Because it's a finishing attack, duh.
:p

Thematically, yes- the general pattern (and of much of the magical girl content that descended from it) is for Usagi's backup dancers to beat the monster into a pulp so Usagi can use her finishing attack spell on said monster.

But we know our version of the story doesn't enforce that narrative convention. There is nothing stopping Sailor Jupiter or Sailor Mars from obliterating the monster of the week with their highly energetic magical attacks. Or Sailor Mercury from beating said monster of the week to death with her goddamn princess wand if necessary.

So we have to stop and think: what logical reason would there be for Usagi to not use her "finishing" spell to end the battle in one shot before it's even had time to begin properly, smile, say "that was over real quick!" and cut to the ending credits early?

Obvious answers mostly revolve around the finishing spell having a considerable windup time, being ineffective against a target whose capacity to resist is undiminished, or being kind of tiring to cast more than once, so you want to make sure that if you take the shot with it, you're not going to immediately have to keep fighting and potentially taking the shot over and over.

Actually we have 2 Senshi in need of a living space. So that would be nice to have a house for. We just need some land for it, thankfully land should be cheaper than now.
The main problem is that having a house suddenly appear just about anywhere in Tokyo but the Night Market is going to raise questions. Especially since the thing weighs at least a few hundred tons. We're not going to be able to easily or unobtrusively drop it into place.

So it's not a very secure or comfortable location for Makoto or Minako to live in their civilian identities as unaccompanied minors, because people will be sniffing around wondering why a house was just dropped there by a team of superheroines.

So don't have it in Tokyo, have it in a forest in say, Hokkaido. Use teleporting to deal with any kind of issues.

Chicken house and shoes
Look. Hear me out. Ignore that this is a five minute doodle with poorly drawn shoes...

Are you really going to deny our chicken house son a parent's love??? His previous father only saw him as an object. How can we just hand over custody without even trying?

[X] Plan Drive me closer, I want to hit them with my kanebo!

So don't have it in Tokyo, have it in a forest in say, Hokkaido. Use teleporting to deal with any kind of issues.
Potential issues that might arise with this plan- not to say they all will arise, but they could.

1) How do we deliver the house to Hokkaido (or any other hypothetical remote location) without attracting a ton of attention? It weighs so much it took 5-7 Senshi just to lift the thing. Given that Usagi was "deadlift an excavator" strong even assuming minimal physical enhancement since that time, this implies that it's too heavy to airlift. Options for moving it include big-ass flatbed trucks and teleportation. The former will attract considerable attention. The latter relies on us being able to teleport with hundreds of tons of cargo in tow, which is not a given; we've never tried it before.

2) My understanding is that most of the Senshi are still a bit limited in the 'teleport' department- Ami and Usagi are best at it for now, but Usagi's reliant on familiarity with her destination and Ami's leaning on the Mercury Computer heavily. If we're teleporting to an area we aren't familiar with, how do we know we're teleporting the house into a place where there won't be complications?

3) I haven't brought this up before, but if Faust has a tracking beacon on the chicken house, us taking it could escalate our problems significantly (say, by enabling Faust to learn our secret identities through covert observation that bypasses the glamour because he'd be in a position to watch us transform). Faust stealing the house back would be annoying, but unlikely to be a game-altering disaster as long as he doesn't do too much damage in the process. Us using the house as a mobile base while Faust can still spy on it would be very bad.

I wish there was an option to get the "key" to the devil's Demise, and not the actual house. Something like the key to the safe the stone from the scone is eventually put into. MCAT gets to retain the house, but can't reawaken it and drive it off without talking to us first, and/or have us on hand to subdue it again should things go sideways.

So in my mind the Wand of Washing is good for improving perception on magic and having a commercial product to sell.
That's what I said! I even have a Plan that has it as part of the loot I want. Sadly, Houseless Foundation is more likely to win than my Plan.
[X] Plan Fostering Favors without Favoring Faust's Finery
[X][Loot] A few random magical books [COSTS 2 POINTS]
[X][Loot] Favor [COSTS 3 POINTS]
[X][Loot] Shattered Stone Shishi Statue [COSTS 0 POINTS]
[X][Loot] That Sword [COSTS 2 POINTS] Better than the Kanabō for Uranus.
[?][Loot] Wand of Washing | I know it's likely 1 point, but I'm sure we could argue that a dishwashing wand can be given to us for free to use in classroom demonstrations on why Magic Isn't All That Different.
@Lunaryon, CAN I argue for the Wand of Washing to be free so the above plan is viable?

