Louise Truly Is Cattleya's Sister
Searching for current events in Brockton Bay brings up several promising results. Parahumans online has been useful previously and one of the options turns out to be an intangible copy of a local newspaper. Just below those two is something called 'channel 3 news' and she chose that one just to see if it would be a good addition to her sources.

The page contained a dozen of pictures of people, but other than a two sentence summary for each and a list of names, she couldn't find any script. What kind of useless news was this? A few photographs wasn't nearly as useful as an actual accounting of events and... there was a cat on a man's head three pictures from the top. Trying to make the picture larger, because that didn't make any sense, she double tapped the image. Rather than simply get bigger, it rotated and took up the entire screen. It was indeed a cat.

The silly thing was perched on the head of a man who was sleeping in a garden. From it's seat, the furry orange thing would sit completely still until a butterfly came near and it would stand up on it's hind legs to flail at the insect before sitting back down. It was stupid and completely not adorable. The pinkette spent the next three hours watching subsequent cats fall in bubblebaths, meow in tune with music, wrestle for space in a box, run away from cucumbers, and sneezing kittens. Before she realized it, Hinata had returned and was sitting beside her as the two ate lunch. Unfortunately, the fun ended when the battery died and Louise remembered what she was supposed to be doing.

Throwing herself back onto the bed with a groan, startling Hinata in the process, she rolled over and cursed into the pillow.

How could I let myself get distracted like that? I must look so incompetent to Hinata, she probably lost whatever respect she had for me!

Peeking back up at the younger girl, Louise saw her fumbling to clean up the sandwich she dropped on the bed, completely oblivious to the pinkette's thoughts. Sighing in a mix of relief and exasperation, Louise sat back up and straightened out her appearance... which was still in need of proper clothing.

"Did you discover anything useful, Hinata?" She asked once she regained her composure, startling the girl into dropping her food again.

Looking between the mess and the older girl, Hinata blushed. "Eto... I found more black armored guards all around the building... some were joking about somebody name Bakuda being assaulted. T-the bombs went off when she died." Nodding, Louise motioned for her to continue. "T-there's two dozen guards inside and more on a rotating shift outside. Panacea returned two hours ago and is on the ground floor... t-those... undersider people were spotted fighting someone named Hookwolf? Ano... I'm not sure what more you wanted to know."

"I'm just trying to figure out if anything has happened that could have consequences for us." Louise explained absently, pondering on whether she should risk damaging the phone with a bit of shock magic. "Was there anything else?"

"There's a pair in a closet having s... N-n-no, that was everything!" Hinata shouted.

Giving her a dubious look, Louise decided not to press her about why she spied on a couple of rutting peasants. "Very well, good work." She said, patting the girl on the head, causing her to blush again. "Do you still have the bag my 'grandfather' sent with you?"

Nodding, Hinata reached under the much too large shirt and unstrapped a small pouch from her belt. Gently handing it over, she did that odd finger poking thing. Ignoring that for the moment, the Valliere girl inspected the contents of the pouch. The items inside were useless scraps of metal such as rusted nails and broken ceramics... at least, that's what the peasants would think. Rather than the dross it appeared to be, each and every one was a priceless treasure. It would take time to study all of them and she needed a soul gem to reproduce any of the enchantments.

Best not disenchant them until I can make a replacement.

With that in mind and needing to find her clothing anyway, Louise hopped off of the bed and marched for the door. Knocking on the wood, she garnered the attention of the gender-less appearing guards outside. When one of them opened the door and looked back at her with their armored faceplate, she crossed her arms and put on a pouting face. "Who took my dress?"

"Er... a nurse?" The newly identified man asked, looking to the other and receiving a shrug. "If you press the button beside your bed, that should call one of the hospital staff to help. You should probably stay inside until you get your costume back, maybe think about getting some hair dye while you're at it, yeah?"

Turning around as if to find the button, she let them close the door and went back to press her ear against the door.

"Man, she looks so fragile outside that poofy dress. You hear about..."

