Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

I'm interested in seeing us finally get a better idea what the Earth Spirits meant when they said:

Gonna be one doozy of an introduction I think if we mention that we are already aware of something involving some "Titan" that we are likely near and that the Winter Winds/Godmothers are involved in waking it up.
Navigating to that part, and reading this:
Eventually they withdrew, and as they others rejoined them, she asked the first question that came to mind. "Did any of that make sense to you? I've never heard of a real falling star." While the term was used fairly often as a poetic descriptor, stars didn't actually move, they were just hidden while the Sun moved overhead.

"Right? I don't get it," Sixiang said, sounding frustrated. "Still, I feel like I almost remember something."

Chang He and Mo Lian remained silent, the younger of the two tugging nervously at his beard. However, it Chun Yan who spoke up, a frown on her hard features. "...I remember my gran telling a story 'bout the gods sending down a star to punish a wicked dragon king. Just an old folk tale though."

They all fell silent for a moment. "...It is probably just a flowery metaphor for something," Ling Qi said, even reading the expression directly, 'the star' was just a burning radiance descending from the sky. It almost reminded her of the Duchess, but the Cai's light techniques lacked the rippling veils of color expressed by the hills 'words'. "Perhaps a powerful spirit beast died in the south and its blood is poisoning the earth."
And the mention of Cai Shenhua reminded me of an idea I had had about her. Namely that... what if Shenhua found something similar to the southerner's Cultivation method? That is, what if she found a fallen star, and subsumed it or defeated it? Somebody else had mentioned this before I did of course, but I had another thought too: when I read about the spirit-blooded stuff in the recent update, and the discussion people had about it and the differences and comparisons to the Empire, I thought to myself: "... Huh. Could Cai Renxiang or Liming qualify as some weird... spirit-adopted or something? Due to what Cai Shenhua did to her?" Might be reading too much into it, or being too confused or whatever.

Though, "falling stars." The Empire just doesn't get them, it seems like. Possibly because the protection of the Sun is too strong over it? Unlike the southern lands, which did have fallen stars.

Also, that story about "the gods sending down a star to punish a wicked dragon king" and then just now Cai Renxiang mentioned a shard of the sun.
Jaromila's frown remained, but after a moment she spoke. "They are the blood of the Sun, cooled and fallen to earth in great masses of metal. Even cooled, the larger cores change the land for many leagues around."

Ling Qi blinked and she wasn't the only one, such a thing was a bit difficult to imagine.

"And that finishes my answer, lowlander emissary. To take from the gifts granted by the Sky himself breaks no taboo," Ilsur finished.

"I have," Cai Renxiang said slowly. "Heard once of such a thing in the vaults of the Emperor. A shard of the sun, found in the days of the first dynasty. I believe the Empress commissioned a number of scholars to begin a study of it just last decade."
So... in the story about the birth of the Sage Emperor, when his dragon companion found him as a baby, the dragon had had a grudge against some other dragon didn't it?

Maybe the shard of the sun and the story Renxiang mentions might have something to do with that.

Another possible connection is some sidestory or interlude in the previous thread, it was... something about an Imperial trying to track down pre-Empire histories and stuff. And managing to luck into an interview of the Stone Monkey ancestor guy, and getting something about "Until the dragons fucked up" or the like. So. Maybe the 'shard of the sun' was related to the fuckup of the dragons that that Ancestor spirit talked about. A part of the punishment of the dragons. And then it was found in the time of the first dynasty.

Its like...yes Shenhua could probably destroy them as a people, but she's not out of reach. They can fight her, and theres a lot of them that can fight her. Don't buy the imperial propaganda wholesale, we've seen that power is power regardless of source, if they have a half dozen prisms cooperating they CAN fight and kill a White, and they'd have their own appropriate armaments because they didn't get there by collecting bottlecaps.

Of course, whoever wins, the winner inherits scorched earth.

Them being not!Russia, its entirely possible that "General Winter" isn't a metaphor and they have White/Sublime Genii Loci that would act to defend them.

Also, unlike the Empire, they are used to fighting starlight. Shenhua is likely one of the less effective Whites against them.

Xia Ren is a Violet (sixth Realm), not a Prism (seventh Realm).
And there is no such thing as a scrub Prism. Ogodei was no weakling.
Do we have confirmation one way or another? The chapter she showed up in person was a bit vague.
The whole of the last page is cursed.