And if people are really that set on the alchemy reagents that we don't know how to use, I'd be fine with a Plan that swaps them out for That Sword, but the books and wand are too good to pass up when we're helping muggles become magicals, and I'm not about to pass up a favor either.

Part of me wonders if we could just place the house bit into the forest behind the temple where Rei lives and just claim it has always been there.

Alright, @Valmond, @Chaosmancer, you have, in my opinion at least, now killed yet another topic. Please stop. Yes, both of you have valid points. No, I do not want to spend the next three days watching this continually escalate until the original topic is lost to the ages in yet another pointless flame war. And please none of the last post sniping where you seem to think you're graciously dropping the topic, but want to send of just a few more paragraphs of argument, or had a post half written and 'don't want to waste it'. It's incredibly rude.

I was pretty much done. I didn't intend to "kill" anything. I was just trying to explain my point. I'm sorry you feel like it was becoming some sort of flame war.

Lunaryon just teased a picture of Venus' Castle. What kinds of fallout might there be from some space probes getting photos of it? Will people associate it with the weird stuff going on in the world, get excited about aliens, wonder how in the world a city-sized castle avoided notice this long? Might other spaceborne relics start popping out of their hiding places as the Senshi continue to grow and poke things?

Well, just as likely the Moon Castle is going to catch people's eyes, but proof of structures in space? Of course some people are going to start saying Aliens started magic or that magic isn't real and it is all sci-fi technology. But a City-Sized castle avoiding notice isn't actually that that impressive if you stop and think about it.

Here is a picture of Earth. How easy is it to spot New York City? Or Rio de Janeiro? Or ANY city

We are used to thinking of Cities as Big, but once you go Planetary... they are very small. Combine that with the trickiness of Venus being harder to look at without looking at the Sun, and the fact that the Castle until recently was dark, and it isn't too surprising to us.

Naru just had a big thing happen because she kept a promise. What kind of effects might that have on her deific maturation process? She should definitely tell her mom at least some of this soon, but should she dump it all at once, or just start with 'Usagi's friendgroup (which I am a part of), is secretly a witch coven.'?

I'm still not sure why people are treating Naru like a Goddess. It's innaccurate because she is the being that creates Genus Loci, not one herself. She isn't maturing as a Deity, she is maturing as the All-Mother. We are just assuming that Deity is "sort of close enough" when talking to people like Ame-no-Mizumi because we didn't want to tell her we are the All-Mother.

As for the effects on her body... I've got no idea. Her blood somehow becoming more powerful is possible, but I'm far more interested in how this effects her "social circle" in that I'm thinking she is going to be more likely to gain Yokai followers.

As for her mom... I think she has to tell her most everything. The physical changes are going to start becoming noticeable, there is a high likelihood of Yokai trying to seek her out, and frankly the stuff with Usagi is a lot more "turns out Usagi is secretly some sort of magical person, she's been helping me deal with all this as best we can, so you didn't need to worry". We don't really need to go into detail on more than that, because Mama Osaka knows that Usagi would of course do anything she could to help Naru.

We've got Alice backing us, which may well be step one in achieving a higher level of organization and deployment. Where might we find other capable managers for what is likely to be an organization that grows into a full-on nation?

Honestly? We might just need to train people into the position to a degree. You can't exactly hire the types of people who can make these sorts of transitions.

What should we have be the official species name for Naru's crystal-crab hairpins?

Silicates
Trilium
Cry-Spiders
Petropians

I can come up with a few more, but that seems a good seed.

Grand total of 7 Points to spend:

Huh... hidden option? OH! The shattered remnants of the Guardian dogs.... yeah, I want that.

[ ][Loot] Shattered Stone Shishi Statue
-- To be entirely honest, MCAT doesn't have the slightest idea why you might want this...[COSTS 0]

The Rest of this... I'm cutting a few things out as I go, I'll explain thoughts once I figure out what I want.

Edit: UGH, okay, this is getting more complicated. Too many thoughts in too many directions. I do have a question for @Lunaryon which I also realize might be answered, but I want to make my initial decisions without reading other opinions. Does anything we don't take go to MCAT?

Because the Diesel Armor is actually something I'd much prefer to GO to MCAT for them to study, rather than us have it.

