Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

[X] Plan Who are you again?
-[X] Take out Molly's cell phone and start recording video, making sure to get a clear shot of their faces.
-[X] Ask for each of them to properly show their badges instead of flashing them, so that you can see they're real and have a lawyer speak to them
-[X] Ask for a physical copy of the arrest warrant
-[X] If at any point they become evasive threaten to call the police right then and there and have them sort it out.
—[X] if they keep evading attempt to call the police and claim some people saying they're feds are trying to arrest a friend of ours, but won't provide <insert whatever they're evasive on here>
-[X] Use excellency on the direct requests, and being convincing over the phone if we need to call the cops

If they attack then we're free to beat the shit out of them, but if they're legit even if the warrant isn't we need other witnesses if we don't want to get burned.
clippy can record even when faced down on a table.

[X] Explain that Harry has been with you all day (Charisma+Empathy can use Excellency)
-[X] Ask for arrest warrant.
--[X] Have Clippy call FBI and check their identity.
---[X] Call Murphy

I will point out we have no way to verify if a warrant is real or fake. Though we could always snap a picture of it.
No you cannot verify if a warrant is real or a very good forgery.
But you can identify bad forgeries.
And some people who dont even attempt to show up with a warrant, because they forgot, or they dont have the experience

I mean, federal warrant has to be signed by a federal judge. Dresden has presumably seen some, but how many crooks have?
If you have a FBI agent presenting a state court warrant for a federal crime.....well, thats a gimme.
Low hanging fruit.

can we please include a crown question as that can get straight down to answers we need now and not later. Preferably the whys and hows of this happening. Also I'll note straight up shapeshifting is rare next to non existent for practitioners at least the one council member who has it jim butcher has even noted its not actually something you can learn just with time and practice and some talent like that senior council members healing.

The FBI has special investigative jurisdiction to investigate violations of state law in limited circumstances, specifically felony killings of state law enforcement officers (28 U.S.C. § 540)"
I quote your link:
The FBI has special investigative jurisdiction to investigate violations of state law in limited circumstances, specifically felony killings of state law enforcement officers (28 U.S.C. § 540), violent crimes against interstate travelers (28 U.S.C. § 540A0), and serial killers (28 U.S.C. §540B). A request by an appropriate state official is required before the FBI has authority to investigate these matters. In addition, Title 28, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 0.85, outlines the investigative and other responsibilities of the FBI, including the collection of fingerprint cards and identification records; the training of state and local law enforcement officials at the FBI National Academy; and the operation of the National Crime Information Center and the FBI Laboratory.
Quoting the section at law:
The Attorney General and the Federal Bureau of Investigation may investigate felonious killings of officials and employees of a State or political subdivision thereof while engaged in or on account of the performance of official duties relating to the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of an offense against the criminal laws of a State or political subdivision, when such investigation is requested by the head of the agency employing the official or employee killed, and under such guidelines as the Attorney General or his designee may establish.
Literally requires the signoff of the agency head, in this case the head of the Chicago Police Department where Greene works.
Which is a problem.

If they've actually fabricated all the evidence to get to this point, fabricating some sort of link with his wife is not going to be an issue on top of it. If all this is is some goon, the possibility of being the former is enough that it works.
The more people something requires the harder it is to make it look credible.

You cant just fabricate a federal investigation at short notice. At least, if you had the pull for that, you wouldnt be half-assing this whole thing; you'd have roused all law enforcement, and just sent in a FBI/CPD team into the copkiller's home with instructions about the suspect being known to be armed and dangerous and having a huge dog.

We could probably work a Crown question into the plan, too. It would be better to do it now, when the information we learn could influence our decisions on how we react to the men, rather than afterward, when ours and Harry's options will be much more limited. Things are going to be much more complicated if we let them take Harry out of his apartment in handcuffs.
I guess, but the thing is any situation where these guys are real officers is automatically complicated.

Law enforcement will not go "my bad, let's call it even" over resisting s dirty arrest. The expectation is that you cooperate and prove it in court, whatever the practicalities are.

Unless they're complete fakes the only option that doesn't end with both of us running from the law is getting Harry a lawyer and sticking around to protect from direct follow ups.

If they're fakes then recording them should make them react.
clippy can record even when faced down on a table.
The point isn't the recording necessarily, it's to provoke a reaction.

If these guys are fake, or doing something against procedure even, then a video is the sort of thing that could send them to federal prison or cost them their jobs.

Getting them to attack us in order to stop the recording is the legal protection we need to keep ourselves out of prison.

There's also the matter of the charges they're opening themselves to.

Forging federal documents of any kind is a crime, in addition to carrying them around, giving them to people, and presenting them for some use. Faking a warrant is a separate slew of crimes in top of that.

They tabulate these crimes this way so that when the feds are angry they can hit you with a dozen charges for one incident to pile on the punishment.

A video of them holding a fake warrant could be worth a decade of their lives or more on top of whatever else they're doing.

Could you be convinced to use the crown to figure out all of the exact details of why their here? I know it costs us it gets through a lot and gives us information for later. Also if it comes down to combat it'd be nice to just know and be sure of all the details.

What of license plate lookup?
These dudes drove here in a car, and license plates are public records; official FBI vehicles come with govt agency ownership tags.
I know we can do internet lookup now, and I think it was accessible back in 2006, but thats a QM ruling.