To move away from that:

So its three nameless clans to the confederation and 4 confederation to the nation.

Assuming that all elements are more or less comparable in strength (i.e. 3 great clans of roughly equivalent strength in the confederation and 4 confederations of roughly equivalent size and strength in the nation) and what we know from the cloud barbarians, who seem to have at least some stake in these confederacies, regarding the strength of their leaders, I assume there to be at max like 1-2 6th realms at the clan level maybe 1-2 7th realms in the confederation.

So for the polar nations' strength:

lets assume 6, rounded up to 10, 6th realms per confederacy. Wich meants there are 40, lets round that up to 50, Elder tier 6th Realms and 8, let us round us round this up to 10 Count tier 7th realms in the nation.

So 50 6th realms, 10 7th realms and no 8th realms.
For one thing Prisms aren't Count tier, Violet is Count tier. Only one count clan in the Emerald Seas has an active Prism. The Argent Sect is a ludicrous concentration firepower. Now, its way too early to be estimating military strength when we've met like 2 ice ladies, but let's try.

White Sky was described as 3 great clans plus their allied Cloud Tribes, so that's closer to 4 Count clans than 3.

Sublime Ancestor: Iron-Toothed Crone
Ruler of the Nation: Mother Winter, probably White, possibly has a White husband Sun cultivator to balance it out.
Confederations: Winter Maidens, probably Prism, possibly with Prism husbands.
Great Clans: These sound about Count tier. The higher positions are elected, so shouldn't have an entire clan infrastructure built around them, but these should. Probably an average of 12 to 16 of these in the nation, but there could be as many as 22 or as few as 8. Each should have at least 1 possibly up to 4 violets, but I imagine active Prisms tend to get voted up to Winter Maiden.

1 Sublime
1-2 Whites
4-8 Prisms
24-48 Violets most likely, minimum 8, maximum 92

Basically the Polar Nation looks like it's at least a top-tier Duchy that might be able to throw down with the Zheng or Xuan. I'm leaning toward not quite the Celestial Empire, but Shenhua definitely can't solo them.

The fact that it apparently looks like an extreme case of frostbite does make it seem like it's some interaction between her nature as an ice spirit, and her origin as the stillborn daughter of a human and spirit. In fact, she might look like a failure in the White Skies method of adoption, a newborn overwhelmed and killed by the power of her godmother...except she's alive, and walking around.

Honestly, to me at least, it felt like there was an unspoken element of "Does your scary looking winter death spirit sister need to eat someone?" and everyone's half expecting Ling Qi to either ask for a sacrifice or if it's okay to let Hanyi out to hunt for herself.

Nah, until this latest update it's clear they all thought Hanyi was a spiritblooded human. The special considerations were because they thought she was... disabled? in some way, because she's an OCP and they misread the situation.

Both of these things can be true :V

I'm really enjoying this arc by the way. I love the cultural exploration and (mis)understandings. It's really fascinating to me and I like seeing how the imperial party navigates a foreign culture, and how the foreign culture reacts to the imperial party lol.

Seconded, there's nothing quite like cultural hi-jinks to underscore the fact that the world is probably going to experience a World War scenario in about 1 to 3 years!

Turn 11: Arc 6-4
"This is unfortunate," Cai Renxiang sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.

They stood in the central room of the small guest suite Jaromila's servants had guided them too. It was somewhat cramped, but warmed by a roaring fire in the gated hearth on the north wall. A low table carved from darkly painted bone sat in the middle, surrounded by sturdy chairs upholstered in thick hide and fur. Four doors arrayed around the room led to small bedrooms.

Most of them however, still stood, with only hanyi flopping back in one the chairs, the beginnings of a pout on her face. Zhengui, shrunk to his most minimal size had scuttled beneath her chair.

"I wanted to avoid misunderstandings over Hanyi's and my own status," Ling Qi said, looking down. She knew that she had not handled it as best she could however.

"I am aware of the quirks of your own cultivation, Ling Qi, that does not mean I do not expect you to control them," Cai Renxiang said. "I know that you could have handled the matter more delicately."

"It does seem like something of a setback, but it is not so bad I think," Meng Dan said carefully, resting his hands on the back of a chair. "Are we not still guests? Miss Ling will need to clear up this theological quandary, but in this too, I believe we may find opportunity yet."

