what did we give the emperor?
It wasn't expanded upon.
"We do rather focus on how funds are obtained. Our own dear Ulgu could make quite a terror of any that put their minds to the acquisition of wealth, as I'm sure you're aware. I'm likewise sure your acquisitions will remain benign, and there will be no need for any of those little loopholes to become a noose." She taps the silver with a fingernail. "This isn't a warning. If we didn't have faith in you, you would not bear your current rank, and truth be told the silver will come in handy - our wedding present for the Emperor was not cheap. This is simply a reminder to help you retain that faith we have in you. As the Wolfship captain said to the midshipman: if a fish jumps aboard there's no point throwing it back overboard, but don't get so used to the taste that you find yourself baiting hooks. Is that clear?"
Edit: Argh, ninjad by QM themselves.

I dunno what's caused this change, but I'm suddenly feeling a pressure to get as much done as we can before we reach our destination, whereas the previous 'what do you do this week' vote was very much "is this a good thing to do at all?"
A tiara for his new wife.
Was it at least enchanted in some way, or does that sort of thing set off too many alarm bells coming from one of the two mind-focused colleges?

Not too concerned about the social spots, but this is pretty much exactly what we spent so much time working on Rite of Way for, and the Windfall is something we're unlikely to get a chance to study up close again- almost certainly not with other wizards around.

Oh yeah, I ought to remember to vote while it's still time to influence it.

There, that's a good and decent vote.

Gut take on votes:

[X] Scout the lands of the Iron Wolves

I have a lot of regard for the Knights of Taal's fury, but this isn't their typical operating environment. And if there's anyone who can conceal their movements on the steppes from hostile parties it's the Kurgan. And if there's any Kurgan who could potentially successfully ambush us here, it's the tribe that specializes in doing exactly that. Especially if they might have been tipped off in advance, say by some extra-speedy Plotter daemons (already established to be interested in and able to fuck with the Expedition given they found and burned one of our supply caches on their way to hitting the Skaven combes) rejuvenated from sacrificed Skaven and sent ahead from the rest of the daemons to pass a holy message from the Dark Gods about an imminent opportunity for potential profit/fuckery. And you know how to prevent an enemy skilled at concealing their movements from hiding said movements from you? By not letting them become aware of you. A single Grey LM is going to be almost infinitely stealthier than a detachment of Knights scouting in sufficient force to not get ambushed themselves. Plus, if the Plotter daemons are involved we'd be vastly better at spotting any magical fuckery than the Knights would be; the Kurgan have magic-using Shamans themselves, for that matter.

This is the most vulnerable the Expedition is going to be (at least before we hit the Chaos Wastes proper) and it's the first point where personally scouting could be expected to be potentially significant. We should do it.

[X] Use Rite of Way to ease the ascent

It's what we focused on getting it finished before the expedition for, yeah? No point in making it and then not using it.

[X] Investigate the 'Windfall' with the Light Wizards

Near-unique magical phenomena only accessible in a selection of remote and dangerous locations, but currently conveniently at hand? Yes please.

[] Sir Ruprecht Wulfhart the Younger

I'm not massively interested in this guy, but the thread seems to be pretty horny for talking to this guy and he narrowly lost the last vote so what the hey. And there's certainly something to be said for acquainting ourselves with the Knights since they're the only non-dwarves on the Expedition not at least theoretically answering to us (sans Ljiljana, that is).

Edit: removing my vote for Ruprecht, since he's currently in competition with "scout the Iron Wolves" as the last qualifying vote. And as aforementioned I don't really see him as a priority, while I absolutely do care about scouting.

I'm just generally feeling like getting to know the Knights and odd wizards out for some reason now.

Other:
[X] Use Rite of Way to ease the ascent
- Will only be necessary during the roughest patches

We made this spell for a reason, and this is one of those reasons
I find it especially amusing that we created this spell, because I remember back when Abelheim was having that road cut through the edge of the haunted hills, and one of the questors in the discussion was wondering whether we had any way to help, with misconceptions as to the abilities of grey wizards, assuming they were more like D&D wizards.
At the time it was explained that if a 'create road' spell could even exist it would probably be a gold wind spell, and would still be out of our bailiwick.
WELL LOOK AT US NOW! MUAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA!

Magic aid, Magic science, and getting a look at the baseline personalities of our two remaining direct subordinates. Then all that'll be left on the social checklist will be our indirect subordinates and the knight leaders.

Cutting my vote down to this, because I've been convinced we should do scouting. I'd prefer to talk to Cyrston, but any of the leading socials are fine with me for the final slot.

NEGAVERSE: RHUNRIKKI STROLLAZ
So, since Mathilde-of-the-Many-Titles and Golden Age Dwarf Santa are both Companion options in the new Karaz Ankor jump, I wrote a little thing. Yes, I'm linking both this thread and the other one, because I'm posting this in both.

Praise @soulcake and @BoneyM.

NEGAVERSE: RHUNRIKKI STROLLAZ
From strol, to walk or travel, and -az, 'the definitive article, the real thing.' I couldn't find a khazalid for 'lost' or I'd have used that instead.

Well, you're still alive, so that went better than it could have. Beardlings!

Absently brushing the soot from your beard as best you can, you begin formulating a right proper avalanche of a grumble on the subject of careless experimentation. Then, as the remainder of the smoke clears, you pause. This is not Kraka Drakk. The stone is wrong, the elevation is wrong, the sun coming in that window is at the wrong angle for this time of day, and that is not a Dwarf.