Other than that, my main thoughts right now are usefulness. Specifically, what is useful for the Crystal Millenium instead of what is useful for the Senshi. To that end... I'm putting forth two plans. Then I'll read the next few pages and respond to people, which should not lead to a double post.

[X] Plan: Equip the Company
- [X][Loot] Shattered Stone Shishi Statue
- [X][Loot] Tanto
- [X][Loot] Archon Staff
- [X][Loot] Staff of Resistance
- [X][Loot] A few random magical books
- [X][Loot] Faust's Reagents

This 7 point plan focuses on the things we can use for the Company and the school. The Shishi statue is useful for figuring out how to make our own guardians. Or we can just repair it via Moon. The Tanto and Staff of Resistance are basically magical tasers, and can be useful to hand to the staff at the building so they can use them. The Archon Staff and Books make for good study materials, and then the Reagents are potentially useful for us or the school. This means we have to give up the Chicken house though. Which leads to....

[X] Plan: No, seriously, we NEED a Chicken House
- [X][Loot] Shattered Stone Shishi Statue
- [X][Loot] The Devil Demesne
- [X][Loot] A few random magical books
- [X][Loot] Archon Staff

This gives us the Chicken house, but we keep the books (total 6 points). The Shishi statue is free so that's good. The Archon staff then can pull double duty. Teaching tool and defensive weapon for the building, since it can summon water and be used non-lethally.

Also, in case this ends up being Approval voting instead of plan voting.

[X][Loot] Shattered Stone Shishi Statue
[X][Loot] Tanto
[X][Loot] Archon Staff
[X][Loot] Staff of Resistance
[X][Loot] A few random magical books
[X][Loot] Faust's Reagents
[X][Loot] The Devil Demesne

Also, Jadeite should take the Lord's Sword as a Trophy (he is the one who beat him) and we should offer to repair the armor, if MCAT wants.

You know what, honestly... Sure. I can change the Wand of Washing to be free, it's a small enough thing that it really isn't worth putting a tag on.

Yes, anything that you don't take goes to MCAT.

Someone also asked about why this stuff was here and 'if we're the bad guys', but the owner of the weapon shop is currently in cuffs for slave trafficking. Combined with the fact that Shippo found evidence that he was also evading his taxes to the Ministry and Samui is not particularly worried about the objects in the shop itself which are being seized because they also break some weapon carrying laws in Japan.

  • I think all the weapons are pretty much useless. All the Senshi except Uranus have something better they can use.

Well, I disagree. They are useless for the Senshi... but what about the people guarding our Building? Back when we were here the last time, we didn't have employees, now we have people working under us who might be able to use something like the Archon staff, one to teach how various elemental magics work, but two to act as a way to delay or hold off minor threats while people run or until back-up arrives.

Useless for us is not useless.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

These two items are things I'd like for us to get. The Wand of Washing sounds like a really good tool to show off in our magic classes in a "see? Magic is like technology, no need to fear it!" kinda way.

I would love to have that wand, but every time it comes up... it just isn't worth the resources. Which makes me sad, because it is such a cool flavor piece.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Presumably, the business is being dissolved and their assets seized. Granted, it's not clear that there's been a court order for either of those things, so the way this is being conducted may not be entirely above-board. But then again, MCAT could have handled all the legal details there while they were prepping for the operation.

There is likely a legal precedent for Government Law Enforcement to seize assets used by certain types of criminals. There is probably a little bit of shady going on here as they probably shouldn't be gifting said things to outside contractors, but it is one of those things that they likely expected and could have gotten a document pre-made for saying that they have permission.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

That reminds me, do any of us still think that blade might be present Inuyasha's sword?

No, we got the backstory of it a while back. Basically it was a custom order, guy couldn't lift it, and they left it where he dropped it because no one else could either.

*Snaps fingers*

We could use it as a mobile shelter for non-combatants! A fight breaks out, the Senshi arrive, with the house close behind. It sets down and takes in what civilians are in the combat zone and switches to a bunker mode that strengthens its structure in exchange for shutting down the majority of its other abilities, save some like inertial dampeners. Innocents are safe and the Senshi can afford to let loose their more powerful attacks.

Okay, I admit, this is the first highly sensible idea I've seen for using the house. A mobile and heavily armored medical ward. We also know that when the stone was removed, the house diverted even more magic to defense. The thing can take a severe beating and could be an excellent way to protect civilians.

