[X]forming a cadet house (leave the name up to Jon)
-[X] the house will be given an island to govern in the Stepstones that way the house will have independence to considered legitimate but stay close enough that no shenanigans like Damon the rogue prince or the BlackFires could happen latter down the line
--[X] if Jon doesn't want a domain to rule he could be given a large plot of developed land and a mansion in the city to become his estate instated

[X] Ask him what he wants.
-[X] Make sure he knows both the benefits and drawbacks to keeping his name or changing it, and the possibility of future ruling opportunities either way.

I think Jon is too young and immature to make this decision at present. He didn't get the Draconic mentality boost like Danny, so he's still basically a kid. No reason we can't wait a couple more years for this, at least.

[X] No, it is still too early.

Well this is nice, some discussion. The last few updates have not really had much of that, particularly on the vote itself.

It is equally nice that I can just write these sorts of character moments and votes without feeling like I have to rush to get to the next point on the timetable.

I almost voted "ask him what he wants", but then I remembered how old he is. Children deserve agency over their own lives, sure, but some decisions should probably wait until they're grown up. And as this will significantly impact his social prospects & position for the rest of his life, I don't think he should make it before he gets a little more maturity.

I could edit it so he knows he can change his name later regardless of his decision?

For the nobility, which Jon is, even though not of the most favored, names mean quite a lot. They are not just a convenient thing to call one Jon to differentiate him from another Jon, names have power and are power. It would be really strange for Jon to just pick another name without being legitimized in some way.

So yes he knows in the abstract that he could just ask to be called something else. He will not do so though.

Are marriage licenses a thing here, or are they mostly recorded in the temples that they happen in? I wouldn't be surprised if our bureaucracy expanded that far.

I mean conceptually we've been all about giving people choices and letting them make their own decisions and letting them forge their own destiny I feel like the least we can do is have a conversation with the kid.

I am curious if there is any way in our Imperium to legitimize someone without creating a cadet branch of the family.

Because we obviously want to remove the stain of being a bastard from Jon but without creating the massive social issue that would be creating another Targaryen cadet branch. There wouldn't be a great benefit to either him or for us at the moment and it creates a couple of serious landmines that would have to be defused.

Any chance we could/do offer chances to individuals strong in magic to create their own lineages/houses/clans? Because we likely want to keep government records on any relevant magical bloodlines in any case, so it might solve several problems.

Asking him to do this now is sort of a waste. He's better off waiting until he's done something to earn it in the eyes of society at large if we want it to actually have value.
