Lurking Madness
Twenty Seventh Day of the First Month 294 AC
You are in the gardens enjoying a rare sunny day in the godswood with Dany and Lya, joined also by Vee and her snake sunning himself, when Lady Saenena Caleris finds you. You can tell something is amiss at once from the manner of her walk under the green arches. It is always purposeful, but the only time you have seen it be so urgent was in the midst of battle.
"Excellency," she bows swiftly, too distracted to remember the Westerosi styling. "I believe Urak may be compromised by the influence of the Far Realm."
The sun suddenly does not seem so bright nor the flowers so fragrant. "How?" Your mind whirling with possibilities you ask the next question in a rush, already considering spells to bind the enormous many-headed flesh-smith. "Does he require containment?"
"Already done," the sorceress sighs. "I have made use of the Forge's defenders and my own magic to contain them, though not without loss of servitors. My own wishcraft was unfortunately unequal to the task of restoring his mind."
Lost 2 Slayer and 3 Warden Seekers.
"Alright then, what the Hells happened?" Vee asks, jumping off the bench as Lya sets privacy wards. To your surprise the sorceress does not seem to take offense at the tone, not even veiled. She seems to have gotten used to Vee.
"Studies had been going well, looking back perhaps
too well. Everything made sense, all the analyses obtained positive results at the second or third attempt. We seemed to be on track to finishing this month, which none of us had expected to. The Far Realm is by definition inscrutable, but the memories of the old smiths seemed invaluable, always the right answer at the right time. If I had not returned unexpectedly from my duties with the dragons perhaps I would not even have caught it. Urak was trying to isolate a section of the Forge from the influence of the Green Ones... the Old Gods of the Sunset Lands. They tried to explain themselves as not wishing the spirits to be enraged by the use of Far Realm magics, but that was obvious nonsense given the old man's...
private studies. There were seals of calling and conjuration among the binding ones."
"They were trying to corrupt the Forge?" you ask horrified. The sheer damage that might cause is... almost inestimable, though given the means it would likely not play out as in the worst possible scenario. Most likely it would have merely lead to psions loyal to the Deep Ones, unknowing even to themselves until the moment of betrayal.
"That is my estimation. I do not know if the taint originated in one of the study materials or if it was intrinsic to one of the minds that became Urak and escaped the gaze of the Serpent God."
"I would wager the former over the latte," Lya interjects at once. "Being swallowed by a god and remade... well, they would be able to envelop the whole of your soul."
"Tiamat swallowed me," Dany points out softly.
"And she knew you meant to betray her, she just didn't care because she was an arrogant bitch," you interject, doing your best to hide your wince at the reminder of what your sister had been through. "The question is where do we go from here, is there any part of this month's studies that you would vouch for as untainted?" you ask the sorceress.
"None, everything was collaborative," she replies, frustration coloring her words. "I would suggest questioning Urak in the confines of the Snare and myself for good measure."
"That's..." to be honest you are both surprised and touched by the show of trust. You had not been sure how to approach the possibility that she may have been unduly influenced to the proud mage. "Thank you, my lady."
"It is
I who would be thanking you once I have the surety that my mind is wholly my own," she counters before handing you a bottle filed with swirling dark red smoke that almost gives the impression of a many headed serpent.

How do you investigate the potential breach of security by Far Realm elements?

OOC: So yeah, remember those background rolls? This is what a catastrophic compounding failure looks like saved at the last moment in outright combat.
