We may not want to rule out presenting Minako's secret identity out of nebulous fear of "something" happening as a result. Especially without actual confirmation of all the baggage being attached to the situation based on the assumption that there's a fully realized bunch of Kamen Rider villains lurking behind her dad.

I'm more referring to...can we trust her parents in general. Not just nebulous threat of evil, but can we reach a point where Minako will feel safe doing so?

If we find evidence of magical or mental tampering that we can't safely handle, we can't trust them. If Minako's parents turn out to be bad, in whatever form that may take, we can't trust them.

I'm saying let's leave the Senshi reveal to later, when we have a better grasp on the situation.

The only option I see left is to dazzle the Ainos with starpower. Sailor Moon is a celebrity, a superhero!
If this is what we need in order to get in the door... then it's probably also a recipe for Mama Aino to spout off about it in public.

If we can't get in with high DIP and a police officer... then we need to consider another tack.

(I'm reminded of a sceen in the King's Speech when the wife of King Geroge's speech therapist finds out that the King is in her house. ..."Will His Majesty be staying for supper?" The director did a good job of communicating the starstruck-ness of the scenario.
Sir Frederick Evans: "Ah, memories..."

So, Sailor Moon's at our door? Well show her in! Sailor Moon is interested in Minako... we might get defensive behavior where most people (including Usagi) would get thrown out and possibly told not to return.
It is also conspicuously impossible for them to force Sailor Moon to leave, since she can teleport and any physical force capable of expelling her from the building against her will would probably bring the house down around their ears.

So that's my thoughts on this. While it will be bad in the short term, I kinda want the Ainos to be (human) monsters so we can cut them off and tell Minako that she can do better. Because she absolutely can - she has us (Usagi and the Senshi).
On the other hand, getting the Ainos to be better people would, itself, be a victory that frankly I think is more in line with the themes of Sailor Moon.

The idea that you can redeem bad people who aren't actually threatening you, instead of casually obliterating them or casting them out of your life forever, is... well, it sometimes has some friction with SV culture in some ways. I think that happens... for reasons I'm going to not go into at the moment. But I think it's an idea worth holding onto on a personal level, and Sailor Moon lends itself to that.

That's very likely to leave us in an impasse where the Ainos don't know what this girl who's allegedly their long-missing daughter and her companions are up to, refuse to show us much respect or accept our right to talk to them and force them towards the kind of conclusions we desire, and then we decide that they are "bad" and can never be trusted. Because they, in turn, didn't extend unlimited trust to someone who offered no bona fides and no explanation for what the hell happened or where their daughter's been for the past 12-18 months.

I mean, I'd like to think I'd never act the way they have, but I'd sure as hell be suspicious and worried in their position, and particularly suspicious and worried about anyone who was being extremely vague about what had happened to Minako.

The problem is that pretending to be a police officer is openly fraudulent.

Unless you mean "bring along an actual police officer," in which case we need to talk to @Lunaryon about bringing Superintendent Sakurada over.

I wonder if Moon Healing Escalation can break the compulsion Artemis put on her. I'd expect that to work.

I'm going to start with something, and we can see if we can figure out some refinement.

[X][Aino] Go as Usagi. Say that Minako is currently staying with us for now, and we want to hear the parent's side of the story. If we are refused at the door, threaten to go to the police to report them for child abandonment.

At this point, this is not the "investigate for SHOCKER connections" talk. This may not even be the "force the Ainos to take their daughter back" talk. This is the "will it be good for Minako to get back with her parents" talk. This is just to get our foot in the door and find out what we're dealing with.

The second one, with Sakurada.

And... the Escalation thing actually sounds like a good idea.

[X][Aino] As Usagi, call the police. Ask for the detective working the Aino runaway case and say that you have a tip. Ask to meet them at the Crystal Millenium building. Have Minako share her side of the story, including her home life prior to running away and what her parents did when she tried to return home. Break the obligation on Superintendent Sakurada. Then with the Superintendent in tow, go to the Ainos.

This way we come to Minako's parents with a badge. That gets us in. Hopefully Usagi's high DIP will do the rest.

I like the three options that have been proposed so far. The direct, the roundabout, and the badge. Not sure which to vote for.

I'm wondering why we might involve the detective here...We could skip that and go straight to Sakurada as Moon.

Skip the whole tip bit, just call as Moon for "an important discussion about an ongoing case", and we can get Sakurada down to the Millennium building within thirty minutes.

Usagi stares up at her friend for a moment, leaning forward in her seat. She can feel a subtle energy flickering in her eyes. And that energy's enough to shatter whatever control over herself that Minako is struggling to keep. Minako's face reddens again before she looks away from Usagi.

I can't tell if Usagi actually channeled some form of magic through her eyes or if she's just making eyes at Minako.

Because if today has taught her anything, it is that sometimes she might just need to step up and be the Princess for Minako.
Usagi wouldn't mind being called a Mistress by someone some day after all.

:thonk:

I was trying to avoid Sailor Moon's involvement here. And Usagi doesn't know Sakurada herself. I expect the Aino case is a cold case now, but asking to speak with the detective originally investigating the case wouldn't be out of place, especially if we have a tip.

