they're always so useless and never give a straight answer

plus it will probably be something like 'the great evil beneath the mountain' and you'll be like, "hmm, maybe we should take those big-ass worm tunnels to get beneath the mountain"
You say this with the confidence of someone who has met with earth spirits
which is odd seeing that we have never done so

[X] Exterminate the worms. Though there were some third realm specimens, it is something that you are sure can be handled easily.

We're going in those tunnels sooner or later

[X] Investigate the migrating earth spirits. Together you can try to tease out the source of their agitation, and save the cartographers some work.

Just tell them to send Ji Rong to deal with the worm problem. Let the poor lad have his revenge for what happened during the tournament.

you really think it's going to be as simple as just asking them and all the mysteries are revealed?

narrative demands don't allow such a boring mission
Doesn't narrative then also demands that we don't just wander around hoping for a lucky lead since that'd be pretty boring too, so that helpfully clears up your original reasoning against earth spirits, I guess.

Wouldn't be surprised if there are people better suited for dealing with worms or spirits in the main army than Ling Qi is. Yan Renshu got into the Inner Sect at the same time as Ling Qi, so he's probably participating in the exercise. Ji Rong is thunder and lightning, which in most Xianxia/old chinese mythology is highly effective against evil spirits and ghosts. Furthermore, both of the other options are more combat based, while I don't really see an army of third realms having a good time fighting against actual mountains if the earth spirits are agitated when they get there. Meanwhile, maybe talking to literal mountains will be good for future figurative mountain Zhengui.

Ling Qi hummed to herself, they would no doubt find more trouble in the days to come as they filled in the holes left by their general exploration today. However, none of them needed rest just yet, so it occurred to Ling Qi that before they were forced to begin splitting up to address smaller problems, perhaps they could solve one of these larger issues, and she could get a stronger feel for the capabilities these three had.
I think this paragraph is key to understanding the choice. Today we get to tackle a problem together. Tomorrow we might have to tackle a problem separately. Ling Qi is uniquely suited to taking down those worms alone, if she had to. All three issues could warrant team investigation but I definitely think LQ can handle the worms. She could also probably handle either of the other two but I would prefer a larger group of experience.

[x] Seek to quell and disperse the malicious spirits gathering at the Old Watch, and find what is causing the quelled spirits to rise again.

I think it's reasonable to believe we can handle this issue as a group, as it involves spirit diplomacy (quelling), spirit dispersal (combat), and investigation, and the more diverse skills required the better off we are tackling it as a team. Either LQ or the old man might be able to treat with the earth spirits, and LQ can handle the worms, so I feel this is the best choice to take on today while we still are able to work together with the other 3.
