Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Hello, Thread! I just finished assimilating the story so far into my dantian through my ear meridians. Kudos to @yrsillar!

I confess, I had almost dropped the story when our heroine joined CRX after a close vote. It made sense from the munchkin perspective: the playerbase got their talent bonus for starting as a street rat and the resources of a ducal scion; and it seems to be working out.

But, I just couldn't see the free-spirited, Chaotic Neutral Ling Qi, whose most significant mentor was a sapient blizzard, and who got along with spirits and demihumans far better than she did with her human peers, submitting so unreservedly and irrevocably to the Lawful Neutral boss. (Once she agreed, my first thought, "So, when's CRX gonna order her to play her flute at a party?")

That said, I am glad that I persevered: while I am sad that Ling Qi's wild adventure was foreclosed, it is very interesting to watch her navigate her new conflicting reality while remaining true to herself.

I don't know how much time I will have to participate in the quest, but I look forward to seeing where this goes.
I would disagree with CN interpretation of Ling Qi. She's TN through and through in animal interpretation of alignment. She react on circumstances and seek her basic needs without much thought of a bigger picture. She may inevitably fuck somebody up in her quest of survival (and in fact did so) but it's not because she's think herself more important that them, but because such is life and it's what everybody does for survival as far as her experience go. She don't do it because it's easy, she do it because it's what she have.

While her leanings when she can afford to think about situation are Good and arguably Lawful. It just before she joined sect she neither had ability nor example of such possibility. She's not good nor lawful as while she likes those concepts in theory she's not ready to trust them. But she hates alternative even more. So while she don't trust Cai to make things different, she trust her at least to try. But her joining Cai while influenced by it is not because of that. It's because Cai offered place to build home and people she can turn back to. Ling Qi despite her short life is enormously and thoroughly tired of this shit and "here we go again" of Thunderdome exemplified how much she don't want that shit any more.

PS. And while Sect could also offer such it's also "this competitive shit again" so it really grates on Ling Qi trust issues. Other options aren't even worth talking about at the stage decision was made.

I would actually peg her as Neutral Good or maybe Chaotic Good, at least at this point of time. She doesn't have any grand all encompassing ideal about changing the world like some good characters do, but aligment isn't all about changing the world. Her code of conduct has almost universally been trying to do right by others, being a good influence, and not letting evil happen around her when she can stop it.

Think about this, for all her proclamations about being a selfish girl and about her social blinders, when the dice are down she spontaneously develops an art to help those who talked behind her back, she consistently tries to be fair and just and be a beneficial presence even to random strangers, she pathologically avoids taking advantage of others, she has consistently been a good influence on her friends, she went out of the way to ensure less war happened even when she didn't consider the enemy quite human and when it would be much more beneficial for her to profit of the war, she treats people and especially spirits more as persons than even Gooder charactrs do... those are just the recent stuff.

Is she perfect? no, but that is not the recquirement to be Good, being Good doesn't mean being a flawless Mary Sue. Has she never committed Evil? She has, objectively, both at the streets and on the outer Sect, and some would argue her social greed for friends is cruel, but DnD allows even evil characters to become good and, I'd argue, so does real life, and, again, good does not mean "always does the right thing" it means "tries to do the right thing (without being a bloody hypocrite or a narcissistic asshole)". Are there characters gooder than her? Yes, on both spectrums of it, we have CRX as the lawful "want to make the world a better place" type, and Su Ling as the chaotic"wants to help those near her" type, but you do not have to be the Goodest person in the world to qualify as Good, or else only 3 people would ever qualify. May be a limitation of DnDs binary system, or it may actually be a strength, that it doesn't distinguish between lesser and greater goods and evils and honours people the same as per their actions and/or intentions (depending on GM , I guess).

One of their talks I enjoyed the most was when CRX was beating herself up hard over nuking the scrubs in the tournament and Ling Qi's attempt at cheering her up basically amounted to "Well, sometimes you turn some folks into collateral, don't worry about it, lol".

