We had the choice to build Wolf to be a combatant by turning him into a Winter Wolf in the Trait Upgrade section of Karak Eight Peaks and we didn't choose it. That combined with the Familiar Abilities we got and the fact that we chose to stop at two because of (rightful) fear of Familiar Obsession and us never training his combat skills or kitting him out for combat means that it's well past the time that Wolf can turn into a murder machine.

In fact, I think that's something that Boney took into account in his portrayal of Mathilde's treatment of Wolf. She finds him absolutely adorable but has put absolutely zero effort into training him to be ferocious, and Panoramia outright pointed that out. Wolf's innocence and happiness is a large part of what allowed Panoramia to see through Mathilde's exterior to the soft dork beneath, and I'd wager it's a good part of why she liked Mathilde in the beginning (she has a lot more reasons to like her now).

After all, Panoramia was pretty scared of Mathilde after the lecture, but seeing Wolf and the way she treats him, she changed tunes right quick.

While all of the groups have good points and things they could give us we are Hunting something in the woods and their are no better Human hunters then the Chosen of Taal. So the Longshanks are the best choice to find out what's going on on our side of things.

[x] Morrite Witch Hunters
[x] Ice Witches
[x] The Ostermark Hedgewise

Let the shanking continue. Disregard any suspicious new divinities that may become more interested.

Gratitude expires quickly, so you might as well make use their good graces while you have them. In Ostermark they're primarily guardians of shrines and pilgrims rather than Witch Hunters, but they'd still have a good idea of what's going on deep in the forests.

I will be honest as interesting as the Hedgewise are I am not sure they would know that much (after all a significant amount of their energy will go into hiding from the authorities) and speaking of hiding working with them would lock us away from working with any other legitimate imperial authority as they would see us work with a proscribed group of magicians and thus in breach of the Articles. That would risk not just our reputation but potentially that of the whole of the Grey Order. It simply would not be worth even the slightest chance of this getting out.

I'm not saying do not vote for the Hedgewise, but just consider the costs.

I don't think the Hedgewise lock us out of working with anyone else at this point - remember this is who we speak to first - if we speak to someone else first, then that someone else may notice us talking to the Hedgewise afterwards, but if we speak to the Hedgewise first (and keep quiet about it) then as far as anyone else is concerned whoever we speak to second was first.

In all fairness I wasn't thinking about having Wolf cast spells as an effective combatant - I was thinking that if he could cast MAP he'd be a great(ly adorable) lecturer.

He's certainly charismatic enough and probably spends lots of time in close proximity to Mathilde's book collection to have a solid grounding in a lot of subjects. Wolf could really break a glass ceiling for familiars in academia.

Wouldn't the technicality be that Mathilde is evaluating the Hedgewise to determine if they're really casting magic?

I do not think you will find a native Ostermarker who believes that the hedgewise do not practice magic, for that matter I doubt you would find a native Reiklander who believes that. They are literally the origin of the word 'hedge wizard' which is a catch all term for rural proscribed magic users popularized by the cults. It would be a bit like claiming that you need to see if the Cult of Meaty McMeatStakes does in fact eat meat.

Algard and Krammovitch's suggested method for bringing them on board with the project was like so:
"The Middenland Hedgewise call themselves 'Cunning Folk'. They're Ranaldites and they have a long-running feud with the Ulricans, so it might be difficult to bring them on board. The Nordlanders are Haléthans and as such are largely concentrated east of the Salz to watch over the Forest of Shadows, so they don't really have any bad blood with the Elves."

"Something to keep in mind, once you're established," Algard says with a nod.

"By which the Magister Patriarch means that collaboration with them may be of use as a pretence for ascertaining their suitability to join one of the Orders of Magic, as required by Article 13," Kurtis says. "Otherwise collaboration with the Hedgewise would make you a party to a breach of Article 3."

"That is of course what I meant," Algard says with a smile. "I understand said ascertaining can take quite some time."

"Years. Decades, even." Kurtis agrees.

"Got to do the job properly."
Ascertaining their suitability for joining the Colleges. It takes quite some time to determine such a thing.
