[X] Catch the Elder's attention, and speak of the strange encounter.

Mainly because I believe that Ling Qi not even giving the sect a chance before deciding she has better chances with Shenhua is not something I want to foster long term.

[X] Remain silent, wait until your debrief with the Duchess to discuss the matter

I think this operation has very clearly demonstrated that when it comes to nonviolent methods of dealing with "barbarians", these Elders' judgement is compromised. They wanted to attack the White Sky representatives for god's sake. At a diplomatic summit. After the White Sky just got done talking about how this wasn't their fight and they want to stay out of it. Anyone sane would've either called off the attack, or given a clear signal that the representatives were to be considered non-combatants and actively protected from becoming collateral damage.

Then Ling Qi potentially saves their bacon by convincing the White Sky to go away, and they're like "Great job, let's run them down while their backs are turned!"

I really don't want to risk them screwing this up and provoking a totally preventable war with what sounds like a pretty damn powerful foreign polity.

There's the old saying about a time and place for everything... neither of which apply in this situation for the Elders

The only argument in favor of showing it to the sect I can think of is that if the Duchess has a sharply negative reaction, it has potential to be far worse than the Sect's worst negative reaction (which will probably just be taking the thing away from Ling Qi and scolding her for taking candy from strangers). But the Duchess might have a sharply negative reaction to Ling Qi NOT holding the thing out to show to her, if she's inclined to be irrational on the matter, so... yeah.

This is just a flat out better option, imho.

I find it funny if we relate the Elders to the guests part of the Argent Insight for diplomancing the Ice lady they'd be found lacking, it's like being judged by something of your own making and it being disappointed :V

Another thing to consider is that it isn't just Jiao who is incapacitated. Back when we first got the sliver my best thought was that we should tell CRX as soon as the mission ended, and then if she thought it was worth a try follow up with bringing Liao Zhu in to help us plan out a proposal before going to an Elder. As the #1 inner disciple his support would have at least gotten them to hear us out even in the worst case scenario, but now he's in a coma.

The Cai option just seems less likely for us to get dismissed out of hand, the sliver confiscated, or punished for being insufficiently aggressive toward the enemy or some bullshit. It's only flaw is that we should explicitly be giving CRX the basics on the way to the communication room so we can get some last minute advice.

The problem is that even our relatively moderate commanding officer's impulse was "Well that's not how I'd have handled it but it was a good play, we'll have to capture them on the way out."

Like, the very idea of "Maybe we don't need to fight them" didn't occur to him.

Which is the biggest indictment from a meta point of view of this particular group of the Sect at this particular period of time.

Especially when most of the people who'd vouch for us who are in the Sect are incapacitated or unavailable right now.

Well... the whole imperial doctrine is based on isolationism and xenophobia. Does anyone expect Ling Qi to ... suddenly invert that stance?

It's not like they don't know about the ice lady if Buddha sensed them and the shard in our possession, it's more.. passing the ball to Shenhua after all it's not just a Sect matter anymore.

No, but I expect the Empire to suffer a collapse over the course of the story, and I expect Ling Qi to have a lot more opportunity and influence in the fragments we end up associated with.
Oof. Really, a collapse? I mean, sure there are certainly many, many, many fires flaring up, but it seems hardier than that. ... I hope at least.

Yeah.

Though if she follows up on this and does send us on a 'diplomatic' mission I expect that to be one hell of a gamble. Or test, considering Shenhua's past behavior. If we succeed in driving a wedge between the tribes, good. If not, well, we're still rather expendable. That's at least my expectation ...

Everything is a test with Shenhua. Which means we can always fail, but also that we always get enough help that we should have a chance of succeeding. It's not amazing but its better than the nothing the Sect is likely to give us, since they wouldn't even bother taking the chance.

But we get to speak with Ice Ladies then :V

Or, as a wise person once said:

YrsillarYesterday at 3:05 PM
being founded by people whose defining similarity is fighting a largely losing war against people who burned and shattered their homes and loved ones has its effects

Ogodei is the reason there are so many high level cultivators at Argent Peak. It's also the reason why so many of the high level cultivators are set in their Ways regarding the Cloud Tribes.

We expect Shenhua to ignore that stance and do whatever she believes will benefit her, because that's the sort of thing Shenhua does.
Shenhua is known for having made a war against her ducal house because they didn't have a hardcore enough stance against the barbarians, and promptly managed to get all the anti-barbarians factions behind her.

Her formative moment was when her father and brother sacrificed themselves to give words of an upcoming barbarian invasion, and the response from the Hui wasn't extreme enough.