"I apologize if it is rude, but I would very much like an explanation of this matter," Xia Lin said. She stood ramrod stiff, with her arms crossed over her breastplate, casting occasional glances at Hanyi.

Ling Qi grimaced, understanding her distress at least a little. Cai Renxiang was aware of Hanyi's unique circumstances, but she did not mention it to others, precisely because of the potential misunderstandings. "Hanyi is not human, despite her father. She is wholly a spirit, due to the circumstances of her conception."

"I do not think we need to know the precise details," Gan Guangli rumbled, leaning against the wall beside the hearth. Despite his words, he looked a little uncomfortable. "I trust that lady Cai would not let anything untoward pass by."

"As your own senses may tell you, she is no spirit blooded, and the Baroness' binding is wholly normal," Cai Renxiang said shortly.

Ling Qi understood their discomfort, it was not often a thing talked about, but sometimes the lines between spirit blooded and spirit could be a little blurry, and sometimes that led to… problems. Attempting to perform some form of the beast binding ritual on another cultivator was naturally a crime, successfully doing so required rituals that were also crimes.

"Please do not take my words as distrust, Lady Cai," Xia Lin said, stiffly bowing her head. "The context of this was alarming, you must admit."

"It is not normally something worth bringing up, for that exact reason," Ling Qi said. "I admit, it is a little hurtful that you would think such of me though."

Xia Lin pursed her lips, glancing once more at the now openly pouting Hanyi. "I will apologize, this matter is close to my heart, and my reaction was poor."

Ling Qi wondered at that, but dipped her head accepting the apology. "Given the circumstances, I cannot blame you for a mild overreaction."

Gan Guangli shook his head slowly, still seeming a little bewildered. "It is good that we do not fight between ourselves, but what are we to do now that we have been left to wait?"

"We must wait, but we should not be idle," Cai Renxiang said. The faint tap of the toe of her boot on the floor was strange still, Cai Renxiang was not given to nervous ticks. "We have been instructed to remain on this floor and not to attempt the stair, nor leave the redoubt without informing them first."

"Which does not mean we must remain in these rooms," Meng Dan agreed.

"Yes, I believe it would be well for us to learn more of our hosts in the time we have been given, to avoid any further misunderstandings," Cai Renxiang said.

"Lady Cai is wise," Gan Guangli said, stroking his chin. "Hm, I admit, I am interested in the fellows at the sun shrine we passed on the way here."

Ling Qi recalled the brightly lit room she had glimpsed, with its central pillar carved with many faces and scenes, and gilt in gold, and the serene men in white robes within.

"I think I would like more time to focus on examining the mural in the garrison hall," Meng Dan mused. I am sure I can manage to draw some of our fine hosts into discussion on their tales."

"If I am to split from Lady Cai," Xia Lin began slowly. The heiress nodded once, and Xia Lin held in a sigh. "...Then perhaps the training hall. If I am to be of use, let me test the ways of their warriors."

"I will seek out this Ilsur," Cai Renxiang said. "Interrogating his position within this 'confederation' and his influence upon these negotiations is important, I think."

"I will have to consider my best path, but I believe I need to take a moment to myself first," Ling Qi said quietly, looking toward Hanyi.

"I messed things up again. I'm sorry Big Sis," Hanyi muttered.

She sat on the bed in the little room they'd been provided, kicking her feet.

"You didn't," Ling Qi said crouching in front of her. "You did nothing wrong, I'm the one who made mistakes."

"But I'm the one who's messed up," Hanyi said glumly. "That mean auntie said I'm broken, and these people think there's something wrong with me too."

Ling Qi scowled, and she felt a faint pressure on her shoulder, and glanced up to see Sixiang's face. "Hey, don't go getting yourself down in the dumps squirt. That other ice spirit was a nasty thing, and these folks just don't know you yet."

"Sixiang isn't wrong," Ling Qi said gently. "We don't know what they think of you yet. I'm sure we can clear things up."

"I, Zhen, think that Hanyi worries too much as well," the serpent hissed from the bedside, still shrunken, he barely rose above the bed spread.

"I think I was just hoping that Momma's relatives would like me," Hanyi muttered.

"Hanyi has all the relatives she needs right here," Gui scoffed.

