Day 43 Chapter 14
[X] Plan Grandparents Failcess

"Normally it's just kind of annoying when you stop time, but this time was really annoying. My grandparents came over to visit, and they don't know about you, or magic, or any of this stuff, so I couldn't even get out of explaining things if I had moved during that time."

"Your grandparents came over?"
Now, this has you intrigued. "So, how did Archer take meeting his potential in-laws?"

"I guess it didn't go too bad, all things considered,"
Kirika says. "They showed up out of the blue, and when grandpa saw Archer he immediately started laying into him, wanting to know all about him and why he thought he was better than my dad; stuff like that. He handled himself pretty well, but I still think grandpa thinks he's too good to be true."

"Too good to be true,"
you repeat Kirika's words back to her. "Yes, I suppose that would describe Archer adequately. How did your mother handle things?"

"Mom blew up at grandpa a few times when she thought he was being really unfair to Archer with all his questions, but actually, grandpa was okay with that. Usually he's pretty strict with mom, but I guess he was just happy to see her feeling that passionate about something after so long."

"But I imagine they'll still be keeping an eye on the way things progress between Archer and Kure Minako in the future."

"Oh, yeah, for sure. I haven't seen grandma and grandpa in years, but now I'm pretty sure they'll be by a lot more often from now on to check in on things."
If she were by your side right now, you could almost imagine Kirika leaning in to whisper in your ear "Though between you and me, I think grandma's got a big soft spot for Archer since she heard about you."

"Then I suppose I should probably come over the next time they do."

"I know I'm usually busy with schoolwork whenever I have to stay home with mom, but you're always welcome to come over if you ever want to, I dunno, hang out or join us for a family dinner or something. I'd invite Oriko too, but-"
you can almost hear the sound of Kirika's groaning in the distance as she says "-mom would probably say that she's 'distracting me from getting my homework done' or something stupid like that."

"Your mother just wants you to be successful."
You're tempted to end the conversation there, but now you're curious. "So, what kinds of things do you usually do when your grandparents come over to visit?"

"I dunno? It's been a few years since the last time I saw them, mostly 'cause mom's been too busy to have company come over. Mostly we just talked tonight; you know, about how I was doing in school, whether I was eating right and staying healthy, stuff like that. Mom didn't tell them I was a lesbian, so they also had a lot of questions for me about Oriko. They were so surprised; they thought for sure I'd have a cheap, sleazy boyfriend like mom had at my age."

"A boyfriend?"
You try to imagine what sort of boy Kirika's grandparents might have imagined her with, but all your mind is willing to give you is a caricature of Mikuni Oriko with facial hair and a more muscular build. You have to resist the urge to shudder, lest you draw the attention of the female MIkuni Oriko sipping tea and chatting with Tomoe-san who's sitting right next to you. "I'll bet they were in for a shock."

"Actually, once the initial shock wore off, grandma and grandpa were okay with me being a lesbian. At least this way, they'd never have to watch me get pregnant and ruin my life like mom did, is what grandpa said... He's, still pretty upset about the whole thing with my dad."

"If I were your grandfather, I don't imagine I'd ever get over what happened to my daughter, either."
Spurred on by Kirika's talk of her grandparents, you try to remember what little you can about your own grandparents; their names, faces, the sounds of their voices, anything; but nothing comes to you. What were you expecting. You barely remember those things about your parents. Just how long have you been looping for, exactly? "Well, I suppose I'll let you get back to-" You don't actually know what Kirika does when she's at home but done with her homework as, according to her, all her games and movies are over at the Mikuni residence. "-whatever you were doing before I called you."

"Alright,"
Kirika says. "Take care, and remember to tell me all the juicy details from your date with Pinkie tomorrow morning."

"I didn't-"
But it's too late; by the time you've spoken up, Kirika's thoughts have left your mind. Left your mind a right bloody mess, is what they've left. You still haven't satisfactorily gotten back at her for all those things she told you at lunch the other day. You imagine you will never satisfactorily get back at her for that, either.

