Can't forget the same thing happens to the prospective groom with the ladies. But yes, that's the Bedding, except for the actual bedding part which happens after
TBH, this is the part that worries me and that can get Nyra another 3-5 points of stress easily...

It was already uncomfortable enough for newly wedded couples, but when you have widows/widowers remarrying with children in the audience, it becomes exponentially more awkward...

I imagine the bedding ceremony is way more appropriate for younger, first-time couples and might serve to "ensure" consummation; with Viserys both being a widower and having an heir of his body, whatever dubious need there is for a bedding lies solely for the audience's entertainment. Which, given both Viserys and Rhaenyra's feelings on the matter, and probably Johanna's, likely means it's gotten vetoed.

It also helps that he is the master of the household. That is, he can give a veto. Not just as king, but - his hall, his rules. His word determines what will happen. Which isn't true for young heirs getting married, of course, many of whom might also wish to avoid that ceremony but will be bound by tradition.

Question for asoiaf wedding stuff, does the bride wear her house colours in the wedding dress, her husband colours or something else? Thanks.

Normally a bride enters wearing a cloak of her house colors. Her father or head of household will remove her cloak, and then her husband will wrap a cloak of his house colors around her.

It's a symbol that she has left her father's house and has now joined her husbands, that she can look to him for protection and shelter.

As such, brides often wear her house colors, or perhaps colors that would fit with both houses.

For example, when Cersei Lannister married Robert Baratheon I believe she wore a gold dress with a red cloak (Lannister colors are red and gold) and Robert wrapped her in a black cloak with a gold stag (Baratheon colors are black and gold).

If Cersei and married Rhaengar the way Tywin wanted, I would not be surprised if she wore a red dress with a gold cloak, since Targaryen colors are red and black.

It also helps that he is the master of the household. That is, he can give a veto. Not just as king, but - his hall, his rules. His word determines what will happen. Which isn't true for young heirs getting married, of course, many of whom might also wish to avoid that ceremony but will be bound by tradition.

I imagine some might be able to impose their will on the matter, if they chose to. For example, I suspect that if Tywin or Stannis had decided to oppose a bedding they might be able to impose their will despite not being head of household at the time. Tyrion after all managed to do it in his wedding to Sansa.

I don't think we should be the one bringing this up to the small council. Let Tyland suggest the first idea of a royal fleet. We do not want to give any impression that we are hostile to the Velaryons.

Well, I was thinking of suggesting the idea to Tyland (He is Master of Ships) or Otto (He can use this to chip away at the Velaryon's powerbase) then let them bring it up.

1: Suggest the idea of a royal progress.

2: Invite Laena, Laenor, and Rhaenys to join us on the royal tour.

As long as we can bring Alicent as well that does seem like a good idea.

The Seashell Wedding: Part II
The Seashell Wedding: Part II

You thought back to your first real conversation with Alicent after you were named heir and how she had come at least somewhat understand why you were on the path of a knight and a warrior. Marriage was a duty few noble ladies could avoid and you doubted she would react well to be told to neglect something expected of a woman of her status. But duty came in many forms.

"Perhaps one duty can replace another," you dared. "Become my Handmaiden and you won't be expected to marry for a decade more. Mayhaps even longer."

"Your handmaiden?" Alicent was surprised. "That's not a position you offer casually."

To be handmaiden to one of the royal family was the kind of thing minor noble families and the daughters of second and third sons would dream of. A position of duty that carried little actual power, but gave them direct access to the royal family and which thus could wield considerable influence.

"I'm not offering it casually, or simply because I can," you assured her. "You basically filled the role for years already. Helping me dress for important events. Aiding me study for my lessons. Fretting over my position at court. It's a duty you have already shown yourself more then capable of filling."

"If you would pay attention during our lessons, you wouldn't need my help," Alicent chastised before turning away awkwardly, her face gaining a shade of red that was becoming more and more familiar. "I don't know. My father might react poorly."

"Why would he be angry at you getting such a prestigious position?" you questioned. "And I know my father will not refuse me on this. I need people I can trust here and I don't want to risk losing one of the few people I can because your father decided to marry you off to some Swann or Manderly."

Handmaiden's were arguably advisors in all but name, and while Alicent had hidden things from you, she confessed everything she hid, even things you hadn't known. She may not have approved of what you did, but she understood your reasoning. You could depend on her to tell you what you needed to hear. What she believed you needed to hear at the very least.