I don't think LQ is ever gonna be a real morality chain, because CRX is just way more moral a character than her.
Her role seems to be far more one of reminding CRX that it's okay for her to be human too and that she doesn't need to be impossibly perfect for everyone else.
It's not about morality. It's about the second thing: CRX's perfectionism is the sort of thing that can, in the long run, turn her into a tyrant.

Naw, as Ling Qi is depicted so far, look to the interest areas. She operates...very neutrally:
-Most people - They are there, I am here. Why should I care?
-People in her in group - Mine, whether they're right or wrong, Mine.
-People identified as hostile to her in group - They threaten mine. Hate.
-People hostile to her - "Who?"
-People friendly to her but not in her in group - "Sir, this makes me uneasy."
-Organizations in charge of her - Adapt, get resources out of.
-Organizations under her - "This makes me uneasy."
-Organizations other than that - "Who?"

She reacts a lot like an abused pack animal. Short of trust, unlikely to help or hinder, but if you're in her pack she will move mountains for you.

Where Gan is the True Believer for Renxiang, Ling Qi is the reminder that people will follow their own ideas and whims, many of which aren't rooted in a higher ideal than Mine.

[X] Plan: More Meridians
[X] Turn 11 Plan: Making Do

But why are we doing spine, head, spine? Wasn't the original plan spine, head, head? It's past midnight so maybe I missed something lol.
This 10th head meridian is to allow us to equip RME5+HDW+MoSS which is our general combat/utility suite. Being able to equip HDW, PMR and MSS at the same time was never intended and indeed would take a minimum of 12 head meridians even if we don't have RME equipped; 2 more opening (or an equivalent number of scrunches to hdw) over the planned 10.

To give it more details, RME/HDW/MoSS together can be considered a solid "exploration/combat" set up, where if we meet strange spirits or barbarians we can still talk to them. HDW/PMR can be considered 'talking to a single person we don't share a language with if we really need to', HDW/MSS can be considered 'talking in a social group who don't share a language'... but our actual social suite in safe space is PMR/MSS.

I wonder, is that fair to her?

-Not caring for the day to day of most people is not necessarilly neutral, when said people are in danger, however, she seems to act to protect even if she doesn't have the social grace to stay for the aftermath
-There hasn't yet been a "whether they are wrong, mine" event for people in her ingroup that ended up in her wronging others. Closest I have seen is when she helped that girl to find a spirit to pay for Hanyi's mischief , and rather than double down, she chastised Hanyi and paid back the debt manyfold. Sure, she protected Hanyi from most of the consequences of her actions, but that is not quite what comes to mind when we talk about a neutral character's "mine, right or wrong" attitude.
-people identified as hostile to her in group- ummm... again, citation needed, most of said hostile people were either ginormous assholes or enemy combatants, and she actually doesn't seem to outright hate either. Depersonalise some? yes, but she doesn't actually seem to hate anyone. Moreover, she is clearly more reasonable than the average Sect Elder when it comes to that, as she would rather deescalate to avoid harm than fight da enemies
-Not knowing/caring about who randos she barely has contact with are (including organizations)- that's a sociability issue, not a morality issue. She clearly cares enough to spontaneously develop a technique to save their lives, so she does care about them, he is just not social enough to know them.
- Being uneasy about people she is friendly but not too friendly with- when? Only cases she seemed so was with the people who were courting her, subtly or overtly (yes, I am including Xuan Shi). Also, not a morality issue, even if completely true.
- Organizations in charge of her- I think its actually rather that she sees indivinduals, not organizations which, again, not a morality issue. She does want to repay rather than exploit those that help her, its just that she seems to have a hard time giving personhood to organizations.
- Organizations under her- again, not a morality issue.

Honestly, most of the stuff listed here, even if taken at completely face value, prove she is socially ankward and kind of dense(which, duh) , but say nothing about morality, especially in view of several clearly heroic actions. I'd say the difference between her and Gan is the difference of a cynic and an idealist , not a true believer and an opportunist, especially since what made or broke her subordination to Cai was her knowledge of Cai and her ideals, not the money.

It's about the second thing: CRX's perfectionism is the sort of thing that can, in the long run, turn her into a tyrant.

