While you wait for the commoners to prepare the required materials, you are forced to focus on matters unrelated to transliminal mechanics. To this end, you've guided your apprentice to an unoccupied glade.
"Restoration." You begin, holding out a golden orb of energy. "The art of healing wounds, restoring vitality, fortifying the body, and preventing disease. Many do not consider restoration to be a subject worthy of their time, but a wise mage will keep in mind that this school of magic is a powerful and misunderstood area of study."
"To revisit an earlier lesson, think back to what I told you about the schools of magic. Considering Restoration as if it only applies to living creatures is a self-imposed limit on an otherwise versatile practice and ignores entire branches of the craft that can be used to combat one's enemies. There also exists rituals for repairing objects available for those who are willing to learn as well as methods for blending healing spells with necromancy to repair undead minions."
"Healing is very similar to hurting when it comes to magic, it is simply focused on repairing damage instead of causing it... though as I said before, magic is never so simple. Remember that sunlight may be used for it's nourishing light or burn your enemies with punishing heat, just as healing can be used to fuse a man's spine and a Fireball may save a freezing man's life."
With a thoughtful expression, Louise asks, "But what's to stop somebody from hurting those they're trying to heal? If there's no rules other than application, how do you know when you're finished? I mean, what if I heal a visible wound, but don't do enough for the deeper problems?"
"Practice, studying, intent, and most importantly communicating with your patient to be sure there are no lingering symptoms. Many healers harness their empathy to reduce the suffering of others, some are more methodical and focus on their knowledge of how the body works to mend wounds, and still others heal by invoking the divines such as Kyne or Stendarr. Each method has it's strengths and it will be up to you to practice until you discover what works best for you... though I would recommend that you do not become too reliant on faith to solve your problems for you." Pointing to her sword, you begin walking away as you say, "I will return later, practice on small wounds while I am away."
------------------------------------------------------------
Ten minutes later, she's still trembling in nervousness with the sword gripped tightly. Finally coming to a decision, Louise holds her blade in one hand and pulls it across the skin of her palm. Blood wells up from the wound as she hisses in pain.
With panicked whispering, the teen focuses on her good hand until sparks of magic coalesce into something that could be called a sphere if one was feeling generous. The light sputters and dies soon after, causing her worry to double.
On the fourth attempt, the orb of magic lasts longer than a few moments and she slowly moves it over the wound. "Come on... work!" She mutters to herself. Shaking as the blood drips from her fingers, Louise places the flickering ball of gold to her skin. Seeing the sliced flesh stitching itself back together, the girl allows herself to collapse to her knees in relief.
Watching from your hiding place in the boughs, she wasn't in any real danger as you wouldn't have allowed the girl to waste your time by dying. You keep silent as your apprentice takes a calming breath and begins again with confidence.
------------------------------------------------------------
"That should be enough." You say as the workers finish pouring another cart full of sand into the largest crater on the property. Apparently Louise's early years of magical training were more useful as landscaping than instruction and not all of her tutors escaped unharmed. Unfortunate for them, but rather useful in your current endeavor. "Are you girls ready?"
Nodding with determination, the pink haired duo step forward from the gathered crowd of peasants. Taking position at equal distance apart, the three of you begin casting the hottest flames you can into the sand, Cattleya requiring bursts due to her dependence on the local's odd chanting spells. As the silicate melts under the combined heat, the onlookers 'ooh' and 'ahh' at the display of power. Having explained to the sisters about the process prior to starting, Louise is prepared to pick up the slack as you switch from flames to telekinesis and begin pulling the molten glass into the air.
As the last of the incandescent material is lifted from the pit, the Valliere sisters switch spells, Louise cools the column of glass with Frost and Cattleya using her own form of Telekinesis to assist you in churning the material as it cools to prevent fracturing. Setting the obsidian pillar off to the side, you drink the water that one of the maids offers and sit next to your apprentice to watch the servants refill the makeshift kiln.