Even by firelight, you could see how your words filled her with embarrassment and perhaps a touch of shame.

"I don't know if I am worthy of such a role," she mumbled.

"I don't agree," you countered. "By coming here you have shown yourself to be a true friend and a trusted ally. I can think of no one better for the position-"

You were surprised to find yourself suddenly embraced in a hug, Alicent's arms wrapped around you as tight as she could imagine.

"Thank you," she breathed in relief.

"I take it that's a yes?" you asked coyly.

Alicent nodded into your shoulder.

Relationship with Alicent Improved. New Status: Renewed Friendship

Sitting at the main table at a wedding gave you a prime spot to observe all the gathered lords and ladies. So many nobles gathered in one place. Lords sitting on the same tables as their liege lords. Marcher lords sitting next Vale Knights. To name just a few examples of the sights before you.

You were no Master of Whisperers, indeed that office had been vacant since your father became king, but even you realized the opportunity before you. So many lords, their wives and the heirs, your future subjects and bannermen, all before you, but not bowed in ceremony like they were when you were made heir. They were relaxed, perhaps unguarded even. You had a chance to see not a hint of people's characters, but who they choose to mingle with at such an important occasion.

You first turned your gaze towards your cousin, Jeyne Arryn, the lady of the Vale. After yourself, she was probably the most powerful woman in the Seven Kingdoms, holding one of them in her own right. You couldn't help but see her as a preview for what you would hold one day, and the struggles you might have to face. More than once, men had tried to remove her from her rightful seat. Even her own former regent and her kin had been trying. Which is probably why Jeyne sat on one side of the room while her cousin and nominal heir, Arnold Arryn, sat as far away as one could, though you could still see him glaring at Jeyne as he feasted and japed with other lords.

Jeyne herself was dealing with quite the situation as it seemed like every Lord in the realm was making some effort to at least greet her. As a woman of ten of nine, and ruler of the Vale, you knew many lords would have given anything for the chance at a marriage pact with her. But all the men who approached Jeyne soon departed in disappointment as it seemed your cousin had little interest in even making conversation with them. Instead, she filled most of her time talking with the various ladies she had managed to surround herself with. A Redfort girl was grabbing the lion's share of her attention, Jeyne laughing at some joke the girl made as she peeled a hard boiled egg.

Your gaze drifted and wandered on. You saw Borros Baratheon sitting with Harwin Strong, the two talking, loudly, about hunts they been on and and tourneys they'd taken part in. You noticed Borros was the louder and drunker of the two, while Harwin was comparatively calmer, lamenting he hadn't had a good hunt in a while. While you watched the two of them, you noticed Harwin's clubfooted brother, Larys. His eyes were focused anywhere but his brother's conversation. He caught notice of you watching, the first to do so, a ghost of a smile appearing on his face as he gave you a nod before his attention turned to a nearby conversation between Lady Redwyne and Lord Jason Lannister's mother.

After having your fill of roasted goose, which you found far too gamey for your palate, you went back to watching the crowd. Otto was talking with his son and for a moment you could have sworn Gwayne looked in your direction after something he said, but you could not be certain. Soon your attention drifted on towards the High Septon, the sight of his crystal crown making him rather hard to miss. You had little care for what the frail man was doing, though who he was talking to caught your interest. Most lords made quick yet notable efforts to pay respects to man. A few attending northern lords and the Blackwoods basically ignored him, but one person in particular seemed to be trying to strike up a conversation with the High Septon. Rhea Royce.

That was curious indeed. What on earth could your uncle's wife want to say to the most important holy man in the realm?

Intrigue Skill Improved

As dessert was served and people began to mill about in preparations for the upcoming dancing, you decided that now it was the time to mingle. You had a number of interesting people you could talk to, but your curiosity had simply been peaked too much by seeing Rhea Royce talk with the High Septon. Even though their conversation was over, you had to know more. That Rhea was here at all was something of a surprise. She may have been your aunt by marriage, but she was a very rare sight in King's Landing. Indeed, you could only recall meeting her one or twice before now. She cared nothing for her marriage, a sentiment Daemon shared, and the whole realm knew it.

"My good Aunt," you greeted warmly as you approached. "I am so glad you were able to make it."

"Princess Rhaenyra, have a seat," Rhea chuckled a bit at you referring to her as an aunt. "What brings you to my table?"