Is this one of those seafaring Elgi there's been word of? No, too short, only barely taller than you are. And her ears are round -

The runed belt she's wearing catches your eye, and from there the rest of the runes in the room. Everything else ceases to be important. Whatever Hold you've ended up in, that one with the sapphire crown is clearly the King. This leaves you with the question of what damnfool apprentice is responsible for the absolutely shameful work being worn on open display in front of him like prize gifts and why their shoddy mine bracing of a master didn't step in!

As you open your mouth to begin a truly incensed grumbling, the Elder to the King's left collects himself and starts speaking first.

Things abruptly get very strange.

What You Know
  • You are in Karak Eight Peaks. It is the Age of Vengeance, the Ancestors are all but gone, and the Dwarves are fading. (Bah!)
  • Kraka Drakk and the other Northern Holds have been lost for centuries. (BAH!)
  • What you took for a simple Elder, insofar as such a thing exists, is Kragg the Grim, regarded as the greatest Runelord of this Age (BAH!).
  • Things, in general, are a complete and utter shambles, and would be worse if not for the Umgi - 'human' - Mathilde Weber, who is serving as 'Loremaster' to King Belegar Ironhammer, and is apparently responsible for retaking five of the Eight Peaks from a variety of bitterly hated foes you've never heard of in your life (and also Trolls) in a single day.
  • Via a fairly rapid exchange of grumbles and counter-grumbles with Kragg, you have established your bonafides as a genuine 'Golden Age' Runelord.

More detailed dossiers on individuals of note will be forthcoming shortly, but in general, wat do?

Management reminds you that this is a Negaverse Omake and you should not actually vote here, just in case you mistook me for the OP.

Given she apparently conquered five peaks in a day I'm not surprised! Against orcs and skaven? She's a fucking shadow mage! I could maybe understand fire or death or something like that, but even with Dwarf army support how would you even -

I appreciate the lure of the What The Fuck but

[O] Analyse your arrival point

Is both time critical and super important. If we can get back and forth, or bring people back and forward - like, what if the Ancestors vanished because they came forward in time to save the Dwarves?

You're, uh. You're kinda jumping ahead a bit there. In the first place screwing with time seems hella unsafe, because A) if you look at the character sheet, or if you're familiar with Snorri from the original Quest, you'll notice that we have no (zero) experience with time, and B) which part of the Warhammer universe is characterised by fucky time? Exactly.

-[O] Think about what you'd need to do for a proper apprenticeship here

Kraka Drakk will survive without us; given that Word of Bonecake from the What Happened To StrollarQuest post is that we are Strollar Snorri plus a bit of extra knowledge and research and some secrets, Drakk - Goldenage!Drak? Gold!Drak? Snorri's Drak? - has a bunch of our former apprentices and their apprentices, plus a bunch of others. These clowns have us and that's it, as far as actually good runelords go.

Getting to call Kragg the Grim a clown is amazing all by itself, but I have to admit I'm hella excited for a Dwarf from before all the Grudge and Slayer stuff to get stuck into modern Mallus and shake things up. Mathilde seems crazy awesome too (Bonecake, what the hell did you roll?) and while I'm slightly terrified I also really really want to see a collab. What will happen when we put Snorri Presents on the woman who routed five mountains' worth of gribblies in a day? I don't know, but I want to find out.

As cool as that sounds, remember we have Winds Denied? Weber is going to be lugging around a fat -35 penalty whenever we wander in her general direction. Personally I don't see that as a bad thing because tbh I'm sus she's some flavour of cultist, probably the Just As Planned type (Weber? spinning webs? plotting? hmm), but if you like her you might wanna keep it in mind.

[O] Analyse your arrival point

Time-critical options are king.

Can't we control that, though? I'm pretty sure even these local degenerates ( :V ) can do something that basic.

In order, all personal opinions.

Cyrston - He was fine despite dispelling the Greater Demon. Everyone else who touched it was not. Three is a small sample size but it is still a point to look into. Either very reliable and should dispel more often, or very sus.
Alexandra - Wants to be noticed. Feeling she isn't is the kind of weakness that is both easily addressed, and I don't want to take into the wastes with me. Don't want her to decide she has to do something stupid to prove herself, like trying to chain cast her more complicated spells until she explodes.

Scouting near the convoy - Scouts the area around us, Kurgan move quickly and are best as raiders. If scouting at too large a distance they will move in after we have passed through.
Also lets us see how the Winter Wolves themselves are reacting. I view this as better than talking to Ruprecht directly.
If the leader has doubts but the troops are fine, then they are still close to a hundred elite soldiers.
If the leader is resolved, and his troops are nervous and frightened we're gonna get a rout.
Ideally they would both be fine, but I am more concerned about the troops themselves then the leader. Ruprecht rallied long before the rest of them.

Rite of way - The roughest territory where people normally have to stop is the best place for ambushes. As long as we keep moving over these areas, the Kurgan probably don't have anything large enough to hit the Steam Wagons themselves.
Scout the Lands of the Iron Wolves - If we really want to make sure the Dragon Ogre isn't coming for us then this is on the table. Feel it is unlikely but would still enjoy to see it. Approval voting.

Investigate the Windfall - We understand magic better then people. There is no better bonding experience to give us insights into the lights then how they sit back and stare at the winds alongside us. Also it is going to be fun to read about.
Finally a mystical place, we might well not be the only things there to take a look. Our lights are great in a choir against demons. Lets make sure they don't get taken out in an ambush by a wandering monster.

The one I really want is the Rite of Way, but that probably doesn't need much boosting regardless.