"Yeah, fuckin' bastards. What kind of sick fuck does that to a kid?"

"I dunno, but that's why Piggot's got us all here. E88's gonna bleed out the ass if they try anything."

"As if they can. I heard Kaiser was visiting Medhall for something in civvies when Bakuda died and nobodies heard anything from Krieg either. Hookwolf's not leader material, so my money's on Purity or Victor taking over, but-"

"-But it's gonna be a bloody mess, yeah. Here's hoping they all kill each other and save us the trouble."

When neither said anything else for a while, the pinkette went to search for the button. Not long after, she was treated to the sight of an apologetic nurse carrying her dress into the room. With a bit of questioning on how she was feeling and a story about washing the blood from her dress, Louise finally got to put on some real clothes. Mask, gloves, and heels followed after before she sent the nurse in search of whoever was in charge of her payment. Once the woman returned with her money and quartz, she could begin working in earnest.

As a last thought popped into her head, she turned to Hinata, who had her eyes activated and was blushing again. Snapping her fingers in front of the girl's face, she sent her off to find Amy and ask for the charging cord to her phone. Hopefully that would be safer than shocking the device back to life. At least staying at the hospice meant she could keep the thing powered up easier than in an abandoned cellar.

Looks like the hospital guards are aboveboard; Coil likely has at least one of them keeping tabs on Louise, but probably doesn't have the pull to do anything untoward to her in the middle of the hospital.

Nice to know Bakuda's out of the picture; her deadman's switch probably means that Oni Lee's toast too. If Lung got free, somebody probably would have mentioned it, so the ABB's pretty much done.

Kaiser ending up as collateral and possibly Krieg too puts the Empire in the same boat as it was post-Leviathan in canon. I don't remember precisely when Kaiser brought Purity back into the fold, so she might still be doing her vigilante thing, and if Purity's not onside, than means Night & Fog may stay in Boston, so the Empire's roster is in even worse shape.

The Undersiders fighting with Hookwolf is probably Bitch's stance against dog fighting coming to a head, and possibly backed by Coil. Coil must be having a grand ol' time shuffling his plans around, considering how many players in the Brockton Bay underworld are off the board now. He may never end up needing to out the E88, but maybe he'll still sic child services on Purity's kid to make her go berserk as per canon.

The Merchants may move to absorb a bunch of now lightly defended territory, but they're the Merchants; for all we know, they got off-screened by a stray Bakuda bomb. Further, they don't have the post-Leviathan environment for their canon explosive growth, so odds are they'll get smacked down if they try getting too big for their britches.

We don't know what casualties the heroes took during the fight with Bakuda. Bakuda could have taken Assault with her due to her deadman's switch, but the guards probably wouldn't have been joking about it were he dead. If he is dead, Battery may be sidelined due to grief. Further, I think the Wards are stationed at the PRT HQ rather than the Protectorate Rig, so they could have taken losses in the fight, but MM would probably have been more grim were that the case.

With all the gang losses, we could see movement from the Boston gangs as per canon. The Travelers are probably already in the Bay. Probably no Accord due to his amicable relationship with Coil. The Teeth might try to move back into town, and the Teeth means The Butcher, so that would be fun.

The bombing spree may have been stopped a lot earlier than it was in canon, but the unrest in the criminal underworld may mean that an Endbringer may be attracted to the violence (I think that was part of their criteria) and still show up. Leviathan's the most survivable with Louise's skill set, but if Ziz decided to break order and come down to see what's been messing with her precog, I'll be all for bailing out of the universe with an imperfect Recall and damn the consequences.

"There's a pair in a closet having s... N-n-no, that was everything!" Hinata shouted.
As a last thought popped into her head, she turned to Hinata, who had her eyes activated and was blushing again.

...of course. I'll bet Hinata's entire clan is like that, their eyes are practically purpose built for it. It makes so much sense.