Rhea looked awkward in her yellow dress, her athletic frame clashing with the fairly conservative cut. She was surrounded by other Vale lords, who quickly gave their greetings to you before returning to their own conversations.

"I was going to ask you something similar," you remarked as you sat down. "We see you so rarely in King's Landing."

"My good husband has made it clear he would prefer the company of my father's sheep more than my presence," she replied mockingly, her voice hinting at bitterness. "And I am inclined to let him have their company."

"I have heard the way he talks about you at the Small Council. It's shameful." You shook your head with a hint of sadness.

Daemon's treatment of his wife was a mockery of everything a marriage should be. The two should never have been wed.

"That's most kind, though it's no trouble. Hunting is better in the Vale anyways." Rhea replied, her eyes gaining a most curious look about them. "Though I must confess I was greatly amused to hear he has been replaced by a little girl. No offense, Princess."

"None taken."

"Though not quite so little anymore, are you?" Rhea noted as she seemed to study you for a moment. "I must ask again what brings you to my table, Princess. I hope I have not offended the king by not joining you and yours at the main table. I hardly think I count as family."

"While my father does grieve that you will not call him brother, he understands," you explained. "I came here simply to satisfy my curiosity. You come all this way to my father's wedding when you have stayed away from almost every event that has happened in the capital. Even when I was named Princess of Dragonstone. And yet you are here, but have kept distance from my father, only talking with your fellow lords of the Vale, and the High Septon."

You kept your tone light to make it clear none of this was an accusation of any kind. Whatever Rhea Royce was up to, you very much doubted it was a threat to you. She probably knew that if Daemon ever became King, he would have dissolved his marriage to his "Bronze Bitch" before the crown was even placed on his head. So, you knew she couldn't be here to subvert your status as heir. Then what was she doing?

"Ahh, I see I have not been very subtle," Rhea replied with a hint of sheepishness. "I will be honest, I came here seeking the dissolution of my marriage to your uncle."

You stared at her with wide eyes. That was not what you expected.

"What brought this on?" you asked.

You knew your uncle had asked for something over the years, as their marriage remained unconsummated it would have been easy to do so, but your father refused him every time. Your mother being an Arryn had left your father rather fond of the Vale and he did not like to like to upset them.
"Occasionally reminding your dear uncle that he was still legally bond to me had it's amusements, don't get me wrong," Rhea said playfully, "but that matter on Dragonstone has some of my cousins a bit worried. I hear whispers that some think I should be put aside so my husband cannot pull a similar stunt on Runestone and claim it for himself. If I was to dissolve the marriage, I could silence the whispers."

"I doubt Lady Jeyne would allow such a thing," you argued.

Rhea glanced at her liege lord sitting a table over.

"I'm not sure she'd care," Rhea shrugged, "Lady Jeyne believes my father tried to have her replaced as the ruling lord while he acted her regent and clearly views my status as his heir as a bemusing irony."

"So, did the High Septon agree to dissolve your marriage?" you asked, unsure what you could say about Jeyne Arryn.

"Nah," Rhea replied bluntly. "The High Septon won't dissolve a marriage to the royal family unless the King approves and your father has so far ignored my requests."

She looked at you intently.

"I take it you want me to discuss the issue with my father?"

"I don't expect you to. This whole effort has been a failure as far as I am concerned," Rhea admitted, "but I would consider myself greatly in your debt and your friend for life if you did."

A lord, or even the heir to the lord in your debt could be useful, and more friends never hurt. But even bring up the matter to your father seemed like you would just be asking for an arguement, and there was no telling if he would say yes.

How do you reply to Rhea Royce?

[] Agree to speak to your father about this matter on her behalf.

[] Apologize and tell her you can't get involved in such a matter.

[] Offer to speak to Lady Jeyne Arryn about her concerns.

[] Remain non-committal on the issue.

[] Write-in (Subject to QM Approval)

As the dancing began, you suddenly found yourself under the gaze of many eyes. They didn't stare at you per se. Few were that unsubtle, but you could see so many catching glances at you. Several lords and heirs were trying to approach you before losing their nerve and trying to pretend they hadn't just done that.

You could have just gone back to your seat and had your fill of fruits, puddings and any other dessert that struck your fancy. You could have danced with just about any lord or knight in this room. A dance wasn't an offer of marriage. It wasn't a commitment to anything. But you knew they would take it as interest and interest would be followed by dozens of offers and counter-offers for your hand in marriage. The Realm would treat you like a prize cut of meat at the market. Dancing was supposed to be fun, and you very much intended to have fun this night.

