Man, this chapter just punches you in the stomach for an opening, doesn't it? This is supposed to be a tremendous turning point and it absolutely feels like it. Everything in the dialogue between Shinji and Kaworu feels properly momentous. The impact is like a cannonball to the soul. Here's a couple spots that really carried that intensity for me.

For a brief moment he was almost tempted. This world had done nothing but raise his hopes only to dash them, to rub his face in misery and death before taking away the things he loved piece by piece. Still, as he let out a single tired breath, only one word passed his lips.

There was a thunderous crash of shattered glass as Shinji fell from the air to land directly in front of a shocked Kaworu, his fist glowing white hot with anger.

"How?" Kaworu managed to squeak out, the grandeur of his arrogance gone for moment as Shinji closed the distance.

Oh, I'm feeling some strong shounen vibes here but in a good way. The emotion being made physical fits neatly with the interaction and this all feels properly built up, it's justified narratively and thematically.

"I'm.... alive?" the girl blinked, wincing in pain as memories from fighting Asuka flooded her mind. The smoke the heat the hate... the failure... Instinctively Mana looked down to where the Pilot had stabbed her to find everything below her mid section was gone, various machinery and bio organs strewn out on a operating table.

"Oh, you're awake? That's good."

Mana looked over to see not Yamato standing over her but Stern, now clad in a medical apron and thick gloves.

The matter of fact description here makes Mana's state seem even more disturbing, without going into deep detail. And ooh, Stern's up to something!

"At first I was going to. Back when my team first sent back message they had your remains, I thought it would be a nice present for the old man. Maybe help smooth things over. But then..." Stern stopped and turned away from the girl. "When I saw you still held some spark of life inside you... I changed my mind." He turned back and gave a half smile. "I admire your will, your unending refusal to give in and die, no matter the pain."

Interesting. I don't doubt his ulterior motives but is Stern being genuine with his praise? I think that's some neat characterization.

Mana did not care about the big picture, she could not afford to, for the last several years the only way to survive was to focus on the minute by minute, moment by moment consequences. "If can let me kill him, I will help you do anything you want."

Stern smiled wide and grasped her hand in his, squeezing tightly. "That sounds like a deal to me."

Mana's thoughts on focusing minute by minute to survive also ring really true. It's a state of mind I've been in but never with anything as dire as her life.

Looking down, Shinji saw the scar of Kaworu's attack had split his chest open, his blood red core pulsing in the open air, just inches away from Kaworu's waiting hand.

"You are finally awake... good." Kaworu's voice was cold, dry and reserved, the anger and passion from before now quenched.

Interesting little parallel to the Mana section and oooh, this visual! It's amazing and I feel like it could be emblematic of BnB as a whole. It also feels like a clever inversion of that moment canon where Shinji is holding Kaworu in
Unit-01's hand.

Plus... there was a part of him, a part he knew was pride that could not help but think of Kaworu's words about him earlier. If he could do that much on the fly, then maybe.. if he trained... maybe he could win.

Good building on of his tenacity that we've seen earlier. He's moved quickly through despair to righteous and productive anger, hasn't he?

I'm immediately impressed with the organic flow of this chapter. Nothing seems to drag too long and the momentum shifts all feel natural. How hard is it for you to get that down? How much work is to nail the flow of a scene? Is there a mechanic you try to remember or do you find it's more intuitive?

The boy heard the voice of his guardian come from down the hall and blinked, not quite sure what the answer was. Ever since he had gotten home last night and crawled into bed his mind had been a large grey swamp, one thought and worry blending into the next and the next until Shinji could do nothing but let it all collapse on top of him.

Where had he gone wrong? Were there signs that he had missed? Things he could have tried or said?

That's a great visual. "Grey swamp" is really accurate and it's very relatable. The way you had his coherent guilty thoughts build and come forth again felt very natural.
Perhaps it was the frustration of it all, but the words felt sour rather than comforting to the boy. "Are you sure?" He turned and looked at her bitterly, shrugging off her hand. "Because you didn't feel like you needed to tell me about your... condition," Shinji choked out. "Why should I confide in you about my feelings?"

Mari withdrew the hand, Shinji's comments leaving her standing there wilted as he walked away. "I suppose that is fair, just... please be careful Shinji."

Oh man. This is another bit that is great writing and makes sense for Shinji to do or say. But also, damn it, it's painful and it's reminding me of how Asuka's last thing she said to her dad was...yeah. It's painful but it's he excellent cathartic kind of pain.

Shinji saw Kaworu stop talking as his gaze flicked up from the girl, his eyes briefly meeting with Shinji's and going cold.

Without another word Kaworu moved in, placing a hand on Asuka's cheek before surprising her with a sudden kiss. The kiss continued for a moment, Asuka kissing back before breaking off and giving a annoyed huff. "What the hell did you do that for out of the blue, you idiot!?" She punched at his shoulder. "its not exactly private."

KAWORU YOU MOTHERFU-

I wanna know how much of that was him kissing her just to mess with Shinji and how much of it was him wanting to just kiss her. Sorry for not saying that more eloquently.

