This war is chaos, the previous one was as well. Nobody helps, nobody seemingly wants to help. The servant summoned to do so seems powerless and distant. If nobody else will, I will. I will protect my loved ones. I can't save everyone, but I can save enough. I will always prioritize you all over the masses, but I won't abandon them either.
 
I mean, the other two are part of the many reasons for Shirou to want to save people, but at his core, he seeks to be a hero because he wants to be one, not because someone has to.

This feels like a choice to change who Shirou is at his core, and I like the mindset of this flavor text more than canon Shirou's.

Let's not let Shirou sugar coat things for her. The fatalism and hinging of his self worth on his ability or inability to save a relative stranger was present post BB, a mere few updates back. Time to rip the bandaid off on shirou's martre complex. Letting him out the best spin on it helps no one. No one who cares about him anyway.

I don't need a reason to be a hero, a hero simply is. Perhaps that's crazy, perhaps that's foolish. It will certainly destroy me someday. But everyone I can help… it's worth it, it's always worth it. I don't need a reason. I will save those dear to me, and I will kill anyone who threatens them.
After this, I want Archer and Shirou to have a heart-heart conversation and tranning together. Great chapter.

I was a little stuck between this and "Because someone has to" but seeing some of the reasoning in the second made me back off slightly. As sort of cold as it is I wouldn't currently believe that Shiro is capable of prioritizing anyone over anyone else, even if he himself believes he can. Not to say that I think picking that option would be lying to Ayako because again I think that's what he wants to believe but I don't honestly know if he's capable of doing it mentally.

I dunno, maybe I'm reading too much into it. That's just my reasoning.

I'd say the extremes he takes it to cause it to impair his decision making. Instead of the best solution that potentially sacrifices himself, he makes the decision involving the greatest sacrifice on his part with likelihood of success and chance of rescue being secondary factors. He's improving, praise the witch, but there is still a long way to go and the more people aware of the depth of the problem the better.
