Interlude DCCXXI: The Devil You Know
The Devil You Know

Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

Drakefort, Painted Mountains, Eastern Approaches

Jon Redfort shook the small jar, glaring at the small demonic figure within. Red skinned and sharp-toothed, its tiny fists smashing against the hardened jar in pure rage. The thing was the very picture of the demons that one might find along the margins of certain pages of an illustrated copy of the Seven-Pointed Star. Only this was not a demon, but rather a devil, an imp to be exact, and it had committed crimes out of all proportion to its small stature and, according to his Scholarum adviser, its lowly position in the hierarchies of of Hell. The thing had tainted countless healers' supplies and it had been clever about it. The patients had seemed to recover every time, only to take ill even worse a few days later, sowing fear and mistrust. Thank the gods he had not offered healing to any of the local tribes yet. That would have set afire the very feud he was struggling to stomp down on.

A task for someone else to handle for once, the knight thought, taking the jar with him into the his solar, which the harsh light of midday made worthy of the name. The letter he had received by raven was very specific about when and precisely where the investigator from Sorcerer's Deep would arrive, a precision he had learned to associate with magic, though he did not know precisely who would be taking over. Someone from the Inquisition probably, surely not a Companion, their time was too precious to be handling petty fiends, even ones as skillful in their malice as this one had been.

At precisely noon the shadows of the courtyard shifted and from them rose a black-armored figure, an unmistakably female figure. Unlike the likes of Balon Swann, Jon was not really one to pine for a woman who preferred the sparring ring or the archery range to more ladylike pursuits, but that did not mean he was blind.

Waves of ebony hair framed a pale elegant face and eyes black as midnight... currently glaring at his prisoner in contempt. "An imp... lovely," she said under her breath, though the knight had the strangest feeling the words had been meant for him to hear just as much as the greeting that followed, wherein she introduced herself as Lineah.

"Foolish mortal," the imp screeched. "Your master deals with Hell. She will devour your manhood roasted upon a spit..."

"As crass as always," the women sighed, only when Jon looked at her again a pair great wings like blood-specked ash had grown from her shoulders. "The King does not deal with Baator, though there are some within its mechanisms fortunate enough to be able to pledge their service to him, in place of less... honorable lords."

Jon was not exactly sure what the courtesies were to answer to that, but he was rather achingly aware that courtesies would be required. Judging from the way his heart was pounding he had a sinking feeling that would he open his mouth without thinking it through, some compliment of her face or form would slip through. You would think the admission she was a devil would make her seem less attractive not more, but then if that were the case there would be fewer sinners in the world.

"My Lord, I would he happy to explain how I and my sisters came to serve the King and why. A lord of your importance should certainly not be kept in the dark, least of all about what goes on in your own keep," Lineah continued matter-of-factly. "I think it is best, however, to deal with the cause of your recent misfortunes first. Imps make for atrocious company at the best of times..."

Starting like a squire woken from a daydream, Jon quickly handed the still protesting prisoner over. That was bound to be an interesting conversation, if nothing else. The knight struggled very hard not to think of what else might come of this.

OOC: The reason the erinyes is not more annoyed by Ser Jon's obvious gawking is that she gets to torture an imp to find out where it came from and how. This update is about more than the possibility of lords throughout the realm trying to gain the affections of the Sisters of Vengeance though, it's a bit of a glimpse into those minor fiend troubles that are normally abstracted away that we talked about recently.

Not at all, but potentially our profit.

There is very little damage or risk in informing her.
Almost none I'd say.
There's getting embroiled in local politics which is not what we're here for. I highly doubt Pol Ning will be peachy with her brother's reign being threatened after the Golden Company is dealt with, and inviting her to take sanctuary blows our cover wide open on that front.

I don't see much benefit in getting involved instead of focusing on the Golden Company like we should be doing.

I think there's a missunderstanding.

Taking us up on the offer to come to SD, means she won't be working for her brother here anymore.
We are offering her to loot her for her own security, in the unlikely case she prefers that to staying here and fighting out her political battles to the end.

That's a rather insulting offer. The Yi Tish value family above everything. Her abandoning her brother would be wildly OOC considering how much she's been working to try to help him. They certainly don't hate each other.

It's a reasonable offer.
Right now her brother wants her imprisoned or dead and she would have to play against a much stronger mage's influence at his court to convince him otherwise.

That doesn't make it any less insulting. You're going against millennia of cultural values of family before everything. The first thing she'd ask is why we aren't offering to help her clear her name, especially since she'd put two and two together and figure out we were the ones who dealt with the Golden Company mages.

Think you meant Jon here, since you seem to associate the two as closely working together... which makes sense, they are more familiar to each other than the locals.

I'm not particularly invested in looting Ning right now, so I don't mind leaving her to fend for herself, but there was more to my vote than talking to her.

How about a compromise?

[X] Continue with the interrogation
-[X] Tyene will use a Sending Stone to warn Pol Ning that she is still in danger and that her brother's Court has been infiltrated.
-[X] Begin recalling the forces we expect to be involved in the strike against the Golden Company.