"Oh these?" Touji pointed at a scar along as neck and gave a cocky grin before smacking his chest with his metal hand. "Just a few bug bites. Nothing I couldn't handle."

Shinji's eyes went wide. "You were in the battle?"

"I sure was," the boy nodded, a confidence oozing out of him, grabbing Shinji around the shoulder and pulling him into a half hug as he led him to the door. "I can tell you all about it if you want." His excited tone implying he would tell Shinji regardless.

Oooh, I love the way you write Touji and Ken
here. It's adorable.

"I just... I like you too, but I am afraid. I don't want to be anyone's backup plan. I don't wanna do something only if its convenient." She shifted in her seat, clearly trying to retain composure.

The words struck Maya. She knew how the girl felt and it hurt her to realize she had been doing that to her. She had only meant to be careful, to play it safe and not hurt anyone, but looking back she realized how much her cost-benefit analysis must have affected her.

Ooh. That's such a raw way to say it. And it seems like an interesting elaboration on the canon's themes about connections between people.
Ooooooh.

"You look even gloomier than usual, and I didn't know that was even possible." The girl inspected him skeptically, before going quiet. "Is this about Mari?"

She's sweet to remember and to care. Just took her a second to recall. At least, that's how I read it.

Rei seemed distant for a moment and stood up. "People do not exist so you are not lonely Shinji Ikari."

The boy tried to muster an answer for that, but as he got up from his seat he saw the girl was already gone.

"Suck it the hell up, Shinji."

I do like how much Rei is growing. Rebecca is really motivating her to be less withdrawn.

"Now, I definitely didn't put you in there..."

Shinji stared at the thing, its glossy black surface looking even stranger in the bright light of the arcade than it did in his bed room.

Very good. You had Shinji reach a low point, making him really want to do SOMETHING.

Feeling a lot about Asuka and Rei here. How much Asuka doesn't know and the way Rei is being more of her own person.

KAWORU YOU MOTHERFU-

I stopped liking Kaworu the moment I read the NGE manga and saw him strangle a kitten. I almost brushed it off but then I remembered that the final rebuild movies revealed the thing about the timeloops meaning all depictions of Kaworu are of the same dude.

Also fun fact I think I figured out the origin of the clock like seventh angel. From the info I posted over at the NGE wiki after long research:

• In Islam there is a class of angel known as Ishim which are described as being half made of fire and half of ice. An especially notable one called Habib (the beloved) reportedly spoke to the prophet Muhammad on his trip through paradise. Their closest analogue in Christian Angelology is the order of Thrones which are said to maintain the balance of the universe and which some equate with the Ophanim aka the burning, living, "wheels within wheels" the prophet Ezekiel saw on God's chariot. Given its design it's possible the seventh Angel drew inspiration from these two kinds of Angels though this remains unconfirmed at this time.

one called Habib (the beloved)
Good catch there, Zrayz10. It brings to mind an Italian playwriting method: Commedia dell'arte

To sort of paraphrase, it draws upon four key character presets: a braggart, a jester-servant, an enamored companion, and a wealthy codger. One interesting thing about this method, it allowed women to play female parts instead of having men crossdress!

Unfortunately I do not remember many classic example of the enamorata trope apart from Shakespearean tragic couples.

Anyway, the name Habib is used throughout history, including Christendom's martyr Habib of Deacon who lived around the first half of the 4th century CE. The Wiki summary on the Habib disambig indicates the word comes from حَبَّ (to love).

Sorry for not saying that more eloquently.
You bring into focus a most evocative time in Shinji's milling about with Kaworu and Asuka. I would have expected either of the other two to give K a swift ass kicking in that instance.

Well I don't want to over correct people and say their interpretations are not valid, but my intentions for Kaworu in that scene were as you said messy. Part of it was him being cruel to Shinji, still feeling rather bitter after Shinji's rejection and their fight and just wanting some way to spite him. Some part of it was Kaworu being annoyed his conversation with Asuka was being spied on so he wanted to annoy their evesdropper. Part of it was obviously just wanting to kiss Asuka even if he would not like to admit it :V. Finally there is an aspect that gets explored a bit more in a conversation Shinji and Kaworu have later (minor spoilers I suppose) Where notes to Shinji he doesnt like the way Shinji treats Asuka so their is a bit of jealousy there.

This is really interesting thank you for the insight, I am perhaps not surprisingly for a westerner but nonetheless unfortunately ignorant of a lot of Islamic culture and tradition.

Ha! well BNB Kaworu does certainly deserve a few of those. In that moment though, Asuka is ignorant of Shinji and Kaworu's grand battle and subsequent deal so her reaction to the kiss was some annoyance at it being so sudden and public but definitely not against kissing him in general. Thoughout a lot of this fic the exact relationship status of the three was ambiguous and nebulous on purpose I wanted them to act more like teenagers awkwardly entering a relationship for the first time, something I think most people have experience with. Their poor communication, sorta cheating sorta not, and general drama is far from ideal but also in my mind fits with the characters.