"Are we boring you, Akemi-san?" Tomoe-san asks as you come back to reality from your extended conversation with Kirika. "Perhaps we should cal it a night, then."

"It's not that," you say. "I was giving Kirika an update on what we've been up to. Though, I do think I'll call it a night, now that you mention it."

"And if you're leaving, Nagatsuki-san and I should probably head out soon as well," adds Mikuni Oriko. "We'll see everyone again tomorrow night."

Home... On one hand, you'll be glad to see how Amy is enjoying her new toys; but on the other hand, there's someone else you're not quite glad to be seeing just yet. "Welcome home, master," Assassin says as you close and lock the door behind you. "Did you have a nice day?"

"I did, thank you," you reply. "Listen, abut this morning, I-"

"You have no need to apologise," Assassin says. "You were merely speaking the truth; it was I who overreacted."

"Still, I'm sorry if what I said offended you in any way. I know we can't have what I have with Archer, but for as long as you're thinking of sticking around I really do want you to enjoy your time here. That's why I said you don't have to call me 'master' if you won't want to; friends shouldn't have to think of their friends in terms of being 'masters'."

"Still, I..." Assassin shakes her head, and says "Never mind; it's nothing. Will we be touching tonight as usual?"

"Yes," you say. "Just let me go get changed and I'll be right in to join you." You make for your room, where you watch as Amy bats around one of her new squeaky toys with her paws as you change out of your regular clothes and into your usual routine wear. "Do you like your new toys?" You crouch down, smiling as you play with Amy for a few moments, before heading out to the living room to join Assassin.

"I'll be practicing my runes tonight and for the rest of the week," you say to Assassin as you sit down beside her. "I'll be busy, but as always you're free to go about your business."

"Of course, master," Assassin replies. The servant of poison lays her hands on you, and your ritual of practicing while Assassin's hands wander continues into another night.

And we're now one day closer to Sunday. The usual end-of-day stuff is welcome, as well as what we're hoping to see from tomorrow morning.

[Infinity+1 -> Infinity*Infinity] Kaname Madoka /s

Really though, there probably isn't going to be much relationship changes until social events like the pre-Walpurgisnacht party comes around, or if Sayaka blows up at Homura. If Kyoko really wants some Homupoints then she could always stage an intervention between Homura and Sayaka, but then again I'm not so sure that's her style (plus she's not overly close to Homura yet to want to help her out personally... I think, could be wrong). Not even Miyuki is getting past a 6 atm due to the fact that her and Homura's relationship is mostly professional for the most part, if positive.

No goal changes either, aside from maybe including one about protecting Minako (and possibly Kirika, though she doesn't really need the protection) in general, like how he has one about protecting Homura.

Morning stuff could include what Homura got from going from moving up a tier in Inguz. Homura could set up a general team training session instead of Witch hunting later in the day (y'know, due to the lack of Witches and all) - probably barring the Servants needed to set up defenses; that way they could test out and refine some of their abilities before Walpurgisnacht (and Miyuki could - possibly with aid - try and further explore her abilities and what she can do with them), and it would be a good opportunity for Homura to test out her new tiers of Projection Magecraft and Inguz. Homura could angst over possibly apologizing to Sayaka/Hitomi on the way to school to make things better, even if she's not 100% certain what she's apologizing for in regard to Sayaka specifically. She could play with Amy for a few minutes or ten with the toys her and Madoka picked out.

I am seriously regretting having gone into Part 3 with no real plan whatsoever. I wish I could have come up with something for us to do besides bumbling around socialing for two weeks.
Hey, surprise events are your friend. It could be anything really, and Homura could opt out of some of them (like if she's asked for help by one of her mundane friends for something social/at school), and you don't really need much set-up if any at all to have them.

I'll PM you some examples in case you want to use any of them, or draw inspiration from any of them, in order to prevent possible spoilers.

