29: Trial of the Lost Samurai

    • [X] Kick some dirt in his eyes. Might distract and blind him if theres any under there. Immediately close the distance, feign to strike his shadowy face place but instead just kick him in the knee.

    Well, if it's a fight he wants...

    Who said you had to play fair?

    He sees you ready yourself, and begins to draw his own sword. Then, you kick some dirt into where his face should be.

    (YUMI DEBUFF ROLL: 19)

    He gasps in surprise as the dirt connects, his left arm moving to uselessly shield his face. He's most likely blinded, but just for a moment.

    You take that moment for your advantage, rapidly closing the distance. You feint a strike to his head...

    (YUMI FEINT ROLL: 2)

    He blocks your feint, just as you'd hoped. You then ready a kick,

    (YUMI ATTACK ROLL: 15)
    (LOST SAMURAI COUNTER: 1)

    And plant it right into his knee.

    "Urk!" He growls out in pain, falling down to one knee.

    You feel like you've got the win. That is, until, his gauntlet begins to frost over.

    (ENEMY BUFU HIT: 15-3=12)
    (BUFU DMG: 4+99=103)

    Without warning, he levels his gauntlet with your stomach. A blast of ice shoots forward, slamming into your gut, and shattering on impact.

    You fly back, sprawling onto the battlefield. You try to push yourself up...

    (STR ROLL: 9, CLOSE FAIL)

    You reach the end of your strength, and end up in the same pose he was in just moments before.

    A pale green light shines from his hand, and he stands up.

    "You caught me off guard." He says plainly, sheathing his blade. "Using the environment there was smart, and your feint was impressive as well." As he speaks, he grows closer. "You obviously have experience in combat, but your technique needs honing if you are to survive what's to come."

    "H-huh...?" You wince, holding your stomach. There are still lingering bits of frost covering your jacket.

    "I have been tasked with exactly that. Simply put, I am here to be your teacher." He reaches behind his back, and produces a similar gauntlet to the one he wears. "I will teach you to wield the strength of Demons, and to sharpen your technique. All I ask in return is that do what you believe is right." He extends the gauntlet to you.

    "Do you accept my aid?"

    No clue about SMT so I'm kinda poking in the dark here, but I wanna make sure this isn't a raw deal. Wielding demons could either be a great idea or the kind of thing that makes QB look friendly, so I'd rather get a bit more explanation.

    Other than getting involved in an inter dimensional war between Law and Chaos, where either side winning spells bad things for humanity, there's surprisingly no real downsides to using demons. In fact, if you have the luck/talent* you may well get to the point that Kremhilde Gretchen** is chump change. The gauntlet he is giving us is what will store the demons, and will let us grow like one through the power of magitech.

    Man the rapid fire pace is awesome too. As your reader I just gotta say the frequency of the updates help a lot with the creative juices flowing around.

    You're a little wobbly still, but you manage to stand. The man slowly points his gauntlet towards you.

    (DIARAHAN: FULL HEAL)

    A bright green light shines upon you, and your pain and fatigue are washed away.

    "Er, thanks!" You say, "Anyways, I have questions."

    "Of course," he replies, "Ask your questions."

    "How would I wield the strength of demons, anyhow? On that topic, what's a demon?"

    The Lost Samurai is silent for a moment. Finally, he speaks. "Demons in your world seem to be a rarity. In short, "demon" is a coverall term for almost every creature or spirit that holds arcane power. They usually feed off of Magatsuhi. You would wield the Gauntlet to communicate and negotiate with demons." You still can't make out his face, but you swear he's staring at you. "Magatsuhi flows within all living things. When properly utilized, Magatsuhi can preform miracles."

    "Uh huh... And you say that I'd be able to wield the power of demons, yeah? I can't imagine putting one inside of me wouldn't cause some pretty nasty side effects..." You put your finger on your chin in thought.

    "...What?" The Lost Samurai asks simply.

    "That's not how it works?"

    "No. The demons don't go inside of you. They do, however, teach you their skills and spells."

    "Oh...! Yeah, that sounds more agreeable."

    "I would hope so."

    "So, uh... Where is here, anyways?"

    "This is a realm of spirits. This is so that we can speak privately. I believe he called this place the Training Grounds. And before you ask, no. You are not dead."

    "Okay, but why do I need to have demons and stuff? You said that they were a rarity."

    "Simply put, Demons are soon going to enter your world."

    I like this response, very protagonist-like. On the other hand, other than vocal outbursts, we seem to be adjusting extremely well to everything…