I disagree but I respect your perspective, different people have different lines in the sand as it were and it would be wrong of me to jump on anyone for theirs. I think the timeloops thing in the final eva movie pointed more to reincarnation with common attributes (Always an Angel always has a strong connection to Shinji) than a single continuous Kaworu entity but the meta physics of Eva is so ambiguous I again can't get upset someone has a different interpretation of things than I do.

The one thing I will say is that I hope Manga Kaworu's actions dont prevent you from engaging with my story and the Kaworu in this story here since they are definitely different people than the other continuities versions.

Also I feel it must be said but if all versions of Kaworu are irredeemable due to ones actions in the manga then all Shinjis would be likewise guilty of his assault regarding Asuka in EOE.

I think once you start going down that path it becomes very murky very fast and no character in Eva has a chance.

It really tracks well with the way you make him very flawed and very human in spite of how he tries to act superior to people. No matter how he acts, the curtain's pulled down and we can see what's really going on in his head. Even when he's being a jerk, that quality makes him strangely endearing.

It's funny. You have to plan out just how messy their relationship is. The drama definitely fits.

Given the original theatrical conclusion for these three teens in EoE, the experimental kissing blended however tangentially with foreknowledge of this untimely demise brings to mind another movie moment, not Romeo and Juliet, rather a South American movie (probably Chilean as it involves the 1973 coup against Allende?).

So anyway, there's a scene between the main char (a foreign exchange student) and two local school kids as they share a can of condensed milk (dulce de leche).*

And wouldn't you know, one of the local kids (M) just outright kisses the other (F) probably to get a rise out of the MC.

However similarly the flaunted kiss does the dynamic between Kaworu and Shinji, I remember the main char in this other film has two chances during the hours of the coup to rescue either familiar face from the firing line. I'll give you a hint, his spineless qualities transcend mere Shinji EoE levels, mirroring a particular American film about Normandy invasion that released a year after Eoe.

*Of course for some perturbing reason a DDG search is having the hardest time pulling up any clips of foreign language films that feature an iconic moment with milk-based consumer products and instead populates the page with videos of women lactating! :o

Well, for what it's worth, before Rebuild made it canon that there is a loop and every version of NGE we have seen is somehow different instances of the loop, the "Super Robot Wars" heavily implied with Kaworu's constant appearances that he somehow had a multiversal connection. So, that version of Kaworu once strangled the kitten out of a misguided feeling of mercy, then in a universe based more closely on the anime the kitten doesn't appears so he has no need to do something that awful and in another universe that follows the manga he decided to do something more humane for the kitten.

And "Campus Apocalypse" went all "the NGE multiverse is part of a World Tree" (the version of Gendo in this manga was even a doppleganger invading from another universe).

Which I guess it's a way of saying "this whole 'alternate universe' stuff is complicated" and/or "it REALLY depends on the writer".

I can put aside my dislike for the sake of a well written fic, plus Kaworu isn't exactly human so an inhuman mindset on that character is expected.

As for Shinji in EOE he's human and lacks multiversal awareness so your version can't be blamed for his other self's actions. Also the kid in EOE was literally in the middle of a mental breakdown after a lifetime of being life's butt monkey. It's even more tragic when you realize that in the manga Shinji lived with Yui's older sister, her husband, and son.

Despite them barely tolerating him to the point they built him a shed to keep him out of the way, and the fact they constantly (and as it turns out justifiably) bad mouthed his dad after Yui's death he still came out somewhat more normal and with somewhat of a backbone to the point he took a swing at his dad after the dummy plug incident.

And unlike his anime version, manga Shinji didn't completely break down and actually managed to protect Asuka from the MP EVAS.

Anime Shinji was instead raised by a teacher of some sort…which raises the disturbing possibility that not just his father but the rest of his family rejected Shinji too in the anime universe.

It is interesting to note

I think it depends more on the timing, what was current during any given Evangelion entry. Campus Apocalypse, which only scratches the surface of multiversal and behaves more like a standalone manga attempting some kind of Hogwarts reskin of friends and foe, has a print date riding shotgun with Rebuilds 1 and 2.

Well, there was this one review that said it looked more like a somewhat-crossover between Persona and NGE, and I for one can't really say it's wrong.

How behind am I on SV? I'm just now catching up to BnB from August. Yeesh.
Climbing up through the network of gray tunnels and brown hallways, jogging up flickering stairwells and riding shaky lifts, Shinji was surprised to feel how quickly he reached the edges of his allowance. His card was failing to open more and more doors as he tried to get to the surface. Eventually, however, he made it, the morning light of the real bright sun making him blink as he crawled out of an emergency access station into what looked like a vacant lot.
Even for NERV, this is just pathetically bad security if Shinji can just walk his way to the outdoors with a partly working keycard. OTOH, if he felt really like 'fuck you, dad!' he could AT-Field SMASH! his way out, so maybe Gendo should be grateful about Shinji doing it this way and showing him the flaws in his physical security at the same time?

