...What the actual hell. Did...
Did Pokemon make a Magical Girl reference?
I like how they appear to have not only given the girls a transformation, they gave
the Pokemon their own (less elaborate) transformation.
"Once I get the others we can explain everything properly." Usagi promises, taking a step closer to the gorgeous tall girl, slowly taking one of the girl's hands in her own, "Please. I know this is all confusing. That everything is happening way too fast, but if you just..."
"I..." Makoto starts, but she shakes her head. "I... I can't. Usagi this is too much. What the hell happened back there?"
USAGI ROLL: 1+12=13
[Fail]
[NAT 1: Failure Decreased to CRITICAL FAILURE]
The girl sighs, but after a moment she nods. "Okay. I can at the very least explain the very basics." Usagi takes a long, deep breath, before she raises a hand, mildly gesturing with one finger, while her other hand cradles her elbow in hand. "So... the first thing that you need to know is that there was a kingdom, a long time ago. Like... the Longest Time ago, before all the other kingdoms, before... well, everything of our history as it is now." Usagi explains, "So long ago that no one remembers it anymore, and everything about it has been lost - What was it that Ami said... 'Fact eventually becomes History, but if it is not properly recorded, it eventually becomes Legend'." Usagi quotes, " 'In time, the truth of Legend is lost, becoming Myth, before being reinterpreted entirely'. One of the things Ami mentioned was the idea that like, All of the gods of Greek myth were probably real people." Usagi starts to explain, a statement that simply causes Makoto to raise an eyebrow. "And that like... They met on the actual Olympus Mons, the biggest mountain in the entire solar system on... Mars? I think? And that they were like the Diet of the Solar System or something!"
"Anyways," Usagi begins again, pulling herself back to the topic, "The Silver Millennium was the best empire, it had space and planets and starships and all these things that we don't have anymore." Makoto blinks, trying her best to keep up with the deluge of information being thrown her way. "But eventually, there were a bunch of bad guys, and..." Usagi starts to trail off for a moment. "They were lead by a lady from Earth, and like, she thought that the Prince of Earth was her boyfriend, but he wasn't and she couldn't stand that, so she decided to destroy everything."
Poor Makoto's brain.
"And like, they succeeded," Makoto raises an eyebrow, before looking up to the blue sky filled with sunlight.
Makoto: "...In blowing up the sun."
Usagi: "Like, mostly succeeded."
Makoto: "They...
mostly... blew up the sun?"
Yes,
@Lunaryon .
Yes. You have managed to make this so good, I don't even
regret the loss of Mistaken Jovian Princess Hypothesis.
Though it may appear in an omake at some point if the muses smile... I suppose we can't really call it a Negaverse omake in this particular setting, can we?
they killed a bunch of people and a bunch of different princesses, including the princess of the princesses, but then the queen of all queens did a queen thing and tried to make sure that everyone lived by killing everyone and making them come back now during the modern day."
Essentially correct! Essentially confusing!
Perfect
Usagi clearly believes the complicated mess that she is telling Makoto, but really... so much of what the girl is saying is completely implausible. The funny thing is that it is not the idea of there being some kind of solar system spanning government that rings false to Makoto, though she also knows that if something like that actually existed, then someone would have certainly found something by now...
...We have
got to get her those bracelets.
No, it is the idea that the downfall of what is supposed to be the greatest civilization in human history being wrought by a Yandere...
Okay... When phrased like that, she can definitely see a Yandere trying to take down an entire empire because her obsession didn't like her back, but the idea of a single person managing to bring down an entire Empire alone.
In this case, the act seems to have revolved around little more than leaving the back door open...
Maybe the way that Usagi has been describing the kingdom that she supposedly is reincarnated from sounds... incomplete, more like the kind of response that someone who fully believes a nation's propaganda would sound, but at the same time, whatever happened to her mind, whatever happened to the minds of those two boys...
According to Usagi that was caused by the Yandere lady who tried to destroy the solar system before. And who might have succeeded, due to the fact that only Earth is inhabited now.
Whatever is the cause of all this is still wrong, and terrible besides.
Thankfully, after a few more moments of arguing, the two boys turn their backs to each other, stomping in different directions, meaning that she won't have to intervene in a fight between them.
I knew we could count on her.
The door to the Phone booth opens, and Usagi steps out, almost immediately, the girl glances between the two boys, a worried look on her face. "Did... Do they look like they might be under the effect of the Youma?" The girl asks, as a thoughtful look appears on her face.
