First Watcher

Twenty Sixth Day of the First Month 294 AC

There had never been a dog quite like this one on the streets of Manatarys, and this was the city that had endured the glare of the Doom across the Sea of Sighs, survived a reign of demons and prospered under a reign of angels. No one had ever seen a dog quite like the one the dark haired girl walked down the Street of Remembrance. Its fur was golden and glossy, its ears large and floppy and its face faintly wolf-like without making one think wolf, though one might perhaps be forgiven for missing all this seeing as the creature had scores of bright silver eyes dotted all over its body. No matter if one looked at the creature head on or out of the corner of one's eye it always always looked back.

Vee knew walking Glint would draw quite a bit of attention. She didn't really like attention, but she had grown to tolerate it. Glint loved it though, and he was a good boy who deserved a treat for going through all the boring checkups. Dogs were straightforward like that, if they liked you they would walk through fire for you and if they didn't like you, well, in Vee's experience it meant you had messed something up, or some other human had and the poor dog couldn't tell the difference.

A small young voice called up from up ahead. "Ooh... mommy, mommy, look, a Xor dog, a Xo'dog!" in her haste the little girl, she could not be older than three, mashed the two words together as she threw herself at Glint. Wherever her mother was, she was not waiting for an answer.

"Careful with the pup," Vee growled at Glint. Dogs knew that much, of course, but they could still be startled like most folk, and it wasn't exactly normal for a dog to have eye magic.

After poking at the hound's fur for a while, the little turned to Vee in a whirlwind of black hair and flashing brown eyes. "He is a Xor dog, ain't he? Like this, see?" It was only then that Vee realized the toy in the girl's left hand was a stuffed Xor doll, eye-stalks and all, with bits of polished wood for eyes.

There were a lot of answers one could give to that question. There was the wizardly sort of answer mages from Naath to Volantis to Mantarys' own Scholarum would give, amd there was the 'be careful around strange dogs' most people would give, but Vee wasn't a scholar and she wasn't most people either. Crouching down to look the girl in the eye, she said, "Yeah he is. We just made him to see if the magic took."

"That's silly," the girl giggles, still holding on firmly to Glint's fur with her right hand, a little too firmly judging from his resigned look. "You need a mommy dog and a daddy dog and..."

"Gently now, you are holding a little too tight," Vee admonished.

"Uh... sorry Xor dog," the girl said sheepishly letting go of the dog's coat.

"See, you have to pet him right here, just between the eyes and around...." Vee showed her.

That was how the girl's mother found her a few minutes later, not entirely sure how to take what she was seeing. Vee would have told her to take things as they were, but people rarely had the good sense to listen.

OOC: The word little without a noun up there is not a typo, it's Vee mentally falling back into the linguistics patterns of her birth for a moment where 'little' meant any toddler. Not yet edited.
Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

I loved this interlude! Glint is a Xor Dog! And she has a Xor plushy! 🤯

You've made it, buddy. You're a Beanie Baby now.

It should be 26/25, dp.

To be fair just because Vee thinks he's cute and the little girl thinks he is cue that not mean, does not mean there aren't people slowly stepping away and clutching religious symbols. Silly people of course. :V
Its heartwarming. My sister loves the creepily styled toys so that hit me right in the "reminds me of someone I know" button.

@Goldfish, @Deliste, @BronzeTongue, now that we have this templet, we are in dire need of restructuring the way a fuckload of creatures is assigned to guarding various places and people of importance.

Here's the post with everyone's assignment.

Question stands:
1) do we just slap this template at creatures that are already there?
(how would that work in terms of price, @DragonParadox? Just taking out the base creature's price out of what it'd have with the Watchman-creature template?);
2) or we make a huge new batch of creatures specifically for watching over people?

We can manage either way, first is harder on me for redacting all of the stuff, second's harder on y'all for coming up with new variants of creatures for all biomes.

We should not apply this template to pre-existing creatures. That would be an extreme modification, IMO. I think we should just come up with a solid Watchmen templated servitor next month and grow a bunch of them. Each guard group can get one or more of them to augment their forces.

I'll try my hand at environment appropriate Watchmen servitors, with y'alls assistance. Later, though. Mentally exhausted right now. It's been a long busy day.

We may want to look into what creatures are best for these templates as well. We could use some type of fast and powerful creature.

Rather than apply it to animals or whatever, I would much like to apply it to bio-constructs, and just give every person who needs a body guard a hyper-specialized and elite one. A spotter who is vulnerable, either in the sense of Saves, or lack of ability to defend themselves from attack, isn't very useful to efforts to protect their charge, and it just seems more effective to make it a package deal. That's why Erinyes are so good, they're effective fighters and also able to see through disguises.

Keep in mind, we'll need about a (half a) thousand of such creatures to cover everywhere that has important structures/people.

Even we won't be able to freely afford this many CR15 creatures.
So at the very least we need a CR15 elite variant, and... cr 7-10 base variant, methinks.

@Goldfish, for the latter, I think we should really focus on elusiveness and "can't be blocked with Planar anchor or the like"-movement.
It is their job to find nasty shit and report it to everyone else (see the list of pretty buff guys we have guarding everywhere now) not to fight it themselves.

I was thinking about something like that, a Bio-Construct that has also been given Telepathy. That would allow it to have the Mindsight feat for added sensory power, plus it could silently communicate with its fellow guards and whoever is being protected while serving as a telepathic relay between them all.

Yeah, I agree. It doesn't need to be beefy or a heavy combatant. Preferably, it will be a Small-sized or smaller Bio-Construct or Plant Creature (for the sweet immunities) with good mobility. If we can keep its CR low enough, we can produce a bunch of them for free if we tap out corpse stockpile.