It wasn't his world, but it was a world worth existing.
It's the only kind there is, kid. You've got to make it that way yourself. You mother told you that, once.

"If I was an old witch, where would I live?" Shinji chuckled under his breath.
Smash cut to Shinji's grandmother sitting in her mecha-cottage with two giant chicken legs?

Running out the alley, Shinji tumbled into traffic, stepping out just in time to avoid an oncoming bus
And Shinji juuuuuust missed his chance to turn Evangelion into the world's first mecha-isekai! :V

"Yeah, we can't have that can we?" Hikari bristled, picking up his utensils as he grabbed what little he brought and headed for the door. "Touji, please... just don't do anything stupid, okay? You still have a lot of people who care about you."

Touji gave a tired smile and unlocked the door. "You saw my grades, Hikari. Stupid's what I do best."
You're not that bad, Touji. And jeeze, be nicer to your gf. She's putting up with a lot for you, and being as supportive as she can in these weird circumstances. OTOH, if you told her what your dad was doing, and what you're thinking of doing right now, she'd try to stop you. I guess it's a good sign that you and she already know each other so well you can read that on her and are therefore... um... not telling her/lying by omission? Gah. You are stupid.

"And one more thing Shinji." There was a pause. "I love you too, ever since I first saw you on that air strip. There was never any doubt."
Ooof. And this is more than Shinji's gotten from his own parents in... most of his life. Yikes. You think there's a day since he was four that Shinji hasn't deeply questioned if his father ever loved him?

"It did.... It also nearly killed me." Shinji tried to formulate his thoughts in a way that made sense. "Or tried to... eat me? I don't know exactly how to..."

"No power gained, no knowledge learned or skill mastered is without risk Shinji. I would think you would know that more than most," she chided him.
A little warning that your cut-rate One Ring would try to eat his mind and soul would have been fricking nice you old fanatic! He's your own grandchild, and you treat him like a partly-useful dupe and sacrifice!

"And if I died?" Shinji stopped, digging in the heels of his dirty shoes into the polished floor as he looked his grandmother in the eyes. "Or was... swallowed up by it? What then?"

She was less than moved. "Then you would have had more of your father in you than I first approximated." His grandmother gave a cruel smile before tugging on his arm urging him to continue. "Come, life has enough defeats and failures to weep over, do not do the same to your victories."
Oh, fuck you, lady. 'Oh, you'd have been dead, and that would have proved to me you were like that little shit my daughter married.' ? That's the comfort you offer Shinji after you nearly got him killed by not even giving a fuck to warn him? Grandmother of the year. You and Gendo should be locked in a room together for a year.

He could ask his grandmother for help killing him.
Shinji, you don't have to speedrun 'completionist 100% Max Awkward Relationship with Kaworu', you know. And yeesh, what a lovely family if that's the best they can do for each other.

Some were soft and warm and inviting.

"You're just like me..."
;) :D

Some were tragic.

"The color you like, Ikari... like the Second..."

Rei... That Rei's voice was soft and strained as she drifted in her noose.
Ooof. Rei really got the short end of the stick in that one.

"I told you, I am not going to..." Shinji was about to wrench free from his grandmother's grip when he felt something cold and sharp near his neck, a short black blade just above his skin. "What the hell are you doing!?"

"Buying myself a little time." Kunohama grit her teeth as the VTOL above them landed twenty yards away, ripping apart much of the flower garden's with wind as it touched down. A metal door slid open, revealing his father and Rei inside.

"You could have just asked..." Shinji hissed, nearly pricking his skin as he felt the blade against his neck. It was made of that same oily black stone, the substance anathema to him.
And now she takes him hostage, with a weapon that can actually hurt him. Grandmother. Of. The. Year.

He was not there for long, however. His body quickly healed, expelling the bullets and even mending his torn jacket and pants where the bullets punctured. "I hope you know," Shinji climbed to one knee and then the other, taking a deep breath and feeling the last of his injuries heal, "that that really hurt."

"Consider it your spanking for running off again," Gendo snarled, clearly still furious. "Now come on. We have things to do." He turned around and motioned to the helicopter.
"Fuck you too, dad."
And boy, you just murdered his grandmother right in front of him, while she was holding him hostage with a knife to his throat, and now Gendo expects Shinji to just calmly walk away with him for a chat while her body is still twitching next to them? JFC, you are a fucked up piece of work, Gendo.

Asuka shook her head. "Stop trying to save me, Shinji. There is nothing to save... I don't deserve anything better than this..." There was a flash and Shinji saw a memory of Asuka attacking Rebecca in grief and rage. "If I come out I am just going to hurt people."

"I can take getting hurt," Shinji admitted, remembering how he took the attacks from Valkyrie as it ran out of power. "Trust me."

"So this is just about you, then? Just about you coming in like the big hero and saving me?"
Still trying to push him away, because letting him near your heart is too scary, Asuka? Your pride is an inch from killing you, and you'd still do this instead of accept you might need anyone? :(

"Kaworu..."

The name made something in Shinjis chest wrench. "He's an Angel?" Asuka asked.

