"I know, and I was hoping to change that. There's a spell that should let you reach Resvynhaf in time-"

"Wait, I read about this. Is this with boots and coins and blood and sometimes troops just disappear?"

You know, it kinda makes sense that in the Warhammer world generals would study logistical magics and rituals, if only so they can anticipate the other side using it against them.

Edit: Like, I'm sure he didn't specifically seek out books on magic to study it, but he would have come across it in strategy manuals and historical accounts of battles and campaigns where magic was used to great effect.

But that doesn't make sense because there are no Ice Witches or Hag Witches in Praag. If it was doing something that important, why are there no mages there to maintain it, or alternatively why has it not been moved to Kislev city? You don't leave something like that unattended in a cursed city for 150+ years.

No, I'm convinced the Mages of the Fire Spire were harnessing it's power in some way, and one of the experiments is still being powered by it.
Because it doesn't need to be maintained. Ancient Widow literally led people here to establish some great magical miracle that presumably empowers her and ties her to Kislev itself. It might be amassing magical energy at the heart of her realm as some sort of a sacrifice or empowering ritual that runs in perpetuity. Or it doesn't even lead to Praag but even further north to some different lynchpin (or only slightly more North, Praag is pretty fucking far from Kislev City)

It is interesting that he knows about that ritual though as it is most likely pre-Teclisian Imperial magic and we know there was crossover there. I wonder if his own witches can do it, or something like it.

Yeah, it absolutely is a huge help in a lot of circumstances and I don't want to downplay that, I'm just leery of the idea taking hold that it's a flat x4 speed multiplier.

In my mind it's incredibly context dependent, particularly in the case of tactical mobility. Using Rite of Way to lead a cavalry charge across a bog takes you from a speed of 'Lmao, no.' to that of a galloping horse, for example. The spell is super neat because it opens up manoeuvres that would be flat out impossible otherwise, in such a way that's very difficult to plan against.

Anyway:

[X] Bring in Ice Witches

More Lilijana never goes amiss.

I think the Widow using the magic being shunted to Pragg to power its (admittedly slow) cleansing method.

Bolded bit is what jumps out to me. Maybe there's an Ice Witch there that keeps her head down and just monitors the waystone? Not like Mathilde ever checked out any waystone-like things in Pragg and "cleansing the area" is the exact thing you don't want anyone knowing about, 'cuz chaos cults and such.

[X] Bring in Ice Witches
We are here to build bridges and look impressive. Having an audience who can appreciate what we are doing would be beneficial.

[X] Find the Boyar
Knowing why this is happening is rather important in the long run, even if it probably isn't an immediate solution.

[ ] Scout the Shirokij
Woodsy Elves of any type are both very good at spotting scouts and very capable of repositioning on the fly. Trying to scout is both high risk and low reward.

[ ] Urge an attack
Spending lives to try and gain political points for someone who might be a friend but is by no means an ally. Pass.

[ ] Attempt a parlay
Hahahahahah. On wait you were serious, let me laugh even harder.

Even if this is an elf in charge rather than a homicidal dryad the odds of getting good faith negotiations out of a warhost from Athel Loren are tiny.

[ ] Contact Ostermark
A definite possibility. However I feel that having an Empire army will both confuse the chain of command and risk friendly fire incidents.

It makes a surface flat and even. If that surface is at a significant angle, then making it flat and even means you've turned it into a slide.
Some would take this to be a limitation. I see it as an opportunity.

Forcing the enemy to charge up a hill to attack you is already a substantial advantage. Forcing them to try and charge up a slide makes you nigh unassailable. Conversely if the enemy is standing on a hill, turning it into a slide converts an advantage into a disadvantage.
Also it would look hilarious.

I think its much more likely that its just redistribution network to create and empower the concept of The Land that Ice Witches basically capitalize. The location might be coincidental, and the flow might not even terminate at Praag.

Arianka just feels... weird.

Weber's Wild Waterslide

The fact that it is a ritual known by the colleges. I do not think Teclis would have had any reason to know rituals that can be used by single use casters given that he was himself a high mage.
Why can't it be a post-Teclisian human invention?

And I mean, far as I'm aware, the Impossible March of the Damned Soldier is Wind-neutral.

Thinking about it, isn't there a solid chance some of the Ice Witches will be coming along with the Tzar regardless? In which case our time is probably better spent elsewhere.

Good to know that the Athel Loren folks aren't fucking with waystones, but alas we don't get to have a cool reprise of Karag Dum where we cut the power and fucked them over. I'm bummed that we only get one day of prep instead of two, and I am concerned that we might not be able to get answers from the boyar if we ask him politely. If we go to him and roll low, we've wasted our last action, whereas with Ice Witches we're guaranteed at least two more casters who can hang in our weight class and potentially as many as five.

So a high-risk high-reward action, vs a no-risk moderate reward action.
I'm stil catching up, but I just wanted to point out that since we've never met the Boyar before, we can probably Mindhole-interrogate him.

He might have heard about us from Vlag, but assuming he doesn't forget about Vlag entirely - which seems unlikely - that seems like a trivial issue that can be written off as just forgetting, if he's even heard anything beyond "Vlag is back now."

Right now at this time period the Tzar does not get along with the ice witches. So then coming along is not likely since they also seem to hate him in return. Also the Tzar seems to be against magic in general and more use armed soldier kind of guy.

The Tzar is coming with an all-cavalry force at maximum speed. That's why he's arriving tomorrow instead of in a week. Most Ice Witches aren't capable of that.
Most is an important qualifier, because Liljiana was ice sliding fast enough that Mathilde had to actually try to keep up. All things considered, Liljiana was pretty special and was building up to it and had a Bearicane backing her up.
