  • [X] Do the following in the middle of the Snare under full divination blockers.
-[X] Beforehand, cast Augury to determine whether or not the priest will answer our call in the first place.
--[X] If he refuses our call, decide whether or not to approach the temple of Meraxes to resurrect him.
-[X] If he will answer the call, resurrect him and immediately make him fall asleep before he realizes where he is and root through his mind for the following:
--[X] What devils or other supernatural factions is he aware of (including Sons of the Harpy and the Cult of the Lady of Spears)?
--[X] What important assets is he aware of, like the Apostate Devil who slew him?
--[X] What active and dormant plans of the enemy is he aware of?
--[X] What locations of interest, safehouses, headquarters, etc of the enemy is he aware of and where are they?
--[X] The Unsullied are being enhanced somewhere. Where is that happening?
--[X] The names of all of his contacts, subordinates, etc.
---[X] All their operations and plans in Slaver's Bay.
--[X] Every bit of dirt he has on everyone in the region (could prove useful).
--[X] If he has any other bit of useful information, now's the time to spill.
--[X] Only if we're sure Jaelar himself isn't compromised will we wake him up. Otherwise he gets bottled.

Interlude DCCCLXXV: Burnt Offerings
Burnt Offerings

Twentieth Day of the Second Month 294 AC

Ceria looked down at the scroll with its gilded Valyrian lettering dubiously. This had not been a power she had ever wished for. There were precious few she would wish returned to life if they had crossed the veil, and even then she would rather forestall death than turn it back. "Why me?" she asked the Lord Justice plainly. He had the authority to ask it of her of course, but despite his foreboding reputation he had never been one to grow angry at sensible questions.

"Wisdom Melisandre and I both have certain affinities of mind and magic that from the limited perceptions of a spirit already past the veil might seem akin to those who serve Baator," he replied. "By contrast yours is near the opposite." There was no need to explain further, spells that detected general temperament were among the simplest to cast and ultimately among the least reliable divinations.

Still, Ceria hesitated. There was something undeniably presumptuous about the deed that ached at the back of her mind. Are those my thoughts, or an echo of Elenei's who chose to die a mortal death? With that thought her resolve hardened and she grasped the scroll, though before turning to the dead man now washed and dressed by the keep's lar spirit she added. "It's safe to being him back in all regards?"

"Safe to ask him questions, his body was already in the possession of devils, not safe to tell him anything," the Lord Justice answered.

"Bet he'll love that," Ceria shook her head doubtfully.

"I imagine he will appreciate being restored to the lands of the living," the magelord replied and to that Ceria had to agree, though his next words sent a chill down her spine. "He will not be in any position to refuse."

The letters burned gold upon the parchment and lights from distant realms descended as the scroll caught fire in her hands and fell to fine ash. The dead man's eyes snapped open and lingered a moment on Ceria in shock before the Lord Justice hissed a single word in the tongue of dragons that seemed almost too heavy for the air to bear. The man's eyes fluttered closed.

Lost 1,000 IM (Raise Dead Scroll)

For a long moment the ancient dragon lord's gaze remained fixed upon the newly risen priest before rising abruptly from his seat. "An ill moment to be rushed, but it seems Meraxes' cult in Astapor may be in danger of outright collapse, that is why he took the chance to at least try to infiltrate their temple. He does not know much more than us with regards to devil sworn Houses, though we can add a couple to our list, Gaza and Neuqk."

"The ones involved in the slave raids against the Lhazareen?" Ceria asked. "We had tentatively identified those as aligned with the Sons of the Harpy. How good is his information?"

"First hand and the memory does not seem tampered, the heads of both Houses making an infernal sacrifice just when Jaelar thought he had persuaded them to at least remain friendly with the cult of the Watcher. What troubles me more is what he heard as he fled, the roar of flames and chants akin to what was reported at the burned temple in Yunkai." The Lord Justice spoke slowly, not wishing to rush into conclusions. "I suspect there is yet another fiend mightier than even the one Wisdom Denys and Ser Criston faced, and that being is too powerful to stride lightly upon the face of the world and so it is briefly summoned to shore up Baator's position."

"So do we act against the collaborators then?" Ceria asked, trying to fit all the pieces together "The devils will be watching the Plaza of Punishment closely after what happened today."

What do your agents decide?

[] Continue seeking the entrance to the temple, cutting off the supply of enhanced Unsullied is key

[] Strike at the known collaborating Houses, they are likely to be more lightly defended and know more of the enemy

[] Try to salvage something of Jaelar's cult and and fold it into the Inquisition's network of informers

Here's an edited version of the chapter, @DragonParadox.

OOC: Three updates again today but without writing really late. Let me know what you think about the character writing in this guys. Not yet edited.
Finally got a spare minute, besides the fact that you have been focusing rather heavily on the Misfits (which is fun!) you have been spending time each update outlining their thoughts, feelings and misgivings on their current situation.

Good practice, and neither Mel or Malarys are totally left on the wings in regards to their own motives, though their perspective does of course get parsed through the lens of people in a power imbalanced relationship, so it can skew their preconceptions quite a bit. This is a feature, not a bug.

Keep it up!

I think if we go after the informants, we are going to get an opportunity to capture some devils. So that's where I'd be going.

[X] Try to salvage something of Jaelar's cult and and fold it into the inquisition's network of informers

@Goldfish
Maybe add the Forge-order to this vote since you're the one doing it anyway? :V

Dany learns a new feat this level up, but I'm having a hard time deciding on what that should be.

Was thinking maybe Residual Magic because of this effect: Lingering Metamagic: If you cast a spell affected by one or more metamagic feats, and then cast the same spell in the next round, you can apply any one of the metamagic effects from the first casting to the second casting, but without any change to the spell's level. The second spell doesn't count as being affected by a metamagic feat for the purpose of this benefit (that is, it doesn't entitle you to apply the metamagic feat to a spell you might cast in the following round).

EDIT: Dazing Spell could be interesting, too. If she cast a Dazing Stormrage spell, for the next minute per caster level she would be able to shoot Lightning Bolts which required a DC 27 Will save to avoid being Dazed for eight rounds. It could be applied to other spells, too.

We should start adding stuff to make low level divination less effective. We tend to treat it as everything or nothing, but making it hard to use low level spells means the effective cost of using any sort of divination increases. Items of False Future for inquisitors would be a great place to start, with Hide the Path enchantments for various facilities where we think we can get away with it.

This feels simultaneously like cheese, and like something only galaxy-brains like you could hope to plan around in combat with.
...not to imply anyone but you have been doing it, but, you know, it still reads as pretty unstraightforward to me.

What are the other choices?

Also, Forge. Order. Reee.

Personally I think Residual Magic is quite a bit more useful for Daenerys than Dazing Spell. Though of course by the same token we really need to stock up on the corresponding scrolls.