Anyways, looking at the voting options:

[] Recall

-Louise already has a leg up on this due to her previous study of that Recall scroll; having a reusable Recall enchant would be handy to have until Louise masters the spell, but it would be less desirable as a trading item until she could figure out a Mark enchant too. Additionally, due to the higher magicka cost for the spell, might a Recall enchant require the soul of something a bit bigger than a seagull?

[] Translation

-Not anything Louise needs personally, but could be quite lucrative if she can find buyers through Faultline or set up a contract with the PRT.

[] Water Walking

-Could be useful if Leviathan shows up, but trying to walk over the tidal waves he brings would probably go poorly.

[] Water Breathing

-Much more useful for Leviathan, and the PRT would probably be really interested if a large number could be produced to help cut down on all the deaths by drowning. It might also lead into them inquiring if the effect could be applied to entire Endbringer shelters, which may not be possible with Skyrim magic, but could open up some interesting avenues.

[] Fortify Stamina

-Physical exhaustion is a glaring weakness for Louise, so tricking out her equipment and clothing with this enchant would be one way to shore that up.

I think I'll go with the following for now:

[X] Recall
[X] Water Breathing
[X] Fortify Stamina

All good conjecture. I would like to point out that Oni Lee can't use Tinker tech with his power, otherwise they would have done so in canon. You would have had better information if not for choosing to be distracted by cat videos, but I'll go ahead and say that a few Wards were injured in the fight and then shuffled through the ER. Between Louise and Amy, hardly anyone who wasn't instant killed actually died... other than those hundreds who were too slow to arrive before Louise hit the dirt.

You know, there is the option of not having an Endbringer attack. Social unrest may be a part of their criteria, but Leviathan came to BB instead of the much larger port city of Boston for one reason (two if you consider Kephri to be a Ziz plot).

Hinata isn't a pervert! I-i-it's not her fault she needs to keep an eye out for threats, m-maybe those people should get back to work.

...Noelle?

Indeed, much like Phir se in india. Of course, in character you have no way of knowing this and even if you did, getting rid of her wouldn't be easy... Evil Louise would be a nightmare for all involved.

On an unrelated note; I had ants in my kitchen and was content to let them live when barring them entry with cinnamon worked for a while, but last night they entered my bedroom and now it's war! I will still probably post tonight, but if I die... Avenge me!

I'm... I'm sorry, but is there a distinction?:confused:o_O
Louise isn't evil, just... morally challenged by a modern perception. Given her role models, can you blame her? Besides, the most important distinction is that Evil!Louise would be actively malicious toward any and all that Louise cares for.

Yeah, I figured. I was mainly just being silly.:p

Enchantment And Disenchantment
While waiting for Hinata to return, the nurse had dropped off a small box of six crystals and a plastic rectangle that she assured the pinkette contained more money than she would reasonably be able to spend. Not believing her for a second, but unsure of how to go about verifying her words, Louise set about studying some of her new trinkets.

Thanks to her experience with the spell, she was quickly able to separate the Recall enchantment from the others and repeat her previous success with the Levitation enchantment. Unlike with the massive number of crystals from before, being able to concentrate on just six meant she could convert the gems through sheer volume of power instead of days of bathing them in magicka. While not the most efficient route to take, it was more than satisfactory and soon enough she had the souls of several unfortunate pigeons trapped in crystalline form. Not wasting a moment, the young woman copied the enchantment from the rusted nail onto a length of plastic tubing taken from the beeping machine. Neither the material nor the soul were of the best quality, meaning it would probably only have a few uses for such a volatile spell, but it's not like she was planning on constantly using it.

Tying the tube around her wrist like a cheap bangle from Rub al Khali, she pulled out another nail. The second object took much longer as she had no idea what effect the magic was supposed to have. It had to do with breathing, but other than that, she couldn't tell. Deciding just to copy it for now and try to understand later, she spent the next ten minutes carefully isolating the odd patterns in the energy and copying it onto her mask. Hopefully it was something powerful like breathing out a cloud of poison, then she could activate it if an enemy tried to flee.