"Yes." Shinji admitted, knowing this was coming as soon as he opened himself up.

"And you and him..."

"Yes."

"You... you really love him too, don't you?"
"It is really, really, really awkward, alright? There's not enough Facebook in the entire universe for all the 'Its Complicated' we've got going on."

"It should, you were in all the best ones," Asuka said earnestly for the first time in a long time. "Oh and for the record, idiot... I love you too."
Of course she'd say it like this. You little tsundere... :p

"Where..." Shinji blinked looking through the increasing group assembled on the platform next to the Entry Plug. "Where's Mari? I have so much I need to tell her."

At that Maya squeaked and stepped aside to let Misato stand in front. Her face was heavy. "Shinji..." A hand went to his shoulder and squeezed. "You have been gone for a month in there. Doctor Makinami is... she's dead."
Oh dear... there could be worse ways to find this out, but this is pretty close. To learn that not only were you not there, but that you missed it by weeks? And your last conversation was an awkward, strained phone call?
This is going to be somewhat harder for Shinji than even his mother's 'death' was, since he's old enough to understand more about it, know there's not even the ghost of a chance he has to see Yui again, and that he can blame himself for not being there for her.

The door slid open and he saw Asuka sitting at the table waiting for him. Opposite her, Kaworu sat, his eyes blazing like setting suns.

"Come here, Shinji." Asuka beckoned, her voice a forced calm. "We... have a lot to talk about."
Ohhhh boy... Kaworu, you are possibly even worse about letting your pride screw up your conversations with Shinji. Doubly so when you two try talking to each other like people who want to be more than close friends, not 'Angel vs Human Rep' headbutting. I really hope at least one of you has the brains to let Asuka be the bridge between you, since you both admit you love her, and listen to her when she punches you in the head for being a dumbass.

So this just randomly popped up in my email just now and it reminded me about Gendo's uncertainty over bringing back Yui and whether or not he might have feelings for Ritsuko:

r/evangelion - Ritsuko Akagi Cosplay by @puutin_cos
Now maybe it's just me but if I was Gendo and Ritsuko looked like the model here I might not be too quick to pull Yui out of the robot. Just saying.

True, however if you've read or watched Bisuku Dōru's Marin pose as Shizuku-tan or such, there is heavy use of eye tape, studio lighting and smartphone filters. Gendo will see past all that.

I have just registered on this site and here's what I want to say: dear author, you are well done! Such an interesting digression into the personality and history of such characters as Kiel and Kaoru, the prehistory of SEELE, all this noir-spy theme (EVA is generally a klondike for such stories in the spirit of the Cold War), FAR technology and Scrolls... of course the heroes, both canonical)))), and new (Mr. Langley is in my heart, the old woman Black-Ring and Termimana caused invigorating goosebumps). The chemistry between Rebecca x Rei is very sweet, the story of Marie from the manga is skillfully presented, well, what can I say - Shinji with the core of an Angel in his chest, Carl! This work will put me on the pedestal of the best fan fiction on Eve, thank you. (loud, prolonged applause, turning into an ovation).

PS: thanks to you, I've been thinking about my own stories, so deeply buried in the blurred places of the canon, to do things... unusual.

P.S2: Hmm, I wonder what would happen if the Black Moon fell a little to the west? Hmm, and what happens if the scrolls are discovered... two bearded Germans?

thank you so much that means a lot to me, sorry I am not sure what to say I am really touched you like it so much to make an account here.
PS: thanks to you, I've been thinking about my own stories, so deeply buried in the blurred places of the canon, to do things... unusual.
Please do! Its great when people can use established fiction as a spring board for new and interesting ideas or new directions, I am curious what you are thinking of.
P.S2: Hmm, I wonder what would happen if the Black Moon fell a little to the west? Hmm, and what happens if the scrolls are discovered... two bearded Germans?
Forgive me I am not sure what this is a reference to?

Forgive me I am not sure what this is a reference to?

None other than the two who identified as the first bearded commies, Marx and Engels. To be fair, the Three Magi implemented much of their cautions about cheap labor, since they were up against angels. This while keeping bureaucrats on board for cosmetic purposes (owing to what Fuyutsuki tells Ibuki during the tv series).

That's right) Historians-researchers Karl and Friedrich, having found references to a certain Source of Knowledge in ancient alchemical texts, go on an expedition to Asia, from where they return with Scrolls. Since the latter, due to their special measure of reading, but still provide information about the far-advanced civilization, Karl decides to gather a group of his most gifted like-minded people to unravel the secrets of the Scrolls. So, at the First International, a secret section appears - a kind of secret society, with the motto: "Durch den Staub zu den STERNEN!"

Oh man. When I read this chapter, I legit gasped and rocked back and forth a couple times. You gave it that much of a real impact. There's a lot to go over. Even just with the bits I quoted here. I liked all of them and I hope I can convey why I did. Now let's see:

He had even offered a place for Asuka alongside them! What that place would be, he was not sure, but... Shinji clearly cared deeply for the girl and she him, even if they sometimes clashed. As for himself... the Angel swallowed hard, holding a rock in his grip so tight it made his knuckles go white.

