Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
The way I see it, the mysterious lizard eggs (suspected cold ones) are just a future Amber College rep.
With all these cool and important options available, it would be utterly underwhelming for that to win.

Also, if people are actually serious about potentially becoming Belegar's intrigue advisor and/or helping him reconquer Eight Peaks, an option or two that helps with that wouldn't be amiss...

The way I see it we've already voted to do the intrigue thing which is why I'm okay dropping votes on a lot of one offs like moving our stirland stuff to here and claiming the temple for Ranald.

[X] This is Dawongr Weber's money. The funds will largely go projects within the Karaz Ankor - your tower for one, but also investing in the Undumgi or Ulrikadrin, or purchasing goods made by Dwarven artisans or sold in the markets of Barak Varr.
[X] This is tomorrow's problem. Let the money sit in the King's Armoury for now. Once you've decided what your future will be, then you can decide what to do with the money.

[X] All this time away has made you miss your friends. Visit Anton and Wilhelmina.
[X] Convince Esbern and Seija to stay long enough to hatch the supposedly Lustrian eggs and study and possibly train whatever hatches.

Hmmm... kind of bummed about the whole Karaz-a-Karak thing. Dwarves are going to Dwarve I guess. Don't yet know what I'll vote for, I'll have to look at the options again.

[ ] Scout the rest of the Eight Peaks, to find out what other horrors are waiting out there.
This suggests a future assisting Karak Eight Peaks with its reconquest, as a Spymaster focused on threats within the Karak.

@BoneyM was this an accidental copy? Or are both of these choices supposed to have the same, er, sub-description to them?

[X] Write a series of papers on the magical phenomena you witnessed. Or better yet, get your Journeymanlings to do the actual writing.
This suggests a future of investigation and study at Karak Eight Peaks, and perhaps helping Johann poke at Skaven technology.

This suggests a future catching up on your pre-existing study topics.

I want to get caught up on magic stuff -- both the old stuff we had, and the experiences we just went through.

...

... Gah. I also really really want to start scouting the rest of the 8 Peaks. But it wouldn't be super synergistic with the other 2 picked options above. If you wanted maximum focus on 8 Peaks, you'd probably pick "scout" "raid alongside Azul" "get to know royalty." Those are 3 choices that are very heavily Karak 8 Peaks-focused, and which would probably all combine neatly. ((Or something like "Get to know royalty" "make a temple (human leadership)" "spymaster within 8 peaks" -- that would be a trio focusing on politics and building up in the 8 Peaks region. Another example of a trio of actions, that is.))

... Well... Hmm. That's why I'm going to go for the magic options right now; because those options, once you complete them, can be placed back on the backlog-waiting-shelf again. (And the magic academic paper is time-sensitive!) Whereas we can start scouting 8 Peaks and getting to know the other royals, once we settle down in 8 Peaks ourselves. ... Does that make sense? It's a case of: once we get these magic actions out of the way, we can then do magic research any time we want. At our own pace. Whereas defending 8 Peaks and scouting, is like a duty and necessity we will be doing. And so, get the magic out of the way now, before we are bogged down in the necessity of providing security.

So, despite my concern over what's in the other 8 Peaks... I'm willing to set that aside for a half year or year, in order to finish actions that have been left hanging, or that are time-sensitive.

Anyway. As to why I fear for the 8 Peaks hold? Well...

Because, well... If there's one thing that I fear can ruin even this Dwarf stronghold/foothold/settlement? It's Skaven.

Right now, Belegar has established dominion over 2 peaks, but... Like. I worry that while his current kingdom can hold out against conventional attacks and won't just be buried under enemies and crumble that way... That certainty Thorgrimm had that it was going to end in tears? And which was refuted because Belegar pointed out that it's not just a foothold, it's a stronghold and a kingdom proper now? I fear that that fate can befall the 8 Peaks stronghold, if the Skaven get nervous about it and decide to throw some sort of absolute bullshit our way.

Because, unlike the Greenskins who would just besiege and attack 8 Peaks, the Skaven are capable of making some sort of plot. They can come up with some kind of doomsday weapon; or tunnel out under the whole mountain; or conjure Verminkings and send plagues.

In short: the Greenskins can "merely" attack us.

The Skaven, can panic and can scheme and can do something calamitous, even if it will also ruin the Skaven that tries it.

Which means, we're going to need to scout the other 8 Peaks, to figure out if they're getting their shit together or were made nervous by the Dwarfs settling right nearby.

I feel like, in order for Belegar's kingdom to be safe? We need to clear out all the 8 Peaks. Or at least, kick out all the Skaven. And prevent them from being able to project force into the 8 Peaks area. Then I will feel like Karak 8 Peaks will be safe from "random bullshit event" from the Skaven.

But, we can take up those duties while we're in 8 Peaks. (Yeah, like... maybe there's some opportunity cost and "There's some very juicy low-hanging fruit gains in the field of scouting intel on 8 Peaks available now, which won't be if half a year passes." It's possible. But, well...) Once we settle down. And start defending our home. I want to get the magic out of the way, so that we can work on it whenever we have time in between our duties. Whereas if we delayed the magic, then... we might be too caught up in our duties then. And also, time would have passed and some of the knowledge of the experiences would have faded. And the journeymen would be gone too.

