I don't know. I feel both are equally likely. The guy running the Library in Ulthuan likes humans after all, and Ulthuan probably rightfully regard the idea of the Empire as being a threat as laughable.

I disagree. We're going to go to Naggarithe (hope I have written that right) to kill Druuchi. From that to getting the favor to copy the magical corpus of the Hoeth Library (which is another different kingdom all together) to add to our own seems extremely unlikely.

Sure. But Nagarythe also probably has fuck all spare resources like a suit of Ithilmar to spare. It's called the Shadowlands for a reason, and it's not because it's a thriving center of industry and trade.

I know a lot of people in the thread seem to want to do that, but I've been thinking about it. Why should I vote for a plan to have Mathilde randomly run off to a foreign country to fight in a war? Sure the enemy she'd be fighting is evil, but there are a lot of evils in the world. What would this actually accomplish?

It's basically the Taken monologue. They don't have money, but they've spent a long career acquiring a very particular set of skills.

Among the various nations that the Empire is reasonably friendly with, there probably isn't anyone better to learn the arts of intrigue. I think we'll get some sort of new skill out of it. Or even a spell or two, depending.

Most people are pretty sure that the Arhain of Nagarythe are its Shadow Weavers, who are famous for using Ulgu. The Ambassador compared them to Saphery's magic-users. The Colleges of Magic pretty much have only really seen the Sapherian tradition, with some glimpses into Cothique's. It means a chance to learn some shadow magic from a tradition that the Colleges of Magic have pretty much no knowledge of. Boney could have implied that is the correct intepretation, but the comment was rather vague so I am not saying it for certain.

At minimum I'm positive there will be at least a few insights into how they wield magic.

since Teclis is pretty much the only lens the College has for knowing anything about Ulthuani magical traditions.
Huh. So... us mentioning at the next Ulgu Lord Magister Interdimensional Knitting Circle that we've got an open invitation to hang out with the Arhain of Nagarythe for a season is going to be as 'wtf' as some of Mathildes other exploits?
It'd get some raised eyebrows.

I don't think we'll get general Intrigue skills, but we'll certainly get Druchii skills. The Shadow Warriors seem like prime candidates for overspecialization in killing Druchii specifically.

So the thread is basically viewing this as a highly dangerous self-improvement action? If I could draw an analogy, like voting to try to Gild body parts if we were playing a gold wizard?

I don't think quite that risky.

(Granted, given how much drama the dice often like, knock on wood and all that)

Mathilde is quite experienced and skilled. If she was the same person she was when she received the offer, I might agree with you, but I don't think this is substantially more dangerous than other things she has done.

How far up or down an apprenticeship line does something like that travel? Like, if Mathilde is still alive in a hundred years, and Eike's apprentice's apprentice's apprentice screws up, does that somewhat blowback on Mathilde? Or the other way, does a master three generations back in the line of teachers affect the reputation of the latest apprentice?

Apprentices screwing up in minor ways is the point of apprentices. But for a suitably serious screwup, that doesn't travel through the apprenticeship line directly, it's a matter of the Guild. Someone being a Master means they've been tested by their Guild and given a stamp of approval, so if their apprentice screws up majorly and they don't rectify it, that becomes a failure on the Guild's part. So in that scenario the blowback on Mathilde is that she's a member of a Guild that has just had its good name sullied. The proper response at that point would be for Mathilde to go out and finger out what the fuck is going on, even if she didn't have an indirect connection to the situation. One of the reasons even unscrupulous Dwarves take matters of Guild reputation extremely seriously is that if they make enough of a mess, literally dozens of extremely angry, extremely skilled, extremely old Dwarves will swarm in from all directions.

Consider how it would be literally impossible for Thorek to come from a Karak further from Karag Dum but he still considers matters of Runesmithing there to be extremely his business.

But yes, someone having a significant figure in your apprenticeship 'lineage' is something to boast about.

Pretty much yea, We reached to point in intrigue we either need long ass time and experience to improve or crib some notes from somebody who does have that experience and Empire is fresh out of thousand year old Ulgu ninjas.

Personally I want a break from Waystone actions and to go on an adventure.