I am terrible at the day-to-day stuff. When there's something big that's being built up towards, like Oriko+Kirika needing to be stopped, Elsa Maria and what her cult and familiars are up to, or Jack doing Jack things - which I admit I could have had a better plan for, but we overpowered her by so many magnitudes there wasn't really anything I could have her do to us that would be realistic - I can give us things to do that work towards building up to the big event; but when that big event is a tropical storm that can't be built up to because it isn't here yet and all we're left with is daily domestic stuff, that's where I fall apart.

Thankfully, the sequel is going to have multiple threads for us to chase, and since I'm not forced to tackle a 46+1 day loop I can pace things however I need to to make them interesting. At least I hope that's how it goes.

Don't bother. We've only got three days left. There's not really any time for us to be "doing things."

Day 44 Chapter 1

It's early in the morning when your eyes are forced open by the sound of a buzzing alarm; far too early. Granted, servants such as yourself don't need to sleep the same way humans do, but you've found yourself sliding comfortably into the routine of the mundane during your time in Mitakihara. Loose strands of dark chocolate hair tickle your nose, as the person sleeping next to you lets out a groan as she reaches for her phone, silencing the alarm.

Minako mutters something under her breath as she returns the phone to its place on her nightstand, before rolling her body around to greet you. "Hey there, handsome," she says.

"Good morning to you too," you respond. "Have a nice sleep?"

"All thanks to those wonderful hands of yours."

"Should I get started on breakfast now, or..."

"It's Thursday, silly. I don't have to be at my morning shift today."

"Then it's settled. We'll stay in a little longer."

Getting to wake up beside a beautiful woman like her may have contributed to how comfortably you've slid into the routine of the mundane.

You don't let "a little longer" go on for too long, however, lest Minako try and tempt you with whispers of sweet nothings like "You know, Kirika should still be asleep. If you want..." and for as beautiful a view as the one you're abandoning, you do eventually manage to pull yourself up and out of bed. "Do you at least want to shower together? I promise-" that twinkle in Minako's eyes says you can't trust any promise she makes. "-to keep my hands to myself."

"Sorry," you say. "But I'm very much in the 'ladies first' camp when it comes to showers."

While Minako showers, you get to work on breakfast. Nothing too fancy for this morning; rice served with pickled plums, grilled fish, and miso soup. As you cook, you hear the shuffle of sleepy feet, and the door with the orange signage opens as Kirika greets you with a yawn and a "Morning, Archer," as she takes her seat at the table. "What's for breakfast?"

"Nothing too fancy," you say. "We've got rice, grilled fish, and miso soup."

"Sounds bo~ring," Kirika says. "Come on, make something cool."

"Sorry pumpkin-" Are you calling Kirika by Minako's pet name as a way of mocking her, or because you've genuinely come to care for her? You don't care for her in the same way you care for Homura, but she's someone important to someone who's important to you, so... "-but I'm limited in what I can make by what's in your mom's kitchen; and since she's only just starting out cooking for herself there's not a whole lot in the way of 'cool'. But maybe the next time we go grocery shopping I can show her where all the 'cool' stuff is hiding; how's that?"

Kirika pouts, muttering something about Mikuni's cooking to herself. "Morning, pumpkin," Minako says, kissing her daughter as she emerges from the bathroom. "Why the long face? Didn't sleep well last night?"

"She's pouty because I'm making a, quote 'bo~ring' breakfast, and not something she deems 'cool'," you say. "I'm not sure what would qualify as 'cool' in her book - pancakes, maybe - except it's not like I make pancakes for Homura every morning, either. She gets the same variety of meals that I make for your mother and you."

"What about that really tasty salmon dish you and mom made last week? Can we have that again, if you're gonna make us boring breakfasts?"

"Don't be rude," Minako says to her daughter. "But, ah, I guess I wouldn't mind having that with everyone again. What was it, baked salmon with mushrooms?"

"It'll probably depend on what Homura has planned for her and the other girls tonight, but if she's able to swing by for dinner I might be able to swing something in the way of good salmon."