I am pretty sure that license plate lookup did not exist in 2005. I mean for one thing good camera phones were just becoming ubiquitous as was fast internet on phones. Without those two things you would not be able to get as much off being able to photograph a police car and look up its number

That said badge numbers were certainly public including on line.

bronze if not edited I might edit the plan to ask what are the exact reasons for why their here. Which should if its a frame job on their part tell us why their here, who did the framing, is the video evidence existent and if yes how it was faked, and their personal reasoning for being here.

It costs us essence, but I suppose we've got a decently full tank.

I'm hoping that question is good enough to get both a bit of info on if they're real cops and if they've been manipulated or not.

@DragonParadox is this too vague a question to get useful results?
We could use the crown I suppose.

We definetly can't spot even a shoddy forgery.
Yeah, but if pressed them further if they're fakes. Doing on camera is also not free for them.

If they didn't make one or try to evade letting us see it then we have an excuse to get the cops involved.

More eyes are good for us here, because it makes it harder to drag Dresden away to never be seen again and for them to make stuff up about us.

If they're legit agents we might also get lucky and cause a jurisdictional pissing match.

Supposing these guys are real agents and they have a real warrant then getting the cops on scene is almost certainly going to cause a shit show. This is super irregular and involves the death of a police officer, the feds claiming jurisdiction wouldn't be popular.

can you rephrase the question to why their here cause it gets us details why they are specifically here themselves and the details on who and how it got set up.

Let's just ask the crown… we can't lose here either way… if they're fake they get what's coming for them, if they are legit let's just let them do their job and if necessary use our magical girl powers to prove his innocence. If we even need to do that much. I mean Harry can seemingly deal with this on his own for now…

@Goldfish I saw you proxy vote, so you might want to check that you like the other version of the plan.

I thought about that, but what I really want to know right now is if they're real officers.

It almost doesn't matter if they're mind controlled or dirty/blackmailed. Resisting arrest and assaulting an officer are still crimes even if they're in the wrong.

It feels like a shame to not go for additional information though, which is why I phrased it that way.

I'm going we'll get a snippet showing whoever did this either ordering goons, contacting their moles in the FBI, or planting evidence to get Harry legitimately arrested.

We'd get some context and awareness of if touching these guys will get us out behind bars, or at very least on the department's shit list.

also honestly why wouldn't you use the crown? we'd save an essence any situation where that 1 essence makes a difference isn't gonna happen today.

[X] Plan Who are you again? Crowned Edition

Wait, how many essence are we at right now? I don't think we took a toxic bath to fill up after investigating that guy, and we were pretty free with excellencies then, so I want to be sure we have enough essence in reserve before using it on the crown, otherwise I might change my vote.

Not entirely happy with this. In order, I would suggest:
  • Crown of Eyes: Loyalties.
  • Request identification, and copy of arrest warrant if available.
  • Key into phone instructions onehanded to record everything, and crosscheck names, photos, badge numbers and car license numbers as the alleged officers show them to you.
  • Tell Harry to shut up until his lawyer shows up.
  • Call Murphy first, then Dad for a lawyer.
  • Follow car to FBI building to prevent any detours or foulplay.

Actual vote later.
If the cops can't find you then this sort of thing might be viable. If they're already arresting you then slipping off is its own slew of crimes they will go after you for.
If they are the cops. If they arent dirty.

Remember when I said that Dresden has had to deal with dirty Feds before, as well as decent ones?
Remember how any charges around the events of Full Moon simply vanished because FBI serial killers turned out to be something noone wanted to pursue?

Remember, this is Chicago. City has a rep for a reason.

We've had digital traffic cameras since the 1990s for traffic offenses and toll roads. Reading license plates is easy.

Anyway, I think we are talking at cross purposes. No need for photos here.
Its a matter of reading the license plate, seeing the state where its issued, then entering the license number, car make and color at the relevant DMV website to get vehicle ownership records.

Nothing more complicated than entering a string of letters and numbers into a website.
Its a QM judgement if DMV records are online in 2006; I believe they were based on my experience, but I cant swear to it.
At least not in the Dresdenverse.

you going to make a plan? also when you say no pics I still want to record them.

Yes.
And Clippy is already recording.
only if we tell them too though right? Like sure its a smart idea I've no idea if they have enough agency yet to decide to record without us telling them too? Then again always recording is probably a great idea since they can delete things as fast as they want and storage limits probably isn't a thing for our demon.

I don't really see a difference in outcome then, though that's not what I'd assume the answer to that question is. I'd default to assuming it asks after personal motives, which wouldn't tell us much about the true person behind in more than a few circumstances.

For example, if they're contractors doing it for money, or if they're real officers doing it because they got legitimate orders to do so. Clearly something happened past that point, but I'm not sure we'd see it.

That said; I wouldn't take any issue with it if you want to copy the plan, swap out the question, and name it something else. For whatever that's worth.

9. One crown use and a maximum theoretical excellency spend of around 3 for that plan, and then only if the socials go really poorly.

So if a fight broke out worse case we'd still have 5 essence to spend.

I don't see loyalties as being that much more useful a question.

They definitely have to have a copy of the warrant on them, and show it to you at request when making an arrest using one. So I don't see a difference between this and what I've already posted.

The others are good points, I'll post a new version.