Is poison magic a thing?
She pondered, pausing as she reached for another item. I know of poison runes, but that's not very useful in direct combat. Then again, poison isn't the sort of thing you'd see in honorable combat... more of a dirty trick used by commoners and weaklings. Is that what I am, despite everything?

Pulling off her mask to stare at it, she felt a twinge of shame for her earlier excitement. Wasn't the whole reason she started learning under Master Cynric so that she didn't need to rely on such tactics? To be strong enough to make her detractors into admirers? To make her family proud and perhaps find companionship? Almost two years later and though she had people to call friends for the first time in a long while and Cattleya's support had never wavered, had anything really changed for the better?

Her mother was determined to spill her blood, she'd never heard from Eleanor before leaving her world, her father was... was he even still alive? She hadn't seen him since Karin brought her home and locked her in her room. Other than Cattleya, it seemed she had done nothing but sink even further in her family's eyes. As for companionship, she hadn't spoke a word to Viscount Wardes in years and according to her teacher, she'd all but abandoned Prin- Queen Henrietta in a fetid swamp. For all her newfound magical strength, it didn't seem like she was improving in anything that truly mattered. Was she really so caught up in learning magic for the sake of knowing that she had forgotten her reason for learning?

Did it matter?

Looking up from her mask at the sound of the door opening, she smiled weakly at Hinata as the girl held up the charging cord. "Thanks."

Nodding in response, the pale eyed girl sat down on the end of the bed and stared at the dead birds on the window sill. Not in the mood to talk, Louise was grateful for the silence as she finished working on one last enchantment. It was obviously intended to increase the users stamina and she easily applied her knowledge of Fortify Strength to unraveling it, so it was a few minutes later that she applied the magic to one of her heels and her restlessness got the better of her. Hopping of the bed, Louise paced back and forth before turning toward the door.

"L-Louise? W-where are you going? Louise?!"

She needed to do something... Anything. Even if it ruined her innocent child facade, she couldn't sit another moment in that sterile white room.

A Breath Of 'Fresh' Air
"I'm just going out for some air." Louise replied, deciding to just avoid dealing with the guards and exit through the window.

As she was waiting for another idiotic bird to come close, Hinata fussed with the hem of her shirt and weakly protested, "Y-you should be resting."

Somewhere along the, way the girl's determination had shriveled up and returned to wherever it usually hid in her pathetic ego. It was more frustrating than endearing at the moment and the pinkette felt a bit irritated at the both of them. Hinata for refusing to stand her ground and herself for being so uncharitable to the poor noble child who hadn't done anything to deserve such treatment. Sighing, she asked, "Well, I'm going anyway. Would you like to come along? I promise we'll only go up to the roof.

"I... are you alright?"

Spearing a hapless bird with an Ice Spike and stealing it's soul, she snapped, "Yes or no, Hinata?"

"Y-yes?" The girl squeaked as the pair watched the corpse tumble to the street below. Looking at the girl's quivering form, Louise's irritation turned to guilt. It wasn't Hinata's fault that she was upset, the girl had been nothing but kind and helpful.

Pulling off one of her gloves, the young mage used her newly acquired soul to enchant the garment with Levitation and held it out. "I'm sorry... I just... I'm not in the best of moods and I don't want to talk about it."

"N-no... It isn't my business, I shouldn't have asked." Hinata mumbled, accepting the glove by reflex. Staring down at the white cloth, she asked, "Why are you giving me this?"

"I enchanted it to let you fly... Take it as my apologizing for putting you through all this. If you don't want it, I suppose I could carry you."

Blushing, the younger girl shook her head furiously. "N-n-no, I'll take it."

"Great, I don't know if I could pick you up anyway." Louise teased halfheartedly.

Sticking her tongue out at the weak glare sent her way, she impatiently shot several shards of ice and Soul Trap spells at a more distant pigeon until it died a messy death on an otherwise pristine window. With the loose strip of cloth that served as a faux belt on the dress, her enchantment was in place and the two of them leapt out the window. After needing to catch Hinata when the pale eyed girl failed to activate the magic in her glove, she carefully instructed her on how to operate it. Since it was fairly intuitive, coupled with the ninja's experience with her own brand of magic and her magic eyes, it didn't take long for her to master flying. Which was good, because if X-com peasants could figure it out, then any noble who couldn't would surely die of shame and Louise liked Hinata despite her character flaws.