At breakfast, do you

[X] Plan Has Anyone Realized That Archer Has Two Families, Yet?
-[X] Talk
--[X] to Minako
---[X] about her parents' surprise visit yesterday
----[X] "They really care about you, you know?"
---[X] about escorting her to her workplace today, if she's up for it
--[X] to Kirika
---[X] about whether or not she's made any friends at school (aside from other Puella Magi)
----[X] Speaking of making friends and school, perhaps she should look into joining a club? You hear that Homura quite enjoys the one she's apart of, and she's gotten quite friendly with the other members of the club.
---[X] about places she'd like to go on future family outings (could be a theme park, water park, laser tag, traveling, etc.)
-[X] Hang out at the Kure apartment until Minako has to go to her day shift
--[X] Give Kirika some last minute help before she sets off for school
---[X] When Minako's gone to work, practice Tiwaz, get some groceries for tonight's dinner, and telepathically check in with Homura while informing her about said dinner

-[X] Switch perspectives to Homura
--[X] Cook a simple but delicious breakfast with Assassin; if she doesn't know how to cook whatever it is you're cooking, then teach her how to make it
---[X] If instead Assassin wants to cook something that she's had when she was alive as a change, do that instead; Assassin may need to take the lead in showing you how to cook whatever it is that they're making
--[X] Shoot off a text to everyone in the group chat about possibly having a practice/experimenting session later today
--[X] If you have the time, play with Amy for a few minutes or ten using the toys you and Madoka got

I'm sure that Assassin knows how to cook to some degree, considering she'd have had to sustain herself while she was in deep cover operations for periods of time. It'd be a nice change from the typical Japanese/English breakfasts, anyway. 🤔

Has Anyone Realized That Archer Has Two Families, Yet?
Only because having them all live in the same place would be too space-consuming.
---[X] Accidentally word it in a way that could be misconstrued as something else having to do with "experimentation", much to a certain person's ire; facepalm and apologize when you realize how it sounded
Not unless you have wording you already want us to use, no.

Not unless you have wording you already want us to use, no.
"How about we get together later today to experiment with each other?" Or something like that. Pretty easy to come up with plenty of variations too. Do note that this is coming from a relatively socially inexperienced person right in the morning after they've woken up, mistakes will be made. :V

I'm going to veto it. It just sounds too, I don't know, contrived? You're basically asking me to plan to make a mistake, when mistakes don't work like that.

I imagine poisoning everything you touch makes cooking... difficult. So she probably doesn't know.

[x] enetious
She's immune to her own poison and she can control whether or not her poison is turned off once parted from her body. Why, as an infiltration expert, wouldn't she know how to cook at least to the point of sustaining herself out in the field (or when she had to travel)? :p

Poisoned food isn't gonna taste nice, though. Or is it like arsenic?
she can control whether or not her poison is turned off once parted from her body
At the risk of giving SVS a headache, explain this more to me, because I can only read this as her poison not being an issue, which obviously isn't the case.

The poison is magical in nature, and the poison itself is literally just Serenity's cells. Any food made by her won't taste any different than food made by any other human.

She can selectively choose to allow her cells to remain poisonous away from her body, or she can choose to have them not be poisonous once out of contact of her body. (EDIT: The cells that are still poisonous away from her body have a half-life, and will becoming non-poisonous once some time has passed)

Making a living person (past mere minutes or hours) completely poisonous to that degree isn't possible in the mundane world, WanderingTwix. Blame it on magic. :V

Day 44 Chapter 2
[X] Has Anyone Realised That Archer Has Two Families Yet?

"So... Getting to meet your parents yesterday. That was something."

"Something I wish I could have prepared you for," Minako says. She groans, cradling her head with her left hand, while her right hand pokes at her rice with the chopsticks in their grasp. "I'm sorry for all the trouble my father put you through. If I'd known they were coming over, I'd have tried to prepare you better for meeting them."

"I didn't mind having a more candid meet with them," you say. "They really care about you, you know? If that means being hard on me to make sure I'm the right man for you and Kirika, then that's fine."

