If Ren Ren acts as a beacon, that does not mean she fights alone. She can choose the best defensible location, rally the White Plumes and noble retinues for an organised and concentrated defence where waves of unorganised enemies can be broken upon them. We could see Xia Lin and GG do real heroic actions and cover themselves in glory. This would also be a great coming together for the whole ES since feelings from such events linger for a long time. Vote for the defining moment of the summit to be epic.
The other option is not even that much safer and is much more bland in my opinion.

Yeah, we don't actually know about anything noteworthy having happened before a fully adult Shenhua saccharinely saved Linqin from the abuse she suffered for all her life, right after having coincidentally turned herself into someone tailor-made to bring suffering to everyone responsible. I just feel like both characters get much cooler if there was stuff before that point and Linqin just kinda deserves to have an active role somewhere.

There's a big time gap between Shenhua as a student and that. I think their relationship almost certainly predates Shenhua saving her, sure, but there's a big difference between that being true and it happening when Shenhua was a student. Like, very plausibly decades of difference.

She's still taking pressure off of the whole in this option, just much much more reservedly.
Ultimately, my choice is