Asuka was special, he would admit. More so then almost any other Lilim he had met, the girl had a spark of life inside her, a refusal to submit to the horrors of the world around her, and a fierce spirit that made something in him stir whenever he looked at her.

How dense is Kaworu being? And is it deliberate or is he unaware of the extend of his feelings for her? I'm leaning towards the latter. He's stubborn, not clueless.

"Quack."

Kaworu was brought out of his thoughts by a group of ducklings paddling up to him by the edge of the lake, each of them looking up at him with eager, expectant eyes.

This was really cute, the whole bit with the ducklings. Very nice callback. I'm guessing it came to you very early on?

The first step was the hardest, as is usually the case.

When sprawling through the infinite and unknowable the most difficult and important thing is to create a foothold. To establish clearly in your mind... or what you think is your mind what... here is. To draw a line in the endless sand between you and everything else, marking your place amongst the swirling aether. Once Shinji did that, the rest came simply, constructing a body for himself out of his own memories and feelings.

Oh, a perspective change, sort of? From a closer third person multiple to a sort of detached omniscient third person. I was a bit surprised by it at first, but then I thought on it and it worked. Since Shinji is in a whole other state of existence, a different form of consciousness, it's quite fitting. Like we're seeing the vastness outside of him before he re-orients.

"Memories are like sub atomic particles; they cannot be observed without changing their state. Each time you look into your past it changes to suit your vision."

Damn, that's really evocative. Very good job making that line sound cool and fitting to the story's tone.

"I fear that if I took the time to explain the specifics and the intricacies of all of this then you will miss what is truly important." The image of Yui bowed her head for a moment. "Just try to stay calm know you are on the right path."

Shinji sighed in frustration. Just once he wished he could get a simple answer out of anyone. Still, he knew he had no room to argue, and so stayed back, watching his mother's figure swish back to her desk as she powered down the machine and headed towards the door silently calling Shinji to follow behind.

Sorry, Shinji, you can't just skip through a dialogue tree. You're in this for the long haul.

Shinji stared at the girl. Mari was... well she was definitely still Mari, but it shocked Shinji to see how different she was from the woman who raised him. Not just in looks, though he did admit seeing her dolled up in so much cutesy clothes and make up did startle him. No, it was the demeanour, the quite clinging desperation on the edges of her as she kept the hug a little too long, stood a little too close and fidgeted with her hands a little too much.

That is so brilliantly sad. It's the sort of brief description that conveys years of sorrow.

'Grandmother.' The voice was softer then the last time Shinji had heard it, but there was no mistaking who it was. 'You sound just like Kaworu, too,' Shinji noted as his anger rose in his throat while he listened. 'You are all the same.'

Sharp and poisonous words that can only come from someone stabbed and poisoned.

Even in the in the shrouded darkness Shinji could see his grandmother sneer. "Yes, I am sure that is why he and his pack of thugs stole televisions, ran drugs, and got into bar fights. They were all just hungry and misunderstood. Is that the kind of man you want at your side?"

How very Republican of you, Kodama. I do enjoy the glimpses at Gendo's backstory though. It doesn't make him totally sympathetic but I like the way he had to persevere and how it shaped him.

Shinji wish he could press pause on whatever ghost alien fever dream this was and get some time to think. 'Forged through their gifts?' Was his mother a clone? An experiment? Just how much stuff did Kiel have stashed away?

"What is the point of any of this!?" he yelled at the pair of them, frustrated at the lack of progress. "The world is fucked up, the people running it are evil, and I don't understand any of it! I know that already! What am I supposed to do about it?"

Shinji has had ENOUGH of the weird plot twists already!

His mother... or what he thought was his mother got up, her face twisting into something made of glaring eyes and sharp teeth. "You aren't going anywhere, not until you learn your place in all of this." Her hand reached out, clamping down on Shinji's throat and making him gasp for air. "Now be silent... children are best seen and not heard."

Love the creepiness here. I can envision the sudden switch on her face and body language. This is the sort of thing that would have really trippy animation accompany it.

"So what if he did!?" Asuka yelled at no one in particular, the hot water of the shower running down her face. "If he wanted me then he could have said, he could have tried, he could have risked something!" She whipped out a hand splashing dry segments of tile and plaster with her movement. "Let him suffer just a little bit, let him have a taste of losing something for just a minute, let him want something for a minute before its handed to him on a fucking platter!" She clenched a wet fist, feeling her nails dig into her palm until it bit red.

"All you know how to do is hurt people..."

Good call emphasizing the physical sensations, the touch of heat and moisture. It makes things more vivid and more visceral.

Mari picked up Shinji's other arm and recoiled at what she saw, her eyes going wide as she identified the familiar black sheen of the ring on his finger.

"Get Shinji in the back of the car now! We can't do anything for him here!" she yelled behind her at the mass of suits and guns, trying to sound in charge. "Put on some gloves first, and one of you tell Akagi to prep the med bay, we are coming in hot!"