"I'm nearly certain of it." Makoto responds, to which Usagi simply gives a short 'ah', then closes the door to the booth.
"Moon Prism Power." The words on the other side of the wooden door are muffled, but there is a flash of light around the seam of the door, and then the door opens to reveal a mysterious blonde stranger.
The stranger is dressed in a sailor fuku, and casually steps around Makoto, moving with a speed and a grace unlike anything that Makoto has ever seen before.
Makoto looks between the empty phone booth, and the girl who stepped out of it. Where...
Where did Usagi go? Her eyes go to the booth, then to the stranger, and then back to the booth again. There is something... An explanation, but the girl can't...
There is something there that can explain this all, but it is like trying to grab steam with a butterfly net. Nothing about any of this fits together. How did Usagi disappear, and where did she go?
And on top of that, who was that stranger that just stepped out of the phone booth?

Bullshit-tier cognitohazard identity protection, what did I tell y'all?
Usagi steps into an empty phone booth. Makoto
watches her step into the phone booth.
There is a flash of light.
A girl with Usagi's height, build, general appearance,
and PREPOSTEROUSLY distinctive hairstyle steps out of the phone booth.
The phone booth is now empty.
Makoto sees all of this. She thinks:
"Who is this mysterious sailor-suited stranger, and what has she done with Usagi? There must be... some... explanation!?"
I'm starting to feel sorry for the youma. Their inability to figure this shit out is cast in a
very sympathetic light now.
But before she can even try and figure out what is going on, the mysterious girl turns back around, smiling at Makoto. "Alright, now that that is done, let's hurry onto your house."
"Who are you?" Makoto asks, a question that causes the mysterious girl to blink, looking completely confused.
The mysterious girl looks down at herself for a moment, before pausing and laughing in a very familiar way, almost like... Like...
Poor Makoto's brain.
"I... see..." Makoto says, but it is clear from the way she slowly nods, the look on her face, and the tone of her voice that she does not understand at all. Usagi opens her mouth, preparing to say something more, but Makoto just holds her hands out, "No. No. Usagi, no more today." She almost begs, and Usagi deflates a little, but nods.
NO MORE EXPLAINING PLEASE! HAVE MERCY!
Hahahahaha...
Of course, Makoto, there is more today.
And of course, due to Ami being a Senshi, by the time that Usagi and Makoto manage to arrive at Makoto's apartment, Ami, Luna and Naru have all already arrived.
Ah, good, Luna's here. So we
do have Makoto's transformation pen.
Phew!
"Still, you managed to speak it!" Usagi practically crows. "I know how to say like..." The girl trails off, looking down at her hands, slowly counting on her fingers. "I can say like a dozen words in High Lunar."
All around the room, eyes roll... and for the first time in close to five years... Makoto feels like she is home.
D'awww.
Luna hisses, sounding extraordinarily angry, even for a cat. "A Want-It-Need-It spell." the cat begins to explain, as she starts to pace back and forth across Makoto's living room. "It is a very complicated type of enchantment magic, but one that has the ability to be horrifically effective in the hands of even someone who doesn't understand how to best use them." Luna elaborates. "You see, actual, full on control of the mind is very difficult. There are so many things going on inside of people's heads... Maybe not Usagi's, but most people's."
"Hey!" Usagi complains, but there is no real heat to her voice.
[Middle School... Teacher... EXPERIENCE!]
To be fair, there are
clearly many things going on in Usagi's head. I suspect that individually most of them are even fairly sensible,
mostly. They just don't fit together very well. Brain full of jigsaw puzzle pieces.
"Not unless the spell was set to put this contest's priority higher and more important than the lives of yourself and others." Luna answers, a sobering realization as to just what this spell might mean.
Yep. Dunno if we can break this before the contest, but we have to at least try...
Hm.
IDEA.
We blow up the youma, then warn the police. They run around finding the talent show participant/victims and sit on them all until the mind control wears off.
...No, that won't work. If the mind control is still functional with the youma dead, a lot of them will probably violently resist being detained, and there'll be a lot of chaos. Honestly it may be
worse than just letting them obsessive-compulsively practice their acts for three days. Plus, the mind control may not wear off on its own for a LONG time.
Hm. New best case scenario! We blow up the youma (pretty sure it's
this one, impersonating Mikan), run off Jadeite if he's present, then coordinate with the
remaining judges and formerly-possessed human staff of the talent show to run the event in such a way that

...
Almost immediately, Usagi's head snaps up, back to looking at Ami. "That's right, that was what I was starting towards. Ami, can you find where the Cinderella Caravan's main officers are? More than likely, that is where the Youma will be staying until the Contest on Sunday... Hopefully..."
