Springtime of Nations II: A European Republic Quest

[X] Case Arquebus

I think a push on Austria is generally good but this makes a better use of the marinewehr and I think it's a more reasonable ask on our allied forces than having them make a full push into Austria (we know that went very poorly for Italy OTL).

It is time for the twenty-seventh Battle of the Iszonso!

It doesn't, you still need to occupy the place. Which, granted, can be done with lower-echelon troops, but lower-echelon troops can also hold a trench line on what will necessarily be a tertiary front in any circumstance.
That's not true though? There is a hell of a difference between defending a trenchline in bad territory or having to prevent a naval invasion in 1896. Jutland is a staging area that will bind a ton of troops if we don't knock it out early.

My main fear with Case Arquebus is that it doesn't seem to have a clear goal in mind other than 'win some battles' and putting pressure on a very, very wide set of fronts. Sure, maybe we could win a bunch, but does this have strategic coherence? Would it lead somewhere useful?

That's why I like Case Eagle - it has a clear, definite goal, and even if it runs into problems it can scale back or redirect that goal as needed.
Personally I would have prefered Hussar because it focuses on the best and most attainable objectives that would have brought us into the best position for a later spring offensive. Closing down Jutland and getting to fight a Russian counter-offensive in Poland and possibly raising Polish auxiliaries.

Arquebus works too though because it uses our more rapid mobilization speed to make opportunistic gains. Which is imho not as good as a focused punch but defensible considering how soon campaigning season will end for us.

It will be interesting if the Russians will attempt a Winter Offensive.

so we are stuck between many shitty choices then.

either we not attack austria(and resign ourselves to a meat grinder later on), we go nuts on austria and leave the russians on our doorstep while they kill the polish on their backlines, or we timidly advance everywhere avoiding hardpoints which will be a massive headache in the coming months.

afrter careful consideration, i think arquebus comes on top. The austrians are yet to fully mobilize so they shouldnt be as stiff as a resistance that an all fronts push coudnt contest fully.

however, my choice is one of cold calculus, by invading jutland now, we effectively mitigate the scandinavian threat atleast by 6 months where they have to reroute their army to fight through russia and have bad supply(or a very easily sunk supply cordon).we also consequently have it in our posession to take at the end of the war(which is critical for our peace after as once the russian bear is fully mobilized, we wont be able to divert resources for a jutland campaign). by also taking polish territory, we protect our home industry and allow for continued production of war material uninterruptedly and allows us to extend our supply links to better be able to create russian offensives in the future. by taking the austian frontier, we will make it really hard for the austrians to push us off, as well as being in a very good position to invade their industrial heartland.

how the war evolves will depend heavily on the italian effort in their front and how much polish/bohemian partisan support we actually have.( if the poles manage to blow up russian railways and delay them for an extra week or make it so the soldiers arrive but with no artillery shells, we will be able to contest the russians much more effectively (however this will come at incredible expense to said poles)).

we need to make overtures to the hungarians, serbs, croats, bosnians, romanians, slovaks ASAP, in order to secure their independence so that the austrians are putting out as many fires as they are fighting against us. the reach for the stars goal would be a general strike but thats unfeasable.

sidenote, do we know anything about volunteer/international divisions? what is the food security for the enemy nations like(specifically scandi and austria)?

Changing my vote. Russia can always raise a second army, but quickly destroying the first one ought to scare everyone else. I am essentially hoping that this will prove advantageous as a "shock and awe" strategy. If we get very lucky we might even spook the scandis into an early peace.

Be more mindful of your word choice, please.
sorry i didnt mean any disrespect, i meant how this choice is no longer about not getting bonuses but rather our choices have really drastic drawbacks so anyone that says how x is the obvious choice is ridiculous.
im sorry if i offended you, even if ideologically i find myself in a minority in this quest, i can absolutely say that the quest quality is top notch.

To ruminate on my own logic a bit here, I eliminated Case Eagle from consideration for two reasons: one, I really don't think we want a second front in Jutland. Occupying it is vital for protecting Hamburg and the canal, and it forces Scandinavian troops to attempt naval landings, which our navy is designed to contest from the ground up. Two, I'm on the record repeatedly for believing that just smashing Vienna isn't enough to capitulate the Habsburgs. We're also starting in October and the last thing I want is to be besieging an enemy capital over the entire winter (although it'd potentially be a good opportunity for a Vienna Commune).

Meanwhile, Hussar and Arquebus are both solid because they secure our flank and disrupt Russian mobilization - if we can prevent them concentrating forces in Poland before winter shuts down their transport we'll be in a great position in spring. I'd honestly have voted for Hussar for the defeat-in-detail strategy, but that was obviously not going to win, and in any case, overextending ourselves in Poland in late fall is risky.

While I'd love to give the Austrians a swift kick between the legs, Jutland needs to be addressed. If there were a plan to take Jutland and divert our offensive striking power to Austria, I would vote for it in a heartbeat. But alas.

There was something in a previous chapter... Ha! Found it:
Instead, militarist efforts are redirected toward the ever-popular field of preparedness. The Civil War Report, as it is known to the public, is implemented in full along with an attendant increase in funding for Landwehr training and equipment. Notably, this marks the first military budget expansion where expenditures on shovels and other engineering tools outpace those on rifles and cannons. The envisioned Landwehr of the future is not just a mobile fighting force, but also a well-supplied force that digs into a battlefield and simply cannot be dislodged.

So let's play to our strengths!