You sound like you mean that CRX is somehow unique in that regard and most other things can't do that, if taken to extreme. But I disagree. Ling Qi sees those out of her group as tools - either protect them or drain them dry to assure your victory. Li Suyin wants cultivators to be virtuos, wants a "hero" - easy tyrant/crazy scientist material. Su Ling wants to protect mortals - easy tyrant material when you take into account that nobles don't do this on their own. Sun Shao just wants a happy family - results speak for themselves. Shenhua wanted to have personal freedom to be whoever she was - she's the tyrant.

It's not about morality. It's about the second thing: CRX's perfectionism is the sort of thing that can, in the long run, turn her into a tyrant.
I'm not really convinced that's how CRX expresses her perfectionism though.
When things aren't as neatly solved as she'd like them to be, she doesn't smash them apart and start over and I don't think that's just because she doesn't have the power to do so yet.
So far she always did the best she could and then felt miserable because in her view she didn't do enough or just wasn't capable of doing better.
I suspect CRX is more liable to just break from pushing herself too hard.

And regarding that, Ling Qi's "role", if she has one, seems more one of making sure CRX gets enough spirit hugs so that she doesn't.
Her primary concern when their domains first touched each other wasn't how inhuman CRX' purity stuff made her feel, but that it made her seem so isolated.
Even if CRX ends up going off the deep end and turning into a tyrant or whatever one day, someone else would have to be the one standing up for the people she oppresses, cause Ling Qi's primary worry would probably be what behaving that way is inflicting on CRX herself.

Ran the numbers for marginal dice costs for turns 12~18, assuming current plan wins for turn 11; sum total of all targets is overdrafted by ~90 points:
Code:
dex SS     :: 26 (+5)
stamina B  :: 6  (+2)
wits A     :: 13 (+3)
resolve S  :: 16 (+3)
presence A :: 11 (+2)
manip S    :: 11 (+2)
comp B     :: 7  (+2)

sable grace S  :: 4
unb.will S     :: 11 (+2)
perception+ A  :: 7
vanishing S    :: 7
athletics+ A   :: 7
dream step A   :: 7
dream step A>S :: 7
woodwind SS    :: 14
empathy+ A     :: 6
s.negotiator S :: 7
spirit ken A   :: 6
war A          :: 7

non-advanced skills (half the point cost of advanced/attributes):
academics C    :: 3
formations B   :: 4
survival B     :: 1
beast hande B  :: 3
art B          :: 4
Notes:
  • Number in parentheses is how many extra dice are needed to guarantee 99%+, otherwise dice number is what's needed for >50%. Matters for actually planning when to put dice in place so we're minimizing the chance of geting screwed over by bad luck.
  • Assumes fade+dreamstep merge, otherwise we'll need to spend points on getting the skill to A at least.
  • unbroken will is expensive but covers 2 skills, and looks like it'll cross a breakpoint for derived armors coupled with resolve S (passives above 60 but below 90). Difference between S30ish and SS though so A is certainly viable.
  • in general, skill mergers are a possibility; we're currently at 7 softcapped skills waiting for an advancement so there's bound to be a few.
  • ETA: also not touching the actual logistics of when to put points since that's fairly involved (different turns have different keywords) and should be done after we decide what we're cutting.
I have some opinions about priorities (e.g resolve S, vanishing S are very high value and we probably want dex/woodwind SS still to take advantage of our uncapped stats), but a more finalized plan is still to be decided.

EDIT: here's an example list that lets us stay within budget:
dex SS
wits A
resolve S
presence A
manip S
comp B

sable grace S
perception+ A
vanishing S
dream step A
woodwind SS
s.negotiator S

academics C
formations B
survival B
beast hande B
art B
stamina B
unb.will S
athletics+ A
dream step A>S
empathy+ A
spirit ken A
war A
- leaves us 6 points 1 point to spare for below average luck and better flexibility arranging things
-- forgot that unb.will A still needs ~2 dice; 2 points to spare. Gonna have to rely on omake for flexibility.
- Still going for s.negotiator S, can instead get empathy+ A.
- other than physical avoid which is backed by S skill+SS attrbiute, other defenses will be S+A.
- dance offense takes a hit but hopefully music focus should cover for it.
- relying on music skill to carry for lower spirit ken
- relying on allies to make up for war B

Looking over the projections of our preferred stats, it's interesting to see what stats get prioritized and which get left by the wayside. It makes you wonder about the stat distribution of other min-max'd entities.

