[ ] Loremaster-at-Large of Karak Eight Peaks

[ ] Ambassador-at-Large to the Karaz Ankor

Loremaster-at-Large and Ambassador-at-Large seem likely to tread very similar ground - Mathilde's primary method of diplomacy is to solve a problem and then get headpats. The primary difference would be in who we were serving in doing so and what future it would hold, and for that I lean towards the Ambassador position which could well lead to a gradual ascent to Spymaster.
I very much disagree.
As Loremaster-at-Large she would be sent to go poke things that are weird and or dangerous until they stop being either. This will primarily be a matter of research and combat. It is very unlikely we will find another We situation where we can apply diplomacy to the problem.
As Ambassador-at-Large she would be sent to places were humans and dwarfs are squabbling and having to choose who is in the right. It will be almost exclusively diplomacy. And likely an unending succession of people being unreasonable arses to each other.

Later that day, far behind you:

"What do you mean, she's gone?" the Longbeard asks in disbelief.

"What do you mean, the High King's here?" Snorri replies.
Hah! That's what you get for attempting to sneak up on a Grey
To the esteemed Lady Magister, I write on behalf of my master to beseech you to pay heed to this request...
And I'm downright offended by this. If their master requests our services then they should've written said letter themselves.
The only way this announcement would be remotely possible is if Karaz-a-Karak had some way to know immediately that Karak Vlag had returned... like, say, a sudden inrush of energy from two Old Holds being reconnected to the Karaz Ankor waystone network. Damn and blast. For the sake of harmony you'd been hoping that the waystone network was a Golden Age relic that had been forgotten, but this could indicate that Belegar's suspicion might be correct, that the High King is actively and knowingly siphoning magical energy from the Karaz Ankor without their knowledge or consent.
And... It's technically right but lacks a lot of context. Aaargh... I do hope the High King eventually comes clean to us.

Hmmm, my thinking was that the appointment would pay attention to the nature of Mathilde's past success, but you could be right that it would simply look at the fact of it and assign her to unsuitable tasks.

If we go for Spymaster of Wissenland I want to buy/set up an enchanted item of "Don't Kick the Cat" - aka a Cruelty's Desserts item that activates on cats touching it, and therefore causes anyone hurting such a cat to have a penalty to their "fellowship" (presumably diplomacy?) and be shunned.

Skaven already have a tough time working together, and I have no doubt some will be randomly cruel to cats. I wouldn't want to set cats up to suffer, but punishing those who hurt them is a must-have for an internet ranaldite.

[X] The Waystone Project
[X] Ambassador-at-Large to the Karaz Ankor

These are definitely going to be my top choices. My main reasoning behind the Waystone Project is admittedly because I find it to be so damn interesting, but a very welcome potential side-benefit in my eyes is that this might just be the one way where we might be able to figure out that Karaz-a-Karak/Thorgrim isn't just robbing the other Dawi holds for their magic, but rather using them to power the Great Works of the ancestors.

Plus, there might be more opportunities for magical mega-projects this way. :p

As for Ambassador-at-Large, then I've got two major reasons to support it.

The first is that I think that we're in a position where we can promote Human-Dawi cooperation on an even grander scale than before. While I doubt that we'll find many - if any - Kings who are quite as radical as Belegar, having Mathilde personally show up to try to negotiate a treaty will likely go a long way towards achieving success.

Remember the analogy one of the Zhufbar engineers used, with a Dwarf with their backs against a wall being able to sell their life dearly? Well, this is likely going to be our way to ensure that the Empire is that wall for as many holds as possible, if not outright help them push back against the foes that beset them with Imperial aid.

The second is that we'll probably want to work on our diplomacy stat if we ever want to be Magister Matriarch or Supreme Magister, and what better way of doing that than picking a diplomacy job?

Quick question: Will this romance-type voting also be used separately to the current votes to decide between the offers that aren't in our inbox before we make a final decision?

As for votes:

[X] Loremaster-at-Large of Karak Eight Peaks

[X] The Waystone Project

[X] Markgraf of Eastern Stirland

[X] Bodyguard and Tutor to Prince Mandred

[X] Governor-General of Swamp Town

[X] Ranaldian High Priest of Kislev

[X] Border Princess of the Howling River

Voting to find out about everything I find interesting. Maybe the best (I presume four) win.

What other offers do you think there could be that would survive Mathilde's purge criteria?
I have no clue. Weren't we told that these aren't all our possible offers just the ones that arrived in our inbox? I think you said it or did the thread assume and just spread that?

