"He brought a warhammer to a knife fight,"
That thing Robert uses is a maul.
A proper warhammer is actually small enough to use in a close combat situation. Not exactly a knife fight..... But you would have much less trouble.

The Tyrells need someone to explain the current situation to them. This is not something that they can play off. Prior arrangements have become undone. And now they have no protector and nothing to offer.

Their position is one of a defeated enemy. Beg for forgiveness or suffer more than humiliation and loss of influence. We are not Robert. We don't need you.

We have extremely different views of "interfering in our business".

@Crake, I'll agree with you that the Tyrells are self-serving and untrustworthy (their current Lord betrayed us during Robert's Usurpation for example).
However AFAIK in this quest the Tyrells have been a total non-issue for us. I literally can't remember them acting against us, unless you count "made an unwide deal with the Court of Stars for defense against the Deep Ones and the Devils" as a deliberate act against us.

What do you call trying to leverage their relationship with splintered factions, only one of which we are not presently in conflict with, in order to squeeze more out of us
Similarly, here your immediate reaction was to assume that they're doing this to fuck with us specifically, while my immediate assumption was that they were simply securing their powerbase and maintaining useful alliances, which is after all step one in any sort of long-term thinking (including all non-treasonous long-term thoughts). They probably don't even have detailed long-terms plans, and are just doing this is a good overall move!
Maybe I'm crazy, but from the tone of the update I got the impression that they've been cowed by our magical nuke and don't intend to try blackmailing us or anything.

To put this into perspective. There are three regions right now in our Imperium who enjoy a special status. Braavos, Volantis and Dorne. Those three are massive land kingdoms. Braavos and Volantis both enjoy special status due to their influence on Viserys and their sworn fealty. Dorne has not only sworn fealty but has also been in silent support of us since the time before we were level 10. I am not up for adding the Tyrells into that league of special status.

I had the opposite read. Let's see who's correct.

I have zero faith in their good intentions, rationality or even ability. The one thing that could convince me that I was wrong would be reaffirming their loyalty without any clauses and then offering to smooth things over with the remnant Fey, without expectation of reward.

I might even find it in myself to smile, in the unlikely event that Mace Tyrell can take initiative, and not immediately fuck it up.

No matter what they say we should make it clear that the day of the Tyrells being the Masters of the Reach is gone. They will merely be another vassal in the region. No more. No less.

I can't... even fucking process this. We just have really opposed views of "what is inconsequential".

They are pretty much the leading reason why we had to deal with the Fey this way. Why we could not meet them under other circumstances and develop our own impressions, uncolored by internal biases, and perhaps offered to fulfill the role that they wanted to take up, one which they certainly had no right toward, under any law they served under.

I'm not saying we would have actually done that, but I would have found the entire situation much less frustrating, and much less contemptible.

And you say "unwise", completely downplaying how fucking stupid the entire thing was, and yet Aedon and Aurane are idiots because they are just generally shitty people on top of having inconvenient plans which we had to bend over backwards to pull ourselves up and over.

We just sacrificed several thousand demons to unfuck their mess!

HOW IS THAT NOT WORSE?!

We just sacrificed several thousand demons to unfuck their mess!
I'm sorry for being flippant, but... Anything that kills lots of demons is a good thing, right?
:p

More seriously, the Tyrells made that pact because they were in a shit situation. It's not like they could easily say no, could they? Do you want this powerful Fey court as your enemies, or as your inconvenient allies against your many even more horrible enemies?
And of course all that they're really losing is the free will of some peasants, and they personally are gaining lots of power and wealth! Pay no attention to the incredibly magically-enhanced social-fu of the Mythic Fey who is proposing this, no sir...

I don't like the Tyrells and some sick burns would be fun, but I don't think they're the literal antichrist either. They're just normal selfish asshole nobles.

The only way the Tyrells survive is if:
1. They sever any and all ties with the Azure Court, leaving them with no particularly special benefits which was the goddamn point of balkanization in the first place.
2. They accept that they are no longer players in the Great Game, and that as far as they are concerned there is no longer a game to play. As far as I'm concerned they shouldn't be bargaining with us at all. They had a deal already. Like hell they get additional terms. We can play this asinine game of "but they're not actually vassals yet", except we hashed out terms with Willas and he accepted on behalf of his entire House.

If they try to wheedle and bargain, we decide just how much they lose. Highgarden can go to any number of more loyal and reasonable lords or ladies. I'm with @Crake, I'm ten levels of done with their shit.

I don't know if it's my normal crappy memory or the exhaustion, but we made contact with another Fey Court in Westeros relatively recently and I cannot remember what they were called. They were guarding a large tree that rested along side the stump from another, which had been cut down eons ago by traitorous Humans. I think they had a beef with the Court of Stars, though?