Ling Qi shot her little brother a quelling look. "I won't say your wrong to feel the way you do Hanyi," Ling Qi said gently. "But we did just get here. People are still unsure, so let's try and make a good impression okay?"

Hanyi let out a little huff as Ling Qi wrapped her in a hug. "I'm not a baby, Big Sis doesn't have to coddle me."

She didn't push Ling Qi away though.

After a moment, Ling Qi straightened up and offering her hand, helped Hanyi off the bed. With Zhengui following along at her heel, Ling Qi made her way out of the suite of guest rooms and into the hall outside. A single guard from their hosts stood outside, a courtesy more than anything else.

"Have my companions all gone out?" Ling Qi asked briskly.

The woman, a full head shorter than her, if twice as broad gave a short nod, her dark braids bouncing with the motion. "They have Emissary. Do you require guidance?"

Ling Qi hummed to herself, feeling the energies emanating through the cavernous halls. No she could sense them well enough to navigate on her own. Harder to miss than those energies was the unnerved looks theguard was shooting to Hanyi.

"Hey Miss, I'm not gonna eat you or anything you know," Hanyi said, putting her hand on her hip."My Big Sis has taught me better than that you know."

The guard coughed into her hand, looking uncomfortable. "I am sorry. No offense was meant Emissary."

"I am not the one to apologize too," Ling Qi said quietly. "May I ask what exactly it is that has made your folk so uncomfortable around my sister? It predates my hasty words."

The woman looked like she wanted to squirm under their gazes, but her discipline prevented it. After a long moment, she replied. "Ice children need to feed as the gods do, not as humans. Most do not act so civilly as your sister Emissary."

"Ice children are those who are born wrong?" Ling Qi said, remembering Jaromila's words. "Who don't take the blessings of winter well?"

The woman nodded, looking deeply uncomfortable. "My aunt, she has a child like such. They are older than I, yet have the mind of a child and the hunger of a great wolf… it is not shameful, but sad, yes. Most are worse and must be given to the care of the maiden and the voices. I truly mean no offense."

"It is fine," Ling Qi sighed, squeezing Hanyi's hand for comfort. Maybe it was a good thing she had spoken. Perhaps if Hanyi's difference was acknowledged by their leaders, those looks would fade.

Ling Qi led her spirits down the hall, under the false sky. It would be best, she thought to check in with some of her companions, before deciding what to do herself, but where to go?

[] To the Sun Shrine, to see how Gan Guangli is getting along with the… priests.
[] To the entrance hall, to see what stories Meng Dan is managing to extract.
[] To the training hall, where you can even now hear the sounds of blunted weapons and the thump of fists on flesh.
[] To seek out Cai Renxiang and Ilsur, and learn more what binds Cloud to Ice.

anyone tries to bind Su Ling, that's a grudging

So I don't blame Xia Lin for reacting poorly to the idea that we might have done something similar.

Hunh, interesting.

One thing, yrs:

This kind of reads like Hanyi and LQ are being grumpy at the guard for being rude to Hanyi... but the guard didn't say anything to Hanyi. Ling Qi leaves, meets the guard, asks her a question, the guard answers, and then Hanyi tells her off. Did something get deleted in editing? It feels like something is missing from this exchange.

I'm inclined to one of the first two. It would be good to give Xia Lin a little space after our little spat right there rather than push her further. Ilsur doesn't seem especially well disposed to us, and Cai Renxiang is probably wanting to try to butter him up after we messed things up. The Sun Shrine and the tapestry offer opportunities to get more background information on their culture and theology which could us avoid further screw ups.

These two interest me the most.

On the one hand, it'd be nice to finally get a scene with Gan. I'm also interested in the differences between our Sun spirits.

On the other, stories are Ling Qi's thing.

Hanyi talks to the guard, but the guard only responds to Ling Qi. Which is rude.

Moon probably plays a big role for these people, as a partner to the sun and the main source of light during the winter nights. Plus, Sun and Moon dualism play into Emerald Seas' history, so we can use that to further connect the two cultures.

Mmm, yeah Gan or Meng I think.

Give the other two some space, as well as more of a focus on the cultural questions. Also if Renxiang is trying to talk to Ilsur then us going over there and potentially outnumbering him might throw out the dynamic, while sparring stuff just isn't as interesting here.
