Why is it dangerous or why is Robert more likely to endure?

The first because it's broken and there are fiends fishing in it, the second because he is Robert Baratheon. Cut away the fat and sorrows of kingship, give him a soul-stealing monster to fight with his bare hands and he is quite likely to tear it apart.

.....That hopefully is not foreshadowing that we see Robert returned as some champion of Asmodeus or something...

Many forget that despite his absolutely ineptitude at rulership, and the years of terrible self-care, Robert Baratheon was a supreme badass.

He didn't get the title "Demon of the Trident" for nothing, he broke Rhaegar like a twig and if given the opportunity to fight in his prime with all the gear he has now, he might actually be a serious threat to one or more of our Companions
He was admittedly a badass, but only when the peak of Human ability capped out at 10th level, and even that was exceedingly rare, while the vast majority never made it past 5th level.

Now if he hadn't been ruined by becoming a king, and had instead continued to train and adventure when the magic came back, he could be a high level Mythic martial warrior by now.

We must seek out this hypothetical AU!Robert and challenge him to Mortal Kombat.

Naaaah, that's more likely to be Rhaegar.

SInce we never went on to grab his ashes, restore the body with a Miracle, and then slap as strong a "you cant rezz this guy"-curse on it, ye?

Paranoid, they said.
No chance either Rhaegar or Mad Dad would come back from their respective afterlives, they said.

If Rhaegar shows up I'm going to enjoy putting him back in his grave.

Damn, that would actually fuck Viserys up to fight, how has no one from hell or otherwise managed to get ahold of their souls and throw that at us?

how has no one from hell or otherwise managed to get ahold of their souls and throw that at us?
"yet".
Hasn't thrown at us yet.

I've no dbout that once Viserys showed himself to be a major disruption, all parties scooped any souls of relevance to try and mold Anti-Viserys units out of them.

We made personal enemies with an Archdemon, we disrupt operations of Asmodeus and fucked with Mammon to the point the snek likely got an aneurism.
...Also Pale Lady of Daemons got shafted because we are just that good at pissing off assholes of their caliber.
No idea if any close relatives went to Daemons tho'.
If Rhaegar shows up I'm going to enjoy putting him back in his grave.
Oh, that much is a given.
It is just a necessity to keep in mind that Mad King and Rhaegar might just come back at one point or the other and try and fuck shit up.

In this timeline he didn't let himself go nearly as much as in canon.

Most of his canon-decline was after the Greyjoy Rebellion and at that point in the quest we gave him us as a target a few months later.
He has never stopped training and keeping in good shape.

Admittedly, he isn't out adventuring and we have no reason to believe he cracked the level 10 border, but I'm quite sure he at least stayed there.

Well yes, but Rickard credibly plays bodyguard to a adult dragon with access to 9th level spells.
In terms of sheer combat power versus individuals... I place Richard firmly underneath Viserys, and just 'cause he doesn't have tactical nukes on speed dial.

And when he gets access to upgraded AoE Swording, he will actually be able to appreciably mow down armies pretty quickly.

Ah the fun it would be to use him like that.

"Your grace! 10000 mercenaries gathered from far and wide are attacking!"

"I'm busy reading, tell Richard to sword them."

Edit: Just realized how much Richard would be shocked by that.

Richard: Wait... He isn't flying straight into the army by himself? No trying to talk them around? No negotiating with some murder dragon to take care of it for him and risk being eaten? He is just going to sit back read a book and let me deal with it?

Richard peers around suspiciously. "I didn't think any fiend could snare me in illusions in the Deep, what plot are they trying to enact with this ruse!"

Part MMMDCLXIV: Armor of Flesh and Spirit
Armor of Flesh and Spirit

Fifth Day of the Third Month

You consider your sister's words, and you consider also the fire in Oberyn's eye and the rage in the Hound's burned features before he pledged to you. It probably would be more just to hang Gregor Clegane to all the unknown victims that litter his path through life, but you can spare the thimbleful of fairness for the sake of seeing the bastard die in the one place in which he counted himself supreme, battle. Tywin kept him as a monster leashed to his word. You would see that monster, that myth, broken and perhaps in the doing the man who even now sleeps in the embrace of the Flesh Forge can finally find some peace.