Composure: UUU
Perceptiveness: UUU

Rexiang: ...Mother, how-
Shenhua: Riding horses wasn't a big focus in my training, my Way is the glowing perfect city, and apparently becoming a demigod affects how I "relate" to the short-lived peasants, who knew?

"If I may," Ling Qi began carefully. "May I know something of your grandson, so that I may speak more clearly in my recommendation?"

"Meng Dan is a scholar," Meng Diu said, turning her gaze back to the rest of the guests. "And attends the Blue Mountain Sect, he follows the Way of the Hidden, with more singularity than yourself."

Sixiang chuckled in her head, and Ling Qi coughed uncomfortably. She didn't think Meng Diu was speaking directly against her scattered focus, but still. "I see, you believe his knowledge will be useful then?"

"That child has always been focused on the past, to his detriment at times," Meng Diu said musingly. "However, his mind is sharp and his ability to collate and analyze large amounts of information into useful form is exceptional."

"Well, given your arguments for doing this, that kind of thing does seem useful," Sixiang mused. "You're probably gonna be asked to go over every word and gesture they make with a fine toothed comb when you report in."

It seemed like it, Ling Qi thought. "Thank you very much, Lady Meng."
Archivist of the Hidden Moon huh?
A Secret History build?

His Way sounds like a database.
One more bow, and then Ling Qi turned to leave, not letting the sigh of relief that wanted to escape out into the world. Leaving the range of the Meng's domain, she was soon greeting guests again, but only for a short time before she took a conspicuously empty seat next to Meizhen.

"You are well?" her friend asked evenly. She didn't turn her head from the stage as the lanterns arrayed around the room began to dim, signalling that the performance was nigh.

"Yes, just some negotiations," Ling Qi said, leaning back in her seat as she mentally prodded Zhengui to wakefulness. "I'll tell you about it later."

Meizhen raised an eyebrow, glancing her way, but made no more of it.
No getting it past Meizhen it seems, its patently obvious that Ling Qi is stressed and frazzled by the negotiations, but not overly so.
The curtain on the stage rose. If Ling Qi wasn't intimately familiar with her aura, she might not have recognized Hanyi. Her hair was done up and threaded through pale white flowers, and somehow, between the lightning and the cosmetics, her deathly pallor looked ethereal instead. As the curtains rose, Hanyi stepped forward, her hands clasped together, and began to sing.

Ling Qi breathed out, and let the melody wash over her and carry her away.
Hmm, something faintly luminous should do it, if you had UV lighting.
I suppose its not like radium powder would bother anyone around there....
A soft wind blew, cold and brisk. The flakes began to fall, dancing like airy crystals under the pale silver light of the moon. The cold wind blew from the mountain high, where lives cold eternal and with it descended the maiden. Daughter of ice, maiden of winter. With a train of purest white, and lilting song descended the maiden to the valley below, and with her came the snow.

Peace, Peace, whispered the wind.

And the snow did fall.
So the story is a carefully paraphrased and artistic version of Hanyi going "this valley is so noisy I wish they'd shut up.".

:3
Branches bare of leaves swayed in the soft wind, cold wind, and withered grasp whispered along to the maidens song as the flakes fell, to paint the world in white. Across the valley brook danced the maiden, with long hair of black, woven with crystal flowers. In her steps trailed calm, burbling waters falling silent under the spread of ice. In the forest around did the tall and tired trees bow at her passing, branches heavy with snow. They passed into slumber well earned through the year, and the creaking of wood joined the song of the wind and snow.

Under falling snow the detritus of fall hid away, painted smooth by drifting white. Under maidens feet did signs of toil vanish, leaving only a land pristine and stark. Under the light of the moon, the maiden sang the silence of winter sleep. O beautiful maiden, most lovely of all; gone was the wilting decline of autumn, and distant were the chaos of spring and the toil of summer!
Winter as rest probably is a perspective hard to find amongst humans, where part of the perils of Winter is that everything ELSE has gone to sleep but humanity remains awake and active, but none of the natural resources they'd normally draw upon are.