"Done." Ami says, causing Usagi's eyes to snap up in confusion towards the girl. Sure, Ami might be smart, but there is no way that she is...
Ami sits next to Luna, a heavy phonebook in hand, with one finger resting on a single line... "Bwa?" Usagi manages out, a squawk of confused surprise so primal and perfect that it sets everyone in the room into a short break of giggles.
"The Phonebook also includes Addresses, Usagi." Ami explains, "So finding their offices was easy."
Ah, yes, one of those lost artifacts of Second Millenium technology.
The phonebook.
"Oh... Okay." The girl blinks, before looking at Ami with a challenging look, "Okay then, do you know who the one male judge for the Contest was?"
"Mystery Judge ID DC 15" AMI ROLL: 10 + 9 = 19

[NAT 10: Success increased to CRITICAL SUCCESS]
"Actually," Naru says with what is possibly the smuggest grin that Usagi has ever seen, Naru holds up a piece of paper - The Flyer that announced the Competition in the first place!
1) Hm. Rolling at a +9. That was an Intrigue check from Ami, I think.
2) I imagine the following thought guilty thought:
Makoto: "Usagi is a wonderful friend to have, even aside from the magic, and I think I'll be glad I met her for the rest of my life... but... if we are fighting a solar-system destroying kingdom of demons, it's kind of a relief to know she isn't the brains of the outfit after all."
Laying the flyer out on the table, Naru points down to a part of the flyer, which proudly announces the names of the judges participating in the contest:
Mikan Shiratori - The star of the Cinderella Caravan Idol Company
Misuzu Takahashi - The lead singer of the band DALI
Momoka Kurumi - The Darling Model of Kibōgahana Studio
Masaya Onosaka - The head of Talent for the Dynasty Konnections Idol Company
For a long moment, the five stare down at the flyer.
"You don't think..." Naru begins,
"It couldn't be." Luna agrees
"But... it might..." Ami begins to argue.
"Couldn't be what?" Makoto argues, when Usagi brings her hand down to the final name on the flyer.
"Dynasty Konnections." She says, "With a K." She follows up, "As in DK. The Dark King-" Usagi stops, "Did the Dark Kingdom really use the word Dynasty to try and hide themselves?" She asks, clearly baffled. "They couldn't really have not only used a word that describes a kingdom, but is also a pun?"
The two girls and cat who understand what Usagi mean look to each other, now finding themselves lost.
"Pun?" Naru asks, but Makoto is the one who groans.
"Die Nasty." She confirms, a statement which makes everyone who isn't Usagi groan. "But just who are the Dark Kingdom guys anyways?"
I'm imagining this being the English dub of an alternate-history version of the show, with the original Japanese being some other, entirely different kanji-based pun that's far more subtle.
Anyway,
yep. Current head of talent for the Dark Kingdom. Thaaat's Jadeite. And after what happened to Marshmallow Monster, he's probably traveling with some muscle, just so he doesn't have to soil his hands splattering a platoon of JDSF commandos.
USAGI ROLL: 9+12=21
[Success]
"I thought I explained this earlier," Usagi grouses. "The Dark Kingdom are..." Usagi trails off, bringing her hands up and clapping them right below her chin, resting the tips of her forefingers right on the center of her chin. "The Dark Kingdom are bad. Like... The worst." Usagi starts off with. "Everything we know. Our entire lives, the whole of the world have been shaped by the Dark Kingdom, in the worst way. The Silver Millennium was so much better, like I explained before, with things beyond anything that modern science can comprehend." The girl goes quiet for another moment.
"All because one woman wanted a man that she couldn't have." Usagi continues, a statement which makes everyone else look at her.
"Usagi?" Luna asks, and there is a thoughtful look on the girl's face.
"I... I can remember seeing her before. Queen Beryl, or Metallia, or whatever it is that she calls herself. I remember speaking with her, trading flowers. Asking her for advice... I remember her kindness, but at the same time, when I see her face in my head, I am filled with a rage that I do not understand." Usagi says, and her hands are shaking. "I don't know why... No, that's a dumb question. I know exactly why I feel this anger towards her, she ruined all of our lives by destroying the Silver Millennium, and I know why... I know why she did what she did, but why did she do it?" The question is one that is hard to answer, maybe even impossible.
