Or selling them to our state of choice for some sweet C-Bills and for making friends.
I'd start of slow, by sending out feelers to all parties involved
[X] Diplomacy In Action
--[X] Contact the Taurian Embassy
----[X] Present ourselves as a force of de-escalation. The Reach is a usefull buffer state, and it'll be a much more useful bufferstate if it gets supported by a local power such as instead of a superpower who's currently pulling the strings.
----[x] An intervention from our side could thus both eliminate a volatile and inhumane regime and prevent the formation of an enemy proxy state
--[X] Contact the Magistocracy Embassy
----[X] Try to figure out what their deal is
--[X] Try to make contact with the Restoration
----[X] Try to figure out what their deal is
If we do not intervene now, we'll skip along an entire year. Basically, at that point it'll be too late for us to intervene.
Yeah I wouldn't worry about no public outcry. We have the images, videos, and reports of what the Directorate did to its people and we have known about the purges that the Directorate has been doing for years now. We finally have the answer to what happened to those people. Plus with not only the Commander on the Restoration side but with the survival of the guy that trained both of them and the leader of the Royal Guard the Restoration has gotten a major boost in legitimacy and skill. Our people were angry with the oligarchs of Portland with their neglect of their people that caused issues and they didn't even do anything on the level of what the Directorate did. Our people are going to want us to do something against the Directorate. Not only because the Directorate is known for being repressive to its people and antagonistic to others, but also because the people remember that the Helgan Empire did the same thing and they wouldn't want to see something like that continue. This seems like the most viable action, it'll be seen as escalatory if we immediately jump to supporting the Restoration without a casus belli or at least some semblance of public outcry, however washing our hands off it completely seems far too much.
[X] Diplomacy In Action, Extended
Doing nothing is completely out of the question. But we can't just jump in to the fight without first establishing some form of dialogue. That way the Directorate can give us the reason to act because they will. We already have the reports and images from the Weldrey Campaign so we know what they are capable of. Plus with us being involved and investigating things the Directorate will be easier to catch in their massacre so we can keep the Taurians out of the fight. Once we have established our communication with the sides in the fight we can start supporting the Restoration with materials, information, money, and supplies to help the planets they liberated. Food exports to them will be a major need since without a steady stream of it the people will start to starve. Building materials will also be useful for the Restoration so they can recover faster. Basically most of what we did for Portland we do again for the Restoration. Maybe we send in our special forces and some boarding pods so they can capture ships instead of having to destrory them and keeping the Taurians from getting more invested in helping the Directorate. Sell the special forces as a Helgan Merc unit that wants to get some experience in this war.
Of course we need to play it to our advantage I am not saying we become a charity. But of the two sides one is being helped by the mercenary group that we have good relations with. One that doesn't have the debts that forced them to take any job they could find so they chose to support the Restoration. Also that is why we open talks first we know the Directorate is bad so we need to see what the Restoration is like. And the Republic has no idea about body doubles or anything like that so that isn't a reason not to get involved. There is one thing we need to consider, we don't know much of the Restoration, we know the game, the characters, but the Republic? and while they might have the better cause, they could end up being as awful as the directorate, honestly I and many joked Kamea might be a doppelganger, the whole thing with Hanse happened in 3025, which should be nowish, now there could have been a trial run and the aurigns do border the Crappies... mind, I am sure Max got some religious help with doppel, so that ould make her a matrioshka doll of a doppel
Anyway, my point is that, even though we might simpathise with the restoration, we do need to think about things and be ready to do what is in our advantage