"This seems unnecessarily complicated, why don't we just use alchemy to make these?" Cattleya asks as she takes her place by Louise's side. "Making glass is just a line spell after all. Now that I don't need to restrain myself anymore, I'm sure I could finish these things on my own.
Withholding your urge to kick her into the super-heated crater, you prod your apprentice instead. Let the girl correct her sister's mistake if she values the elder pinkette's life, these syntax issues are going to be the death of this world if they don't stop uttering these misnomers in your presence.
Rubbing her ribs and glaring at you, Louise clears her throat. "The term you are looking for is transmutation. The way Master Cynric explains it, Alchemy is the process of combining two or more magical 'chemicals' to create a consumable spell." The way she pronounces the word chemicals reminds you of how scientifically inept these people are in more areas than just magic. Seriously, how the cannot understand basic principles such as varliance, but still manage levitation is beyond you. "Transmutation, on the other hand, is using magic to directly change one material into another without any steps between... He gets really upset when people label things in a different way than him. Ow!" She finishes in a whisper, though you still jab her side again for not whispering quietly enough.
"In any case, we are using this process due to the fact that the glass will be more accepting of magicka when created with magical flames. Not quite enchanting, but it is still necessary if you wish to open a stable portal between realms for more than a few days without shattering the portal's boundaries." You explain, holding the younger Valliere away from you by her head while she valiantly attempts to tear your innards out with her bare hands.
"Oh my! That sounds rather unpleasant." Cattleya says, not appearing worried in the slightest as she smiles at her enraged sibling.
Switching arms and ignoring Louise's outraged cries, you nod at the woman's statement. "A sigil stone is capable of holding the portal's shape, but if the pillars that form the portal's boundaries is broken, deactivating the gate could cause a breakage in local time due to the unstable nature of Oblivion. Do not worry, normal Oblivion gates are created in a way that makes this irrelevant and my method is perfectly safe as long as you create the pillars correctly. Nothing can damage my gate while it is active."
Eventually the tiny terror wears herself out and lays down in the grass at your side. After several minutes of shifting in place, she begins snoring as she curls up against your leg. You brush the fluffy mess of tangled pink out of her face so that you don't have witness her unsightly habit of trying to scrape loose hairs from her tongue after waking. Unfortunately, this action causes Cattleya to feel inclined to comment. "You know... I don't think I've seen Louise this happy in a long time."
"Happy? Is attempted murder is a sign of affection? In that case, I suppose I should apologize to a few people." You say sarcastically.
Covering her mouth as she giggles at your words, Cattleya shakes her head. "Don't be silly, it's obvious to anyone who cares to see. She looks up to you, I should know considering how it used to be me in your position. Louise has always been a troubled child, please don't hold it against her."
With an irritated snort, you look the smiling woman in the eyes. "The girl wouldn't be such a mess if anyone had bothered to take proper care of her. Honestly, I could understand giving up on teaching her if you lack the correct methods... but allowing a perceived failure to face daily ridicule amongst her peers is just asking for her to either kill herself or all of you, possibly both. I know of many who were willing to sell their souls to a Daedric Lord in exchange for power and revenge."
In what seems to be an effort to show herself as dull-witted as possible, she smiles even wider at your words. "Yes, unfortunately I could see that as a likely outcome, though you must excuse me when I say I don't know exactly what you mean about Daedric lords. In any case,-" Standing, she lifts the hem of her dress and curtsies. "- thank you for looking after my baby sister. I'm glad she found someone as kind and wise as you to teach her."
Coughing on your drink, you're unable to reply to the woman before she disappears into the surrounding forest. Several hours later, after enough sand is gathered and Catttleya returns, the three of you create the second obsidian pillar required to finish the gate. No words are exchanged and you have a feeling that none of you are on the same page when it comes to your relationship, but the servants all seem to agree with the elder sister... If their muttering, furtive glances, and constantly friendly smiles are anything to go by.

A/N: Due to a tie, teaching Louise was divided between general magical knowledge and restoration, reducing the effectiveness of both lessons. Louise is now fifteen percent(total) less likely to fail a non-offensive spell. Louise has learned Close Wounds.