Drawing a blanket of snow across the earth, wood and water, such that they'd rest because they would not stop moving otherwise.
O winter, time of preservation and tales, when all the world quiets. O winter, when the people gather and share the spoils of a year hard won.

O winter, time of remembrance, when past becomes present in the mind, and memories of days gone by warm the soul. O winter, the time of cherishing, to hold tight what you have in the face of the cold.

O winter, who lives eternal upon the high mountaintop, forever and ever.
And this calls to Zeqing for Hanyi, but most people could remember what they once had, but no longer do. Winter a time for family, because all else is cold and silent.
Outside danced the maiden, her train was the wind, and her laugh the rattle of window frames and the groan of roofs heavy with snow. Outside was the maiden, who would never return home. Daughter of ice eternal, the drifting snow and the whispering wind, who belonged now to the valley below.
And the meat of it for her. A bit more oomph in this bit than the earlier portion.
Though I wonder, if the bit of winter would not leave, then would she sleep in the coldhouse?

A little bit of domesticated winter in summer.
Ling Qi breathed deep as the song went on, the image's of deepening winter dancing in her minds eye. Hanyi had been a little dishonest, to say that the maiden was not her. That was fine though, Ling Qi thought. It had taken a great deal of prodding from Sixiang to really tease things out.
Think she just doesn't like showing weakness personally.
"I guess I just think I've been trying too hard to be different from Momma," Hanyi had said dejectedly. "I want to do new things, and live like she said, but I still want to be her daughter, you know."

"I don't think there's anything wrong with that," Ling Qi had said. "It can be hard to find the right balance, between who you were, and who you want to be."

"Especially when most of us can't even easily really say what we want to be," Sixiang had mused, their voice a chime among the hanging ice.

Hanyi had nodded, scuffing her foot in the dirt. "...I'm not like Momma, but I'm still the winter. I don't think I can be anything else, not really. I don't really wanna be."

"And there's nothing wrong with that," Ling Qi had said, resting her hand on her shoulder. "So, let's figure out how to work that feeling in, okay?"
Spirit nature again. They must remain true to their nature, but to grow beyond their current spot, they'd need to be different. Different in detail but same in nature.
Ling Qi closed her eyes as the song reached its finish, a clash with the oncoming spring, a doomed battle that the maiden could not win, with the spring came the melt, and the rain, deluge and chaos.

But winter would be back, and peace with it, if they only endured.
And that, I think came from the recent battles.
Seems she's feeling it a little bit more than she pretends to. Just enough to have a sense for what is a doomed battle, that all she could do is endure, survive and rise up once more.

Its a little unusual for a spirit normally of cold, winter and endings, the flavors of endurance and regeneration.
Drawing a bit from Zhengui eh?
Polite applause rang out through the hall. Ling Qi gazed around her, and saw that the guests seemed all in good humor. Most did not seem particularly excited or touched really, but here and there were a few.Beside her, Meizhen offered quiet applause with a thoughtful look, and somewhere behind them, she heard Wang Chao giving loud approval.
Those few would be pretty highly prized for a debut song.
Hmm...probably those who have known true loss in some way would feel it better.

Also Wang Chao seems to be vaguely missing the point of the song being "its nice and quiet in winter" :p
Peering out of the corner of her eye, she saw Meng Diu, her expression indecipherable. Yet, as she watched, she saw the older woman shake out her sleeves, revealing dainty hands as powder white as her face. She clapped three times.
A very deliberate action, in a way which draws attention quite well.
Hmmm, can't read through her higher cultivation, but I like to think that given the Meng origins, giving unearned praise to music would be looked upon poorly.

Though the deal didn't hurt.
On the stage Hanyi beamed as she lowered her upraised hands, and bowed to the audience as the curtain fell.

In the time after the show, Ling Qi got around to mingling with the rest of her guests. Hanyi stayed at her side the whole time, and was unfailingly well behaved. Sweet almost. It actually took Ling Qi a bit of effort not to laugh at what an inaccurate picture these young men and women were getting of her spirit, but she wasn't going to ruin Hanyi's fun
Its her public facing facade!
Lots of celebrity types are hard to get along with in private where they let their masks down!

