san, we're changing focus for now! Concentrate all your fire on the familiars!" before the both of them break their engagement of the witch and its hands to target the incoming swarm.

The number of the swarm is many, and even with Tomoe-san accelerating her rate of fire to match it doesn't appear to be enough. "Incoming!" you call out, as you loose a volley of arrows in the direction of the familiars. Your Isa practice has paid off well; were these smaller targets, you might only need to hit one or two before the splashing ice took out the entire swarm. But these familiars are the size of a small person, and your arrows all find their mark with ease.

Unfortunately, even with your assistance the swarm shows no sign of letting up. "Take out their nests!" you call out to Kyouko. "Burn their nests to the ground!"

You hate to distract Kyouko from her previous work of harassing the witch with spear strikes and lashings of fire, but the pressing swarm has made itself the greater immediate threat. "On it!" she calls out, slamming her spear straight through the mouth of a familiar standing between her and her goal. In a flash she tears her spear free, leaping atop the body of the familiar as it falls and using that as a platform to launch herself forwards. With a circular wave of her finger, Kyouko makes a ring of fire in front of her, which leaps forward through the swarm of familiars to scorch the nests they left behind.

The scent of burning wood and rubber now fills the labyrinth as the nests of familiars are burned away, but at least after a few more rounds of fire the field has been cleared enough of familiars that the majority of you can go back to concentrating on the witch.

"Now, Sakura-san, pin the witch down!"

"It's a tree, Mami!" Kyouko shouts back at Tomoe-san. "Ain't like it's going anywhere if I don't!"

"Just do it!" If Kyouko had anything to say under her breath at Tomoe-san's order, you aren't able to hear it. Kyouko holds out her hand, and a lattice of diamond shards erupt from the ground and spring out from the sides, lacing together to form a fence around the witch. Tomoe-san and MIkuni Oriko look to each other, nodding their heads in unison, and Tomoe-san calls out to you "Now, Akemi-san; send your arrows through Sakura-san's netting!"

It takes you no more than a few seconds to make ready and loose a flight of arrows. Hardened and made to freeze the witch with your Isa rune, the arrows pass through Kyouko's barrier with ease, pinning the witch in place with a thick layer of ice to coat its roots. "Ready, Mikuni-san?" Tomoe-san calls out as the two girls finish preparing their own attacks to loose against the witch.

"As ready as I'll ever be. Let's go!"

"Tiro..."

"-fulmine!"

In unison, Tomoe-san and Mikuni Oriko let loose the combined might of their heaviest attacks. Twin bursts of mana charge towards the witch, and pinned in place by Kyouko's many spears there is nowhere for the witch to run as its form is bathed in blinding golden light.

You hope the attack won't damage the Grief Seed.

You hope you won't be deposited somewhere at the bottom of the display tank when the labyrinth fades.

[ ] Wat do?

[x] If the Witch somehow isn't dead, Finitora Freccia
-[x] If the Witch is dead, hold your breath and make sure everyone's out of the water.
--[x] If the seed did fall into the tank, ask Mami if she can fish it out with her ribbons.

If the Witch somehow isn't dead, Finitora Freccia
Listen, Finitora Freccia isn't the solution to all of Homura's problems. The fact that it takes the majority of Homura's available magical energy reserves while under the effects of Mami's Wunjo definitely plays a part in that assessment. :V

[X] Plan The Mami Mobile (Aquatic Edition)
-[X] If it looks like the Labyrinth is going to collapse
--[X] "Hey Tomoe-san, can you make us a submarine made out of ribbons?"
---[X] Huddle up and so that Mami can encapsulate everyone into her faux-submarine made out of ribbons so that they could get out of there; Mami can retrieve the Grief Seed with her ribbons if they hadn't already taken it while the Labyrinth was still around
-[X] If the Labyrinth remains stable and the Witch appears to still be alive... somehow, then continue fighting as you've been until it dies
-[X] Go back to HQ and pat yourselves on the back for a job well done
--[X] Debrief, though mostly discuss the new Tiro Fulmine and the other applications of Kyoko's barrier spells
---[X] Kyoko can do transfiguration magic too? How did you forget that?
--[X] Telepathically give Kirika a rundown of tonight if she wants to know; turns out that the bloody handprints you saw trapped in an aqueous exhibit were a false alarm, apologize for that
---[X] "So~, how's life over at the Kure residence today? Having fun?"

Was kinda hoping that Homura could have tested out her Gandr shot to see how it interacts with Grief-based entities, but then again a lot was going on I suppose.