I can support this. Pol Ning happens to be more than a bit of a liability if recruited right at this second, so I'd rather not approach her.

[X] Goldfish

@Goldfish, your latest edit isn't fine. She won't recognize Daenerys' voice. Viserys should do it, or Daenerys should use that spell that lets you pretend to be someone else with Sending.

EDIT : But you should still vote for my plan, it's the best. :p

[X] Continue with the interrogation
-[X] Send Dany, Richard, and Tyene to meet with Pol Ning and tell her what we have learned of the plots against her so far. Before telling her anything, Dany casts an Extended Mind Blank on Ning. Give her the choice of attempting to weather the coming storm on her own or taking sanctuary with us until it blows over.
-[X] Begin recalling the forces we expect to be involved in the strike against the Golden Company.

I prefer the older version.

Am gonna sleep through this update and much the following discussion.

Keep in mind @everyone, that we have 3 broad destinations/targets to hit regardless of the Mindblanked GCs:

1) The spy-ring in Azure Emperor's territory.
2) The Shadow Fortress, in which we thankfully now have a back entrance keyed by Anu and Mel last month.
3) The main camp of GC.

The first has PR and actual master-spies we can't let get away.

The second has Shadow Dragons, Abishai, probably more clerics and cultists, ?????, and is the main installation Timmie has right now, period.

The third has lots of inconsequential chaff, some mid-tier asses we don't really want to get away (non-mindblanked), some high-tier pawns we really don't want getting away (8 mindblanked targets), and a chance at grabbing F!Aegon.
--------------------------------
Grabbing an Avatar of Tiamat or F!Aegon and WoS'ing the shit out of them is a priority.
--------------------------------
Activating the Worm takes time.
We'd have to have someone run the ritual a fair bit beforehand the combat (rounds-wise) if we want to use it.
--------------------------------
We can also provoke Timmie into "no brain all rage" by showing off the Red Dragon Orb on us.
And even more so by having the Worm on the battlefield.
Will get us an almost-guaranteed Avatar if we show having it on us.

Will also get us a whole heap of trouble as she is likely to throw everything she can out way to try and get it.

I'm going to have some kinda difficult school-practice-related days ahead, may participate even less then the last few... well, weeks really.

Part MMMCCCXXVII: Shadows Upon a Dream
Shadows Upon a Dream

Thirteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 293 AC

The decision is not difficult to come to in the end. You cannot afford to show your hand, not yet. If Trader Town should fall into chaos in the interim... well that will be proof enough that it had not been a very stable edifice to begin with. You are not in the business of propping up the whole world after all.

"At least not until you rule it all," Varys says half in jest.

You cannot deny the notion is appealing and not as absurd as it would have been two or three years ago. "Still absurd enough though," you send to your familiar.

Dismissing the line of thought as you turn to Tyene. "Send word to Pol Ning that she might still be in danger and that her brother's court may have been infiltrated."

"She would probably be able to guess as much herself if he is cautious," your friend points out with a small smile. "Feeling the urge to overturn another ruler are you? We haven't done it in a while."

"I would rather deal with Aegon first," you say in turn, though your smile fades soon after as you return to the book with crimson covers, to the mind of the mage who had dared to keep company with Tiamat's priests. He had dared far more, the staff was proof of that. Part of you wants to riffle through the pages to find all his secrets great and small, but you do not have days and weeks for such an investigation, only hours.

Thus you discover that Raerys had never traveled to the Shadow Fortress himself for he did not desire to risk his person in the abode of priests, demons and the wandering dead, but he can name other things, safe houses, his own and those of a number of his fellows. The diviners' had been particularly easy to discover. 'Too busy watching for others to hide for themselves,' the sardonic thought read. His brother has knowledge of dragons, not perfect but better than you had before. The news is at once troubling and you will admit a touch exhilarating.

A pair of ancient nightmare dragons guard Aegon's dreams, perhaps expecting Dany to attempt to contact him thus. A shadow dragon well into her fourth century had been spotted conversing with one of the priests and she might not be the only one of her brood you must face to take the shadow fortress, though you suspect if you take the hidden path Malisandre and Anu had plotted they will not notice you at first, allowing you to defeat the guardians once the fortress had already been gutted.

"Why haven't they used the dragons more, I wonder?" Dany muses and little wonder. Trader Town is not helpless, even riven by internal divisions, but you cannot imagine them being able to hold off three mature dragons in addition to almost two dozen drakes and all the mages the company can muster.

"Our enemies are not so trusting among each other that these books can offer a definitive answer, but Raerys suspects it is a matter of not wishing to share the fruits of victory with them. Dragons are more easily set to guard something, particularly if one makes room for their hoards among it, than persuaded to conquer for any but themselves."

OOC: Just to be clear, the two nightmare dragons are both ancient, the shadow dragon is a mature adult.

Do we know where the mind blank effects come from?

I don't want to let anyone with an actual item survive. The others will eventually be revealed.
