Interlude DCCXXIV: Common Ground
Common Ground

Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

Yin, Golden Empire of Yi Ti

Valaena read the coded note a second time carefully. Her first reaction had been disappointment that she had not been named among those taking the fight to the Golden Company's spies and their Oni allies. Dawnfyre could use a challenge he could sink his claws into, for that matter so could she. Her second reaction had been a hollow sort of lurch in her stomach. How the Hells do we explain all this? A Demon, a Devil, and an Asura. It took the young mage a moment to even recall what an Asura was. A living blasphemy against all gods that took pleasure in casting down their servants and defiling their altars. Well at least she would get along nicely with Glyra, even if the Fey were not usually so active in their dislike of gods. She swallowed an inappropriate laugh tickling the back of her throat.

"Any ideas how we are going to sell this?" Diana asked the room at large, her gaze moving from face to face... to the Herald's fearsome steel visage. It did not usually offer much in the way of creative thought, but its vast store of knowledge and peculiarly detached perspective had aided in negotiations before.

"Enemy of my enemy?" Theon half-asked. "The Bitch Queen isn't the worst thing out there, but there's certainly cause to gather unlikely allies against her..."

"I don't see why we can't be honest about it," Asha said in a studiously serious tone that was practically a guarantee she was japing. "Our King just likes to collect weird shit."

Though she snorted in amusement at the jest, Valaena shook her head at Theon's suggestion. "We do not want the Emerald Magistrates and Shugenja worrying if they are going to be betrayed in some way subtle or overt in the middle of battle, and we certainly do not want to give the impression that the King makes alliances of convenience with Fiends lightly. Given their thoughts on blood magic I do not think we should add one more reason to be suspicious."

The image of a young woman throwing rice and bone ash in her face to ward off supposed possessing spirits was still too fresh in her mind, not least because she had to spend the rest of the day convincing their escort of imperial guards not to execute the poor woman for 'causing such loss of face to the honored envoy'. The superstition was certainly common enough, but the Inquisitors had agreed that the whole charade had been staged with her 'attacker' being nothing more than the final unwitting pawn. Striking the right balance between mercy and avoiding the appearance of weakness had been hard, and it might well have been impossible if it had not been delivered through the Herald's booming steel voice.

"The world is greedy..." Diana mused, her expression momentarily very like her 'mother'. "Yi Tish texts mention time and again that mortality infects spirits, be they infernal or sublime. That is why the God-On-Earth was on earth and not in the heavens with his divine parents. So we expand on this right, say the King has found a way to harness this property with relic and ritual, to make deathless spirits part of this world while also securing their fealty. It's perfectly true after all, just a little neater than the full truth. After all, I do not think the King is planning to send any of these Fiends back to their respective realms."

"Why would that make any difference when we're still using Fiends to fight our wars?" Asha asked doubtfully.

"Cultural context, they are more likely to trust something from their own holy lore than foreign and probably bloody magics," Diana explained. "Entertaining as it is to present too many new and interesting concepts to these lands we are guests here and it behooves us to speak the local language more than just literally."

"I hope the translation doesn't get tangled, then," Theon said, miming a toast with his wine goblet.

OOC: A small spinet from Yi Ti in light of what you guys decided to send there as well as some background on what has been going on there these last two weeks.

Trying to get them all without exception is indeed bad, but grouping everyone into one big murderblob is also rather suboptimal.
Suggestions (can't write real plan right now for IRL reasons) :
  • Make three big-ish groups, each going on their own target. They have 7 real PCs and a pile of muscle as support, so could make 3 groups : one led by Zherys and Bloom, Saenena and Anu, Benerro and Wyla and Garin. Main targets are IMO the Temple of Tiamat, the Arcane Labs, and the Rat's Maze.
  • Make sure they can all communicate (ideally a Telepathic Bond, but Sending Stones will do) so that they can send a few Teleporters as reinforcements to each other as needed.
  • Focus on killing people, not loot or places

Pay no attention to the Devils, Demons, and Asura behind the curtain!

