I am guessing that there are secret drawbacks to picking the best quality, like for the military, it does say that the military is the biggest employer in our country, in other words it will mean dedication a large portion of our economy to the military.
I am a bit more unsure, what the drawback to the secret service might be, but again it probably is rather expensive.

Because you are probably wary of the time I said that Narrative Implications can, and will, shaft you via toilet-guerillas.

I'll leave the hint that having an incredibly strong religion within your COMMUNIST nation, paired with an intelligence branch on par with the Stasi (the #1 intelligence service only beat via use of computers on a mass-scale), and little in the way of social engineering is probably not a stable mix.

You can still play that, but do not expect easy times. Or deathcamp free ones...

Total Social and Political acceptance of people with "The Gay" as 1970 nations would say.
A unique weapon system that is cheap, works great, and can be exported.
Self-Contained Native Aviation.
Great cultural art in music/movie/paint.

A suggestion for the unique feature.

[]The island of Guangchou has always been surrounded by maritime dangers such as rocks, coral reefs, dangerous currents, and the like, except at one point where the nation's only port is located. This makes the island very defensible but limits maritime trade.

I've accepted that we wont have any starting reputation and tried to make a semi functional country without an oversized military and an overdeveloped industry crushing our economy but still with enough too garenty a minimum of independence.

Nothing - absolutely nothing - not your father, not the Chinese, not Hollywood - has been capable of suppressing its practice. On the plus side, this has made your people incredibly resilient and loyal to each other - your National identity is as permanent as the mountains. On the minus side, this does mean you have a massive cultural force to deal with, for better or worse.

So, the idea with this plan is to give us a stable place from which to start. We're in strong control of things, we have no *active* crises, even if nothing is fantastic, China is strong but not ascendant yet, and most importantly, we are an archipelago, which gives us a) plentiful food, b) enough natural defenses that invading us is a pain and c) a strategic and politically advantageous position between the US and China.

@HeroCooky, what I was thinking with my write-in was that our father at some point in the past realized that actually suppressing Xiwa would require killing enough people to effectively destroy his own nation, and basically threw up his hands and turned a blind eye as long as the populace hid the practice really well. Is this feasible?

Oh, that us much more feasible. There will still be lingering resentment because Wei Cai had to at least try a suppression to satisfy the Chinese, but not in the realm it would have otherwise been.

Yes, but only for 1990 and up. For 1970, it would be ships transporting obsolete/faulty nuclear reactors.