"Yeah, but..." Minako sighs, saying "I wish they'd have been this hard on me about Kazuma; but if they'd kept me from ruining my life-" Minako leans over, giving her daughter a kiss as she says "-then I never would have gotten to meet this adorable little pumpkin of mine."

"Sometimes that's just how life turns out." And speaking of Minako's little pumpkin; you direct your attention to Kirika, and ask her "Outside of Homura and Tomoe, have you made any new friends at school lately?"

"What's the point?" Kirika responds. "If I just had Oriko that'd still be enough for me. Homura and Tomoe are okay, 'cause I've also got magical girl business with them, but I don't really feel like I need other friends outside of them. Besides, if I had other friends then I'd have to take time out of being with Oriko to do friend stuff with them."

"Come on," Minako says, smiling as she playfully nudges her daughter. "I know you've got other interests besides Oriko. You used to like to dance when you were younger, and I know you're a pretty good runner; maybe the school has a gymnastics team or a track team you could join?" Minako's nudging travels south, and she pokes Kirika in the stomach twice before adding "They'd both be really good ways to offset all the sugary snacks you eat. I don't even want to know how much more of that stuff you eat at Oriko's place when I'm not looking."

You'll make no mention of how Kirika prefers her tea; overly-sweet and closer to a sugary sludge than a liquid. Instead, what you will say is "Maybe you'll find you enjoy the company of someone other than your girlfriend or your coworkers. I know Homura is enjoying herself with the archery club; maybe if you gave a club or two a chance you'd enjoy it too." Time to go in for the kill. "And, if you were to join a club, especially if it's an athletic one like the ones your mom suggested, then you could have Mikuni come cheer you on during meets. I'm sure she'd love that."

You hear Kirika grumble something non-committal, and suppose you'll hear no more from her than that. Instead, "So, I know it seems like I've been bringing this up a lot lately, but is there anywhere either of you would like to go; for a family outing, I mean. I know it's too early to be thinking of long-term travel plans, but there might be something fun we could all do that would only take an afternoon." It will have to be soon, though; otherwise there might nto be a point in planning for future outings.

"I want to go to the aquarium," Kirika says. "And I want to bring Oriko with me. Homura got to go to the aquarium with her girlfriend, so it's only fair."

"Alright, I'll put us down for a trip to the aquarium," you say. "What about you?" you ask Minako. "Is there anything you'd like to do?"

"I guess just having another family dinner together would be nice," Minako says. "I know Kirika's hoping to have that salmon and mushrooms dish again soon, but maybe there's somewhere we could go out to eat, like that food court with all the special rāmen dishes, or that place at the mall that's supposed to be really fancy." Minako turns to Kirika, saying "Maybe Oriko would like to come with us if that's something we do?" You feel the telltale foot stroking against your leg, and Minako's eyes lock on yours, her gaze sulty as she says "And maybe once we've done something together as a family, this handsome gentleman would take me out and do something with me as a woman."

"Maybe there's a movie playing that all four of us would like to see?" Not likely; there was hardly anything playing in theaters the last time you checked. Maybe there's somewhere that plays older, better movies than what's currently showing, or maybe you could rent a movie that everyone would like, but you doubt there's anything good that would suit the tastes of two teenage girls and two adults.

Minako offers to clean the dishes after breakfast, giving you the opportunity to "Alright, now let's go over the stuff you were having trouble with last night" with Kirika before she has to head off to school. "I think we've got enough time to tackle at least a few problems before you've got to leave."

"Oh, you don't have to do that," Minako says. "I appreciate how much you're willing to help Kirika, but really, you should go and spend some time with your own daughter too." Minako smiles, guiding your hand away from Kirika's school book to say "I can't call myself her mother if I have to rely on you to do everything. Go, spend the rest of the morning with Homura. I'll help Kirika with her schoolwork."

"Are you sure?"

"You already do more to help us both than I could have ever asked you to," Minako says. "Of course I'm sure." She gives you a hug, and a kiss, and leads you to the door, but she doesn't kick you out; not until she's said to you "But I do expect to see you and Homura here for dinner at least one night this week. Okay?"