Eventually, things wound down, and guests got on their way, leaving Ling Qi with her spirits, and bao Qian backstage. Hanyi sat balanced on Zhengui's back, who had shrunk himself down to the size of a big dog to avoid doing any damage, and Bao Qian stood before them, counting out the nights proceeds.

"And this is you're share, young Miss," he said, Bao theatrically as he placed a small pouch in Hanyi's hands. "A wonderful first performance certainly. I hope you are ready to compose more songs in the future."

"Uh huh!" Hanyi said excitedly, tugging the drawstrings of the pouch open, inside were many glittering yellow stones and a single green one, shining like an emerald.

Hanyi gains 1 green stone, 75 Yellow Stones

"That's surprising, for just entrance fees. How does this place stay open, charging in green stones?" Ling Qi asked curiously. It didn't seem like the clientele was that wealthy.

"They do not," Bao Qian admitted. He cast her a searching look. "However, Lady meng approached me to commission the first recording. That includes Miss Hanyi's part of the initial fee."

"Oh! Somebody is wanted to buy my song already! Isn't that great Big Sis?" Hanyi said happily, picking through and counting her stones.

"Mmhm, Hanyi is good!" Gui agreed cheerfully.

Bao Qian gave her a look, and Ling Qi just smiled. "I'm glad, you'll definitely be really popular," Ling Qi said, reaching down to muss Hanyi's carefully arranged hair. "Did anyone else see Lady Meng buy?" She asked bao Qian.

"They did, though I am certain no one immediately recognized her. She was quite restrained," Bao Qian said shrewdly. "I shouldn't be surprised if word gets around however. I may have to prepare more materials."
Oh yeah...thats big money there. She's made it, in some small way, fashionable, and now the copycats will copy.

So, I've been thinking after that Dust of Age's informational about the Dream Realm and how our ability to navigate through it could be pretty awesome as we grow stronger and develop further political connections. It's clear that the Dream Realm allows for travel that ignores traditional obstacles, like seas and mountains and distance, given that the Sect Head of the Dust of Ages Sect has, apparently, seen every corner of the world.

With us, however, such travel would be really neat in continuing diplomatic missions to the Ice Nation to the South as well as quickly moving between polities, carrying messages, or engaging in some quick diplomacy. It's going to be interesting to see how we utilize our growing control and ability to manipulate the Dream World to engage in our job as well as to seek out different opportunities to grow even stronger and form better connections.

I would find it amusing, however, if we one day got good enough to give Xiulan a surprise visit, far before we were expecting to actually see each other. Just popping over to the Phoneix Nest for a quick chat before popping back to the Emerald Seas.

Cultural Differences
Cultural Differences

'Well,' Ling Qi thought, watching the debacle unfolding in front of her with a sort of horrified fascination, 'I suppose this is one of those cultural differences Renxiang warned me of.'

Across from her sat Wang Chao laughing at one of his own jests, beaming down at the pair of dice tossed by his opponent. He seemed unaware of the danger he was putting himself in.

'My, who could have guessed the unflappable Bai Meizhen would lose her cool over such a small matter.' Guffawed Sixiang, a deeply masculine rumble that juxtaposed oddly with the slim, androgynous form they had chosen for the day.

To the outside observer Meizhen hardly looked irritated, in fact, she sat so still and poised she may well have been a statue. A statue carved from solid marble with eyes of furious amber.

Ling Qi knew better. For the moment her best friend was a snake before a mouse, perfectly still, readying herself for the single moment of action where deadly fangs would strike and flesh would be pierced.

For the moment, Ling Qi turned her carefully impassive gaze down towards the chilled sweet-tea she cradled, politely, and pointedly, ignoring the happenings only a few paces in front of her. In the ripples of opaque liquid she saw the indistinct features of Sixinag reflected back at her.

'I should really put a stop to this. I doubt Renxiang will be impressed with me if what was supposed to be a leisurely afternoon ended with the death of a Count scion.'

