[X] Plan Date Night: The Reckoning (part 1)
"Just remember to use that responsibly when you two are out there tonight. You never know when you might need it."
You quickly slip the cheat sheet Archer gave you back into your pocket as Madoka asks "So, Homura-chan, where are we going first?"
"Well, our first stop is the-" the train car jostles back and forth as you recall the nearby attractions on Archer's list, silently thanking him for doing way more work than was necessary in planning for his dates with Kure Minako. "-aquarium." Madoka's eyes light up as you spoil the surprise for her. "I saw that it wasn't too far from my apartment, so I thought it would make a good first stop. I had wanted to surprise you, but you're just so insistent." The aquarium in question is about twenty minutes or so by train from your apartment; and coincidentally around the same distance by train from the Kure apartment. You wonder if Kirika has ever been there.
You certainly haven't been, and you have no idea what to expect, aside from the obvious fish, when the train stops and an anxious Madoka drags you by the hand straight to the ticket counter. You didn't even know there was a stop here. You thought you'd have to walk from the station to the aquarium. Are you underneath the aquarium? "Ah, two please," you say to the woman at the counter. Three-thousand Yen for two people, you think, handing one ticket over to Madoka, keeping the other for yourself.
Madoka smiles as she accepts the ticket from you, and her face is tinged with pink as she says "I hope we have fun together, Homura-chan."
"Mommy, why are those two girls red?" you hear, spotting as a small child is led towards the train by his mother.
You hear the mother chuckle, and she says to the boy "They must like each other."
The commentary only serves to further redden Madoka's complexion, and the two of you make haste before anyone else has the chance to comment.
You've never seen so many fish before in your life.
The circular glass window of the first display you and Madoka stop at gives way to a beautiful blue vista of underwater life. Coral and weeds sprouts from the sandy bottom of the display, while all manner of colourful fish in every size imaginable swim past you, or dart in and out of all the little hiding places among the rocky outcroppings along the wall. There are big fish, small fish, flat fish, long fish; and the colours, oh, the colours! Your eyes are enchanted, and you can barely break away from the sight of it all to say to Madoka "I never knew there were so many different kind of fish. Do you know what all of them are?"
"Let's see..." Madoka's finger guides your hand as she points out the fish that swim past her. "That big blue one is an angelfish, but I'm sure what kind it is... The flat one is a stingray... That one's a parrot fish, I think... The ones with the funny noses are called butterfly fish..."
You smile, equally as enchanted by Madoka's impressive animal knowledge. "You sure know a lot about fish, don't you?"
In another display, a school of small, round fish approach the glass where you and Madoka are standing. They have big eyes, small, flat tails, and their bodies are ringed by lots of little spines. "Oh, those are puffer fish," Madoka says. "They blow their bodies up like this-" Madoka demonstrates by puffing out her cheeks. "-when they feel threatened."
"What are those?" you ask, pointing out the quartet of really long fish stalking the bottom of the next display over.
"Those are eels," Madoka says. "Some people think they're really cute, but with faces like that I don't really get the app-eel." You and Madoka both share a chuckle at her joke, and as she leads you away and over towards the next display, you catch a glimpse of the eels staring at you as you leave. "Wow, look at them all float! Aren't they pretty, Homura-chan?"
You aren't quite sure what to think of the translucent blue things floating in the water. "They look like Sayaka's hair came alive and became its own organism," you say to much laughter from your date, as you fail to contain your own laughter as you try to picture one of them wearing Sayaka's hairpin. "But, what are they?"
"Silly Homura-chan, those are jellyfish," Madoka says once her laughter has subsided. "They live out in the ocean, but some of them are really venomous, so you've got to be careful if you go to the beach during their breeding season or you might get stung."
"Have you ever been stung by one before?"
Madoka shakes her head. "No, but mama says she got stung by one when she was younger," she says. "But then, mama says all kinds of things about her youth, so I don't know if she was telling the truth or if she was just saying that to make sure I'd be careful."
You feel something vibrating in your pocket. "I'm sorry, I'm must have forgotten to turn my phone off," you say, but a silent nod from Madoka gives you permission to check your message.
<Mikuni Oriko: You and Kaname-san are at the aquarium, correct? I've seen a witch's labyrinth opening up nearby later in the evening, so keep your eyes open for anything suspicious.>
"Who was it, Homura-chan?"
