That said I would like to hit the Deep Ones hard within the next few months
I give it 1st to 2nd month of next year, really.
If we are lucky enough to wrap up Timmie in one month...

So, we are getting 9.000 bodies to throw at illithids.

Nothing special (illithids have hundreds of thousand of chaff, easily), but decent core for us to start building from.
We definitely need the Marid houses support on this, and lots of plantforged sea-creatures.

Maybe some Brines, too.

[X] Learn more about the political situation of the Plane of Water
-[X] Specifically, look into the ruling trade houses - and see who might be well-disposed to support the war on Illithids, but also learning of the houses' relations and interaction with each-other - preparing the ground for later attempt at getting support against Efreeti as well.
-[X] Same applies to local Brine Dragons - learn if any around have particular dislike for illithids and desire to see them gone. Payment is on case-by-case.
-[X] Also look into how Brine Dragons' feuds work according to laws and traditions. Would us helping in killing the one Relath has an eye for be agaisnt those regulations?
Skipping ahead there, we still need to finish talking to the Half-Dragon mage Relath's talking to.

I assume that the results of Relath asking would be brought up anyway..?

Honestly, I just want to get that "report" on their houses and not steam in unknowingness here.
I'd like to know who would possibly support us, and start planning around that.

We can talk to her a bit later.
We still have a Moonsingers' temple to visit and (maybe) Brines to hunt.

[X] Hire both
-[X] Hire Serega's Shields (6,000 Heavy Turtle Cavalry strong on the charge, but also capable in a melee; Cost 150,000 IM/Month)
-[X] Hire the Lightning Chasers (3,000 Eel-Bonded Spear Skirmishers/Dart Casters; Cost 90,000 IM/Month)
--[X] Initial Total Monthly Cost: 240,000 IM
-[X] Try to lower the monthly cost by providing weapons and armor fabricated to their specifications
-[X] Speak with the Half-Dragon Sorcerer after Relath tells you whatever he was able to discover about her

We're going to do all of this anyway, I'd just like to be at least halfway chronological about this.

Hmph, fine.

As a note if you guys want to just get a report from Relath I can do that. For what it's worth I understand the frustration about the politics not being made clear yet, but I can only write so fast so I need votes to prioritize things.
I'd like to see this through without a report, personally. You took time to flesh out the high level mages so I'd like to finish exploring that properly.

Okay... I wasn't planning on spending a quarter of a million IM a month until go-time, but we're on a tight deadline anyway. I think we can afford four-to-five months of their services, which is about how long we can delay our one-to-two month war.

Trying to think of ways to reduce the cost now.

@Goldfish We are definitely going to want to produce some aquatic support in the Flesh Forge to help them.

I'm thinking we need scouts, big monster killers and low-to-middle tier magical support, so fast-swimming mage-template creatures if possible.

Already written up as part of my plan.
Could we build them housing and offer permanent residences for their soldiers in the aquatic sector of Sorcerer's Deep? @DragonParadox, that kind of thing would be worth a lot IMO.
Same.

If you can get costs down to 200,000 IM/month, we could pay them a half a year's contract out of hand, half up front, half on completion. It's a lot of money, but we could save up to 300,000 IM and keep them on for six months, which is past the timeframe where we'd be fucked if we didn't hit the Deep Ones hard anyway.

Ha-ah.
I assumed that we'll be taking them on directly after we finish up with Tiamat - so 1st or 2nd month of next year...

I mean, it is obviously a bad idea to give them even more time to prepare, yeah?
When we obviously prepare for war in clear sight of theirs?

...aside from Marids (and maybe Brines), are there any other people we can call up for this?
I have a feeling we need every soldier we can get, no matter the source.

...Oh shi, I'm in paranoid-obsessive mode again.
Nooooooooooo

Hm.
Can we discreetly come in contact with the memory-merchant from Hellven without, well, visiting Hellven?

Illithids hate him, so he might get us some hints where to look for more amiable fire-upport.

We've already got our fortress busters, we've got our boots on the ground, we're going to build up their fire-support, anti-tank units and recon.

We're pretty well placed to throw down. Especially since we're recruiting Triton tribes who we can train up into elites using our mercenaries and equip excellently.