Something to note is that despite hopes, our increased Reputation hasn't reduced the cost in dwarf favours of some relatively mundane stuff. For example:

Personally tutor Mathilde in mundane fields (combat, tactics, mathematics, history)
Same scale as the trainers, depending on the quality of the teacher.
I had now been hoping that we might now just be able to pay cash for this or get it down for free. Magical consulting I always expected to cost favours, but for just learning 'conventional' skills that weren't proprietary to a guild I was more hopeful.

I know we like to be PC here on sufficientvelocity, but so far as I know forest spiders aren't sentient and they eat people.

We don't need to open diplomatic talks with them. We can just kill them.

@BoneyM

Are the costs above final or is it possible that we'll be able to do as Al hoped and spend gold for learning?

@BoneyM for Dwarf favour, nipping the Rogue Idol in the bud still seems to be missing from the main update, and as a possible addition there's souring the goblin/skaven alliance in Karag Lhune - can't remember if the Master Moulder was proven murdered as well, but considering the circumstances he should have died.

The Idol should be in now. Souring the deal has too many unknowns for it to count for beyond assassinating that Warboss.

Did... we ever actually pay off the debt we owe to little miss anti-magic (the elector-countess of Stirland)? Because the very well kept up to date (which is much appreciated @BoneyM) says that we still owe the county, and as such her, a very large sum of money for buying into the EIC. Just saying, even if we earmark most of it for Dawongr Weber or Magister Weber or whatever, we really should think about paying off that debt before much else.

That debt is interest free so paying it off would be kind of dumb from a sensible handling of money perspective.

Here we have the Border Princes. It's a poor land with low soil fertility and is home to no less than three goblin tribes and two orc tribes. Despite that, it's still a ripe land for conquest because of its geopolitical position.

The wealthy city of Barak Varr is at its centre, it borders three other dwarf holds, of which Karaz-a-Karak itself is one of them, and it has the newly resurgent Karak Eight Peaks close by. Five dwarf holds, two of which are the wealthiest and one of which may soon join them in similar status. To the north is the Empire of Man, to the north-west Bretonnia, to the west Tilea, to the south-west Araby, and to the east the highly lucrative Ind and Cathay. If it were to join the Empire, it would be resource-poor but a massive nexus of trade, the Marienburg/Wastelands of the south. (Though the Border Princes do have plentiful forests in the north, which would let the province make a lot of money from selling lumber to Barak Varr, Karak Eight Peaks, and possibly Karaz-a-Karak.)

Resistance from the human populations would be negligible, or annoying but fruitless at worst. If a serious expedition to conquer the Border Princes were to be mounted, Barak Varr would have reason to spend its ludicrous wealth hiring mercenary armies to exterminate the greenskins, who would otherwise bounce back without a strong occupying force to keep them down. The rich south of the Empire would get a substantial buffer zone from greenskin invasion, providing us with support from those southern provinces. The dwarfs would likely provide military aid with the promise of a safer, more prosperous region and the striking out of many Grudges.

Taking the Border Princes is possible and would be very profitable for the Empire and the Karaz Ankor. Doubtless there would be challenges in conquering the region, but they're not insurmountable.
The issue with the Border Princes is the lack of natural barriers to protect them from Greenskins. The Skull River could work, I suppose, but you'd always be under threat.

Yes, that's intended.

I'll hammer out an updated price list in the not-so-distant future.

Not sure if you missed my question about enchanting/rune work as it got buried many pages back.

What would it take to get books on enchanting/runecrafting from the other colleges of magic, the intent is just to learn about how the other colleges do enchanting/rune work we wouldn't want Mathilde to actually channel the other winds obviously but I feel this would have a lot of intersection with working on the Snek juice.

Does Mathilde think asking about this with the college authorities would be risky?

Probably not going to win, but I still like the Abyss idea. "Eternally watching the Deep Dark, waiting for the skittering Skaven to rise up once again."

I reckon the dwarves would respect it, and we could spec the tower for max shadow magic and start creating MAPs of the area for the dwarves.

[X] Karag Nar temple
Your previous 'tower' was nothing of the sort, and perhaps you wish to continue that trend. If so, the site of you and Ranald triumphing over Gork and Mork would certainly be equally auspicious. It's a convenient distance from the population centers of the Karag and has a nearby side-entrance you could properly conceal and keep for your own use. (note: if you don't choose this as a tower, you can still use it in the future for a shrine or some other purpose. Nobody but you, Belegar, and Kragg know its significance, and everyone else just sees it as a former greenskin temple an inconvenient distance from the rest of the Karag.)

A fair point. I was browsing and saw that, and wanted to bring it up at least as a point of consideration. And while interest-less debt is good... its still debt. I understand that money used for that could be used to invest in future developments or whatever, but... thats going to get called in at some point, and I'd rather pay it off now when we have the money than pay it off later when we don't, perhaps because of that vow of poverty forcing us to have spent it. Not claiming this is the right decision (its way too early in the morning here for me to make a rational decision on that), but pointing it out doesn't hurt.

It's already being paid off, tho? Our money from the EIC automatically goes to paying it down, iirc.

That's good news. As it looks like we're hanging around Karak Eight Peaks for a while it seems like it would be sensible to learn about dwarven history, genealogy, political geography, and probably military theory. It's also the kind of learning that I hope Mathilde's Practical trait would play nicely with.

That's not to suggest that I wouldn't also want to learn dwarven mathematics or magical theory, or skaven/greenskins lore, but we probably want to mix it up a bit.

On that last thought, I wonder whether Mathilde's new trait would give her a particularly insight into Greenskin Lore, as she clearly has a particularly good understanding of the Waaagh field, which is a huge part of their nature.