"Just a message from Mikuni Oriko," you say, returning your phone to your pocket. "She saw a labyrinth opening up nearby later in the evening, so she asked me to be on the lookout for anything suspicious. But hopefully nothing comes of it and we're able to finish our date in peace."
Madoka nods. "I hope so too," she says. "I think it's just awful that all of this stuff keeps happening in Mitakihara. I mean, I don't want it to happen anywhere, but having it happen in the city we all live in is just..."
"I know," you say, taking Madoka's hands into your own. "We're doing everything we can to keep the city safe. Ah!" Hoping to distract Madoka from the bad news, your eyes spot something pleasant. "A dolphin show! Madoka, do you want to see the dolphin show?"
Madoka's face light up, and she asks "Can we?"
"Sure," you say. "I've never seen a dolphin show before, and you certainly seem excited. I'd love to see it with you."
"Is the dolphin show this way?"
You hear a woman's voice speaking in English as you and Madoka walk down the hall to the dolphin show. "No, the sunfish flaming hoop jump arena is over there," her male companion says.
Foreign tourists? You look over to Madoka, but before you can ask her anything she nods, giving you her silent blessing. You turn towards the foreigners, and in the best English you can muster you ask them "Do you need any help?"
"Yes," the man says. "We're trying to get to the dolphin show."
"We're heading there, too. How about we show you the way?"
"Thanks! We'll come with you, then."
"They want to see the dolphin show too," you say to Madoka as the foreigners follow you. "Do you mind if they tag along?"
"Sure!" Madoka chirps, taking you by the hand as the two of you lead the way. "You're really good at English, Homura-chan. I knew you could read it well for class, but I didn't know you were that good at speaking it."
"I've had a lot of practice." A hundred years of English class, to be sure.
"I wish I were as good as you, Homura-chan. I'm really trying, but our class project has been really hard for me so far, and I feel bad because the other members of my group have been doing so well, too."
"Maybe I could tutor you, if you're still having trouble after we're done with our projects?"
"Would you? Thank you, Homura-chan, I'd really appreciate it."
"Don't those two make a cute couple?" you hear the woman whisper to her male counterpart.
"Yeah, they really are."
You don't let them see, but their words have caused you to become the red cabbage. "Homura-chan, is something wrong?"
"Nothing, it's fine." You hope you won't be this embarrassed come the dolphin show. You'd hate to have your enjoyment ruined because your face can't stop steaming.
Fortunately, the show goes better than you could have anticipated. Even the obnoxious cheering of the foreign tourists does nothing to discourage the enjoyment you feel watching the dolphins perform as their trainer guides them back and forth. In graceful fashion they toss and turn, like ballerinas of the water, cutting a spiral pattern in the water as they go around and around. "You know, I once fought a witch that could make whirlpools like that," you say, motioning to the forming spiral in the center of the pool as the dolphins perform. Madoka clenches her hand tightly against yours, and you add "Don't worry, beating it was easy. All I had to do was freeze it solid, and it shattered."
You hope you won't have to do the same to whatever witch Mikuni Oriko saw appearing here. You'd like to be able to get through this date without any unnecessary interruptions.
The show concludes to a subdued applause from the audience, all save for the foreign tourists whose applause is raucous and thunderous. You can feel everyone else in the audience silently judging them for their impropriety; but Madoka doesn't seem to mind them at all. "That was amazing, Homura-chan!" she chirps, clinging to you tightly as you watch the dolphins splash about at the water's edge, enjoying the treats their handler doles out for them as reward. "They're so cute!"
When Madoka smiles, you can't help but smile back. "Yeah. I've never seen a dolphin show before, but I think I wouldn't mind seeing one again, as long as you're with me." With the show concluded, you lead Madoka out of the showroom, asking her "So, is there more you'd like to see, or do you want to go someplace else?"
"Anywhere's fine by me," Madoka says, taking your hand into hers as you lead her - or rather, as you let her lead you - to the next nearest exhibit. "I'm sure there's a lot of things we can do, and any of them are fine as long as I'm going there with you, Homura-chan."
"Well, maybe we could get a snack and look around a bit more while we mull over what to do next."