"Okay." Minako gives you a last hug goodbye - and even Kirika is convinced to give you a hug - before you and the Kures part ways at the closing of their apartment door. "Okay, looks like it's back home for me, then. Guess I'll do the grocery shopping once Homura's left for school... I can probably fit in some time for a bit of practicing, and then..."

You awake with the desire to cook breakfast for yourself and Assassin. You aren't quite sure what you want to make, but after yesterday you are sure that you want to include her more often. A shared exercise in making breakfast seems like a good activity to include Assassin in, and who knows? If you let her take the lead, maybe you'll get to taste something that even Archer hasn't made for you yet.

And speaking of Archer... "I didn't expect to see you this morning," you say to Archer as you see him taking his shoes off at the door. "I thought you'd be spending your morning with the Kures."

"I had planned on staying awhile longer," Archer says. "But Minako insisted I go home and spend the time with you instead."

You allow yourself to melt in Archer's strong embrace; the embrace that first made you comfortable with accepting him as your father. "Well, I'm glad to see you, whatever the reason."

"Now, how about I make you something to eat?"

"Actually, since I wasn't expecting you to come home so soon, I was planning on making something with Assassin."

"Oh?" Hearing you call for her, Assassin pokes her head out of the living room, staring at you and Archer as he says "Well, then I'll be happy to sit back and supervise the two of you. If you need any help, just ask and I'll be more than happy to assist."

"You wished to make breakfast with me?" Assassin asks. "I am flattered, but I am sure any fare I could make would be vastly eclipsed by Archer."

"That's fine," you say. "I'm sure you're not as bad as you think."

While Archer pours out food and water for Amy, you take your place beside Assassin as you ready up for what promises to be an interesting breakfast. "Now, is there anything in particular you'd like to make?"

"From the ingredients Archer most frequently uses, I believe we have the majority of what I will require to make omelettes." Omelettes? That's not exactly what you were expecting to hear be suggested by Assassin. "If you will pardon me for saying so, and not think it distasteful for an Assassin such as myself to say, a good Persian Goje Farangi is simply a breakfast to die for."

In the end Assassin's take on Goje Farangi, or Persian tomato omelette, comes out looking better than you had expected it to when you saw her adding too much in the way of tomatoes to the pan. The orange-tinged but surprisingly tasty-looking omelettes have a distinctly foreign aroma to them, no doubt courtesy of the cumin Assassin was insistent on adding. "In my time, having spices like this were the privilege of the wealthy," she says, as she continues to admire the small glass jar containing the yellow powder. "It is incredible to think that the average citizen can now live as richly as a noble lord from my time." She turns to Archer as you take up the task of plating and serving the three tomato omelettes, and asks him "And you say you bought this at the local bazaar?"

"If you think having a bit of cumin in the cupboard is amazing, you should see the spice section of the grocery store," Archer says. "It would blow you away."

"I imagine it would."

---[X] deeply and sincerely apologizing for telling them what you did about yourself; reiterate that you're willing to do just about anything to obtain their (though mostly Sayaka since Hitomi already kinda forgave you) forgiveness

Even if Homura's apology "fails", better to get a Sayaka outburst than a Sayaka "pretending like she doesn't notice you and you're lower than dirt" reaction. Proper communication is one of the first steps towards resolution, after all.

When? When, between now and Walpol, will we have time to invite Madoka over?

Sayaka: "You apologised yesterday! Do you really think you'll make things better if you just keep apologising every day?"
We didn't really apologise yesterday, but what we did say is probably close enough for her ears.

Just some optimism. After all, Homura's assured herself that she will defeat Walpurgisnacht this time around. She has to.

Hey, Sayaka speaking to Homura at all? I call that a win. :)

Sayaka may be speaking to Homura, but Homura is still the only one who hasn't kissed her girlfriend yet, so what do you call that?

Hey, now; this is a Butcher-inspired quest, optimism isn't allowed here. Save that stuff for the sequel.
