So basically it took 50 slayers and a few days to yank Karak Vlag back?

I'd remove credit from the Slayers, but maybe give credit to the non-turned inhabitants of Vlag for the rescue of Vlag.

The moment the demon armies turned on each other, they lost any real chance of taking Vlag. Those Slayers were not going to be able to retake it, by bringing it back into reality Mattie rescued Vlag with basically no help from the rest of the expedition. The battle just served to stop them from killing a bunch of Kislev citizens and potentially being a long term problem. This is an accomplishment, don't get me wrong, but it's an entirely seperate accomplishment from rescuing Vlag.

The non-corrupted inhabitants of Karak Vlag though, them holding out and maintaining the defense of Karak Vlag was pretty integral to this return. If they had fallen and it wasn't just Slayers corrupted, we might have been facing a whole Karak of Chaos Dwarf's which we couldn't have reclaimed by ourselves, and if they had all died the entire expedition would have needed to stop and set up base to prevent Greenskins or Skaven from stealing it.

So, credit for rescuing Vlag goes to Mattie + Vlag's original inhabitants and no one else. At least in my book.

I didn't have a vote for what approach to take with Karak Vlag because none would have achieved better than this, and Mathilde has a lifetime of knowing how to manage paranoia.

That's actually exactly the thing I've thought when I saw no break Firnagzen voting; that Mathilde's background gave her an automatic success on the task.

I think it worked out as well as it could, better, even. I honestly expected a daemon-infested ruin, though it makes sense why it wasn't.

We've just seen it I think? The Vlag dwarf paranoia wouldn't let the Protector register in the right way?
Not necesarily. There still pretty high chance that they will remember her, and will be very grateful later.

I been convinced that we should check the combes, in case there an army of Skavens or CDs waiting to raid us.

Not that I'm voting for him, but I do find it amusing that last turn there was a huge push to talk to Cyrston von Danling on the grounds his "seasonal attunement" was suspicious.

Then we have the battle of the pass and-

You know that Cyrston pulled at least some weight because you saw three shades of magic shoving the higher Daemon's attempt at spellcasting off-kilter, and his own description of the battle lines up with that: he watched it for any attempts at spellcasting and jumped in when it happened, as well as keeping an eye on the Daemonettes in case any of them turned out to have a concealed talent for magic. Perhaps one could criticize and say that he should have had an opportunity or two to deploy Summer Heat or Winter Frost, but it's just as valid to say that his job was to counterspell and he did that, and if he had started slinging magic he might have missed any other enemy spellcasters that could have been present. In any case, he seems in good spirits after this blooding and you leave him to his meditation.

Basically he did the minimum possible to avoid blatantly doing nothing at all, casting no attack magics and the only verifiable counterspell was when two other wizards were already counterspelling.

I mean, does he really seem less suspicious now?

Oh, I completely agree, but by the time I was awake and interacting with the vote, he was way too far behind to do anything about it, so I've been saving my breath. Next week, though.

I interpreted it as that the usual methods would bounce, so Protector helped Mathilde with the inspiration of exactly what to say that would succeed as much as possible, given the Vlag paranoia.
Now, to be fair, we were using the +S level coin of 'don't notice me'
Mathilde was mostly using the Coin on Gambler, so the only one who knows if it was actually helping her stealth rather than 'finding stuffs', is Boney.

So, regarding punting the task of "dealing with Vlag" to Thorgrim, does anyone else think Mathilde is taking a small amount of glee in anticipating his headaches regarding the task? Also, the logistical challenges of getting aid to Karak Vlag, given how far away it is from every other Dwarf-hold.

There was a time that Kislev kept some of its treasures in Dwarven vaults. Unfortunately, they were the vaults of Karak Vlag.
This means that presumably, Kislev will be very happy about the Karak's return, once the inhabitants decide that they can trust what they're seeing not to be a demonic trick.

He may be sus, but it suggests to me that he needs more experience... and then he'll be Jade, not green.

I could make a strong argument that history shows we're not very good at getting an impression of people based on a first or second meeting, and thus should be doing it more.

Hmm. Thinking about it some more, for the current leg of the journey, the main threats are: The Chaos Dwarves, The Skaven, and that Lord of Change that fucked off in this direction.

We can't do much about the Lord of Change, but we can go look at the Chaos Dwarves (and given the voting lead that seems nigh-inevitable) and the Skaven. At least with the Skaven we have prior experience scouting their positions and can reasonably expect to find out whether they're going to move on the expedition or Karak Vlag without tipping them off that we were there.

So I'm adjusting my vote:

[x] Ranging far ahead of the convoy
[x] Citharus, Barbitus, and Timpania
[x] Visit Uzkulak, the Chaos Dwarf equivalent to Barak Varr
[x] Visit the combes that Qrech told you about
[x] Thane Borek Forkbeard
[x] Head Engineer Gotrek Gurnisson
[x] Head Ranger Snorri Farstrider
[x] Preceptor Joerg von Zavstra
[x] Sir Ruprecht Wulfhart the Younger

Ranging ahead, visiting Uzkulak, and visiting the Moulder combes all seem like they would contribute useful intel to the expedition.

Imo we should finish up meeting with our fellow leaders and our subordinates before we head into more hostile territory.

As someone who doesn't want to go to the Chaos Dwarf city at this time while accompanying a large expedition of regular dwarves and while about to go deeper into the Chaos Wastes where any Chaos-aligned or corrupted artifacts we pick up could really bite us in the ass...

I'm approval-voting the most successful options that don't involve going there.

In a spherical magical void maybe. Taking into account the circumstances we are is you should probably consider the people inf front of you not abstract institutions of slavery far too vast to influence.
I mean if you want to bring our specific circumstances into this, we are considering dragging unvetted prime Chaos temptation bait into the mouth of hell, or abandoning them to promptly get re-enslaved as they try to cross hundreds of miles of hostile territory to reach something that passes for safety. The spherical magical void of economics was the kind interpretation of this particular brainstorm at this specific place and time.

The deeper I dig, the worse this brainstorm gets. We can always buy every slave in sight with looted Kurgan silver and/or send Belegar our letter of resignation and begin fomenting La Resistance on the way back.

This argument kindof sounds like 'you hate capitalism and yet you participate by having a smartphone. Curious.'

Scene:

<Elf maidens / swordmasters of Hoeth silently crying in the market.>

<Sees a Grey Magister, implores her to buy them so they'll have a chance to escape being ritual fodder or something>

Mathilde be like: Lol, sorry I cant support institutionalized slavery! Dont worry though Ill probably get around to ending the slave trade in AP hell. 🙄

<Proceed to ignore the direct good she can do because it doesnt jive with her high horse ethics.>

... Sometimes the only good thing you can do is survive the system ya know?
This isn't seven degrees of Foxconn. This is maybe two degrees of paying the kinds of mercs that Petrescu quietly knifed and dumped in the latrine before we even joined the Expedition, to enable them to go out reaving with the intent to condemn at least one of the traumatized survivors they leave in their wake to exactly the hell we are patting ourselves on the back for saving someone from.

So either own up to increasing suffering, stab a slaver, or tough out the emotional trauma until we are on our return leg and hopefully have vastly more options.

We would not be gong there with the expedition. We have shadowsteed, they do not. Also any 'artifact' vote might be better serves for... well buying stuff. Simply refusing to go there also blinds us to any information we may get on say troop mobilization.