Can someone remind me who this was? Should we get in contact with them soon and speak about what we just did to the CoS?

Goldenwood? The one with the mythic dryad?

I thought her beef was with the Seven?

Is that the Golden Court? The one with that ancient Dryad ancestor of House Rowan or something.

We should definitely talk to her and finalize her fealty. And the fealty of the rest of the Westerosi courts.

Also because this thing has made me think deeply about the Imperium I also realize where our successor states would originate from. It would be Volantic and Braavos (Obviously) and Dorne. Now I kind of want to see a Warring states era event with the splintering of the Imperium. Sorcerors Deep becomes this status symbol of legitimacy for any would be unifier.

Oh, Mace, you son of a bitch. All this time and you still don't understand what it is you agreed to? Just because we couldn't have the court? Are you fucking kidding me?

To be fair, Viserys does have sometimes this tendecy in the quest of "all things are mine, ether now or tin the future" we are a targaryen after all.

Viserys has always been Batman for me. If he finds anyone other than Lya uncommonly attractive I start planning to kill them. Clearly they're about to stab us in the back.

People here forget when he told the dorne girl she like the demon girl? is clearly horned girl are his thing.

Now, my only question is....what exactly can the tyrell do now? I mean we nuke the hell out of his forces, it seen they just want to pretend they didnt lose that badly and well...no dying in retribution, so let them be the king of their sand castle and move on, specially since the deep ones are on the movie.

Against us directly? Not much. But retaining influence among other Houses in the Reach? If we don't curb this immediately, that's the prize they're going for by binding themselves to the Azure Court. That directly conflicts with our goals in balkanizing Westeros in the first place.

Tyrells are quick to assume we'll be crowning outselves immediately.
It's the thing for the end of the 4th month, though.

How likely do y'all think it is, that in but a month's time they'll find more ways to fuck up?

The talk about re-alignjng with different courts has me thinking the poor bastards may try to show a united front with one of the remaining Fey polities, in an effort to get some influence in our eventual Empire.
The thought makes me want to burn things.

Unrelated, reading the chapter about the illithid forces, our defense groups seem inadequate again.

We need counters to thousands of chumps they field, counters to "aetherial assasin"-types, and counters something to throw at the CR18 monsters to try and slow them down.
@Azel, @Goldfish, I dont trust myself with making countermeasures. I'll go overboard and bankrupt us.
These here are the basic defense groups we use:

Cant we just asing someone to overside everything there and make them clear they are answer to us? I mean we did the equivalent of Aegon did before in the conquest, maybe marry some chararter of us with a tyrell and deal with this.

If they agree to break all ties with the Azure Court and not try to gather more influence and sit quietly to the sidelines for the rest of the quest then they're not in danger. What has people pissed off now is they're overreaching yet again in the name of influence they don't deserve. Their best chance of survival is recognizing when to quit playing.

As far as marriages, they're definitely not getting a beneficial marriage after this mess.

I have an entire Prestige Class of BEING FUCKING DONE WITH TYRELLS.
You're looking at the is wrong way. Clearly the political geniuses of the Tyrell inner circle have realized the greatest thing they have to offer us is an excuse. They're just currying favor to the best of their abilities by serving one up on a silver platter.

I for one think we should reward this as it deserves to be rewarded; with a nice white elephant to make them feel better about losing everything of substance that they own.

This is putting a dirty band-aid on an already festering wound.

You can clearly see where I'm going with this.

Regardless of the reasoning, the terms we dictate, by necessity, will limit their ability to influence the Reach. If they find that unacceptable, clearly, CLEARLY by the comment that we 'threw a tantrum over being told no' or 'Father above Viserys, its just some PEASANTS being enslaved, you killed REAL PEOPLE THOUGH!!! THAT'S EVIL!" find survival to be "optional" and bottomless ambition to the point of insanity to be the order of the day.

I can accept some kookie characters in our retinue. Qyburn is off his rocker, we have a Chain Devil who looks like she stepped off the set of Hellraiser and would enjoy making it an underground subculture like goths in the Imperium, and might even achieve success at it. And most of the Companions have at least one character trait that would send the average person screaming for the hills if taken into their confidence unprepared.

But I cannot abide rank stupidity.

Oh it was more like "you marry we me and I deal with this with you being just there" as polite way to thell them "stay there and be pretty".

I can accept some kookie characters in our retinue. Qyburn is off his rocker

Challaing a elder brain and them becoming some sort of a lithid is waaaaaaay beyond that but so far Qyburn is easy to deal because he is loyal, if visery is top and the next guy promise more bodies and whatever pet proyect he wants he will probably jump at that.

So far it seen Olanna just understood they lose and maybe trying some nice gesture to said "we are sorry, you won".

I mean we can take some of them as prisioner to hammer the point we are not dicking around a this point.