Pretty sure I already voted the Inguz training/Assassin discussion parts a while back.

Wonder if any of them will question Homura's fancy new necklace, or if they'll just assume? 🤔

I tried a few times, but there was nowhere I could fit it in where it wouldn't distract from the rest of the flow of combat.

Mami was with Homura when she bought it so she'll know, and Oriko isn't an idiot. Might get a question from Kyouko and Miyuki, that depends more on whether I can fit it in nicely than whether they're stupid enough to not get it.

So, uh, did anyone, at any point in time, explain to Minako the whole "Homura can stop time and Kirika can move free during stopped time" thing?
Eh, hasn't really come up, but if it does then it probably wouldn't hurt to tell her. Minako's been pretty standoffish about learning more than necessary about magical business, so IC Homura/Archer haven't really volunteered the information. Not important enough to bring it up out of the blue considering her prior reactions to talking about magical stuff though.

Do we think Archer would be enjoying himself? Or is being raked over the coals by an overprotective potential father-in-law too much for him to take?

Day 43 Chapter 13
[X] Plan The Mami Mobile (Aquatic Edition)

You hope the combined attack strength of Tomoe-san and MIkuni Oriko won't damage the Grief Seed the defeated witch should be dropping any second now.

You hope you won't be deposited somewhere at the bottom of the display tank when the labyrinth fades.

Fortunately, as the golden light fades ad the defeated form of the witch comes into view, the Grief Seed is safe and unharmed by the combination attack. You aren't sure what it would actually take to damage or destroy a Grief Seed, now that you think about it, but however much it must take, you don't want to be on the receiving end. As Kyouko heads over to collect the Grief Seed as per her earlier deal with Nagatsuki Miyuki - a deal which you and the others have yet to sign off on, you might add - you turn to Tomoe-san and say "In case the labyrinth dumps us somewhere at the bottom of the tank, do you think you could rig something up with your ribbons that would keep us dry and until we can make it back up to the access hatch?"

"I've never tried to make something airtight with my ribbons before," Tomoe-san says, as she puts her ribbons to work in spite of her stated inexperience. "But I can give it a try. I"ll need everyone to huddle up close to me."

Just as strands of gold complete the hollow sphere around you and the others, the flaw in this idea of yours hits you. "So, uh, how are we s'pposed ta know if we're underwater or not?" Kyouko asks. "If we're too heavy ta float, how do we know if we're underwater, where we want ta be, or somewhere else entirely?"

"I hadn't actually thought of that."

Your response earns you a glare from Kyouko, but fortunately Mikuni Oriko has an alternative suggestion in mind. "I can make a barrier around Tomoe-san's ribbons, and when that's all set up Tomoe-san can recall her ribbons and let my barrier serve as our bubble," she says. "That way, we'll at least be able to see what's on the other side from us, and whether we need to take further action."

"It's as good an idea as any," Tomoe-san says. "I'm ready to pull back whenever your barrier is up."

Mikuni Oriko gives the okay to Tomoe-san, and the golden bubble gives way, in its place another, slightly more transparent golden bubble. "The view isn't much," Mikuni Oriko says, as the rising view under water is put on display through the triangular lattices of her barrier. "But at least we know what we're dealing with." Eventually, the rising view from inside the display glass gives way, depositing the bubble out at the access hatch. The top of Mikuni Oriko's lattice gives way, creating a path back to solid ground. "And we've arrived. Thank you for choosing Mikuni for all your aquatic travel needs."

"Now, let's head back home and give ourselves a pat on the back for all our hard work."

Returning to the Tomoe apartment to give yourselves a pat on the back is exactly what you do, and tea and snacks about once everyone is seated comfortably at Caster's table. You know, you've almost gotten used to seeing this table over Tomoe-san's old glass one. You wonder what will happen to it if Caster were to disappear at the end of all this.

"Now, what did we learn tonight?"

"That whenever we gotta deal with a witch and there's water nearby, we're in for some weird shit," Kyouko said. "I thought we learned that already."

Tomoe-san crosses her arms, saying to Kyouko "That's hardly the sort of thing I was referring to, Sakura-san, and you know it."

"I'd like to know more about how you and Mikuni Oriko came up with your combination attack," you say. "Was that something you two have been planning, or was it just a spur of the moment thing?"

"It's something Tomoe-san and I have been talking about on and off," MIkuni Oriko responds. "I suppose getting the timing down so that we were ready at the same time was on me, though; it's easier for me to pace myself against Tomoe-san since I can see when she's going to start and be ready."