I'm actually for that plan.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Won't the Space Sword be better once she unlocks it?

Yeah, this is why I'm so confused why people want the Kanebo. Uranus is going to get the Space Sword and this thing is going to get chucked into the bargain bin. And no one else can really use it effectively except a Yokai (who will likely be getting it via MCAT) or a Senshi... none of whom really need it.

Edit: I see people saying that she needs a weapon to be more effective til she finds the Space Sword, but if we are going to do that, can we try and get a weapon that someone else can use later? Like one of the staves or the Tanto? Heck, we could probably MAKE something if all we needed was a big hunk of enchanted steel that won't shatter in her hands.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Woot woot and Free awesome wand!!! Editing plans. I don't really see the need for the Favors (super useful, I know, but I don't see the need) or the stupidly big weapons. Those are really the only differences between my plans and the other top plans. So, I'm sticking to my wands and staves.

[X][Loot] Faust's Reagents
- Down in the basement of Faust's bargains, in addition to the collection of slaves that MCAT is taking into custody while they try and figure out how to remove the enchantment on them (Pending latter vote), there is also a large number of different magical plants and animal parts, reagents and even lab equipment that is normally used for Alchemy. [COSTS 2 POINTS]

Better to get multiple practical things than a giant chicken house I think.

There are good arguments for us getting ahold of some minor magic weapons as self-defense instruments for our building, given that harassment by the kind of IMO agents who can plausibly be chased off by such instruments is increasingly likely as time goes on.

Part of me wonders if we could just place the house bit into the forest behind the temple here Rei lives and just claim it has always been there.
I don't think it's a very big forest (the shrine is in Tokyo). So it would probably be hard to make the argument convincing.

Well, just as likely the Moon Castle is going to catch people's eyes, but proof of structures in space? Of course some people are going to start saying Aliens started magic or that magic isn't real and it is all sci-fi technology. You wouldn't be saying that if you were looking at a picture of the Earth at night, when the city lights stand out. :p

More seriously, if the 'Magellan Castle' were ON Venus, it'd be utterly impossible to detect unless it was so big it poked up out of the cloud deck- and the cloud deck is something like fifty miles high, as I recall.

But if the Castle were orbiting Venus, oh hell yes would it be visible... as a moon of Venus. Because assuming it reflects light, then at certain angles and times of the Venusian year it will be very noticeable through a telescope. Sure, it's small, but Venus gets pretty close to Earth and is intensely lit by the Sun, and so is anything close to Venus. There are very good reasons why astronomers were confident Venus has no moons long before the first space probes came close to the planet.

Well, the 'genius loci' are the only beings we know of that have a magic-eating metabolism like Naru's, so they are probably the closest we have as a template. That doesn't mean the comparison is perfect, but it's as good as we're going to get, and it's very useful for metaphorical purposes. If someone calls Naru "a goddess of life," that is in some sense a poetic statement and should be taken as poetically accurate.

To be fair, Mama Osaka has known Usagi for a very long time, since she was like... I dunno, four or six or something, so there is that.

I know that for the most part people have been doing this anyways, and I didn't even realize in my exhausted state that I hadn't made it a part of the vote, but please use a plan format for the vote, it just makes things much easier for me.

I don't think it's a very big forest (the shrine is in Tokyo). So it would probably be hard to make the argument convincing.
Tokyo is a very large city, i could see there being a surprising amount of forest inside it, not aware enough of the layout to say for sure, but it probably is not very large (now better question is if it is often travelled, a small forest can hide surprising amount of things).
That said, yes, the argument would not be that convincing.
But i'm not sure it needs to be.
What will most people do if they see a house in the middle of a forest and the local priest claims it was always there?
The door is locked, house looks lived, will they just break in? Call the cops? Whatever the building safety inspection agency is named in Japan?
It's a plan partially leaning on refuge in audacity, and partially on people being fairly apathetic.

Sure, something would eventually give, but by that time we should have figured out a more permanent solution.
And if nothing else, maybe we can hide it in Alise's backyard for a few weeks, she probably has plenty of space.

I suspect that negotiating visiting/fiddling with the House after this point is certainly something we could do. This is just a question of if we want to semi-offically own and be in charge of it.

After all, MCAT can't move the darn thing easily either. They just want to be able to keep a very close eye on it, maybe study it a whole lot.