A thought occurred to you. Nothing said you had to dance with a man. Dancing with a woman went against convention for other women but had convention stopped you?

Your first thought was Alicent. After all the stress she had been under recently, it would have been nice to give her a chance to enjoy herself. But you knew Alicent enough to know she'd refuse you and probably be embarrassed by the whole thing.

So, your attention turned to one of the only other women at dinner who showed no interest in dancing with a man. Lady Jeyne Arryn. You approached the Lady of the Vale confident as she turned down an offer from a Frey lad roughly your age. To his credit, the Frey accepted the refusal with grace and smile, briefly considering extending a similar offer to you before deciding against it and returning to his table.

"Not a fan of dancing?" You asked playfully.

Jeyne starred at you questioningly, perhaps wondering if you had some scheme in mind.

"I quite enjoy dancing as a matter of fact," Jeyne replied. "It's just so rare I find someone I wish to dance with."

Without fear or hesitation you extended you hand. "Would you consider a dance with me then?"

The ladies around the lady Arryn stared in silence, and even Jeyne herself couldn't hide her surprise.

"You are quite the bold one, aren't you Princess?" She remarked.

"I want a little fun, not a night of lords seeking my hand in marriage," you explained.

"Ahh, I understand that all too well," her voice warm with sympathy as she extended her hand. "Very well Princess. You take lead. "

You helped her up out of her seat and lead her to the dance floor. With many already dancing and the hall filled so much conversation it almost drowned out the music, you and Jeyne's dancing went almost unnoticed at first.

The dance was fairly simple. You held Jeyne by the hand as the two of you made a circle, then you let go and spun around each other, followed by a quick lift and some simple footwork. This was the kind of dance you had tutors all but cram into your head for years now, so most of the motions came easily enough.

It was only when you lifted Jeyne, something Jeyne herself quite enjoyed, that people began to notice that two women were dancing together.

You were almost surprised that the dancing didn't immediately stop. A few near you stumbled or halted and the music went out of tune for a moment as your actions caught the lute player by surprise, but quickly things smoothed out. There were still plenty of whispers though, and many stares. You could feel the eyes of the room upon you once again.

You caught sight of your father staring at you as he ate. He was clearly annoyed, but resigned to your actions and made no effort to stop you. His new wife by contrast had you fixed with a cold hard gaze. She seemed downright furious for some reason.

You could see the disapproval or annoyance in the faces of Otto, the Lord Commander, and Lord Strong. In contrast, your sworn shield didn't even seem to notice as his eyes panned over the room, looking for threats. Lord Beesbury seemed oblivious as well, seemingly enjoying his honey cakes too much to notice anything beyond them. Alicent was focused on you, but her face was all but a mask, the only sign she even cared about your dancing was how wide those brown eyes of hers had become.

Some of the other lords whispered their disgust under their breath while others simply stared in disapprove. A few watched you with interest while the rest focused on their own dancing, their own little worlds.

"There will be whispers about this for years," Jeyne remarked as you spun her around.

"Men have been whispering behind my back for years now," you replied dismissively, "what they say matters little to me anymore."

The Red Keep was filled with gossip for months after the first time you were caught getting into fights with the stable boys. Every time you had broken nose or a black eye, it felt like everyone from the servants to lords of the realm would whisper as you passed. At first it made you angry. At times you even cried in your room out of embarrassment and frustration, but eventually you learned to ignore this. Whispers were just another pain your life has brought you, no different than sore muscles after a long day of training or a aching back after you'd fallen off your horse.

"Bold words," Jeyne replied as she moved gracefully across the floor, "though I would not ignore them completely. A whispered threat can be just as dangerous as a spoken one, even for one as strong as you, Princess."

"Of course she's dancing with a woman," Lord Jason Lannister said loudly and clearly drunk. "What man would want to dance with such a-"

The Lord of Casterly Rock was silenced by his twin's urging, the two turning to see your father starring at them with a murderous expression.

Your father was always jovial and eager to make friends. This led some to believe him weak, but like you he was a dragon, and even the kindest dragon had fire within them.

Jeyne ignored the scene as the two of you kept up your dance.

"I am curious. Why did you ask me to dance?" She asked as you lifted her up again.

"I told you. I wanted to have fun," you said, keeping your voice just loud enough to be heard.

"Is that all?" Jeyne seemed skeptical. "It's been my experience that most people who ask someone to dance have interests beyond just fun."

