"You were not the visitor I had expected," he said, sounding more somber than usual.

Ling Qi frowned, feeling a little awkward. "I am sorry, did you wish for me to come back later?"

"No, no do not worry your head over your Senior Brother's disputes," he said, waving a hand now empty of weaponry dismissively as he strolled closer.
Hm... I'm guessing the rank #2 person wants their spot back?

Yep, this is just how powerful our ability to turn off our empathy really is. It is a big button labelled "Other", and after we've ceased to consider someone as inside our ingroup, they cease to be human beings.
Which, to be fair, is the default setup for humans. People that are not part of your family/friends/town/country/religion/tribe/whatever aren't "really" people to you, not emotionally.
That's why in (most) stories you can have things like the hero killing his way through an army of mooks only to balk down when having to strike the finishing blow to the villain. Because only the people that you have a relation with, good or bad, are really people. The numerous nameless faceless mooks are just props, as relevant as trees in the background.

Iirc we're mastering it this turn, right ? Hopefully that'll push the story in to a stealth mission, hence giving us an occasion for free successes.