Okay, here's what I have come up with to try to reduce the sellsword company fees. Do ya'll see anything wrong with them or have any other suggestions?

I mentioned the cost of the spellcasting services because normally, even those spells which don't have expensive material components are pretty costly to purchase from a sufficiently powerful mage. I calculated the cost based off standard D&D rates converted to IM.

[X] Try to negotiate a lower price in exchange for other benefits. Offer all of the following incentives to each sellsword company, with the understanding that each offer is meant to further reduce the cost of their services.
-[X] We will provide Masterwork quality Fabricated arms and armor to all of their forces, as well as setting aside the services of a dozen of our Mage-Smiths to provide minor enchantments to their equipment. All at cost, of course.
--[X] We can also give actual discounts should either company decide to further reduce their fee.

-[X] In addition to free health care in the form of magical and Alchemical healing to treat normal injuries, disease, and afflictions, we will perform a Raise Dead (a 90 IM service), Reincarnation (a 56 IM service), Resurrection (a 182 IM service), or True Resurrection (a 306 IM service) upon any of their fallen forces, should their remains be brought to us in time, provided they supply the necessary material components. We will also provide free Regeneration (a 182 IM service) spells to those who are injured gravely enough to lose a limb or organ.
-[X] Show both men the Advanced Plant-Imbued Gigantean Manta Rays who accompanied us to Vialisk and explain their nature. Should they provide us with suitable corpses or the necessary reagents, we can craft for them powerful aquatic servitors at cost, though we will not make sentient beings bound to serve them.
--[X] We can also give actual discounts should either company decide to further reduce their fee.

-[X] Sorcerer's Deep is part of a large growing realm in the Plane of Balance. Better yet, it's an island city located in the middle of a profitable trade route between two continental land masses, one we outright control except for Deep One interference. Although we are unlikely to retain the services of either full company for longer than needed to combat the Deep One threat, we would be able to provide much longer term contracts for smaller numbers years into the future if they are willing to be slightly more generous with their terms in the present.
-[X] Sorcerer's Deep also has a growing aquatic district which could easily accommodate a large influx of residents, should either company like to consider establishing a permanent presence in the Imperium, perhaps either as residences, training facilities, or even an office from which to hire their services to others in the future, such as guards for ocean going trading ships or explorers. This would be a land grant, one whose size is related to the discount each company offers for its services. We will also handle the construction necessary to make the new properties livable and productive, based on their specifications.
-[X] Should either company decide to base themselves in the Imperium on a long term basis, for the next decade we will provide them with free Gate-based travel back and forth between the Imperium and the Plane of Water (a 306 IM service), provided they are able to schedule the transit two weeks prior to the departure date.
-[X] Finally, for a flat 20% reduction in their final fee, we are willing to employ them for a guaranteed six month contract, paying half of their total fee for that time up front and the remaining half upon completion of their service.

[X] Hire both
-[X] Serega's Shields (6,000 Heavy Turtle Cavalry strong on the charge, but also capable in a melee; Cost 150,000 IM/Month)
-[X] Lightning Chasers (3,000 Eel-Bonded Spear Skirmishers/Dart Casters; Cost 90,000 IM/Month)
--[X] Total Monthly Cost Before Discount: 240,000 IM

I don't think you are being reasonable about the supposed Illithids numbers.

They have at least 3 major fortresses, and 2 more base-like encampments from what we know.
Lots and lots of "outposts" with actual Illithids on each.
And near-limitless chaff they can all but drown these companies we bought.

We will need not only to break through their defenses, but hold off their attacks from our cities.

These mercs might be good, but illithids have both better units, and many more worse units.
Gith are awesome, but they have their own illithids to attack too.

My point being, we need every drop of forces we can squeese for this, or we might just face fail on one of the fronts.

@DragonParadox, is Yss strong enough to spawn Divine Servants on-demand yet?
(With payment, ofc).

Some water sneks would be superb.

He's been powerful enough for a while, it's just that he never saw the point of outsiders, preferring the older solution of just making mortal followers like the naga. That said he is a god of trade now. If you ask for an outsider and pay for it he will make it.

'Night guys, see you tomorrow with Planar politics and probably a Mereth interlude about the golden company.
