[X] Return

We came because reinforcements were needed to fend off the invasion. We've done our job here, time to head back.

Investigating is tempting, but our plan was to resolve the urgent situation here and then go back. Plus, if we spend time fighting an assassin here,we will waste too much time and energies fighting, and that means we will be unabke to defend our village afterwards.

Also, Ling Qi is currently anxious and it is gnawing at her. It will keep growing worse the longer she delays going back to Zhengui and Xiulan. In the frame of mind she is in, she won't do a good job investigating, and a failure to fibd anything will only worsen her mood later on.

Considering her mood and her qi going out of control are starting to have effects on her environement, and these effects are no longer entirely cosmetic (The ground is frosting around our feet as we walk, the wind is projecting hostility through songs around us), we might damage the crime scene if we linger, or accidentally harm someone. Let's not linger in village 3.

Plus, our Way does put family first. We can afford to indulge on that and protect Zhengui and Xiulan from a potential mystery assasin and/or the music playing bard from earlier.

It was hinted that there were agitated spirits already in that direction, and our village was the one between the big mountain and the rest of the valley.

Big explosion like that and the sense of Fourth Realms fighting? You're damn right everything that isn't in the upper echelons of Green and is ambulatory is going to be running the fuck away--and we're the most logical direction for it, especially since they're already agitated.
Yeah, there wasn't a major problem before - just a "things might be getting stirred up so be prepared". Now though? There will be definitely be trouble.

Zhengui and Xiulan should be able to deal with groundbound spirits much better than barbarians I feel, but they could need help. Also, we shouldn't forget that the other villages don't really want to deal with any more shit at this stage, so us being there to interdict spirits running past our village could also be helpful.

Also, I really liked how this additional plot element ties in the threat of the Barbarians with what we've experienced in the Corrupted Caverns. And it gives us a reason to go back with Li Suyin and others! Trying to figure out the connection between what exists down there with the Cloud Barbarians could be a really cool arc, and I think we've gotten the hook which makes it all the more likely.
Well, I think we were given hints that shaman dude back in Investigations got his super secret stealth talisman from the Gnawing Ones?

We did, but there hasn't been much development in that line, and it was quite possible that it was one tribe doing reckless things.

But now we seem to have some influence by the Gnawing ones on an attack of this scale, which points towards more interaction between the Gnawing ones and the Cloud Barbarians than a simple rouge shaman or tribe.

I think it's been firmly established LQ isn't a saint, or is she out to become one. Friends and family come first.

Also, it's interesting how we've constructed her character to be nearly bereft of typical Shounen/Xianxia protagonist attributes. She is the shadow to CRX's sun. She detests chaos and fights for the status quo. She is focused on the mission given by her superiors, and will prudently ignore calls to adventure when there are more immediate and pressing matters.

[X] Return

Mmm, I'd note that Deng hasn't started moving yet. This is despite the fact that we broke the barbarian attack very visibly, and have had time to contact the troops, investigate the assassination, and scry for him. This suggests that he might not move without prompting. Additionally, "Rescue" should be able to be done fairly quickly, and doing it before returning shouldn't really cause any problems I don't think? Spending 5 minutes to get things tidied up here doesn't seem like a bad idea.

5 minutes is the difference between the beast tide hitting when we have our buffs fully online and getting there in the nick of time

@yrsillar, how far away is the mountain from our valley? My impression is that it's quite a bit further than the distance between our villages, given how far we had to travel from the district main base to get here...

[X] Return

If our village falls that compromises the defensive line, doing so would be a direct dereliction of our duty and place everyone else in danger. It would also cost almost half of our friends, which would suck given how much ap we've put into cultivating them and how enjoyable they are to read about.

[X] Rescue

The time span changes my mind here.

I'm thinking we have time.

If the beast tide ends up being terrible, I can't imagine how shitty it would be to be that wounded scout in the woods alone, unable to even stand.

Even propped up against a wall, his group buffs should work on the defenders of Village 3 though.

Searching a circle of 5 kilometer radius in the dark is not a trivial expenditure of time. Dude isn't in immediate danger. Send one of the lower soldiers to see if any of the villagers recognize the description of the tree and bring the officer back to base. We want to have as much time at the southern village as possible to prepare a killing ground for any nasties that come our way.