"I am not seeking your hand in marriage, if that's what you are wondering," you replied playfully.

Jeyne laughed at your remark.

"I did not think you did," she smiled. "But it has been my experience that often times the interests men have in women are often shared by many women as well."

"Do they now?"

You had heard rumors about Lady Jeyne and the women of her court. Of course, you had heard just as many rumors implying Jeyne was having sex with every lord in the Vale and even some of the mountain clans. The Red Keep loved it's gossip, no matter its truth. But her words right now seemed a definite sign the former kind of rumors had some truth to them.

"I am not normally one for boldness," Jeyne admitted, "but you clearly are. So I will ask in more plain terms. Is this just a dance or do you seek my affections as well, princess?"

Her face was calm, smiling faintly as she awaited your reply. You think she might have been interested, but you weren't sure. Then again you weren't even sure if you were interested. You had told yourself it was just for fun and to stir up a bit of trouble, but you had sought out someone close to your age, someone who you knew was plenty rumored to prefer the company of other women entirely over men.

Was this just about dancing?

Your Reply to Jeyne

[] "I just wanted to dance. Nothing more."

[] "Perhaps. I am unsure myself I must admit."

[] "I do, and I hope you seek my affection as well."

[] "I wanted to see what it is like to dance with a woman, and perhaps make a friend who understands."

QM's Note: I hope seeing all those degraded reactions doesn't scare you. But Defiant is basically actively rebelling against the norms society has placed upon you, it will provoke disapproval and notice. It's not instant death for your efforts to claim the throne, but do expect pushback. Also, yes, to be clear, Jeyne Arryn is absolutely a romance option if you wish.

That should count as attempted suicide.

On the side of Rhea, this presents a nice opportunity that we should grab, but no reason to wade into that discussion alone. Otto will be ecstatic at the chance to cut off one possible venue for Daemon to get power and support from somewhere.

[X] [Rhea] Promise that you will bring up the matter with some people. Speak with Lady Arryn yourself and present Rhea as potential ally for her. Speak with Otto before approaching your father.

As for Jeyne, I start by my reasons for approaching her.

[X] [Jeyne] "I wanted to see what it is like to dance with a woman, and perhaps make a friend who understands."

Jeyne should be natural ally for us and as a Lady Paramount could be a very powerful one.

I know you don't like us Otto but you should see this as an opportunity to destroy a potential future power base for Daemon.

Jeyne, we are saving ourselves for Alicent Marriage.

No one else is going to vote for it for a variety of good and valid reasons, but gay Seven Kingdoms Polycule is the only in character option for a Rhaenyra quest on SV honestly. plz ignore the fact we chose the hopless romantic option this is a bit.

Indeed, oof. Not our brightest moment, mayhaps. At this point if Rhaenyra is interested in girls, and Laenor goes on to be also obviously batting for the other team, I wonder if that's the perfect possible lavender marriage or the most pointless one in history ever.

Something like this is why I didn't want to dance with Jeyne Arryn. We are working hard to cultivate somewhat good relationships with other people and then do something that pisses them off.

Didn't Rhaenyra do a lot of stupid decisions that fucked her over and pissed other people off? We still need a husband to have legitimate children with (something Laemor probably won't give us) and have somewhat of a good marriage with.

Sure, if we can get someone more open-headed that would be fine with us having Alicent as a paramour then its fine and dandy... but who the fuck in Westeros is willing to get cockblocked by a woman?! Name anyone besides Laenor.

On another note, we help annule Daemon's marriage and make it clear to him that it was because of us.

I should note this is not a massive hit, like the dance didn't even stop. It's just something people noticed and some took issue with for various reasons.

I look out upon the questers gathered and all I see are cowards, cowards one and all. Who cares the realm feels slightly uncomphy at two woman dancing, it's not like it's any worse than the everything else going on with this Rhaenyra.

Besides we haven't even really done anything to be mad about we could though, vote for Jeyne romance you cowards, people want a lord paramount partner until it's actually offered to us.

Okay, sorry for my outburst then. It was stupid of me.

I know our Rhaenyra is defiant, but I just hope we can do some things more discreetly in the future.

Also, dancing with Jeyne Arryn can be forgiven as Rhaenyra is still young.

So sorry for overreacting.

I can't help but think my plan might have gone over better much better with the lords and ladies present, whilst upping Jeyne opinion of us.