"We first tried to test it out when the two of us went hunting together that one night," Tomoe-san adds. "But we messed up the timing then and weren't able to get both shots off in unison. This was our first successful go and-" Tomoe-san glances over to Mikuni Oriko, and the two of them nod their heads. "I'd say it went off rather well; wouldn't you agree, Mikuni-san?"

"Agreed, Tomoe-san."

"Has anyone ever said how scary it is how much firepower you two can dish out?" Nagatsuki Miyuki asks. "Because I think I need to say it if nobody else does."

Tomoe-san shrugs. "What can we say? Mikuni-san and I were both willing to experiment with our powers until we hit on what felt right to us. I'm sure you could do the same if you could put in the time and effort to experiment as well." Tomoe-san smiles and turns to Kyouko , saying "And speaking of putting in the time and effort, I'm glad to see your other abilities haven't dulled any, Sakura-san; but have you come up with anything new in the time we were apart?"

"Nah, too busy trying ta, you know, not die ta work on coming up with anything fancy. All this stuff with runes is the most new stuff I've had ta work with in awhile."

"Well, I hope you're at least enjoying yourself then." Tomoe-san says. "So, how are you coming along with your Sowilo practice? It seems like you're getting the hang of things, from what I've been able to see."

"Better than the other one I tried, that's fer sure." Kyouko stretches her arm out as she reaches across the table for the snack farthest from her, and she says "I dunno what it was, but Berkano just wasn't meshing with me at all. Maybe yer better suited ta use it on account'a yer ribbons, but it just wasn't fer me."

Tomoe-san chews on Kyouko's words for a moment, and she says "Well, if you ever decide to revisit Berkano, perhaps you could try putting it on your barriers the way I put it on my ribbons? Do you htink that could work?"

"I dunno. Maybe. If we make it outta all this on Sunday, maybe I'll give it a try."

With the night's business taken care of, you decide to sit back, relax with some tea, and get in contact with some people. "I'm sorry for having to stop time earlier," you say to Kirika. "We were tracking a witch inside an aquarium, and I thought I saw someone drowning inside one of the displays. Thankfully, it was just a trick from the witch, but in case it was a person I wanted to make sure I got to them before they drowned."

"So you stopped time,"
Kirika responds. "Normally it's just kind of annoying when you stop time, but this time was really annoying. My grandparents came over to visit, and they don't know about you, or magic, or any of this stuff, so I couldn't even get out of explaining things if I had moved during that time."

"Your grandparents came over?"
Now, this has you intrigued. "So, how did Archer take meeting his potential in-laws?"

[ ] Wat do?

I'm stopping here in case we want to ask Kirika anything about her grandparents, as well as to give you guys the chance to decide how Archer's visit with the in-laws would have gone for him. If you've got anything else we're not already scheduled for, feel free to include it in your vote it you want.

[X] Plan Grandparents Failcess
-[X] Thing went good for Archer all things considered, aside from the stress of Kirika's grandparents constantly trying to find something wrong with him and the fact that they think he's too perfect for him to be telling the full truth
--[X] You hear the Minako put a stop to their questioning rather explosively, except apparently Kirika's grandparents took it in stride and acquiesced to their daughter's wishes; they're just happy for their daughter to be as passionate about something as she is with Archer after so long, even if they'll be keeping an eye on Archer for the foreseeable future
-[X] "So, what kind of things do you usually do when your grandparents are visiting?"
--[X] 'Wait a moment...' Try to remember the names or faces of your own grandparents, but fail
---[X] Inwardly panic; exactly how long have you been looping again?

Hey, maybe Kirika's grandparents will visit Minako and Kirika more often now that they have a reason to. Kirika and/or Minako may or may not like this.

I'm guessing that the first chunk of the vote can be done in either Archer's or Homura's POV (from being told be Kirika), or a combination of both.

Hey, maybe Kirika's grandparents will visit Minako and Kirika more often now that they have a reason to.
With only three days left to go? Yeah, no, we're not seeing them again this quest. I only had them make a surprise appearance because you kept tempting me by saying things like
the whole Kure family
and
be prepared for an annoying neighbor incursion upon the Kure residence while you're there
Maybe they'll appear more than once in the sequel, but for the remainder of this quest we've seen the last of them.

Well yeah, obviously they wouldn't visit within the three or so remaining days in this quest, I'm just being optimistic that we can make it to the sequel. :V

Tempted to throw in a line about how Homura forgot that Grandparents were a thing that most people had.
