Mind that it is sometimes hard to remember why the hell we keep Mace around.

[X] "At this point, there are no such plans. The reason the Imperium uses a centralized, standing army is to ease the logistical strain and to allow the training and organization necessary to fight in the wars to come. Neither the alchemical manufactories, nor the states enchanters have any capacity to spare for such projects, as arming the state to fight the likes of Baator, the Brazen Throne or the Illithid requires ressources on a scale that would have been unthinkable ten years ago. We have still much ground to cover and should not have our focus waver, lest we pay a dear price for it."

So basically saying, 'if you want it you have to pay for it yourself since the Legion is made to respond to a whole Empire, not a small part of it.

[X] Azel

@Azel could we suggestion to them taking out loans to Iron Bank and other sources to pay for upgrades they want?

"No. I know perfectly well who I am, but you seem to have forgotten who you are." With this Greatjon went towards the wall and tore two of the axes down. For any other man, each one would have to be wielded with two hands, but in his, they looked almost too small. One he wanted to throw over to Bolton, but stopped when he was waved off. "What? Is the new champion of the First Men afraid? You are just a bloodless traitor who needs to be taken down a peg or ten."

Nobody spoke as a faint mist came from the small ring on Boltons right hand, coalescing into a white weirwood staff topped by a blade made from blue ice. When he spoke again, it was barely louder than a normal man spoke, but for him it seemed like shouting. "I am Roose of house Bolton, heir to the Blothrauth Kynmund of the Dreadlands." He grinned as he slowly lowered himself into a fighting stance.

"And I will carve these words into your flesh until you squeal them with the proper reverence."

Meanwhile everyone else in the room is like:

I'd rather not give them ideas and last but not least, we are not giving them access to the military secrets behind our fancier equipment. Both to prevent them from rebelling and to make sure that those actually stay secrets.

Bold of you to assume Dalla wasn't cheering them on. :V

Bolton is truly becoming one of our more competent lords, nice. Also, dang, I didn't realize they were feeling like their culture was going to be eaten away and subsumed considering our very prolific use of the Old Gods, then again, we also made it clear that we're allied with other gods as well and care not for anything else other than skill and loyalty.

Worth keeping in mind that the Old Gods do not care that much about the Faith of the Old Gods for itself, only for the protection it provides the Heart Trees, they are gods powered by the trees and the blood. So if the culture of the North and the First Men vanishes and is replaced with Imperial ordinance against hurting the trees they will be fine. Now mind some of the voices to care a bit about the culture, but only those to which the current customs are recognizable after all the Andalification and that is in fact a small minority.

[ :V ] Turn Mace into a turtle for daring to do more than kiss our boots in gratitude that we let his family live and hold at least some kind of territory.

I am really really passed at Bolton. We divided the nort for a reason, so that no lord gains too much power. And he fucking decides to defy us Just as the empire is starting.

I think we need to censor him for this, maybe call him to our office tell him to fuck off with bullshit.

Them forming factions is perfectly fine. It is a fact of life that this would happen. It's not like they have actual power anyway and if it really becomes an issue we can have Stark be convinced to become an Imperial and act as a counter weight

It's not fine. This short of cultural Supremeacy leads to non integration with the rest of the empire. I don't want our empire to be divided into a dozen different mini kingdoms.

I am genuinely considering just having an "accident" arranged for roose. He didn't even have the fucking decency of a year or two to pass for the imperium to actually settle down in the province.

I am sure now, that fucker is too ambitious. As soon as the new system implemented, I am voting to have him killed.

a bit too late for that , as that is exactly what our empire is and this applies to essos as well
That's why I want to integrate them. Shared mass media and a single set of laws will go a long way in dealing with that. But it won't happen if some asshole forms a separate cultural movement.

By the time this generation dies and their children take their place. I want them to be Imperial first and northerners a far second.

The culture of the Empire is a current mess of a thousand kingdoms. That's not gonna change for a long time. Bolton sees the clock on the wall and is trying to slow it down and if he becomes a problem then, again, it's not like the Curia has actual power

Finally got around to reading the omake! @Azel for what it's worth, I really enjoyed this one, as you know I love me some Boltons, and I liked the way he played everyone (except Umber) like a fiddle as far as I can tell. The rising tensions between Umber and Bolton was enthralling, and I'm interested to see how he carves up Umber, as he said.

Also I really like his First Men title, Blothrauth Kynmund. Sounds almost old Germanic.

They do have cultural power and very real adminstive power in their own lands. The fact that we have a thousand cultures is why we shouldn't let people form their own cultural league.
I want to spread the Imperial culture. If that takes the cultural genocide of the north, I am perfectly fine with that.

There is no Imperial culture at the moment, not outside of SD which has so much magic and strangeness it might as well be Tir Nan Og has far as much of the rest of the realm is concerned.

I mean that is on us to spread the magic and the cultural around then. We can't have unwashed peasants in our empire. What will the Sultana think if we treat our citizens that badly.

But doesn't give Bolton the right to try and gain power right under our nose while actively harming our interest.

It is.

Well, somewhere between Old High German, Proto-Norse and Old Norse. The distinction is rather blurry due to how few written records exist of those languages. Half of what we know about them is back-engineered from later languages or interpolated in between the early Scandinavian languages and the Indo-European root language, which is itself mostly guesswork.

I mean the existence of political factions around cultural touchstones is inevitable. You can bet Zherys is doing the same for the Valyrian speaking parts of the Imperium as we speak, or at least as much as he can get. Then there is Braavos to which you guys handed Pentos and which has always controlled Lorath, that is another voting block.

I think the first examples we will have of a distinct Imperial culture will be the Minotaurs and the Essarians since the former had no real culture of their own and the later were only in the stone age and had their one cultural cornerstone, their faith, shattered through our actions. The other big part will likely be the Ironborn and and Unsullied, who were likewise uprooted by the loss of their heritage and would thus have incentive to re-invent themselves.

I hate all of that, maybe we really should be the propaganda ministry.
I wonder how many cultural genocides we have to quit before they stop doing that.