Sitting on a silver box on top of the building as a strange droning noise emanated from inside it, the two stared out at the devastated city. Whoever this 'Bakuda' person was, Louise could definitely admire their magical prowess. Huge buildings unmatched by all but the most powerful of Halkeginian nobility were demolished, an entire avenue in the center of the city was frozen in time, and many of the mysterious mage's spells had yet to fade even days after her defeat. Surely this world was lesser for her loss.

"I... until meeting you, I'd never seen a barrier technique... they are supposed to be a nearly forgotten art... now it seems they're everywhere." Hinata said suddenly.

Looking over to the girl in confusion, Louise saw she was pointing toward the Protectorate's castle in the bay. "Ah." She replied, not really sure what else to say... it wasn't like she knew any spells like that, but it hadn't really seemed that interesting to her.

Undeterred, Hinata continued, "D-do you think my f-father would be proud of me if I returned a technique like that?"

"I'm sure-" Louise began before pausing as she looked into the younger girl's misty, pale eyes. Rather than finish the platitude, she shook her head and answered, "I don't think I'm the one to ask about family problems... sorry."

And here I was sulking over my own problems. I didn't even think about how it must be for Hinata and Vicky... they didn't choose to be summoned by Master Cynric, but they're not collapsing in on themselves. Well, Hinata's doing her best not to, but she us just a child... and she's doing better than I am at it.

As the silence grew and she could all but feel the Hyuga child's disappointment with her answer, Louise decided to change the subject to something less depressing than how shameful their families found them. "So... when I chose to come up here for fresh air, I forgot how bad this city smells."

And it really did. The whole place reeked of some unidentifiable scent and even the clouds seemed slightly tinged from the foul air. It was disgusting now that she paid attention to it... not that it was anywhere near as bad as Quelana's swamp. That place could make a person want to burn off their own nose.

"Yeah." Hinata sighed, not bothering to look up from staring into her lap.

"Do you want to go back in?" She asked, only receiving a shake of the head in response. Desperate to lift the somber mood and not sure what else to do, she chose to emulate Vicky or... heavens forbid her ever hear of it... Espinoza. Quickly closing the distance between them, Louise pounced and tried to tickle her.

Only to get a startled palm to the nose by Hinata's absurd reflexes. Blinking away the tears in her eyes, Louise sat back up, though she was unsure of when she had fallen, and pulled her hands away from her face to see blood on her fingers. Gingerly touching her nose while the younger girl apologized profusely, she confirmed that it was indeed broken. Taking care not to get blood on her dress again, she healed herself and began the undignified act of trying to blow the excess blood from her nostrils.

Well, at least she isn't brooding anymore, all she needed was to hurt somebody. The pinkette thought with mild amusement. "It's fine, I've had worse." Wanting to keep the mood light, she walked over to the edge of the roof and asked, "If I'm recovered enough to be punched in the face, does that mean I don't have to go back inside?"

"I-I'm really sorry!" Hinata repeated for the dozenth time.

Using a brief burst of telekinesis to poke the girl in her side, from a safe distance this time, Louise was pleased to note that Hinata was indeed ticklish. As the younger girl looked toward her amid panicked giggles, she gave her a mock glare. "I said not to worry about it... but seriously, I would prefer not to go back inside for longer than it takes to wash this blood off and retrieve my phone."

The phone she had forgotten to plug into the charger.

"DAMN IT ALL!"

With that sudden scream of frustration that startled both Hinata and the commoners on the street below, Louise ruefully shook her fist toward the heavens. Surely this was the work of some malevolent god, there was no way she could forget something so important. Now it would take however long the device needed to charge before she could begin.

Though I wouldn't be opposed if people wanna head to the library or otherwise try for a change of scenery instead.