"She... Metallia, Beryl, whatever." There is a sharpness to Usagi's tone, and something that sounds almost like an accent slipping through. "The demons she called from the dark destroyed everything, and now they want to do it again. I... we... The Silver Millennium couldn't stop her before. I can't let that happen again." Everyone is quiet for a few moments, digesting what Usagi had to say.
Wow. She really nailed the explanation this time.
I wonder if she'd have unlocked some more memories on a 10 and a natural crit?
"Okay." Makoto's words are quiet, but in the silence of the apartment, they seem to almost echo. "I don't really understand any of this... Silver thing, or this not being dead thing, or any of it. But this Dark Kingdom, it wants to destroy the world, right?"
The other four nod, and Makoto nods back. "Then I'll do whatever I can to help." She states, "If these things want to hurt people..." After a second, she shakes her head. "I won't let that happen." There is a weight to the Girl's words, and after a moment, Ami smiles.
"Hey," Ami starts off, "You don't have to fight if you don't want to."
"But I do." Makoto says, eyes alight with a fierce desire to protect the world.
KNEW we could count on this girl.
[qutoe]"Then you're going to need a little help." The girl says, an almost feral grin on her face as well. "Youma resist regular damage something fierce, and without some kind of magic to help protect yourself, then you'll end up getting badly hurt."
"So how do I get magic?" Makoto asks, a statement that only makes Ami grin larger, as she reaches into a pocket, pulling out her transformation pen.
"To start with, we cheat." Ami states straight out, "Mercury Power, Make up!" A flash of light, and Ami is transformed into the Warrior of Knowledge, Sailor Mercury.[/quote]I am
glad we are giving her opportunities to shine.
Holding a hand out, there is a much smaller flash of light over the girl's hand, revealing the Mercury Super Computer. "The Mercury Supercomputer has a whole slew of functions designed to help tap into the magical channels of people." Ami explained, "With it's help, I was able to figure out how to use my magic without transforming, and do the same for Usagi."
SPOILER= Magical Awakening (Makoto) DC 15
AMI ROLL: 5+18+9=32
[CRITICAL SUCCESS]
Now, after everything else, all the discussions about strange space empires, evil contests and demonic kingdoms...
This is the part where the evening actually starts to get weird. Ami holds out her hand, and the Mercury Supercomputer, almost as if she were planning on handing it over to Makoto.
"Take hold of the Mercury Supercomputer, from there I can run a program that will send magical energy from me into you, helping awaken your own magic." Ami explains.
After a moment of trepidation, Makoto does just that. Taking hold of one end of the device, she can feel something... A deep hum runs out of Ami, down through the device, and into the taller, dark haired girl.
This power... This energy, it feels so right... yet so wrong. All across the girl, electricity begins to spark and pop, tiny arcs of power rising up off her body, before lashing out and fading away into nothingness.
Makoto's eyes glow, and floating there... across the girl's forehead is a symbol that three of the four have seen before. The fourth has also seen the symbol, just somewhere different.
"Jupiter." Mercury says in surprise.
...
...It seems that Makoto is actually the reincarnation of the Princess of Jupiter - One of the reincarnated Sailor Senshi.
And, to my considerable relief because I missed her arrival on the first read-through, we have Luna handy, which means we have her transformation pen.
Do you plan on waiting until Sunday to deal with the Youma, or go now?
[ ][Cinder] Wait until the Talent Show on Sunday
[ ][Cinder] Go Now, try and find the Demon and stop them now
Trying to stop the youma now was... well, I don't recall if it was my idea in the first place but I've been hoping to try for days. If nothing else, I want to know whether this kind of mind control relies on a
load-bearing youma, because it would be very convenient if that were true. And if it's not, then we're probably no worse off than we were anyway.
well, yeah, it's hard to believe that the silver millennium was actually as perfect as they say.
At the very least they were apparently a bit racists about Earth I think. And we know so little about them that there could have been many other problems we don't know about.
After all, the present world has so many problems we either don't know about, or tend to ignore out of habit and a "not my problem/can't do anything about it" mentality...
To be fair, at least it seems to have been a largely post-scarcity magitech civilization, so most of the
usual causes of human suffering would be ameliorated. It surely wasn't perfect, but it was a damn sight better than what came after.
goes to check quickly he's still on a sailor moon quest, and not a my little pony one.
Given this quest's penchant for crossovers, it cannot be ruled out that Equestria exists in a parallel dimension in the same multiverse, though an actual crossover may not materialize; things might get complicated.
...is this Jadeite's idea of a joke?
Well, we're
already working to destroy him and everything he's spent his post-possession lifetime working for, so I guess there's not much we can add on the pile for the terrible evil pun.