"Yui..."
[/QUOTE

Oooooh. Ooooh. This makes me wonder so much. Just how much does Mari know? How much did Yui tell her? Does she feel betrayed by Yui in this moment or will she once Shinji tells her?

"And Shinji?" It was Rei who spoke up, her voice so seldom heard it almost shocked one to hear.

"Hey... you okay?" He tried to keep his voice even and repress any hint of his growing fear but he was not sure how well he was managing it "Earlier, you seemed kinda..."

"I'm fine. Just focus on the mission, Nagisa."

Love the role reversal with everyone here. You know something's very wrong and about to get worse, just from how off the pilots are being.

As the wall got closer to the edge of the city it began to dissipate, slowly showing off more and more of the Angel as it emerged from the mist, a burning mass of hate and fury. Above the waist it seemed almost humanoid, two arms attached to a burnt black chest and a head between it's shoulders that looked like a skull dripping with molten gold.

Badass. I wanna know more about the design for this one. Where'd you get the idea?

Fear.

Rei felt strange as she realized what it was, the cold and unpleasant feeling that crept up her spine like a needle.

It was not something she was used to. For most of her life (what could be called her life) the only thing that held any importance was the Commander and his plans. Everything else, even her own well being, came a distant second.

It's so understated. I mean, it makes sense. She's new to the feeling so yeah, can't really freak out.

"Young Katsuragi is right over here, Ma'am." he motioned to one of the rooms on the far end.

'Misato?' Shinji blinked, 'what the hell was Misato doing here?' From bits and pieces Shinji had heard from Mari he knew Misato had lost family in Second Impact but he never thought...

Oh, this part got me feeling the pain and wincing in real life. It's a good place to put the memory too, it stacks up well with Shinji's existing angst.

"I just don't know..." Shinji closed and opened his palms, feeling a strange scratching heat in his right hand building in intensity slowly from mild irritation to searing pain. "Aaah, dammit.." He looked up to the Yui figure. "What are you doing to me now?"

To his surprise the wraith looked shocked, desperately looking around for something to do. "No... I thought I had more time! There was so much more you had to see!"

Don't let him go, Yui! He'll wake up on a prisoner cart to Helgen!

Spying the dark cavern of a launch elevator behind the Angel, Asuka felt a surge beneath her feet, and rushed forward, screaming as hard as she could as she tackled into the monster and sending it and her tumbling over the precipice and down into the depths of the Geofront below.

Absolutely cataclysmic action here. It's action you can see with intense pounding music and dramatic slow motion.

The last of her strength about to leave it, the Evangelion known as Unit-02 caved in the skull of the Angel and then the Core beneath it. The last thing the Pilot inside saw was the dim light flickering down from the surface like a distant star, a world she would could go to.

Oh, this reminds me of "Fly Me to the Moon." Was that deliberate or just a neat connection by coincidence?

The Evangelion looked to be transforming, chunks of armor and the skin beneath it molting off, while new growths and features began to poke out from under the old. It was... strange to look at. Evangelions were always vaguely humanoid shaped things, even more so under the layers of heavy armour and electronic circuitry but what Shinji saw Unit-02 mutating and changing into was downright human, recognizably feminine even.

Damn it. That's another iconic image for the fic. It needs some kind of fanart in time.

"Hello, Mama... it's been a long time."

Sledgehammer to the heart with that final line.

Alright, now the immediate thing I saw here was the emotional adrenaline that Shinji's experiencing and the rapid succession of iconic Mana and Stern moments. Here's the bits I especially noticed and enjoyed.

"Right." Shinji cut her off, tasting the edges of another lie and finding it sour. "And what about Unit-01? You said it sustained massive damage earlier, but I don't know what exactly that means or what the timescale is for..."

"As I said... a lot in the air." Maya frowned, clearly seeing what she was saying was not helping.

"Is there anything you do know?" Shinji snarled at the woman as he felt his frustration turn to anger, making her step back with a squeak.

"You seem pretty demanding for a dork who ran away from the fight where all this happened!"

Reading this, the escalation is like a steam whistle. It grows smoothly without an abrupt shift to my eyes.

Shinji shifted in his seat, not happy about the implication of the comparison. "I am sorry I am not as smart as you or dad..."

Mari sighed and shook her head again. "Trust me, you make up for it by being a decent human being."

Why is the most beautiful praise for Shinji comes out in the worst circumstances?

"He is a miserable old coward. He hates himself and has decided... consciously or unconsciously, to take it out on everyone else. In a better world he would have crawled into a hole of his own self loathing and died long ago, but... in an act of tragic and terrible fate he managed to find something beyond himself and leveraged that to become more then he ever should have been."

Love the transition from one scene or another you did with this quote. It makes me aware of what's similar and different between Shinji and Mana in a way that is not heavy-handed.

Mana Kirishima... his finest work. He looked down at her naked form, taking it in as he tried to remember exactly how she looked the last time he had seen her, searching every inch of her he could see for signs of difference but finding none. Stern has done an exceptional job, at least on the surface... gods know what he's done to your inner workings... But I will find out.

