I like the Kron-Azril-Ungol library name, I'll approval vote that as well. Still only approval voting WEBIR because I feel like it more accurately describes what the branch actually does, and I feel like there's a point where clarity is more important than cleverness. I'll throw my own take on a WEBER acronym into the fray, though: World's Edge Branch of Educational Relations.

Let's see if people like it. Or if people think I should've put "educative" instead of "educational"... I felt like "educational" rolled off the tongue better, though.

Still waffling between Head Librarian and high-level policy. The Library is cool and I don't think I'd be sad to see it take up a bigger space in the quest, but everything else we could be spending our time on instead is also really cool.

I'm incredibly happy that Head librarian is putting up a good fight.

It would have been a bit sad for something that people have fought for, for so long, to fade into the background.

So far, it looks like each of the three voting categories has a close race between two options. For our role, the fight is between Head Librarian and High-level policy; for the library name, the fight is between World's Memory / Karaz Kron and The Library of Karak-Eight-Peaks / Kron-Azril-Ungol / The Archive of the Silvery Depths; for branch name, the fight is between World's Edge Branch of Intersectional Research and World's Edge Branch for Esoteric Research.

Folks approval voting both of the contenders in a category might want to think about which one they prefer. Personally, I'm on team High level policy/Kron-Azril-Ungol*/WEBIR, but I'm happy with all of these and won't be bent out of shape.

*Yes, I know, Karaz Kron was my idea originally, albeit modified for dwarven cultural sensibilities. It is epistemically virtuous to recognize when someone else has a better one and not be attached by pride of ownership, and IMO Redshirt's idea blows mine out of the water.

I've been suggesting Karak Kron since 2019; after yesterday's update, I and others asked Boney and Karaz Kron was deemed more culturally suitable than Karak Kron, but the Everlasting Library / mountain of books meaning is still basically the same.

If you independently reinvented the name, I don't mean to downplay or delegitimize it; my point was just "I know this is what I've been gunning for for nearly a year and a half, but I'm dropping it because I think Redshirt's idea is better."

I've been staring at the screen for a bit now, thinking of the best way to sell people on becoming the Head Librarian, and ultimately I've come to the conclusion that trying to "convince" people regarding our position is the wrong approach here - this is ultimately a survey of how much people want to see the Library come up in the narrative, and there really isn't much I can do to sway things one way or the other by enumerating the benefits of being Head Librarian.

If you like the Library a lot and want it to come up every turn, vote to be Head Librarian, if you like the Library a reasonable amount and want it to come up on occasion, vote for policy, if you're indifferent to the Library and want it to fade into the background, vote to be hands off. That's all there really is to it.

As such, if I want to convince people to be Head Librarian, what I actually have to do is sell them on the Library itself being worth that narrative space - so here's my attempt to do that.


The Library of Karak-Eight-Peaks is the culmination of over a decade's worth of work on Mathilde's part. It's funded by King Belegar in recognition of the enormity of Mathilde's contribution towards reclaiming K8P, and in a very real sense Mathilde is personally responsible for bringing K8P up to a state where it can be host to an institution like this safely.

Moreover, this library will be a huge deal. There are other libraries, but very, very few have funding that is in any way comparable to what K8P can provide - and beyond the pure gold K8P can spend, it's an enormous trade nexus with the Middle and Far East. This really may end up being the greatest library in the world in the fullness of time, and certainly will end up being in the top five within even a few decades.

And the first few decades are the most important time - the decisions made now will set the institutions course for centuries to come. If we want to truly promote inclusivity? Now's our chance. Do we want to arrange for a meaningful magic section? Now's our chance. Do we want to buy exotic romance books from Cathay? Now's our chance.

I'm 100% fine if High-level policy wins but I'm voting for Head Librarian only because of the 'tweaks to the AP system'.
 
I like the library and i want to see it come up a lot, but i don't think we have time to be a head librarian, as much as i would enjoy it, we have so many other things going on where we can't just hire someone perfectly capable of doing the job for us.

I just think it is best for the library for Mathilde to remain as someone who sets policy, but does not get into the everyday running of it unless something goes seriously wrong.