'Probably half as horrified as she would be to learn you dared call the concoction you are drinking tea.'

'Be serious for a moment Sixiang, if Cui was here, we'd already have an incident.'

'Relax silly girl, until your friend learns an Art to kill with her gaze, the walking case of foot-in-mouth syndrome will be fine.'

Ling Qi let a long moment of silence linger. '...This is Meizhen we are talking about, do you want to gamble that she doesn't have an art that can kill with a look?"

'...Point taken.'

So, with great trepidation, Ling Qi mustered all of the diplomacy and poise attained while working for her liege—she was going to need it.

"Ahem." She cleared her throat, interrupting Wang Chao before he could dig the hole he was in any deeper. Turning towards her deadly still friend, she implored composure with a look.

"Perhaps," She drawled carefully, conscious of the way the word lingered on her tongue, "we should move onto a new form of entertainment, Sic Bo seems to be getting stale."

Wang Chao laughed. "Ha! Right as I am about to seize victory! It seems Lady Qi wishes to help her friend avoid defeat."

Bai Heizhen's jaw clenched, and she somehow became even stiller, hardly seeming to beath at all. "I fail to see how I have lost. I rolled the best possible result, after all."

Ling Qi looked down at the dice, laying innocently on the pavilion table, and sighed.

The moment stretched out, one second, two. Eventually, a mental nudge from Sixiang incited her to deliver the ill news.

"Meizhen, I don't think rolling snake eyes is a good thing in The Emerald Seas."

xxxXXXxxx

Here it is, 500 words of set up for a shitty joke, lol. Oh, and I have no idea what Sic Bo is, besides the fact it is an ancient Chinese dice game. Historical buffs, forgive me for this.

Seems like a pretty interesting direction to eventually head towards, though it's probably worth noting that traveling through Golden Fields in the dream realm is probably incredibly deadly.
Giving that a shot before Indigo doesn't seem like it'd end well.

You sound like you mean that CRX is somehow unique in that regard and most other things can't do that, if taken to extreme.
She isn't the only one with the motive, but she's the one with the most means and opportunity of her generation in the sect, as far as I can tell.
And regarding that, Ling Qi's "role", if she has one, seems more one of making sure CRX gets enough spirit hugs so that she doesn't.
That's a good way to put it.

This is blessed XD

Ling Qi is definitely in the Neutral-Chaotic/Neutral-Good quadrant. The problem is that places her anywhere between True Neutral, Neutral Good, Chaotic Good and Chaotic Neutral, depending on where you draw the line of where exactly Neutral switches into non-Neutral.
(I absolutely think of DnD alignment as a coordinate system, not nine boxes standing side to side)

True Neutral has the advantage of pointing out her, as someone said, "scared animal"-like nature, where she just kind of huddles for warmth without deep philosophical justifications for whatever she does.

Chaotic Neutral has the advantage of outlining her Grinning Moon origins and her overall position as a quest protagonist and therefore led by a bunch of squabbling readers.

Chaotic Good serves to contrast her with Renxiang well, where they are both idealistic, but Renxiang is more principled and system-oriented where Ling Qi is more individual-focused and open to change.

Neutral Good sums up her recent attitude well, where she obeys the system without particularly buying into it and cares deeply about others even as she tells herself that she doesn't care as deeply as other people do.

I think of these Chaotic Neutral is my least favorite, but the rest are all equally attractive...

That's really just reading way to much into a system that was designed for quick Friend/Foe designations. Especially as there are systems that actually manage to encode perspective into morality. MTG's color wheel for instance, can actually work as barebones personality assessment because as it's been developed, certain themes have been encoded into each color, and it's possible to throw away all of the game's baggage, and use the wheel as a lens for estimating how to interact with people.

Under that paradigm, Ling Qi is actually realy easy to pick out, she's Jund (the Green, Red, Black three color identity); she started as Red, the color of freedom and expression, picked up Black, the color of ambition and self-reliance when she slotted in the "never slow down" insight (well, cultivating Darkness and it's "desire" influence didn't help any), and she's been slowly integrating green, the color of community, tradition, and connection to nature as she's reconnected with her family, leaned hard into spirit association, and became a diplomat.
