Huh. I was just kind of assuming that they were running a capitalistic hell, where declaring incognito meant increasing the CDwarf cut of all of your transactions.

No, the percentages for various types of goods is on display in the Trade Hall.

(don't ask what they are, I don't want to have to do a deep dive on researching what would be a reasonable rate for Medievalish international black market taxes)

I do enjoy when BoneyM puts these mystery items on the table for us. The lore in this quest is always so well developed that any chance to see things from areas we likely won't go to is always really neat. It's like a little glimpse of what's going on elsewhere in the world.

Now now, let's not throw around unwarranted attacks like "black market" these horrendous slave pits aren't a black market at all. They're officially run by a sovereign nation after all.

That's easy: five.

If someone asks "five what?" you just stare at them until they cough and nervously agree that it is, indeed, five.

Huh. Thought, what if we get to Karag Dum only to find out that they survived, but were recently raided by Chaos Dwarfs and Dwarfs got taken as slaves to Uzkulak?

Why not form a temporary alliance with the skavens to help them get the drop on chaos dwarves in exchange for them getting loot, and us getting freed slaves, clan Moulder, is the clan of our skaven prisoner, he'll be happy if we help his clan get artifacts, We can transport the slaves, loot to Karag Vlag, get them to guard them to partially repay the debt to Mathilde by granting shelter to freed slaves, and Mathilde has the mountain burning shadows thing to fall back on.

In the mean time why not buy a slave or two, to save them, its better than doing nothing and not saving anyone,

What stops a slave-keeping backstabbing race like the Skaven from betraying us and enslaving us all once were outside of Uzkulak? Or the hobgoblins and Hung outside for that matter? If the slaves number in the hundreds and thousands, how will we feed and transport them? Also will they be joining us to Dum or are we to turn back to Vlag once again and annoying Borek? Or will we do it after our mission to Dum where our return trip is not guaranteed? What if we did ally with Clan Moulder and encounter Skaven slaves and they did not betray us will we then betray them? Lets say these slaves are Chaos Dwarves will we free them, kill them or let the dawi in Vlag kill them?

Getting slaves out of Uzkalak is no minor undertaking. We could kill the current owners and likely escape with Mathilde's life. But that wouldn't actually help the slaves.

Thinking longer term Mathilde does actually have the resources to destroy Uzkalak. Or at the very least make a good go at it.

Method 1: The Garrus Gambit. Step down as Loremaster. Create an actual cover identity. Put the coin on Night Prowler. Walk in and start killing people. Mathilde can likely avoid being caught. And can possibly kill people fast enough to cause genuine disruption. However whether she could do both at once is far less certain. For as long as she is willing to stay and play SniperGreatsword Batman she can halt the local slave trade.
But even with years or decades she can't actually destroy the city. Nor prevent them moving trade elsewhere.

Method 2: The Omega Option. Walk out into the fields of bones. Forsake her vows, renounce her allegiance and unleash the secrets of Dhar. Call up an undead horde and march on the city. We have no clue how powerful Necromancer Mathilde would be, nor any real idea of how formidable Uzkalak's defences are. However whether she can smash the place or not, the damage to Mathilde's view of her self would be catastrophic. And even in victory she would need to commit to destroying the rest of the Chaos Dwarves. Alone, with only the dead for aid or company.

Method 3: Marienburg Method. We go to Belegar and trade in our Transcendent Boon for enough money and political support to get every mercenary in the old world and every Slayer in the Karaz Ankor to march on Uzkalak. Then we go to the Emperor and trade in our Great Deeds for all the guns of Nuln and every knightly order to march on Uzkalak. And with this vast force we can smash the city. It will cost Mathilde most of what she has. It will cost the Forces of Order a horrific number of lives and immeasurable opportunity costs.
And as soon as they all go home the Chaos Dwarves will return to rebuild.

And ultimatly that is the problem. We can kill a few slavers. We can destroy a city. We cannot stop the slave trade. The scale of it is simply beyond us.

I worry that we're gonna miss a plot hook in those slave pens. Like, say, potentially that High Elf explorer? Or someone else Incredibly Interesting.

I am in favor of eventually orchestrating some sort of mass slave escape or revolt, but there are a lot of factors that will need to be considered. The biggest obstacle that I see is that I doubt that some of the groups of slaves would work well together or with Mathilde for that manner. I'd guess that a large portion of the slave population would be Greenskin and Skaven. Most of the human slaves would likely be Kurgan from the nearby area.

Setting things up so that everyone can escape without devolving into infighting would be very difficult. Not impossible, but certainly very difficult. If Mathilde isn't a persona non grata among the Kurgan after the expedition, maybe she could ally with a tribe that has recently suffered losses and has had members sold into slavery. They would probably be more reliable than a Skaven clan.

You want to actively ally with Chaos worshipers in some quixotic campaign against slavery? The articles of Magic would like a word with you, we would not have he fig leaf of the expedition

We don't have to end slave trade, just save the current crop of slaves in the city, at the least maybe free the slaves so , they can die fighting instead of being sacrificed, with her magic she could cause a disruption and maybe set off a few dangerous artifacts, and if worse comes to worse, maybe a slave can take the blame, by claiming he/she escape by him or herself, or maybe we can frame the chaos gods, after all a daemonic warband did pass through east.

Not going to the slave pens is just running away and failing without trying, we might as well try since we have the protector coin active. mathilde does have mental magic that can make gold or anything more attractive and other magic at the beginning of the quest.