God, this is such a creepy thought from him. It makes sens that it's creepy but I wonder on how many levels is Yamato messed up in his relationship with Mana.

The Captain shrugged. "As head of Tactical, you are as of this moment my only pilot, Kaworu. I need to make sure you are stable and well enough if an Angel decides to attack tomorrow. Personally, though... I know what its like to be alone and I wanted to help... just a little bit." She looked down at her phone again. "Sorry, but I really have to go. If you have to stay the night, let a nurse know and someone will swing by and take Ptolemy."

Oh, that's sweet. These two were overdue for a moment.

"Misato Katsuragi..." Kaworu let the name hang in the air. "What a life tossed on the waves of fate."

You care, Kaworu. She has gotten to you. You care!

"Such a pity I only have you... There were so many other builds I wanted to try... but only you held on." A quiet smile crept onto the man's features as he dragged one finger down the girl's pale arm. "Only you had that special spark. That little fire in you that refused to-"

Yamato's eyes went wide as the girl came to life, her arm swinging out in a flash, colliding with his neck like a metal club and sending him sprawling to the floor.

And boom. The action - it's very well-coordinated and the sensation of touch being emphasized is a nice choice.

The girl did not respond to his words, simply grabbing one of the heavy drills from above and turning it on with a quiet hum. "Kieta Asari, Musashi Lee Strasberg,..." For a split second the girl stopped and closed her eyes, taking a breath to steady herself before bringing the drill down on Yamato. "And my name is Mana Kirishima."

I said before there's some iconic scenes in this chapter and this one? It is extremely so. There's memorable action and it has a serious turning point for her character as a foundation.

Rei turned and saw herself, or at least a younger version of herself in a red and pink dress, dark blue and purple bruises covering her neck.

Yui shrugged at the little girl, unmoved by the seething hatred and contempt that shone through her eyes "And yet here I am. And here I will remain until the plan is completed."

"You do not speak for us. You are not our will."

Cryptic and momentous. I admire the surreal aspect and I want to know where you were inspired for this.
Very surreal ima
"Shinji... I need to help Shinji." Rei rolled off her back and onto her knees to stare at the moon lit reflection of the three in the ice. In Yui's shadow was a great golem, a titan made of dark flesh and metal blades. While under the little girl lay a writhing and pulsing mass, shifting and pulsing with a thousand eyes and a million fangs.

"Expunge the white moon."

"Protect my family."

This also feels like it'd be an iconic visual in a TV or film version of BnB.

"Is he dead?"

Stern's voice was cold and dispassionate as it echoed inside Mana's head. The question carried no more judgment or weight then his when he asked if she wanted coffee.

Mana looked over her shoulder at the body of Yamato Ishida, and everything his drill had done "Very," was Mana's only response.

This brief exchanges carries so much characterization, even on its own.

It was strange. It almost looked like Asuka, in the right light and at the right angle. A womanly figure in swept-winged armour, dazzled with runes and marks. What was that Maya called it? A mental afterimage? If that that was true, then... Shinji was not sure what it said about Asuka thought of herself.

What was more disturbing to Shinji than the golem was the boy serenading it. High above, in the patchwork of ladders and gangways, stood Kaworu Nagisa, violin at his chin as he played his weeping song to the resting giant.

Again, this visual is amazing. You gotta tell me what inspired you.

"Don't move! What happened to Doctor Yamato?"

The smallest possible smile crept up on the girl's face as she took a moment to think, responding coldly. "What he deserved."

What a chapter ending.

Hey. I don't mean to be rude, I was just wondering how everything with the new chapter was going. Seems like it's gonna be a long one, and I'm excited to see what else is in store.

Probably not sorry. The truth is I have lost a lot of interest and passion for Evangelion for a number of reasons (Mostly the negative reaction to the last movie, the homophobia of a lot of the fanbase, general attitudes I keep seeing etc) combined with writing for whatever reason being far less enjoyable of a hobby for me these days. I honestly dont know what to do at this point, its such a big thing that has taken so much of my life doing with it currently being about 90 percent done but I just dont know how to bring it home. (on a literal level I know exactly what is going to happen, I have extensive notes and planned this out long ago I just cant seem to bring pen to paper.)

Part of it probably stems as some of you can tell, from a problem I ran into in the last chapter or so. The plot points of Shinji and Asuka returning to the real world, Mari dying an Shinji dealing with her loss and Asuka breaking the stalemate of Shinji and Kaworu with him rejecting his messianic upbringing and trying to form a new identity... these are all good things IMO and were plot points I planned to have since the begining or near the beginning, the issue is that the way they came out in the story was a bit too rushed and crammed together leaving me in a very difficult position of picking up a tonal and emotional trainwreck of three very separate yet connected plot theads and progressing all of them in a satisfactory way. I wrote most of a first draft of the next chapter, scraped it, redid it scrapped it redid it, then abandoned it to do a side story with Touji meant to reinforce the themes of the story but repeatedly running head first into a brick wall.