I do wander if being an ambassador at large could convince the heir of Kazakh Drak that an army of humans could be used as meatshields an settlers to take and fortify the hold (with sufficient prep)

The offers in our inbox were all the new ones.

It wasn't clear whether or not they would be, or whether there'd be other new ones to consider, but turns out they are. Things like the Waystone Project were existing ones rather than new.

That was for the temporary threadmark. This one includes the K8P jobs and is a complete list. Unless someone in the thread proposes something new.

So preliminary thoughts - the most tempting of the new postings are:

[ ] The Waystone Project
[ ] Ambassador-at-Large to the Karaz Ankor
[ ] Loremaster-at-Large of Karak Eight Peaks
[ ] Bodyguard and Tutor to Prince Mandred

Most of the other postings would require focusing on a specific and relatively small area for large amounts of time and have high administrative overhead. Theoretically tutoring the prince also does that... but Mandred would be in Altdorf which is less remote compared to swamptown or the Border Princes and I very much doubt he'd require as much looking after as the entirety of Sylvania.

and no payroll to keep the Wizards you've gotten used to working with around and focused.

Just purely out of curiosity couldn't Mathilde employ at least some of the wizards? She is a noble with a rather high income stream and a potential untapped income stream in form of AV.

[-] Sinecure
The first possibility, of course, is that you accept the current status quo as a reward for your hard work, rather than a deficiency to be addressed. Belegar will keep finding ways to make use of your talents, and you'll have time and resources enough for your pet projects, as well as still being on hand should something go drastically wrong and need correcting.

[ ] Loremaster-at-Large of Karak Eight Peaks
Or you could push Belegar to continue sending you afield. He does want to continue to enhance the stature of Karak Eight Peaks in the Karaz Ankor, and what better way to do that than for you to travel it and solve all their strangest problems? It would also mean getting to see every corner of the Dwarven world and encounter all the strangest phenomenon it would have to offer.

[ ] Ambassador-at-Large to the Karaz Ankor
An Ambassador is appointed to a single polity, whereas an Ambassador-at-Large has broader rights for many more places. In this case, for the entire Karaz Ankor. A prestigious and important position, and one that might be a stepping stone into even greater positions within the administrative infrastructure of the Empire. You may not be quite as diplomatic as other candidates might be, but you pride yourself on your understanding of Dwarves and your reputation amongst them is, to put it mildly, rather good.

these are very much 'more of the same' options

if that wants you want, that's fine. but I want something new: so very much no.

[ ] The Waystone Project
Or you could turn to the biggest possible project. on your plate. The Laurelorn Elves have voiced their desire to work with you to unravel as many secrets as possible about the network in the slightly inaccurate belief that you already have some of those secrets. This might be the only chance to pool the knowledge of the Laurelorn, the Empire, and the Karaz Ankor, and for a project that could do wonderful things. Sure, you doubt you'll be able to replicate the combined efforts of the Elves and Dwarves at their heights, but every scrap of understanding of the existing network could make all three peoples better able to protect and make use of the ancient energy streams.

I'm interested, but I also think we can do something else while we 'start' poking at it.

I would like to know enough to have a long term plan before making a multi-year commitment.

[ ] Markgraf of Eastern Stirland
A Markgraf exists to transform troublesome land into a land of productive and obedient tax-payers, usually after said land has been conquered. Historically, it also apparently exists to create rivals to the Elector Count that appointed them, which is probably why the letter made it so clear that no inheritable position would accompany the title of Markgraf. It still remains a position of extreme power, prestige, and influence, second only to the Elector Counts themselves. And it would be quite a feather in your cap if you could one day boast to have pacified Sylvania.

[ ] Count of Sylvania
Or you could go even further with House Weber and turn them - well, turn you - into proper aristocracy. One slice of Sylvania would be significantly easier to pacify than its entirety, and rulership in this corner of the world seems to have worked out quite well for the former Countess of Nachthafen.

I would be lying if I said I was not already onboard the Sylvania train.

-none stop secret and not so secret war with themasters of the night'? (ha, we will show them what a master of the night is
- finally, an excuse to make lots of enchantments to arm up the army with anti-vampire, undead and ghost tools?
- old friends, and enemies and whatever Kemair is?
- Waystones just there, for us? why thank you Rose!
- kicking the von carsteins in their pointy teeth while creating an army build for undead wars and the enevabale return of Nagash?
The Eastern Striland 1rst:
Regiment Nickname: the twilight-hunters
Motto: there is no such thing as immortal.

