[X] The Boon of Fire Kindled in the Humblest Hearth: The entire population of Sorcerer's Deep gains the Bonus Feat Arcane Talent. The boon is hereditary and semi-dominant, the number of those blessed are likely to spread and increase in time. Those who wield such minor magics are more likely to bloom into full sorcery. In such a case they may freely exchange the feat for Minor Spell Expertise as soon as they have gained the ability to cast Level 3 spells

Does that cover babies/toddlers as well?
I hope none of them gets Acid Splash.

Literally everyone, the spells they get will be safe for their use, so a small child will get things like light and mending that can't hurt anyone.

  1. Yes, enough of a chance that on the balance the magic will spread.
  2. Considerably greater than 50% but not 100%
A pair of two people with this feat would need to spread it to two descendants to keep the population stable, let alone increase it. Given that birth rates should be dropping noticeably already, that means that the feat won't spread at those percentages.

Assuming that FF-phenotype pairs (both having the Feat) produce F offspring is 75%, then they need 3 children to produce 2.25 descendants with F-phenotype. That's more children then I would expect a pair in SD to have though, since socioeconomic forces will trend towards post-industrial families with about 2 children or less on average. So for FF-pairs, the probability for F offspring needs to be 100% for the population to not actively contract faster then potential population contraction under these conditions.

For Ff-pairs, the rate would still have to be in excess of 50% chance, since with 2 children that would result in 1 F-phenotype child, which keeps the population stable.

I mean, we can talk a long while about how Targ blood is magically superior and keeps being phenotypical dominants despite Viserys being, by regular genetics, more then 70% or so Dornish, but percentages work as percentages do and so do sequences.

We refused the idea of a lighthouse in the Red Temple last time they suggested it, and there's no way I'm accepting now.

@DragonParadox, but Sorcerer's Deep also includes an underwater district. Them too?

...do we also have to prepare against self-replicating rats that have fiery tails?

The best part is this vote implies that setting up a proper Arcane Lighthouse in each city increases provincial wealth by +1. That's pretty damn big, and we should do it.

This feels almost like R'hllor is trying to one-up all the boons we've been offered by the other faiths... Ok, changed my mind, I prefer that the Empire benefits as a whole and not just SD.

People, please reconsider.

[X] The Boon of Protection Against the Dark: The fire of the temple retains the ability to serve as an arcane lighthouse, making it much easier to navigate the surrounding waters. (+1 Provincial Wealth from Trade). Lys, Myr, Tyrosh, and Volantis gain similar benefits as well. With further study the Red Priests will be able to replicate the ability to other trading hubs.

There are a few really great cantrips that will change the lives of our citizens.

Mending means that our already high quality, often Hardened goods will remain in good repair for generations to come, and even more mundane items can be easily repaired and maintained to prevent wear and tear it failure.

Prestidigitation is a magical toolkit able to do so many useful things to make life more comfortable and pleasant. You can clean with it, flavor your food, chill your drinks, etc., and it lasts for one hour per use. Being able to use it 3/Day means people can always eat food that tastes amazing, have cold or hot beverages, clean up easily before and after a meal, make sure they have clean clothes and homes with a minimum of effort. So many things we take for granted in our modern world now become available to our citizens to go along with all of the other innovations and booms we've introduced over the years, like indoor plumbing and safe drinking water.

My reasoning is that will take a while for people to get out of the habit of having large families, just like it did IRL during the industrial revolution. I'd say for the next generation or so there will be a baby boom in SD with 3-4 children per family with the trend holding for the rest of the empire longer still as people with the mutation move out to go to other cities and provinces in things like bureaucratic jobs of businesses in lower income areas.

That boon is largely worthless in the long term since naval trade will massively contract once the alternatives (Terminus, AG-Vessels) become more widespread. I mean, it's a minor miracle that naval trade is still a thing right now, what with the number of gribblies in the water.

How do we not already have lighthouses?

It still feels unfair for the rest of the Empire if only SD benefits. Too much Centralization destabilizes the realm as a whole. The outskirts should benefit as well.

I think that we should see a bit of the opposite effect at first. With vastly increased stability, food availability, and healthcare where there never was before, people should be feeling more secure in having children. Suddenly their kids will most likely all survive their childhoods! More hands on the farm! They're still in the mentality of more kids = more help rather than "Oh shit another kid's college tuition to pay for".

We'd see a decline in birthrate in a few decades, but not now imo.

We kept forgetting. IIRC we were going to have Bloom design a lighthouse for Sorcerer's Deep. We'll just need to remember for the next turnvote.

@DragonParadox, are people going to be able to choose which cantrips they will be able to use? It would be unfortunate if they are gained randomly, as not all cantrips are created equally and many are extremely niche.

I hope we'll get at least a couple interludes from the perspective of people who have suddenly developed magical powers (though extremely limited ones), including not only citizens, but also visiting merchants, tourists, transient travelers, and even foreign spies. This is such a major development, not to mention being really neat, that it deserves a lot of coverage.

A large part of that is the urban-rural divide though. Fertility is higher in rural areas and the population drive in pre-industrial societies is purely the rural space, with the urban areas providing strongly negative population growth. The other big indicator for fertility is socio-economic positions, specifically the need to have children who take care of you once you are too old to support yourself and the lack of alternatives to manual labor to support yourself.

Also, you are missing the point. The prevalence of the trait will still shrink in percentage of the total population right from the beginning, and unless Ff-pairs will reliably produce more then one offspring with F-phenotype, the trait will die out after a few generations. This is wholly independent of total population development. SD having a lower fertility rate then the rural areas would just accelerate an inevitable trend.