Good solution from Diana, though. It could work.

That group could pull off two fights, with split forces, at best, which would allow them to tackle the Temple and the Undead at the same time. That's with a safety net.

There would be no safety net trying to split three directions. Bad habit.

I'm against splitting the fortress party if at all possible. There are an unknown number of Shadow Dragons in play, an army of the Undead, a not insignificant number of mortal troops, the possibility of other Dragons, and enemy spellcasters in it or nearby.

In confined spaces, like the fortress's corridors, our people are limited in mobility and spell options, and would also have to contend with traps, wards, and other obstacles. With one Rogue and the only dedicated melee coming from Undead, they're not set up to be split into balanced parties.

The intent was to murder everything they came across, as quickly and efficiently as possible, while taking as few casualties as could be managed.

there are three other shadow dragons besides the older one who's a mature adult. All three are adults.
That brings the total up to one Mature Adult and three Adult Shadow Dragons, and two Mature Adult Nightmare Dragons, I think?

It really says something about the surviving Dragon population across the Planes that Tiamat's most powerful Dragon servants are the more esoteric breeds rather than her preferred Chromatics.

Almost. The Nightmare Dragons are Ancient.

Mature Adult Shadow Dragon -- Female Mature Adult Shadow Dragon revealed to be in collusion with Tiamat agents on the Sixteenth Day of the First Month 293 AC. On the Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC it was discovered that she may be one among many Shadow Dragons in collusion with Tiamat and the Golden Company.

Ancient Nightmare Dragon #1 -- Revealed to be guarding the Dreams of Aegon Blackfyre alongside its fellow Ancient Nightmare Dragon on the Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC. Apparently a trap specifically set for Daenerys if she ever reached out to the Blackfyre.

Ancient Nightmare Dragon #2 -- Revealed to be guarding the Dreams of Aegon Blackfyre alongside its fellow Ancient Nightmare Dragon on the Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC. Apparently a trap specifically set for Daenerys if she ever reached out to the Blackfyre.

Adult Shadow Dragon #1 -- Revealed to be guarding the Shadow Fortress of the Golden Company on the Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC.

Adult Shadow Dragon #2 -- Revealed to be guarding the Shadow Fortress of the Golden Company on the Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC.

Adult Shadow Dragon #3 -- Revealed to be guarding the Shadow Fortress of the Golden Company on the Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC.

Lizzirth (Very Young Red Dragon) -- Discovered to exist during the interrogation of two Essarian Tiamat Clerics on the Nineteenth Day of the First Month 293 AC after the Golden Company hatched four Valyrian Dragon Eggs in to Red Dragon Wyrmlings with a permanent Mind Blank blessing from Tiamat which would stay with them until they are Young, intel of her plucked from Varys' mind during Bloodraven's interrogation on the Thirteenth Day of the Eighth Month 293 AC which places her in Illyrio's company.

I know it would be pure self-indulgence, but I would really like to see 91 Huge-sized Minotaurs stampede through the Golden Company.

I'm also looking forward to the rumors this operation will spawn. This is anything but a quiet mission, especially since the Golden Company have been responsible for the deaths of thousands if not tens of thousands of people east of the Bone Mountains. The death throes of this organization will be something that basically everyone will be paying close attention to.

I'm late for the buff and spell selection vote, but I figure I should post the stuff I was collecting anyway, in case it becomes useful later.
Kiss of Draconic Defiance
Hide from Dragons
Anti dragon Aura
Draconic Suppression

I also just found Magic of the Dragonheart, which should be great for Viserys next time we have to do something like this, since it lasts 1 hour/level and buffs draconic feats.
Magic of the Dragonheart is one of Viserys' spells which he keeps active at all times.

Magic of the Dragonheart is a spell we've had for years now.

Hide from Dragons looks singularly useful, though. @Goldfish, we should see about getting that on Garin so he can mercilessly brutalize the Shadow Dragons.

I'm just hyped that we're finally wiping out (or attempting to, at least) one of our enemies. One less threat...