[ ] Bodyguard and Tutor to Prince Mandred
Though the offer came through the Chamberlain of the Imperial House, this has Heidi's fingerprints all over it. You're not sure if the offer is for exactly what it says or as a cover for beings her catspaw as she plays politics, but either way it would be a position extremely close to the levers of power, and one that would let you have a huge amount of influence over the likely future Emperor.

interesting not super interested but not against it: and just for everyone going '2-year-olds are boring' the kid is only going to be any one age for a turn.

[-] Research Sabbatical
You can't deny that your research projects have been piling up, and it might be nice to take some time off to concentrate on getting through those. But it would mean no immediate challenges to keep you engaged, no employer resources to draw on, and no payroll to keep the Wizards you've gotten used to working with around and focused.

This becomes a lot less attractive to me once I realized that just keeping Max and Johnna will cost almost half the turn income from the EIC alone. let alone all the coast of the stuff we make, build and poke at.

no wonder wizards choose to deal with all that troublesome politics getting in the way of research.

Wizards need their bread too.

every turn of this will tank our savings, and we are currently in the red until the dwarfs decided what to do with that 2000 we owe.

[ ] Border Princess of the Howling River
With Karak Vlag returned, the only pass through the World's Edge Mountains that is not dominated by an existing Dwarfhold is Mad Dog Pass. It seems that Barak Varr wants to change that. Many have tried to make something useful of the sprawling, anarchic lands known as the Border Princes over the year, and one of the few times it was managed was almost two thousand years ago, when Emperor Sigismund the Conquerer established the province of Lichtenberg. With Dwarven support, perhaps you can follow in his footsteps.

I would love to get involved with border prince politics, But I'm aware that I like watching trashfires and I'm cool with the PC failing to roll a stone up a hill in a way others don't.

[ ] Spymaster of Wissenland
Grand Count Konstantin von Liebwitz of Wissenland is known to be quite touchy about his independence, so when you spread word that the Skaven were in a civil war, he lead the forces of his county against the Skaven stronghold of Under-Nuln without any outside assistance except a single Dwarven diplomat. It went rather poorly, as the Civil War had already been decided there and what he had taken for continued fighting was mere squabbling over the spoils. Reading between the lines of the offer, it seems that there may be further consequences for that failed attack, and Wissenland wants your help to avert them.

[ ] Governor-General of Swamp Town
This one is an oddity. The others, you can follow the logic as to why it was offered to you, specifically. But why Swamp Town? Are things there so drastic they need a powerful Wizard to get it under control? Is something particularly magical going on there? Has it become a haven for Black Magisters? Whatever the case, if you want mysteries and adventure, there's few places like the New World for encountering both on a regular basis.

[ ] Ranaldian High Priest of Kislev
Another one from Heidi, this one more directly. This is a wheel you set in motion yourself, and perhaps it's suitable that you follow it through to the end, resolve the grudge between Ranald and the Gods of Kislev, and establish the worship of your oldest friend in a new land. You did leave quite a few mysteries behind in and around Kislev that you'd quite like to get to the bottom of, and it would be fun to have the undeniable right to attend future Grand Conclaves.

was never a fan of these options, so any 'analyzes' would be fake.

they just didn't catch my interest or imagination. For example, even when I didn't like the border prince option, I was still thinking about it and playing it out in my head. never got that for these.

Just purely out of curiosity couldn't Mathilde employ at least some of the wizards? She is a noble with a rather high income stream and a potential untapped income stream in form of AV.

It could be negotiated, but they are getting partially paid in 'I work for Karak Eight Peaks' cred. You'd need to supply more than money for them to put their lives on hold to be at private citizen Mathilde's beck and call.

I'm interested, but I also think we can do something else while we 'start' poking at it.

Pretty sure all of these are multi year commitments.
Which is why we vote now to see what is behind these options before making them.

Would "Founding Member of the K8P Research Institute" have similar cred if it was founded with a great deed?
EDIT: Or would it only be if it was the Transcendent Boon version that actually draws on Karak Eight Peaks funding etc.?

This one speaks to me the most amongst all on the list. Howling River is REALLY close to K8P so we can probably keep our wizards like book boy if we choose it for adventure andwe would continue to have the support of Barack Var dwarves, K8P, and a teleport tower to connect our base in K8P to our base at the howling river.

Heck BoneyM said he's
- I say again, this is not the vote for selecting Mathilde's next assignment. This is for what she's interested enough in to find out more about.
Ideally we can have at least a year or two to get our affairs in order while we look into this option of free time to establish a research institute for that sick action gain with the explicit purpose of finding new ways to develop magic to kill enemies.

Heck maybe weaponize river spirits if my idea is correct to an extant.

Like this option as it is bassicly us being a wizard and playing tower defence against the Gribblies with backing of Barrack Var although i might come around to waystone research.