"I'm not leaving to spill blood yet, but rest assured the Mountain will not live to try to protect his master next month," you assure Oberyn.

He laughs mirthlessly. "As though the Mountain would have the balls to fight what you are throwing at the Lannisters. Oh, he'll fight dead knights and giants, sorcerers and dragons, if only for being thick-witted enough to think he can kill anything that bleeds, but show him the Moonchaser and he'll shit his pants and run so fast he'll be leaving a brown streak to track him by." Seeing you look in askance, he adds, "Been talking to the Hound once I got him to take the drinks I bought. Trying to figure which death would hurt the most."

You chuckle approvingly, adding in jest, "You know I'm not entirely sure 'Viper' suits you. According to Vee, snakes don't hold grudges."

"What about dragons?" he asks, almost challengingly.

"Dragons hold grudges that can outlast civilizations," you answer seriously. "Thankfully, the Mountain will not require that sort of dedication. Speaking of battle I have a gift for you. You don't lack for weapons, of course," you nod towards the spear he head left by the door, somewhat in defiance of court protocol, but if that is the worst breach of protocol Oberyn ever causes, you will count yourself lucky.

***

"Ha, light as silk," Oberyn tumbles lightly across the stone floor in his new armor, drawing a giggle from Rhaenys and a tolerant smile from Elia. Not that that would not be a hard thing to defend against if he sprang up spear flashing, but now is not the time to consider how much Oberyn has improved as a warrior.

"It mostly is silk, spider silk to be specific, that and weirwood 'resin' for the plates there," you note.

"So you didn't choose the colors? Was wondering why it's white and red," Oberyn interjected.

"One of the main benefits is that you can wear it under clothes without giving yourself way. I hardly need my inquisitors to dress for their allegiance," you note.

"But inquisitors work for you, don't they?" Rhaenys asks, sounding out the unfamiliar word carefully, frowning in concentration. "Why would they need t' hide what they're doing?"

"Well sometimes they would be working in places beyond the realm," you explain, simplifying the concept. "I would not always want the locals to know I have eyes and ears there, and sometimes they would be working inside the realm to catch people who are doing bad things in secret. If they saw someone in royal colors they might run away before we could catch them, or maybe never show at all."

"Is that what you are going to do tomorrow then, go off to listen to stuff other people want to keep secret and find bad people?" the girl asks. After a moment's thought, she adds, "Does Dorne count as inside or outside the realm? Uncle Doran swore to you, but that was secret."

Oberyn tries to distract her with jests and tumbles, but Rhaenys is having none of it. She wants to know about realms and rulers, preferably everything at once. Well, you can hardly argue the effort isn't commendable for a princess, even one so young.

Still, in pondering her question you ask yourself in turn where should 'Buttercup' journey to and whom should you take as companions on the trip across the Narrow Sea?

Where do you go and whom do you take with you?

OOC: I decided to do the Shadow recovery later when we come back to fey things and just take the moment for a bit of a breather with family. Also Rhaenys' 'work for' rather than the more formal Westerosi 'serve' is intentional. She is young enough that she picked up the local Low Valyrian fast and is now kind of mixing in words from it into her Common.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

[X] Go fix the fire damage in the Stormlands done to that town using a Lyre of Building and magic granted muse. Whether the fire be supernatural or not, a song that smears Tywin Lannister in the doing which results in it being fixed... you don't think people will ever have any one consistent story regarding the feats of Buttercup, which is fine, seeing as how you admittedly are mostly doing this to amuse yourself.

@DragonParadox I don't have time to compose lyrics, but imagine it's a "We Didn't Start the Fire" parody, apropos and topical of ASWaH and Imperial "pop culture". Of which admittedly we mostly are the ones producing. I'm sure there's plenty in there making fun of cowardly old lions.