I understand not wanting to involve Moon when meeting her parents...but why not at all? I think that's just a little unnecessary, and we're not guaranteed to get Sakurada's involvement that way.

It'd be very easy to have Moon make the call, say a girl (Usagi) came in with a tip (or with Minako herself), and leave it at that.

Well, compartmentalization. The obligation of a secret identity is to keep it, and that requires awareness of who does what. Sailor Moon could grease a lot of wheels, but as a superhero always assume people are watching you. You walking across the street is blasé. Superhero you walking across the street is news worthy, even if that news is three inches on page 11A of the newspaper.

Usagi doesn't know who Superintendent Sakurada is. Usagi just know that Mina's parents won't let her in, and that as a girl Usagi has not more power than Minako. And Sailor Moon is, as others pointed out, showing up with a tank pointed in your direction. So we need to go to the police. At the moment, this is less a 'alien monster is invading' problem and more of a potential 'I'm getting vibes of potential child abuse' here. As others pointed out, we're not a cop, so lets leave this to the cops.

Love a good Shadowjack reference! :D

Girls can love girls. Girls can love boys. Boys can love boys. Boys can love girls.

More experimentation is required.

H-how lewd! 😳😳 But yes. 😈

[ ][Aino] How do you approach the Aino family?
The puzzle is this:

How do you, a stranger, ask someone about something that they (probably) want to keep secret (to avoid shame)?
"Hi, I'm here to talk about your car's extended warranty—"

So I see two routes we can take with our Badge% Speedrun

[ ][Aino] As Usagi, call the police.

[ ][Aino] As Sailor Moon, contact the Superintendent, let her know your civilian identity, break the geas if possible. Confront the Ainos about Minako crashing on your couch, and that you want to help Minako mend bridges, but you want to hear their side of the story, as a concerned friend. The Superintendent is there because she has the authority to sweep this under the rug if things can be handled amicably, but is also acting as Usagi's (visible) muscle.

Usagi doesn't know who Superintendent Sakurada is.
Sailor Moon has Sakurada's phone number. She doesn't have to walk across the street or whatever.

Pushing this onto the cops without calling Sakurada is a. needlessly complicated, but more importantly b. dangerously unpredictable. Minako can not explain where she's been for the last year to a regular cop, and there is therefore no assurance that a regular cop will side with us against her parents. The Japanese legal system is really, really invested in children being the property of their parents, to the detriment of those children. There is no assurance at all that Officer Rando will be acting in anything resembling Minako's interest.

It's also, most importantly, c. not what this vote is about. We already voted to personally confront Minako's parents as Usagi. Usagi is standing at their front door. We are being asked what Usagi does after she knocks. Turning around and calling the cops at this point would be a really ridiculous misuse of the "personally confront the Ainos" action.

[X][Aino] Go as Usagi. Say that Minako is currently staying with us for now, and we want to hear the parent's side of the story. If we are refused at the door, threaten to go to the police to report them for child abandonment.

[X][Aino] ...threaten to go to the police to report them for child abandonment.

Ainos: Are you trying to blackmail me?
Alternatively: *Angry* Who are you to threaten me, girl?

Just to ask if this is a wise course of action.

Edit: I also didn't know Usagi had Sakurada's number.

I had forgotten that she had her number, too.

But I think having a police officer there as a neutral(ish) party should work, though we might need to leave Sakurada outside rather than bring her in for the discussion

The alternative being to do that without threatening, or giving them an option to avoid it?

"Yes. I am threatening you. Let me in."

My personal preference would be to just not let them shut us out, they literally can't slam the door hard enough to hurt Usagi's hand, but Silverking wrote a vote and I didn't want to.

[X][Aino] The Blonde and the Badge
Usagi calls Sakurada to act as her backup/muscle/whatever while confronting the Ainos over how worried everyone is for Minako. Go full good cop bad cop as a last resort.

I don't like the current plan due to it placing the blame squarely on Minako's parents, I think that that should be the nuclear option.

I kind of want to do a face saving maneuver, because cornering them and repairing the relationship through coercion is unlikely to go well, even if it causes them to take Minako in again. We should probably be opening with the magical, because that might give them a way to reclaim a part of their social face.

[X][Aino] Plan Diplomacy is about saving their face.
-[X] Prepare by checking someone someone who is in the know is on call at The Crystal Millennium otherwise send Jupiter to be on call.
-[X] See if one of the Mao, and especially Artemis is on available to accompany you somewhere today. A Mao opening the conversation will hopefully reduce the chances of getting a door in your face.
-[X] Then go to the parents with Minako and a The Crystal Millennium business card to make it clear that Minako's absence had been due to magical stuff that really shouldn't be talked about out in the open.
-[X] Be clear that it's Usagi and not Sailor Moon, because Sailor Moon would cause an enormous spotlight on a delicate case and not because the Senshi aren't willing to do this in person.
-[X] Let the conversation flow from there.

EDIT: Forgot the [Aino] tag

Ok, so I need to ask this...

Lunaryon, is this preemptive of the scene? I.e, does the Plan allow us for prep, or are we at the door already and that's our lot?
